Great detailed accounts of many cases.

This remarkable book is divided in seven main parts. Each one is devoted to a certain group of phenomena classified by the mediums involved or a specific part of the world where the events take place. They are as follows:

Mirabelli!! (after Carmine Mirabelli, a Brazilian medium)
Mediumship in Italy (several cases)
Indridi Indridason (an Icelandic medium)
Matylda (a Polish medium)
Teofil Modrzejewski (another Polish medium)
Physical Mediumship in Russia (several cases)
Psychic Phenomena in China (several cases)

Each of the parts above is subdivided in several chapters detailing the lives and powers of the mediums, experiments, special occasions, seances and testimonies of the witnesses involved.

In a nutshell, this book gives you a good image of many phenomena like levitation, materialization, voices, automatic writing and etc. It also gives an interesting portrait of the mediums and witnesses involved.

The only thing that left me a little disappointed was the lack of visual proof that would be nice along with such authoritative information: there's a group of photographs related to one chapter and that is all. Also, the book does not investigate the causes of the phenomena narrated and offers little contemporary comment on those cases. Basically, it only narrates the events, telling what happened and what the witnesses involved wrote about them.

Also, most of the cases narrated here happened over 100 years ago - what made me wonder about today's cases... where are they?

Still this book is a great introduction to the subject and those who read it will find it extremely interesting and compelling. I cannot imagine a better book to read for the kids, at night, on the woods, around the fire. Get it?

Just avoid reading it alone, in the house, in the night...

The book is super, of course.

Well, Imich had the sad fortune to be born before there were fMRI or 256 channel EEG machinery, that can determine the xyz coordinates in the brain, (at time T), as an event happens.
Thus, his psychics were only looked at from the outside, since one could not get any closer to the phenomena.
Good as the psychics were, not one of them even thought of teaching their skill. So, when they died, their speciality disappeared.
And, they were very very good.
Appearances, disappearances and materializations: first rate.
One can speculate about the physics (external to the medium), but the raw data supplied is outstanding.
So, while there might be an other spatial or temporal physical dimension(s) that mediate some of this phenomena, looking to the inside [brain scans] is only now available as a technology, for "psychic research".

This has to be one of the most fascinating books I've ever read. The "incredible tales" are vivid descriptions of the paranormal phenomena produced by famous mediums of the Victorian era. Each chapter is devoted to a different medium and gives documented accounts of poltergeist, levitations, phantoms, and more. There is the Italian medium, Mirabelli, who materializes objects, transports live flowers and large pieces of furniture, and dematerializes anything - including himself! Other mediums produce full materializations of people who walk, talk, and when touched, have a pulse! Who are these phantoms and what is their connection to the medium? Why does shining a light in the eyes of the phantom cause restless movements in the medium? Macabre, and yet the authors manage to keep the tone serious and compelling. Indeed, as I read I had the eerie feeling of being one of the sitters. In the last section on psychic experiments in China we meet children with x-ray vision and others who can read through their ears. The editor, Alexander Imich, describes his own experiences with the Polish medium Matylda and there are photographs of actual seance phenomena. Read and be mesmerized!

This book is written with an academic, professional and reasonably impartial tone. The book doesn't try to convince you that psychic phenomenon are genuine. If there is an underlying message from the author of this book, it is that many parapsychologists are HONEST scientists, they take their work very seriously, and that parapsychology is not always synonymous with pseudoscience.

A perfect guide

The author is totally unbiased.
He explains the parapsychology cosmos from various angles including science, religion, quantum physics and the occult.
I found this book to be INDISPENSABLE.
All those who are interested in parapsychology SHOULD buy this book.
It is almost perfect.
One of the very best books published in the last ten years.

This is the most thorough and definitive Inroduction to Parapsychology I have seen. It is also the most objective work of its type which I have read besides Varieties of Anomalous Experience: Examining the Scientific Evidence.

