It is a fun book that can used for fun intellectual discussion whether at parties or just hanging out.

Can we access other realities through imagination?Review Date: 2002-07-20
The Whitney's work validates the imagination as a tool for accessing material buried in the individual and collective unconscious. She goes into the deeper psychic layers, the substrata of her consciousness, draw out and paints these images.
The book raises the question of whether humans can access other realities and other dimensions. Can imagination coupled with will bring us into contact with other intelligences in the universe? Whether you agree or not, the concept is intriguing and likely to inspire others to plumb their psychic depths.
This book deepened my trust in the power of imagination. The poet William Blake referred to imagination as another sensory organ. Read this book, and you'll never scoff at imagination as a trifling capacity. It can be a portal into wonderful and mysterious realms.

Insightful theory with practical applicationsReview Date: 2008-10-25
Sensible explanation of mind powerReview Date: 2004-08-11
He starts out with the law of vibration by first demolishing the tenets of materialism and then by comparing mental power to scientific theories of vibration with analogy to sight and sound. He claims that there exists a scientific explanation behind the beliefs of mental science, beliefs that belong in the field of physical science more than in metaphysics. Atkinson quotes some of the scientists of his own time in support of what was then known about vibrationary rates.
He explains the different types of thought waves and the atmospheres that seem to inhabit places. The two main factors in the manifestation of mental influence are concentration and mental imaging, both of which the author explores in detail. He also discusses the two general forms of the use of mental influence that he calls "fascination" and "hypnotism." Influencing at a distance, like distance healing, is also covered.
A particularly interesting chapter is the one on mass influencing, where certain ideas and beliefs can spread far and wide amongst large sections of a population. Atkinson also points out how advertising and sales techniques draw upon this ancient knowledge of thought power. He then shows how vitally important it is for the individual to be resistant or at least aware of the various currents of ideas prevalent at any given time.
He discusses white and black magic and concludes the book with a chapter on psychic protection. He urges the reader to look up to the higher self for aid and strength in order to avoid being affected by the waves of feeling or emotion sweeping over the public mind, which have a tendency to stampede people into adopting certain ideas. By affirming the flame of the spirit of the great I Am within, the individual can protect her or himself and remain firmly rooted in a healthy state of independence.
Atkinson `s insight is timeless. Considering that this book was published in 1908 with the tragic 20th century still to come, many of his ideas were ahead of their time and strangely prescient. The science of quantum physics has only added to the legitimacy of his wise words insofar as it confirms that everything is energy.
As mentioned before, Atkinson takes a very practical approach to explaining the mechanics of thought power and in this way appears to lean to the occult side of esoteric science more than the mystical. I do not mean this in a negative way, as his observations and conclusions are similar to those of the other early teachers of New Thought. He is certainly an advocate of what William James called The Religion of Healthy Mindedness.
Atkinson's contribution in this book is particularly valuable in explaining how fashions, trends and certain good or evil thought patterns can spread around the world, how susceptible the individual is, and what one can do to stay immune. I highly recommend this thought provoking book.

Psychic archaeology stranger than fictionReview Date: 2006-02-03
Review by Saul Paul Sirag
The subtitle of this book is "Psychic Archeology and the Quest for Man's Beginnings." It is good news that this book, originally published in 1978, has been republished by Hampton Roads in 2005. It describes in detail six episodes of the use of psychic information to answer the archaeologist's most pressing questions: where to dig, what one is likely to find, and even what it means. The accounts range from Glastonbury Abbey in England to Indian village sites in Canada, as well as Scotland, France, Poland, Egypt, and Mexico. Both the archaeologists and the psychics are presented as real characters-quite colorful characters-in stories that are stranger than fiction. The last three chapters constitute an essay on the philosophical and scientific implications of this breakthrough work. Two appendices provide practical advice for the use of psychics as team members in archaeology. This well illustrated book is a delight to read - and ponder!

