Death Is A Box of Crayons!

Review Date: 2007-01-13
"Death is like getting a box of crayons and a big fat coloring book in which to create the new beginnings of your next life." These words spoken to Linda Drake from "the other side" aptly summarize the premise of this enlightening book. For Linda Drake is an intuitive life path-healer whose work is often to connect her clients to their angels, guides, and loved ones who have passed over to the other side in what we commonly call death. Ultimately, that is the work of Spirit, that which connects us all to our true purpose in heaven.

Reaching Through the Veil to Heal does exactly that for thousands of men and women whose stories Drake shares with the reader. Meet the woman who has lived such a difficult life with a dysfunctional family and dying loved ones. It is her departed sister, whose children this woman is helping to cope, who reminds her that she needs to have less stress and darkness and to play more. Or read the account of parents whose children are now comforting them from the other side. There are many more similar and very different accounts herein, all weaving together a seamless picture of a realm where peace and joy are the true factors about "passing away."

These stories aren't told for the drama that might normally be associated with the exotic fascination men and women have with this unknown experience of death. They are stories directed to revealing one's divine purpose, the way to fully heal and release sorrow, the way to fully lived a purposeful life, the way to cope with losses of any kind not necessarily directly about death, the true karmic reasons for learning to consciously face the stages of death and dying (whether in a relationship or through physical death), and preparing for death but understanding it as a beginning rather than an empty, meaningless end.

Reaching Through the Veil is mystical, potent, sweet, and very, very practical in its approach that is bound to bring healing to every one who wisely chooses to read every page. Beautiful!!!

Dying is not what it's made out to be. Find out from the people who died and spoke through Linda to their friends and family on "this" side of the veil. One of the issues that really intrigued me was the fact that everyone who died what might be considered a violent or painful death was actually out of their bodies before anything happened. They watched their physical body go through that process. How cool is that!

Having lost my only child to suicide in 2004 I found myself searching for answers where none seem to exist. Reading Linda Drake's Reaching Through the Veil to Heal I found some serenity and peace. Her words brought comfort and insight into death and the actual process of dying, so much so that I recommended the book to a girlfriend of mine who recently lost her husband to cancer. This is an excellent book for those searching for a spiritual connection with lost loved ones.

When you read "Reaching Through the Veil to Heal," you will need a box of tissues at hand. The author, Linda Drake, is an intuitive life path healer. She uses her talents to help people contact those that have passed to the other side. Her purpose in writing this book is to help people better understand life, death, grief and the healing process. She shows you how to let go of the feelings that you have towards those of whom you have lost so that you can heal. Drake does not limit her advice to those who are dealing with the death of a loved one; she also talks to you about the grief that you have to deal with when relationships end. I really appreciate that she included a chapter on this because having a relationship end is really rough, even if the person hasn't passed on. She tells us, "For all of us, the loss of someone we care about, or even once cared about, leaves a scar, as our hearts have been wounded and be given the opportunity to heal." We still need to go through the stages of grief.

Mixed in with her discussions about the states of grief and how to deal with them, Drake shares stories of people she has helped heal. In spite of the pain of loss, these stories are beautiful and inspire hope that there is more out there when we pass. Her contact with the departed has allowed people to have closure and to get on with their healing. The people who have passed are also able to receive closure. She says that, "their soul is not leaving you; it is simply being released from a body that can no longer serve it." It is our fears of death and loss than can force these souls to linger here. We need to let them go. Ours souls are forever, not our bodies.

I recommend this book to people that are either in the process of losing someone or have lost someone close to them. Caregivers will really appreciate it because Drake acknowledges the hardships of what they are dealing with, not just losing the person, but also the helpless, hopeless feelings that some caregivers get when they become overwhelmed with their responsibilities. Hospice workers would also benefit from the knowledge shared in the book "Reaching Through the Veil to Heal."

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO ALL

Laurie Conrad's beautifully descriptive words flow from each page directly into the heart of the reader. You are taken into her world where you meet her friends and stroll the streets of Ithaca, New York with her, as she tells of clairvoyant experiences beyond life and death that touch the soul. This is a book filled with wondrous stories of love and light, all of them giving the assurance that what we call "death"--the leaving behind of our earthly form--is actually an entrance into a new realm. Laurie's clairvoyance and clairaudience have given her entrance into that realm, whereby she has remained in contact with many of her dear friends.