I recommend it highly and suspect that the true and observant Skeptic would as well. Yet the crafty and perjurious few that dwell amoungst the dens of "Skeptics" and "Conjurers" alike would not. Very fulfilling read!

Finally a manual that fills in all the blanks. Catherine clearly explains things as they are, not from the midst of it, but from the point of completion. The tools she offers in this manual make it easy to get to know your way around yourself, and what to do with what you find. Catherine teaches simple, yet scientific, methods that bring spirit into everyday reality.

This book has been like a 'bible' for me. When I first read Manual for the Mind it was like hitting a spring of water inside. A sudden break-out from the dryness of my normal reactions as I began to really express from within, rather than just responding as I always did to what I saw outside. From a deep, private discovery, Catherine's teachings become a part of your everyday living. An absolute necessity for anyone on the path to find out who they truely are!

Usually manuals can be known as being thick, incomprehensible books that clutter up the bookshelf, this does not apply to Catherine Wilkins book: 'Manual for the Mind - 5 Keys to Psychic Ability'

Catherine Wilkins book is written in a way that any reader will be able to understand, follow easily and refer to - time and time again.

The book content appears well researched, up to date, and written in a style that the reader will find helpful as they read through this book.

There is practical information in the first part of the book, and exerises to practise, found in the latter part of the book.

I think any reader will find 'Manual for the Mind - 5 Keys to Psychic Ability', fascinating reading and a great resource to utilise over and over again.

I was delighted to read Catherine Wilkins book'Manual for the Mind - 5 Keys to Psychic Ability', to be able to make good sense of the material and apply myself to some of the exercises (most of which I haven't come across before), in a tangible and practical way. Good exercise instructions written throughout this book, that were easy to follow.

The front cover and book layout of 'Manual for the Mind - 5 Keys to Psychic Ability'is attractive and well presented.

When I received my copy, I could not put it down. I refer to this treasure now, on a regular basis.

I first encountered this book about ten years ago, when I was just beginning to explore women's spirituality. At that time, I was just starting to be able to understand the power of visualization, and I encountered this book which contains many visualizations focused on Goddess worship.
The book was incredibly helpful in my learning process and development as a witch. The visualizations are very well written, and the poems that Mariechild includes near the end of the book are simply beautiful.
At the same time, now that I'm reading with more mature eyes, some of Mariechild's matristic viewpoint seems irritating rather than appropriate. Of course it's good to write for a specific audience, such as women, but I feel that she goes beyond that, and is actually putting men down to a certain degree. My vision is of a world where enlightened men and women work in partnership to create community, not where women dominate.
Overall, I would conditionally recommend this book to any women (or men who are difficult to offend) seeking to begin a course of study in the magical arts or to learn visualization techniques for stress reduction.

Wilson's history of the occult is a fine resource for anyone who wants to review the main figures of occultism in the least amount of time. There's a mini-biography of each person along with well presented details about that person's "occult life." Interesting and reasonably authoritative. Put it on the shelf. It's an excellent reference.

This wonderful book is a voluminous history of the occult, using the principle figures in the western occult tradition such as Crowley, Paracelsus and Pythagoras, among others. Wilson includes excellent background material and puts forth a compelling theory of why the occult is the science of the future, when people will one day realise their true power and importance in the world. Mr. Wilson is annoyed at the current world-view pushed by existentialists and scientists that humans are no more than insigninficant accidents in an indiffernt cosmos. He postulates an emerging human ability which he refers to as "Faculty X", a faculty of clarity, direction and purpose which goes beyond the ordinary senses and proposes how this may be the key to future human evolution. Much emphasis is placed on the will's role in human development throughout humanity's existence and its continued importance in the future, as well as the importance of contemporary humanity's researc! h into the subconscious mind. Wilson disregards the hyper-skepticism of modern science, and even delineates how the philosophy behind such a view is now outdated, and how the resulting world view has become narrow and cynical. Nevertheless, Wilson is very objective and gives a very critical analysis of all occult phenomena -- powers which are the key for humanity's future growth.