An Extraordinary BookReview Date: 2008-10-07
I would easily categorize this volume as a textbook, one that should be carefully studied and kept close for personal reference, so rich is the material presented by the author. And in this age of rapidly shifting and expanding awareness regarding all forms of life, we need all the help we can get. But don't be fooled by the term textbook, because once you start reading, you will find it virtually impossible to put it down. Skillfully written, words and sentences, ideas and concepts flow beautifully one to the other.
For much of the book her dog, Barney, is her companion, guide, and teacher, initially while alive in his physical body, but then after his death, in his spirit consciousness. Barney leads Dawn - and us, their readers, into realms that may seem improbable on first glance. Eventually, however, as one reads on, we realize all the possibilities and probabilities Barney and other beings (in a variety of form and consciousness) offer for consideration, and personal practices well worth adopting.
Dawn Baumann Brunke has been well-known and respected in her field of healing, metaphysics and animal communication for many years. Her work with animals and spirituality is a gift to all, and in my opinion, there is no one finer to turn to for the guidance and assistance we all yearn for, consciously or subconsciously, as the world around us and within us changes and evolves. Shapeshifting with Our Animal Companions is a grand book, well-crafted by the publisher, with comfortable print and generous-sized pages. I could not recommend it more highly. Gaining Spiritual Benefits of Shared Animal ConsciousnessReview Date: 2008-10-09
The idea that our animal companions in everyday life can also be spirit guides is at the heart and soul of this book, as Brunke shares insights she has obtained from her pet dog Barney that assist her in learning to blend consciousness with others. Brunke's journaling of a variety of plant and animal communications that ensue bring us along on her journey, which ends up illustrating how we are all interconnected -- how we are all One.
The plants and animals who communicate with Brunke share wise messages which sound much like the perennial teachings from long-established spiritual faiths and traditions, which is what gives this Brunke's third book on animal communication a much more spiritual tone than its predecessors. As Brunke's dog, Barney, transitions from life to death, a deep sense of eternal connectedness comes through the messages that Brunke continues to receive from Barney, even after his passing. Many of Barney's messages to Brunke remind us of simple truths which we so often tend to forget, and can greatly benefit from taking time to remember... such as everything you need is right here, right now.
I highly recommend SHAPESHIFTING as a book that can help you transcend boundaries between yourself and others... even those who cannot speak, and those who have passed on. This is one of those rare books that leaves readers feeling a "reader's high" long after the last pages are read and the book is placed back on the shelf, as it continues to work its special magic in our hearts.

A Thriller with great Horror Movie potentialReview Date: 2008-05-29
The book is about Marie Laveau, a Voodoo "queen" who devastates the New Orleans community every twenty-five years, committing a series of sensational murders.
It is an intriguing combination of fantasy and violence set against the backdrop of the history and consequences of the slave trade in New Orleans. The author has written a gruesome thriller with moral implications, both a reminder of the inhuman practice of slavery and the cruelty inflicted on an innocent people, and that the results are still with us. Must we answer for the sins of our forefathers? Is compensation due to the descendants of those who were so abused? Can anything wipe out the consequences? Can the past ever be forgiven? Has it been forgiven? Will it ever be forgiven? One need only glance at what hurricane Katrina did to New Orleans and its largely black population to be forcibly reminded that problems connected with race still exist in America
These controversial issues, which may offend many, were not what made me read the book avidly from cover to cover. Whatever is in the mind of the author, an American judge, he has produced an absorbing and exciting story with a lurid historical background. It is not a religious sermon.
In the first pages I was sceptical about the absurd concept of magic, invisible monsters and the living dead, but soon became involved in the STORY, that Marie Laveau, whose tomb may still be visited in New Orleans, is still alive and taking revenge on the descendants of anyone who had taken part in the American slave trade. Voodoo, in a horrible and disgusting fashion, is real.
Once you have got into the book you will find that the author has managed a strong degree of verisimilitude and you find yourself living in the pages of the narrative with real people, in spite of the impossibility of what is being portrayed.
This is an absorbing, fascinating suspense story which will at times disgust, but which will ultimately compel the reader to follow it to the final nail-biting conclusion.
Light relief is supplied by policeman Marvin's dog, Yorick, and his fishing, a real Man's dog.
Although not for the oversensitive, this is a thriller with a difference which is definitely worth reading and which could make a successful horror movie with plenty of scope for special effects.