Laurie's gifts are many; she is a composer and a concert pianist as well as a healer, and she has a lightness of energy that permeates the pages of her book. Uplifting, humorous, touching, inspiring -- her words capture the reader and make you feel as though you are there, right beside her, as she interacts with her friends, many of whose photos are included in the book. You feel as though you know Laurie--and her friends--through the love that shines through her writing. One of the most beautiful things she describes is an overwhelming feeling that came over her when she was in a bad auto accident, with a bystander trying to help her in those first moments after the accident. As she looked into the eyes of this man bending over her, she felt his love and compassion for her. "And in that moment I knew, I knew completely and to the depths of my being--that the only important thing here, in this reality, is Love, the Higher Love, the Divine Love that each creature should have for every other creature here on Earth. Nothing else matters, nothing else truly exists here. Nothing else here is truly Real or Eternal--only the Soul and its vast Love."

Reading Laurie's book is like taking an inspirational journey from which you return uplifted and joyfully aware that what she says in another passage is absolutely true: "...we are all connected, human heart to human heart and hearts from realm to realm." As you read her book, you realize we are always in touch with our loved ones, whether they are on earth or in the Realms of Light. You understand the truth of her statement, "There is a constant interweaving of Hearts, both here on Earth and from realm to realm."

I am writing this review on what would have been my daughter's 50th birthday. She left the earth many years ago in an auto accident, but I feel her presence always within my own heart. I can speak from my own experience to the truth that is contained in Laurie's book of assurance and light.

Realms of Light exposes a world I didn't know existed. Laurie's stories about people she knew that she saw traveling into realms filled with radiant light after they had "died" were believable amd wondrous. She tells remarkable stories in a humble unassuming way.
It's hard to find words to say how I felt reading her books. There's a child-like innocence to the world she describes. It pulled me back to the innocence of my belief in God and the love I had for Jesus and Mary as a young child. She describes miracles as the daily event. This is the stuff that saints are made of yet she is an ordinary person, a concert pianist and composer.
Her words carry a power that triggers memories of events or people that need attention for forgiveness or healing.
After I finished Realms of Light I ordered The Spiritual Life of Plants and Animals. I absorbed it in one sitting. It made praying real and opened my eyes to the inner life of plants and animals. I'm amazed how aware all of life is. After reading these books I will never be the same. My life is changed.

Whatever one's personal beliefs in an Afterlife, this work will find an important spot on the bookshelf. I keep my copy on the table beside my "reading chair" and refer to it often - the stories are so real and compelling, and the characters completely true-to-life - people we have all met, or would love to meet.

I have no hesitation in recommending this book to anyone - it's a keeper!!

I love this book! - it is just wonderful! It flows beautifully, from Laurie's own experiences with clairvoyance to her interviews with other people about their experiences. A very inspiring and important book for anyone who has lost a loved one, be it parent or pet. The book has given me a new perspective on my own grieving, and offers the reader a look at what may be happening beyond our physical realm. I felt a great sense of calm while reading - almost like a meditation. I highly recommend this book

Jeffery Mishlove is one of those rare people who isn't afraid to stand up and tell things like they really are - regardless how much it may irk the would-be-gods of academia and other such hyper-indoctrinated priests of science. Read his books.

Also, has anyone else ever wondered why Reed Business Information, Inc., seems to have such a stranglehold on book reviews? Who bowed down and proclaimed them experts on everything anyway? Personally, whenever I encounter a poor or questioning book review from RBI and their cronies - I take that as a good sign in favor of the book or author.

Remember, scientism is inherently hostile towards all things outside its very limited parameters of comprehension, and scientists hold nothing sacred - except for the Holy Dollar Bill and science itself. And if you think scientism isn't a religion, just drill any given scientist with the tools of ethnomethodology and pull a little reflexivity into the discussion - and watch them froth at the mouth like their bible-thumpin' baptist counterparts that they hate so much (because they are exactly like them but just dressed differently. Scientists have a fetish for white labcoats).

