Brilliant! A Must read book!Review Date: 2002-04-29
Gordon Epperson, author, professor emeritus of music at the University of Arizona and famed concert cellist has given us an insightful look at this man in his book, The Mind of Edmund Gurney. More than a biography, much more, The Mind of Edmund Gurney offers the reader an in-depth view of a man who was way ahead of his time. He was a friend to George Eliot, Samuel Butler, Henry Sedgwick, Leslie Stephen and William James, with whom Mr. Gurney had an extensive correspondence. It was through these letters that Professor Epperson was able to fashion a detailed and scholarly look at this complex and charismatic individual.
The Mind of Edmund Gurney presents a vivid picture of a dynamic person of extraordinary accomplishment. Even though he died at the early age of 41, he was able to study and write about hypnosis, psychic research, musical criticism---even poetry, in addition to everything else. He collaborated with F. W. H. Myers, author of Human Personality and Its Survival of Bodily Death, in the first significant studies of hypnosis to appear in England, providing convincing evidence of telepathy. And all of this in a rather providential time in history. Professor Epperson writes, "His personality was powerful, his character complex. He had the capacity to enter into the thoughts and feelings of others, and he made a strong impression...on whomever he had to do with."
The only way we have to meet Edmund Gurney is vicariously, through a well documented, thoughtful and provocative book entitled, The Mind of Edmund Gurney. Gordon Epperson has illuminated a life that might otherwise have been lost to history!

Fascinating Look at the First US Remote Viewing ExperimentsReview Date: 2001-11-29
Authors Russell Targ and Harold Puthoff bring their experience as physicists at the world-famous Stanford Research Institute (SRI) to bear on the subject of paraphysical phenomena, and help ensure that scientific methods are followed throughout their experiments. Targ and Puthoff are pioneers in the field of remote viewing, and many of the experiments described in MIND-REACH are classics which are frequently referred to today.
Many of the subjects who participated in the experiments described in MIND-REACH are well-known figures today: Ingo Swann, Patrick Price, Uri Geller, and "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" author Richard Bach. Margaret Mead wrote the introduction for this outstanding book, and Richard Bach wrote the forward.
It's well worth the effort to find a copy of this classic book, if you are interested in reviewing some of the original remote viewing experimental results.

Quite IntriguingReview Date: 2005-08-29
"Multiple Man" is essentially about the theory that we all have "divided conciousness", or various personalities within us. The idea being that various personas show themselves in response to different situations - this is shown as being "normal".
But there is also another side to the multiplicity of man that is decidedly "abnormal" - such as with those who suffer from "multiple personality disorder", and those who feel as if they're being influenced from within by an outside source. In these situations, where a person is being negatively influenced by "other personalities", the author looks at the situation through both scientific/psychological & "occult" theories.
1 of the "occult" theories is that of possession - that people can become possessed by the dead, living family members & thought-forms (of both a good & bad nature). Mr. Crabtree included several examples where this appears to be the case, and shows that when the therapist treats each "personality" or "entity" as though it's real - regardless of whether they &/or the client actually believe them to be real - much can be accomplished by way of ridding the client of whatever negativity has been occuring. The author also describes in detail how he has learned to deal with these situations, and what other therapists can expect if they choose to adopt his methods.
Overall, I found the concepts discussed to be quite intriguing, and my interest was maintained throughout the reading. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in psychology &/or spirituality. An open mind is a must!

The Best Ever WrittenReview Date: 2001-01-07
The book starts with a remarkably thorough insight into the origins of Astrology and its subsequent development to the present day, charting the major breakthoughs that helped the discipline to establish itself as the premier intellectual pursuit of ancient and more recent times.
Although practitioners do not need any justification of Astrology, the authors do go into considerable detail on psychology which helps the reader to understand the concepts and techniques of interpreting mundane charts in a much more objective manner than would otherwise be the case.
If this were all that the book explains that would be enough for it to be valuable, however, the authors then proceed not only to demonstrate chart-reading techniques, but also to explain other extremely valuable charting techniques not requiring horoscopes! All the while cross-referencing with examples and published works.
Where this book excels is that the authors present astrology in a practical, no nonsense logical way and are honest enough to admit that they do get things wrong from time to time.
For sheer volume of extremely valuable information this book has it all - An Essential text for any serious Astrologer