The only book on historical magic that I have found more in-depth than this is the Golden Bough. And that is a actually a huge compliment to Colin Wilson. Wilson does a great job of descibing detailed historical accounts of almost all facets of the occult in a simple way that is both inviting and enlightening. He strips common cliches like vampirism and lycanthropy of their mythology and horror movie camp and puts the beasts were they belong: in actual human history, scientifically and psychologically defining them as monsters only in their relationship to society and the human condition. The most amazing thing about this book however is that, with all its history, it is more than a history of the occult. Wilson has a premise--a premise so well woven into the history he provides, so unassuming, that you barely notice it. But when you do notice it, you won't ever see the world the same again. I've read countless books on mythology, monsters, magic and the occult in order to (silly, I know) give myself an edge in life, open my mind to certain possibilities and see beyond the ordinary. Colin Wilson has undoubtedly shown me the most.

You need to know I am biased because I know the author and contributed
to the book. My story is on pages 105-110.
Nevertheless, this book has a strong message for those who are on the
fence about reincarnation. (I used to be one of those people, too!).
The case histories alone will give you pause for thought.
Ann Jaffin doesn't force her insights on you, but leads you through
patterns that help you draw more aware conclusions due to insightful
evidence.
The book sparkles! Thoughtful reading for the open minded. Also,
its an excellent introduction to Edgar Cayce. [...]

Although the author is a long time Edgar Cayce student and a recognized expert on his life work, this book on karma and reincarnation is of interest not only to those who are already knowledgeable on the matter but also to those, like myself, who are interested in understanding it. The reader does not necessarily need to be familiar with Cayce's philosophy to benefit from reading this book, as it is full of wonderful insights and advice taken directly from Cayce's readings, like how to make decisions, how to turn negative events and things that happen to us into opportunities to learn about ourselves and become better persons. Ms. Jaffin provides many personal anecdotes and examples of how Cayce's teachings influenced and improved her own life. In fact, I dare to say that anyone who reads these pages with an open mind and heart will find that through prayer and meditation, he or she can achieve a higher degree of spirituality.

Ann Jaffin has written a terrific book that breaks down the concepts of reincarnation and karma, and the relationship between the two. She offers many touching examples from her own and others' lives that illustrate well her ideas and insights into how karma can affect us in our everyday lives. I like that she uses several quotes from the Edgar Cayce readings, along with their reference numbers, so that members of the ARE (Cayce's Association for Research and Enlightenment, edgarcayce.org) can look them up to read the full readings in their context. The book is written in a conversational tone and easy to understand for those new to these complex concepts, yet there is plenty in this book for those who have studied reincarnation and karma for years. There are more than 14,000 readings by Cayce on file and yet we are still just scratching the surface of the information, so I am happy to recommend this helpful and insightful book to others.

Ann Jaffin's book, based on the Edgar Cayce writings, provides an excellent understanding of reincarnation and how karma works in our every day life. The book describes the unique relationship between karma and reincarnation and gives examples of how the process unfolds and impacts us in the most unsuspecting ways. It is very well written and can be enjoyed by both the beginning seeker and the advanced student. A delightful read that is easy to understand and very insightful. I heartily recommend the book.

This is the story of how one woman found, through meditation and psychic training and channeling, help with grief, depression, codependency, control issues, low self-esteem, and childhood damages. She's my sister, she's the real deal, the book is well-written, and if you are interested in metaphysical religious thought, this book will be a safe and reliable guide. It makes no outrageous claims that the writer's philosophy is the only truth, or the sole answer to what might ail you. In fact, like Edgar Cayce, the writer has stayed active in Christian churches despite having pyschic abilities. Meditation, and getting or giving "readings" are helpful tools to a better life, she says, not by themselves miraculous guarantees of one. There are not too many copies of this one left, since it came out nearly seven years ago, so you may have to order a used copy. Trust me, it is worth it...ultimately uplifting and encouraging to all us struggling folks who haven't yet found our best path to God.