Anyway, read Dr. Mishlove's books and enjoy them. They will deliver more food for thought in one book than most people will ever encounter during six years (or more) of kissing-up for a higher degree.

Remember that when you wake up.

From the history to the folklore to the scientific exploration of psychic phenomena, Jeffrey Mishlove has compiled an amazing resource for anyone interested in the topic.

Whether it's Rabindranath Tagore and the autistic Albert Einstein in a great tete a tete or the little known side effects of Lie Algebras in the absurdly complex maintenance of observer created reality, Mishlove has stalwartly and never unaccidentably fashioned the great hidden thing of the nineties. Beware, kids, and work on your number theory!

Written, in part, as his Doctoral thesis, he touches on a wide range of subjects. Topics from the commonality between mythology and religion (a la Joseph Campbell) to psychokinetic theory, Kirilian photography & Psi phenomena - will bring you up to date (circa 1982) on the research preformed by the West's foremost authorities at UCLA, Princeton and SRI (Stanford Research Institute.) Mishlove's own amazement of the subject matter is only foreshadowed by the incredible subjects he is reporting on. Look for an updated editon in mid-97

The Very Best Coffee Table Parapsychology Book!

Review Date: 2002-12-05
THE ROOTS OF CONSCIOUSNESS was written by the world's one and only doctor in parapsychology, Dr. Jeffrey Mishlove. Few people are as well-connected with pioneers in the field of conciousness as Mishlove, and his lifetime of experience with psychic research is reflected in what is certainly the most complete compendium of consciousness studies ever.

Have you ever wondered whether people's feelings towards one another could be captured on film, or whether animals can communicate with humans? Would you like to better understand metal-bending, psychokinesis, UFOs and out-of-body phenomenons? If you answered, "yes" to any of the above, this is the book for you.

THE ROOTS OF CONSCIOUSNESS is large (wide, thick and heavy), with lots of excellent black and white photographs and illustrations, which makes it an ideal conversation-starter when placed atop your coffee table. By flipping this book open randomly to any given page, one is immediately rewarded with fascinating insights into the details of some branch of parapsychology. Mishlove's interdisciplinary expertise lends this book tremendous depth and breadth of scope, as it includes history, mathematics, physics, psychology, and religion.

I love the way this book is organized into several main sections which cover history, folklore, scientific studies, and theories to explain what is going on when people demonstrate extraordinary events and human abilities. I appreciate the balanced way that Mishlove covers the facts free from hyperbole -- and the way he includes the perspective of skeptics such as James Randi along with the point of view of researchers in the field of psi.

While THE ROOTS OF CONSCIOUSNESS is currently out of print, it is well worth finding a copy!

I went to see Gordon Smith as part of Hay House's Mystical Connections - it was the first time I'd ever seen a medium in action. I didn't get a reading but saw others validate the dates, names and places that Gordon Smith gave them and was so fascinated with what I saw that I bought this book. Its an autobiographical account of how Gordon became aware of his abilities to connect with the Spirit World, ignored them, then rediscovered them and has used them as a tool to help those suffering with grief. Amazing to think that he can actually talk to the dead and written with a great deal of respect for his work with the spirit world. This book will really open your eyes to the existence of a different realm and reinforce your belief in the integrity of some mediums.

I have begun carrying this around in my briefcase, so when people ask what my opinion is of the relationship between science and magic, I can wave it at them. Okay, not really. But I do quote it at them. And I have to say that the revision of this classic essay is thrilling. Other reviewers mention things like using TVs as crystal balls . . . and that's all interesting. But the serious magician will find much of interest in this slim volume beyond mere technique. I've been looking for a "magical method" that can compete with the scientific method. SSOTBME lays much of the groundwork for that method -- and if you read it back in 1974 I'd humbly recommend rereading this new edition. Now that it's back in print, this baby is on my "mandatory reading" list.

Kept me glued to the book, totally packed with ideas and insights

Have you ever considered using the static on a TV screen as a crystal ball, staring until the chaotic noise morphs into sensible and suggestive shapes? Would you be inclined to use tarot cards as inspiration for bedtime stories while tucking a child away at night?

