THREE RIVERS: THE YUKON'S GREAT BOREAL WILDERNESS explores a region of vast wilderness previously unknown to the outside world, but is a major environmental hotspot of modern times as it represents one of the last, key pieces of the boreal region. With the Mackenzie Valley pipeline proposal looming to threaten it, the Three Rivers region is in the news and deserving of this coffee-table survey, which packs in color photos and art and writing by major authors to remind of the region's importance.

After visiting the yukon(from Australia)and travelling by road I was interested in learning about more inaccessable areas of the Yukon. The book is first and foremost a photographic journey in the great boreal wilderness area by way of the Snake, Bonnet Plume and Wind rivers. The photographs are spectacular but are accompanied by well written text and great descriptive writing by a number of different writers who made the trip. It also is informative where relevent of the history of the area and has just the right balance. The book is a focus on the need to conserve the area, and it successfully does this by "taking you there" and helping you see and feel it for yourself. It does not focus on an anti development theme as such but achieves the environmental focus in a positive and stunning manner. The book is a delight to look at and read and is well set out and captioned. The gwich'in inhabitants of the area and their lives are well integrated into the story and adds to make this a book worth having and revisiting. I can appreciate the care that went into preparing this book so that it is immediately visually stunning but then has wonderful text to read and enjoy and have some appeal to everyone.

AN EXCELLENT INTRODUCTION TO OCEANOGRAPHY

.

For any child who is developing an interest in the marine life sciences this is the book for them.

"Under the Sea" is well structured and logically laid out. It starts with the physical environment of the oceans. The main part of the book is a systematic coverage of the various marine environments that are classified according to their depth and temperature. . The characteristic biotas that occupy each ecological niche are well described.

Some readers may find this approach formulaic but a rigorous scientific methodology is necessary if the information it contains is to be comprehensible and of real value.

The illustrations accompanying the text are bright, accurate but definitely not garish. The pictures and their captions provide good support to the text.

This book is an ideal companion to another book by the "Nature Company Discoveries" title "Mammals" which is edited by George McKay

This book provides an ideal launching pad for those children who are keen to learn about the natural world. This book is definitely out of the ordinary.

.

Jam packed with goodies!

This is one of the greatest computer books I've ever owned.

If you are a beginner, you can open this book, and find all kinds of great tools and techniques you never knew about before. Everything is described briefly, in just a page or two, so you can immediately get something out of it. If you are more advanced, you will find yourself flipping through pages, saying, "Yes, I knew that. Yes, I knew that. Oh, I didn't know that!"

This book is jam packed with tips, techniques and tutorials. If you're a serious UNIX user or shell programmer, this is an extremely handy book to have around. It's only negative might be that there is just so much in here, it is sometimes overwhelming. On the up side, there is an excellent index at the back.

An easy to follow, brick sized book

This book is the best investment I have made and it applies to a lot of things you'd want to do, but never have thought about. 'Hyperlinked' contents point to other parts of the book if you need to know more is really a cool concept. It my Linux companion. I also used it to help those HP admins on some issues.

The ultimate Unix book.

If you're an experienced Unix administrator or advanced Unix user, this is the book to have. The book goes one step beyond the usual books and goes into detail about getting things done in Unix.

In particular there is a lot of info here on shell scripting showing the differences between the Korn, Bourne and C shells.

What is good about this book is that it' not just a refernce but shows you the steps in getting really difficult things done.

I speak from my own experience with the 3rd edition of Accounting Principles: this text comes from masters of teaching. Rather than begin with definitions, the authors first submerse you into the course of thought by describing a business problem, then deploy accounting concepts designed to solve it. They grudge no efforts making sure that you understand them correctly-and you do, because the partition between the teacher and the student is removed. Highly recommended.

This is bottomline an excellent book with editors and contributors that are prominent in their fields. The subjects covered were relevant in my work and there were excellent references for further study. I have passed my examinations and impressed my senior specialist peers after reading and understanding concepts vividly elucidated in this tome.Time and again this book has been the basis for my lectures to paramedics and medical student. The text is too small though. If you want a serious and indepth reference on acute pain, this is it.

A wonderful textbok for all who love pain

No matter what else is going on with the UFO Phenomenon, a large part of it has to be the reduction of the Earth's population. And AIDS is very effective at doing just that, even though the process may take generations. I feel that this book is on the right track, suggesting a multi-pronged introduction of AIDS into different environments, at the same time, and with different characteristics. I do not think that nature could have done this on its own.

The material presented is Earth shaking in nature.

Numerous books have been written pertaining to the alien abduction phenomenon, but none to date have even touched on the material contained in this work. This history making text will prove to be a document of such significant scientific merit that it will become required reading for anyone researching the alien abduction field. The material presented is earth shaking in nature. In some circles the subject of alien abduction is still only talked about in whispers. In certain geographical areas abductions take on a more sinister overtone. We don't hear much locally about human mutilations but in other countries they are commonplace. Such is also true with the AIDS epidemic. These are not subjects that are discussed among the populace in an open manner. Only time and research will enlighten the human species. This book, The AIDS-ET Connection, is ONLY the beginning.

