This book is brilliant on a scholarly as well as a human level. It helped me enormously in the process of mourning my mother - and it also got me very interested in the subject of grief work. It is accessible for the layperson and well documented and researched for the professional. I can't reccomend it enough.

Takes Kubler-Ross a step further.

This is an informative book for professionals. The information is concise, clear and helpful. As a therapist running grief groups, this book taught me some new ways to work with my clients to help them through this difficult process. Thank you Nini and Marianne.

I was fortunate enough to have a seminar with Mr. Harris and I must say that this book changed my life and many others who read it. The ideas contained within it are very powerful and profound, giving anyone a new look at the things in their life. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone no matter what their age, or academic level.

This publication receives 5 stars for usefullness. If you are planning a course around the theme of the Hero's Journey (ala Joseph Campbell) or looking for curriculum support that will help your students understand archytpes in fiction, this book is for you. There are many ready-to-copy handouts, including a student workbook. Source material, rubrics, and clear lesson objectives are included. Better yet, the driving purpose behind these materials is for students to connect litertature to thier own lives. As they learn to see the patterns in stories, they see that each of thier lives is also a journey full of chanllenges and trials. Great material for a capstone course.

This is a great book. My son first read it at school and wanted a copy of his own. We read it and read it and I still don't tire of it.

Spoiler Alert! Hieronymous Betts and His Unusual Pets by Mark Robertson

Review Date: 2005-10-01
Hieronymous Betts has a large menagerie of strange mixed beasts as pets. From his slugapotamus to his whatchamacallit, we are introduced to an array of disgustingly fun pets. But Hieronymous knows of something even stranger--his brother! As a celebration of the absurd and the joy of brothers, children will enjoy rereading this book over and over to study the strange beasts and relive the surprise ending. A lighthearted romp through the imagination with an ending full of brotherly love.

Highly recommended.

A Perfect Little Book

Review Date: 1999-12-14
I loved this book! Having just finished my own American pilgrimage, and non-fiction book: HOLY PERSONAL, looking for small private places of worship, Indiana University Press, Fall 2000, I found HOME ALTARS OF MEXICO one of the best books on the subject currently available. It touched me deeply. The color photographs are wonderful, somewhat formal considering the informality of the subject matter, and the contrast is intriguing-- no SOHO artist could improve on these spiritual assemblages. The text is a series of very well-written and inspired essays. Salvo looks at the altars of one small town in Mexico, so the book is highly focused. A truly aesthetic collection that brings light to a subject that is too often triviaalized and trendy.

I love this book and need to look at it periodically to remind myself of timeless values. The villagers who opened their homes and hearts to the Salvo family and the readers of this book bring their love of God, Christ, the Virgin Mother and all the saints to life through the photos, statues, and items both religious and secular that they collect in their sacred spaces. One picture features two Coca-Cola bottles as candle-holders. One altar-shelf has a chair below it featuring the handiwork of the lady of the house: the neatly folded sheets and laundry bring the fruits of her labors to God in a very concrete fashion. Thank you, Dana Salvo, for sharing these photos, and thank you, authors, for your thoughts on them. Above all, thanks to all the people in the pictures for sharing their lives and spirit with this book's readers.

I bought this book in 1975. The people I found inside its pages became my friends. They influenced the way I thought about life and they changed the way I lived the rest of my life. Today I live on a small farm called Total Loss Farm. I still read passages from the book to keep me sane in world gone insane. Thank you to all the lovely people who created that book.

Decent Book with Lots of Stuff to Draw

This is a nice book with lots of things to draw. My daughter didn't like it that much though because the pictures are more cartoon-ish, just like you see on the cover. She prefers more "realistic" how-to-draw books. But it still is a good deal for the price.

Review Date: 1999-06-27

The best introduction; plus, there's a SECOND volume
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-05
I certainly agree with the reviewer of October 2004, though I should point out that Launey's book not only lacks an index, but also a general vocabulary. However, he includes a vocabulary in each lesson, so that's not as serious a problem as it might be.
But the main reason for writing this review is to note that Launey produced an extraordinary "tome 2 : litterature", a reader in Nahuatl of 430 pages. This reader offers a normalized Classical Nahuatl text on the left page, with vowel length and saltillo indicated, a facing page translation into very plain French, and extensive footnotes on particular elements of grammar and vocabulary. The pieces are drawn from various parts of the old Nahuatl corpus, with the lion's share being, understandably, taken from Sahagun, but also from the Cronica Meixicayotl and the Anales de Cuauhtitlan. All of these are in prose, though there is a small selection of poetry toward the end. There are also two brief texts in modern Nahuatl from the village of Santa Ana Tlacotenco, and finally a brief rundown on traditional orthography and a bibliography. Again, there is no general vocabulary, so students will have to provide themselves with that however they can.
Altogether, this 2nd volume is indispensible for those learning Classical Nahuatl on their own. Unfortunately, it appears to be very difficult to get, at least in North America. Those who have access to interlibrary loan services will want to make use of them, as well as a photocopier, I suppose.

Excellent introduction to Classical Nahuatl

If you can read French, this is a very good progressive introduction to Classical Nahuatl. It is not meant as a reference grammar, nor easy to use for such a purpose (no index!) but is admirably lucid and thorough. Michel Launey is well aware of the syntactic oddities of Nahuatl (for example its "omnipredicative" nature, on which he's written a treatise), but manages to present the facts without needless exoticism in terminology on the one hand, or misrepresentation of Nahuatl structure on the other. As a bonus, there's an interesting appendix on modern Nahuatl dialects.

Clear, easy to follow intro to LGCM theory and techniques
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-21
This is an excellent book for anyone who wishes to not only understand the theory behind latent growth curve modeling but also seeing how it is directly applied in a number of situations. For a reader like me who depends upon the literature to help understand newer statistical approaches, a book like this is a breath of fresh air. The book presents very clearly how to set up a basic LGC model and includes other topics such as dealing with missing data, interaction effects and multilevel approaches to longitudinal data analysis. The appendix contains a number of example LGCM models in the software language of EQS, LISREL and AMOS. I most highly recommend this text for beginners and more advanced modelers alike!

A great second edition of a book that is easy to use. This book has proven to be very useful to graduate students learning Latent Curve Methods on their own as well as in a supportive classroom environment. The examples are well described and the theory is sufficient to inform almost any user. My students had success using every example then replicating that success with their own datasets.

Fascinating reading
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-09-20
I'm using this textbook and study guide for an online course from UC-Berkeley, so I don't have the advantage of physically present professors or students who I can ask questions. However, they are entirely unnecessary for this book.

Gelles is nationally reknowned for his work in sociology, and he conveys his love for it in this textbook. He and his co-authors write with skill and portray their inside-and-out familiarity with the subject. They also pass on some of their love for it. Sociology is the subject I look forward to studying each morning.

The pictures and excellent examples also make this book easy and fun to read and study. It's straightforward and written so clearly that an 8th Grader would have no trouble using the book either. Each point the authors make is backed up with fascinating historical scenarios or illustrations from sociological research.

I highly recommend this book!

Excellent Textbook

Review Date: 2002-04-25
I was spoiled to have Dr. Gelles be my professor while I was using the textbook for my intro course at Penn. The textbook itself draws in many interesting sociological concepts using examples from real research and historical data. I don't see why someone who wants to learn about sociology, history, and a lot of other things wouldn't just read this book. The book is well organized and designed to culminate knowledge from previous chapters to develop the sociological imagination.