This book contains the story of how a practicing psychic developed her abilities and dealt with the problems of life that we all face. She tells her story in chronological order spanning a career of over twenty years and many different situations. Actual letters from people who have come to her for readings are included. She has a good way with language that makes the book comfortable and entertaining to read. Once I started the book, I found it hard to put down. This author is obviously a lady with great wisdom and insight. I recommend the book to anyone interested in how intuition can be developed, or to anyone who wants to read a true story of a very interesting lady who has done thousands of intuitive readings for a variety of people, ranging from criminals to professionals. I have been to this lady for readings on several occasions and have been impressed beyond words. As a psychologist, I was sceptical at first but am no longer; she obviously has a remarkable gift. She shares the development of that gift in this book.

I maintain that applied dream analysis, spectrometric analysis, and verification of current bodily and personality anomalies of current living subjects (grounded in the work of Ian Stevenson) assists the F.B.I. and other internationally authorized forensic scientists to 1. identify past victims (i.e.: Horst Wessel; Margot Frank; Anne Frank; James Byron Dean; John F. Kennedy; Martin Luther King; and beheaded victims of Islamic extremists), 2. assist the current human subject to regain their inner-vision and control of their life, 3. deduce the circumstances of their murder, 4. identify their murderer or friends through ritual re-enactments, and 5. establish a sense of inner-peace and justice if not outright retaliation against their reincarnated murderers.

Empirical Evidence Supporting the Concept of Reincarnation

In this extensive compilation of information, Dr. Stevenson, provides powerful empirical and documentary evidence supporting the concept that something (soul, kamma, etc.?) passes from a person who has died to a person who has been born. The presence of birthmarks in young children who claim to have been a dead person living in a specific location (e.g. house) in which that person actually lived, and located where forensic history (photos and descriptions) showed that person died from a bullet, knife or other wound is rather difficult to dismiss as mere sophistry. This is particularly so given the comparatively large number of such cases. Although these cases make up only a small part of this tome, for me, as an empirical scientist, they provide strong evidence supporting what Jesus said in Mathew (17:10):

And his disciples asked him, saying `Why then say the scribes that Elijah must first come before the arrival of the Messiah?' And Jesus answered and said unto them, `Elijah truly shall first come, and restore all things. But I say unto you, that Elijah is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.' Then the disciples understood that he spoke unto them of John the Baptist.

Ian Stevenson's Finest and Most Comprehensive Work

Anyone attempting to understand the scientific evidence suggestive of reincarnation MUST read this comprehensive text. Here, Stevenson has assembled an encyclopedia of what is arguably the most compelling aspect of the cases he has documented for over forty years - that some of these young children who claim to have experienced previous lives (or to whom previous lives have been attributed) bear highly unusual birthmarks or suffer from birth defects that correspond with wounds on the alleged "previous personalities" to a degree that defies coincidence. Stevenson's cautious and meticulous nature shine in his delineation of case after case, and ultimately the sheer number of strong, compelling case studies causes one to reexamine one's position on the possibility of reincarnation. At the least, Stevenson has documented a highly puzzling cultural phenomenon too pervasive to ignore. At best, he demonstrates a scientific vision that matches that of the greatest pioneers in the history of science.

Most Convincing Study of Reincarnation Ever Done

This is the most convincing study of reincarnation that hasever been undertaken by anyone. It provides page after page of genuinephysical evidence of the transmigration of souls. One of the things that one notices over and over again is that the physical injuries that have occurred in past lives are often likely to take the form of some sort of bodily peculiarity in the next life, such as the man who had been killed by a shotgun blast in a civil war battle, and whose next incarnation had a birthmark of exactly similar proportion and location as the wound. This is of far more value than the research into NDE's, I think, because of the physical evidence gathered. Although, it is impossible to absolutely prove such a thing, there are far too many well-documented cases for all of them to be passed off as merely coincidence. An excellent book for all those interested in the subject despite the outrageous price. Check in university libraries for this one like I did . . . unless you feel that you absolutely NEED to own this one.