A Fine Catalog of the Wyeth Family in America Reappears
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-25
In 1987 there was a traveling exhibition, AN AMERICAN VISION: THREE GENERATIONS OF WYETH ART, that was accompanied by a beautiful hardcover book by the same name. Fortunate for art lovers that catalog, having passed through a paperback phase, is once again appearing on the shelves of book stores and museums. It is a treasure worth seeking. Presented with a fine overview by James H. Duff the book follows the lives and influences and works by the three Wyeths: N.C. Wyeth, 1882 - 1945, is introduced by his son Andrew; Andrew Wyeth (born 1917) is introduced by Thomas Hoving; James Wyeth (born 1946) is introduced by Lincoln Kirsten who not only brings the reader up to date with Wyeth the Younger, but also provides insights to the durability of the Wyeth tradition and influence on American art.

Some may have once dismissed the three Wyeths as minor artists and major illustrators, but today's critics share a growing appreciation for their output, both individually and as a family of unique thought. NC Wyeth's works were more devoted to historic adventure paintings and his works were often used in books as illustrations for tales of adventure. Andrew Wyeth captured the mood of an America losing contact with the simplicity of her roots and his simple, unfettered landscapes and portraits continue to be hallmarks of a simpler time, a period when the poetry of Robert Frost and William Carlos Williams and the music of Aaron Copeland defined the quiet frontier vision too often forgotten in the smoke of industry and the clangor of technology. James (or Jamie) Wyeth's approach to nature and her animals and to the rugged individualism of the people who populate New England continue to celebrate the customs and concepts of a neglected America continue to grow: many feel his current work is his strongest.

The book is filled with full color plates of the paintings and drawings of all three of the Wyeth clan and moving through the pages is not unlike strolling the museums where this exhibition traveled throughout the USA and in Russia, England and Japan. It is a book of revelations about the three artists and an homage to a family talent that persists. Very highly recommended: look for it now! Grady Harp, December 07

This is a fascinating book - about all three artists and also a study of artistic ability and creativity running through the family. I bought it years after enjoying the exhibition and have also given it to other art lovers. What the artists have to say about each other is interesting and the reproductions are beautiful. Don't miss this - it will only enhance your appreciation every time you encounter a Wyeth!

I was lucky enough to have Professor Solomon for Greek Mythology and "Greek Myth II" (it had a much longer name in the course catalogue, but this is what Dr. Solomon called the course)in the early 1980's. Dr. Solomon was one of the most well-liked professors at the University of Minnesota both for his sense of humor and his ability to tell stories that bring the Ancients back to life. His classes were always full. I believe he is now at Illinois, via Arizona. He was a great guy, terrific storyteller, compassionate professor, and I would not hesitate to recommend any book by him.

Witty & Rewarding

This book is a feast of witty stories culled from mostly first century sources about the dining customs of the Caesars and those they ruled, followed by a hundred or so pages of tasty recipes - including several in the original Latin - all dug out of the prose and poetry of the time and many attributed to persons who would be known to any first year Latin scholar. It is a thoroughly enjoyable read, and the recipes are easy, authentic, and delicious. I borrowed this book from the library at St. Anselm's Abbey, and all 10 of the dishes I prepared for my daughter's 8th grade Latin class using it were devoured voraciously.

I was impressed by the level of scholarship involved in finding and testing all the recipies, and I appreciated the detailed source list, which gives recipe by recipe citations. The practical hints for modern readers and encouragement to use authentic ingredients rather that substitute were also great. Best of all were the cultural and historical stories used to introduce many of the recipes. One tidbit: did you know that Ancient Romans thought lettuce was indigestible, and so they pounded their romaine to a pulp before making their salads?

I just have to have a copy of this cookbook for my home library, and I highly recommend it for any student of Ancient Rome or as a present for a beloved Latin teacher. Lastly, the author is right. The Stuffed Dates with Honey are addictive!

Anglo-Saxon England In Icelandic Medieval Texts is the first scholarly work to give an overview of what Icelandic medieval texts say about Anglo-Saxon England with regard to its language, culture, history, and geography. Among the texts that Professor Magnus Fjalldal (Department of English, Haskoli Islands, University of Iceland) scrutinizes are family sagas, shorter paettir, histories of Norwegian and Danish kings, and the Icelandic lives of Anglo-Saxon saints. In response to a hostile Norwegian court and kings, Icelandic authors from the early thirteenth century imagined a largely fictitious version of England, resembling a theater stage more than a nation, in which Scandinavian saga heroes swept in to solve the problems of kindly and generous yet bumbling kings. A heavily researched, invaluable contribution to scholars of medieval literature, Norse culture, and Anglo-Saxon England, with careful scrutinies of texts rarely studied outside of Iceland or in the English language, recommended for college library and graduate studies shelves.

This book looks awesome. I bought it to use as part of an ocean studies year with my second grader. Full of great information as well as great experiments that you can easily do at home. All the supplies are things you have or are easily attainable. The experiments are not to complicated but fun enough to hold interest. Very fun! We also ordered the Sea puzzles companion book also by Cindy.
