I agree with "A reader": This book is sublime.Review Date: 2006-06-17

Selections from Friedrich's letters are a neat fit, bowing to the idea that his transcendental painting ultimately eludes scholarly discourse.
This book lands with authority, passion, and a keen sense of the vistas of silence that Friedrich communicates to admirers everywhere.
A bargain. Snap it up if you come across it...

Castro Valley BookReview Date: 2005-10-06
I have a lot of books from the "Images of America" series that Arcadia put out, and I thought the East Bay Area had been pretty well covered, but I just picked up my copy of "Castro Valley," and read it from cover to cover without putting it down!
For residents, there are plenty of familiar places and names, but there's a lot of pictures and stories that I've never even heard before. But even if you don't live in Castro Valley, it's an interesting, very informative look at suburban towns in general, and tells a lot about the East Bay area's development.
I highly reccommend it!

French Bargue Drawing CourseReview Date: 2007-09-23
Highly recommended even if you don't read French but can't afford the English edition (the volume concludes with a biography of Charles Bargue written in French) - still very useful as a reference & training guide.
Charles Bargue: The Drawing Course / Cours de DessinReview Date: 2007-07-15
Anyway, I would definitely recommend this book for non-French speakers in my situation, as there are no plans to reprint the English version any time soon - while I'm unable to read much of the text (which appears to consist mostly of biographical/historical info on Charles Bargue & the times in which he lived), the main purpose of the book - the nearly 200 gorgeous lithographs used for centuries to train art students worldwide - need no text to introduce or explain them.

Excellent resourceReview Date: 2008-05-25
This book has been a staple part of my library for nearly 20 years, and I have recommended it to many of my own students as they become interested in chi kung.

EXCELLENT guide to beginning chi kungReview Date: 2001-01-11
Also included in the book are chapters on Chi Kung and Health- which includes acupuncture and massage, and a chapter on martial applications which covers cavity presses and briefly iron shirt chi kung.
This is a GREAT book on chi kung, especially for those unfamiliar with it, it may not be helpful for the expert- although it has other material which might be.

An indepth, benchmark study.Review Date: 2000-09-07
Transparent and Balanced ResearchReview Date: 2001-04-28
This is by any standard a major piece of work and we are fortunate that the RAND Institute for Civil Justice has the resources to publish it so fully. The substantial appendices contain much of the detail about methodologies, data collection and calculations that usually have to be omitted from law review articles. Readers can judge for themselves the thoroughness of the researchers and the accuracy of calculations supporting many of their assertions and assumptions.
At heart of this study is the question whether the policing of the public interst and public safety ought to be a function of the state or of "private attorneys general". The study is largely non-judgmental - although you may conclude that this research suggests an answer. There is plenty of ammunition for both points of view to be found in this book.
It is a treasury of fascinating facts about this kind of litigation. It includes the revelation that some attorneys were remunerated at the rate of $2,000 per hour for their efforts - and to think that we thought only mergers and acquisitions lawyers could aspire to that kind of reward!
The only criticism I have to make is that the executive summary that RAND publishes separately is not contained in the book. That is a useful document and its inclusion here would not have added substantially to publication costs but would have enhanced the final product.

The Best French DictionaryReview Date: 2000-09-05
On the contrary, this dictionary was the only one my french tutors would accept and this dictionary not only gave examples of when to use the word but it was printed very nicely and they had almost every word I looked up. (I was looking up words like Pre-cambrian Period, so I was quite happy it had most of the words I looked up.)

Above all, this is the most thorough and best-reproduced representation of this artist's work I have seen to date, containing not only every single painting I have seen from other studies of the artist, but also several I encountered here for the first time. I doubt this will be equalled (let alone surpassed) for many years to come.