If so, or if not, you should definitely read SSOTBME. Ramsey Dukes writing style is consistently thought provoking and hilarious, a combination that makes me eager to keep turning pages and to see what unfolds in each of his books. This book is essentially about occult philosophy, and considers the characteristics of different worldviews (magic, science, religion, and art). As with the other Ramsey Dukes work I have read so far, the book has very clear thesis and subject... yet, it is almost impossible to pin down the one main thing the book is "about", because the core subject of the book seems to be used as a starting point from which countless interesting anecdotes and ideas spin off.

The most amazing thing about this book was the way it sucked me into reading further and further. After the first chapter, I had my doubts. But soon enough I couldn't put it down, and couldn't stop myself from pestering my girlfriend by relaying little bits of the book to her. She found them weird, and probably found me weirder for it, but also seemed to have found me even more endearing as a result. So, this is the type of book that is packed with one interesting thing after another, and will give you loads of thoughts to digest. I am definitely looking forward to rereading it. Occasionally I pick it up and read a random page, and have been guaranteed to find something interesting. After reading it, I could very clearly feel why this book has become an influential classic, particularly in the development of chaos magic.

This book was particularly interesting to read after reading another Dukes book, Words Made Flesh, because there is a very consistent thread of ideas that run through his books. The added revised chapters in this book are absolutely welcome, and make it very clear that Dukes' writing style has improved over the last 30 years.

As Mr. Dunn says in the review below, there is more to this volume than technique. SSOTBME is primarily a book concerning magickal philosophy, which differentiates it from almost all other works in the genre. Whithin it are no formulas or rituals or fantastic visions from the "Other World". What you will find is vastly more useful: Dukes' clear, easy-going language that proposes the idea that a Magickal world-view is actually healthy, even useful(!), in modern society.
Even though it's not bound in frog skin or covered in ominous sigils, no other book has proven as valuable in my own personal practice. This little volume is a great promoter of individual practice and innovation, as opposed to a model to emmulated. Even my Grandma thought it was an impressive read.

Fox asks legitimate questions and looks for a more practical explanation of Arcady's feats.

This book is an outstanding introduction to using one's brain.

I am buying additional copies to send to my friends who follow and believe in the popular "psychics" of our day. Mr. Mystikos's name could very easily be replaced with any of those psychic's names.

Alexander Fox is a curious fifth grader who stands apart from his friends because he believes in thinking for himself rather than accepting claims without first exploring the evidence. Like a super sleuth investigator, Alexander sifts for clues, searches for answers, and asks plenty of questions when met with something mysterious or unbelievable, especially when a schoolmate claims to have witnessed the supernatural feats of one Arcady Mystikos.

But when he meets the great Mystikos, a man whose powers have astounded the wealthy residents of the town, Alexander realizes that he may have met his match, a case that is too tough to crack. Admiration for Mystikos among the town folk causes the youngster to examine his own beliefs: Is Alexander a close-minded person, unwilling to accept the mysteries of the unknown? Or can he show his friends that claims of the paranormal aren't always so mysterious?

Young readers ages eight and up will delight in this fascinating tale and cheer Alexander on as he tries to uncover the truth about the powers of Mr. Mystikos. Alexander Fox and the Amazing Mind Reader will start young minds on their journey toward independent thinking, open-mindedness, skeptical inquiry, and critical awareness.

This short novel introduces Alexander Fox, a sixth grader with obvious natural skepticism and a desire to reach the truth through logic and critical thinking. Although others accuse Alexander of being "the boy who doesn't believe anything," Alexander points out that he always has an open mind but that "unusually strong claims require unusually strong proof."

When Arkady Mystikos comes to town and professes to have psychic abilities, Alexander is determined to figure out the truth. Alexander is an engaging young hero and one with whom young readers will easily identify. Although the didactic nature of this slim volume is apparent, the story is interesting enough to keep young readers involved, and the attractive illustrations complement the text.

This book would make a good choice for young skeptics age 8 and up, as well as all children who enjoy mystery and detective stories. Fans of Encyclopedia Brown will be sure to find this book interesting. Further adventures involving the skeptical Alexander would be most welcome as well!

This is my first Judy Orloff purchase, but I intend to purchase more. These CDs spoke to me because many of her experiences mirrored my own. The solutions she offers to dealing with problems I still face are helping me cope with my own personal issues. I highly recommend these CDs to anyone who feels adrift in today's society with no obvious place to turn for help.

