Other Pursuits of Victor HugoReview Date: 2008-09-16
You may know Victor Hugo from school, as his poetry and literary works are very well known and considered classics. Amongst his most recognizable are "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (1831) and "Les Miserables" (1862).
The book contains background to the period of history in France that Hugo lived in. The author John Chambers provides some very good material to give you the basis from which the three years Hugo spent working with the spirit world meaning. Hugo was in exile from France (during the reign of Napoleon III) on the Isle of Jersey from 1852. In 1953 he was introduced to a phenomenon that was sweeping France at that time - turning tables or tapping tables. A very long and drawn out process, the turning table taps out letter of the alphabet which turns into words to answer questions asked of spirits from the other side. This book is mainly about those three years that Hugo spent recording his conversations with some of the most prominent dead people of the centuries, as well as some mysterious souls who shared conversation with him. Hugo was very careful to record all the séances he performed, which because of the method used, could take hours.
Hugo's life is also inspected here. Chambers discusses his political views, his personal opinions and the consequences of some of his actions. Hugo was all about politics and it is very much reflected in his personal works as well as his discussions with the spirit world. The life of Hugo is not without its tragedies, and the book also looks at all of Hugo's influences, as well as his ego, his sense of humor and his family, who were instrumental in his work.
This is a very well presented biography, focusing on the three years that Hugo spent conversing with the spirit world. There are transcripts included that make this book extremely interesting, and whatever conclusions you draw from the material presented, I assure you that you will be entertained, amused and will find yourself pondering the conversations included in this book. It is a fascinating volume of work, and one which, if you are interested in either the life of Victor Hugo or in the various forms of Spirit Contact that are documented, you will find this an important addition to your library. boudica

we are here to know ourselvesReview Date: 2007-12-17
What I have understood is that we live in a Universe with seven levels of consciousness. At the beginning we live in the first three lower levels. In these levels we identify with the body, experiencing emotions of survival, pain, suffering, victimization. We are chemical beings experiencing this behavior life after life.
When we conquer our emotions with the help of our soul,we gain wisdom and our consciousness is working now from the soul, we are the soul. Now we move to higher levels of consciousness.
The reality is subjective and it is the firing of holographic images onto the frontal lobe of the brain, and according to quantum physics, we as observers, beings in the frontal lobe, are the ones that create reality.
We grow up in consciousness living our truth in unconditional love(giving without conditions) and finally , attitude is everything, we are what we think and the body follows the mind, with greater thoughts we create greater realities, moving to the subconscious part of the brain(lower cerebellum), which houses the mind of God.
In conclusion, this book has helped me get a much better understanding in my pursuit of knowledge about who we really are.I recommend it to anybody who is in the spiritual path as more and more people are everyday.

Titanic book rises againReview Date: 1998-07-15
I am a fan of Gardner's work, especially his 1952 Fads & Fallacies in the Name of Science which helped jump start the skeptical movement. Gardner's wit is always refreshing and the curious reader is never disappointed.
So, it was a great pleasure to see this book being offered again after its initial publication in the mid-80s, not long after the remains of Titanic were found by Dr. Robert Ballard....
I would recommend this book in two ways: to read a good critique on precognition on this specific case, and as a selection of century-old literature that cannot be found in many places.

For those of you who don't know much about charts but are intrigued enough to keep reading, intercepted signs do a lot! Most astrological signs in a natal chart contain at least one house, sometimes they have two. This means that the energy of that sign colors that house along with any planet that is placed on it. For instance if Gemini contains the beginning (cusp) of the third house (representing communication and siblings) the person's actions in this area will be colored by Gemini characteristics.
When a very wide house (usually two since it has a counterpart opposite it on the chart) contains a whole sign with neither its beginning or end touching it, we have an interception. That means that the energies of that sign don't have a house to act out of. No area of life is directly represented by the sign. You then have to look to its ruler and use the house that contains it to express this energy. In short, your environment does not support direct expression of the trait or the needs of any planet placed inside of sign.
The other part of this book dealing with retrograde planets is equally valuable. I know of only two readily available book on that subject. This is a very good addition to the library of any budding astrologer!

A Must Read for Anyone Who's Interested in the ParanormalReview Date: 2002-05-10
Garrett knew at a young age that she was different. In her preface she writes, "I have a gift, a capacity--a delusion, if you will--which is called 'psychic.'...living with and utilizing this psychic capacity long ago inured me to a variety of epithets...In short, I have been called many things: from a charlatan to a miracle woman. I am, at least, neither of these. In this book I hope to tell the reader what I am. It is an answer to literally hundreds of requests for information concerning supernormal perception and how it functions."
She begins with her Irish childhood, where she was "exhausted in a world that did not understand or believe" her and continues on through her life to tell of her marriage, her businesses (she was a smart, entrepreneurial woman in a time when that wasn't very common), her divorce, and her move to New York. Garrett was one of the first people to objectively study parapsychology and in her lifetime she made huge contributions to psychic research. She clears up "psychic research" by saying that it's not "spiritualism" or "religion," but rather, it's the "scientific study of the human personality beyond the threshold of what man calls his conscious mind." Her book covers her experience with and knowledge of ESP, clairvoyance, psychometry, telepathy and precognition, and she emphasizes the need for more objective study and research, with an eventual unification of science and religion - a necessary development if we want to truly understand and express psychic powers.
Adventures in the Supernormal is an intriguing look into one of America's primary and highly regarded psychics, and I recommend it to anyone who has an interest in paranormal phenomena.

A fascinating anthologyReview Date: 2000-03-05
Surprised? I certainly was. Although I had previously run across scattered references to reincarnation among Indians (such as few short paragraphs in John Lame Deer's autobiography, "Lame Deer, Seeker of Visions"), I had no idea the belief in it was so widespread. Like so much else about native cultures, it appears we have been viewing this aspect through the eyes of "first contact" Europeans who, because their own belief system(s) did not allow for reincarnation, failed to recognize it in the Indian cultures they encountered.
Now for the first time, we can read a fine collection of studies that clearly document these beliefs in fascinating detail. The material is rich in anecdotes about dreams, visions, legends, Creation myths, and the lives of heros, healers, and shamans. The book includes older source material previous gathered -- and now being re-revaluated -- as well as modern cases where native individuals remember previous lives.
However, New agers or neo-shamans who want an inspiring "spirituality" read will probably be disappointed. And native Indians themselves might be put off by yet another round of Anglo anthropologists studying them. The approach here is quite scholarly, and the style is post-graduate level research paper -- think "early Ian Stevenson" (who did, in fact, write one of the articles in the book, about his research among the Tlinget tribes.) But for those who are willing to step into an anthropological mindset for a while, this book will be a real eye-opener, as well as a valuable source book. Highly recommended to any serious student of reincarnation teachings, as well as anyone interested in shamanism, comparative religion, etc.