De-mystifys Psychic Abilities-a must!

This was the first book or audio tape I purchased from author Judith Orloff, M.D. She de-mystifies the psychic abilities that lie dormant in each one of us and approaches the subject from a logic point of view. I have since purchased two other books from this author and can't wait for the next one. I am truly impressed with her abilities to teach this subject from the basis that this is a practical sense we all need to engage to enhance our lives. I highly recommend these tapes!

I was so moved when Judith Orloff talked about her experiences growing up in Southern California as an intuitive empath, the years when she turned her back on her intuitive insights in order to practice traditional medicine, working with hospice patients at a VA hospital, helping her mother let go as she was dying or the various interactions with patients in her psychiatric practice. It was all so fascinating. It wasn't until she started discussing how we can also develop our second sight that she lost me. Maybe it's because it came so easily to her while the rest of us must really work at it. She does make you believe that it's all worth it in the end. She has chosen to share her amazing gift with the world and I for one am grateful.

Dr. Judith Orloff is a true medicine woman. A board-certified psychiatrist and psychic from birth, Dr. Orloff shares techniques that foster a right and left brain approach to healing from the intellect and intuitive side. Still a practising psychiatrist, Dr. Orloff offers sound wisdom based on her clinical training for anyone who seeks to enhance their healing practice. What is to be noted about Dr. Orloff is that (A) she was born psychic and it was something passed down from her family, (B) she went through a rigorous medical training and still is willing to be acountable to an authority, and (C) has found a way to harness her gifts with a true spirit of service to others.

One of the Best Books on This Topic

I've been reading books of a spiritual &/or paranormal nature for about 5 years now, and I have to say that "Beyond Boundaries: The Adventures of a Seer" is one of the best I've read to date! It includes many great stories from the author's years as a "seer", information about how she conducts readings (i.e., what to expect, what & where she sees, and how she interprets this info.) as well as discussions around a large number of spiritual concepts/thoughts/ideas.

As you read this book, you can actually feel the compassion of Louise Hauk! It's easy to see that she truly wants to spread the word to help others to get the most out of their lives. I also love the way she uses various thought-provoking analogies to help make complex spiritual/"paranormal" concepts easier to understand & use - they're quite creative!

Overall, I found this book to be an enjoyable, insightful read. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in spirituality - it has a LOT to offer!

I highly recommend this book

This book gives me hope and comfort. After losing a loved one I have been searching desperately and exploring my spirituality. Heart-Links is filled with stories of wonderful connections to loved ones. Louise's compassion and caring comes through as so much of what she does. Her sharing of her incredible gifts shows me how I can also become a multi-sensory intuitive being. This book has brought me some peace in my heart. The exercises will give me tools to guide me. I feel that people of many different beliefs and religions can benefit from the lessons and stories. I encourage everyone searching to read this wonderful book!

This book captivated me. Ms. Hauck tells of true life challenges, from a perspective of love and insight, and offers tools for dealing with obstacles in our lives. Her ability to make sense out of others' seemingly overwhelming problems is inspiring and uplifting, offering us all a glimpse at the possibilty of enlightenment and understanding of what life and death are all about. I've read it several times and have given copies of it to many people.

After much hassle trying to obtain this book, I finally got it and am very glad that I did.

Not only is this book about different methods of spirit communication, it is also a very thorough look at the history of spirit communication and Spiritualism. There are also quizzes, exercises and journal space within the book to track your progress.

I also recommend Christopher Penczak's "Spirit Allies" in conjunction with this book, as both have so much information to offer a reader who is interested in the topics herein.

This book, really introduces you to mediumship quite well. Delivered in such a way, that goes through the history of Mediumship (and related phenomena), and exercises for developing your own Medium skills. Each chapter is delivered as a "Lesson", complete with questions at the end of each lesson to reinforce what you've learnt. Now I myself, am a occultist, and am well accustomed to high magick, but Mediumship was fairly new to me, or atleast in this mannerism. I recommend this to anyone with an interest in conversing with the deceased, crossed over loved ones, or spirits in general. However for those more adept, and already accustomed to Mediumship, this really isn't for you, but for beginners, it is an excellent source.
