Interesting and very well-writtenReview Date: 2009-01-04
This is a man who tries to bring humanity to an environment which is chronically understaffed and where patients and their families can, at times, be unappreciative or even hostile. There's not a single sentence that doesn't ring true, nor a hint of self-importance or arrogance.
Another takeaway, at least for this reader: the author never suggests he's underpaid - even though he obviously is.
Buy this book to de-mystify the ER. It's likely that one day you'll be there yourself, or waiting for someone else.

Author of The Blue Cotton Gown confirms the truth of Paul Austin's bookReview Date: 2008-11-30
As a Nurse-Midwife, and author of The Blue Cotton Gown: A Midwife's Memoir, [[ASI N:0807072893 The Blue Cotton Gown: A Midwife's Memoir]] I know that self-revelation is risky. You must ask yourself, how will I feel if my patients read this.
As the spouse of an OB/Gyn, I know that physicians are trained to exhibit confidence. For a doc to share his inner life, his sadness, emotional isolation and doubt, is a gift.
Every physician and nurse should read this book. Every health care provider in training should read this book. Everyone who has ever gone to a doctor or will go to a doctor should read this book, and that includes all of us.
Dr. Paul Austin will take you in the ER and reflect on his personal lifeReview Date: 2008-11-18
Buy it as a gift for someone! It will change their way of thinking.
Honest and empatheticReview Date: 2008-11-15
Within the covers of this thoughtful and moving debut, Austin graciously allows us an insider's look at the struggles and rewards of his job, as well as the toll it can take on a growing family, especially when the detrimental effects of persistent sleep-deprivation fray nerves and breed frustration. (When the author finds an innovative way around these struggles, we silently cheer for his ingenuity and for the sake of his patient, empathetic wife, herself a former nurse.)
Unlike many of our nation's first responders (and ER doctors are definitely first responders), Austin and his ilk often don't get the respect that a fireman (which Austin has also been) or a paramedic might, and they certainly don't receive the full measure of respect they're due. (Have you ever tried staying up all night, on constant alert, dealing with bleeding, vomiting, angry people---many of them drunk and violent---or patients with chest pains and grisly car crash wounds that need immediate attention and split-second medical decisions? All this, while frequent understaffing creates delays that in turn create patients so angry that once they are finally seen it can complicate the process of diagnosis? ...I thought not.)
With equal measures of honesty and empathy, Paul Austin has created a timeless memoir that deserves a wide readership. As Richard Selzer's "Letters to a Young Doctor" helped to open the public's eyes to the general practitioner, so can "Something for the Pain" give us important insights into the working conditions for an ER physician. I do know that without a doubt, the next time I visit an ER, no matter my circumstances, I plan to extend a measure of empathy to the doctor on duty and not just expect it. And I plan to be thoroughly grateful--and definitely sober.

Interesting Christian medical dramaReview Date: 2004-10-17
I'm curious as to which real hospital the Doctor works at, it would be interesting to know if the difficult patient/ Doctor plots are in any way based in reality. I think the Christian faith is a constant theme throughout but it is handled well, no fraud ministers, not pushy in display of faith.

Wonderful ReadingReview Date: 2003-12-08
I have found a new favorite in this writing team of Hannah Alexander and am anxious for the next in the series "Solemn Oath" to arrive in the mail.
Touching characters, medical accuracy, and a great plot!Review Date: 2003-01-10
The characters are wonderful and will live in your heart long after you put the book down. Read the other two books in this series, too, which are equally as good.
I enjoyed the very human qualities of the characters -- they were vulnerable yet all had strengths sometimes they didn't even know they had. Even the Christian characters weren't perfect, but true-to-life, especially Dr. Bower whose endearing mishaps only added to the strength of his character.
Sometimes the middle section of a book sags, but that wasn't true with this book. It started out interesting and remained so throughout.
The one disappointment in the end is not knowing what becomes of Lukas's relationship with Mercy. You have to read the other two books to find out!
A thoroughly satisifying book with a strong (though not intrusive) spiritual message.
Like ER, but with positive moral values!Review Date: 2002-03-01
This is the first of a series - the second is Solemn Oath and last is Silent Pledge. Reading them in order is highly recommended!
This wonderful series is centered around a small-town hospital emergency room in Missouri.
The medical parts ring true for a good reason - Hannah Alexander is a pen name for a husband/wife writing team and the husband is an ER physician! These books will appeal to both men and women, and contain suspense, drama, a little romance and a lot of inspiration. I became very attached to the characters of Lukas, Mercy, Clarence, Ivy, and many more. The story also paints a wonderful picture of God's forgiveness and grace in the character of Theodore and others' responses to him.
The only downside to these books is that there are only 3 of them and I've read them all...
Happy reading!

You Can't Judge A Book By The Cover...Review Date: 2009-01-05
Amazon Rating: 5 stars
Bre, CeeCee, Neesha and Nicky are known as the HOOD RATS. Four friends that each tell their individual stories of love, heartache, and pain. Each girl living the hood life, living the best life they can with what they have.
Bre is the quiet, shy one out of the group. The one that seemingly has it together the most. She is the voice of reason. The one who will intervene between the other friends to keep the peace. She lives vicariously through her girls' lives, since she is more laid back.
CeeCee is a hood rat in every definition of the word. She is a mother of three children whom always seem to be in the care of their grandmother. CeeCee loves to smoke weed, drink and party and although she has a man, she has someone on the side as well. Will she realize that she is playing a dangerous game before it is too late?
Neesha will do whatever and whoever to get what she wants. She does not care what anyone says about her. She has the mentality of a dude when it comes to sex; she will have one coming in the front door and the other leaving out the back. Say what you will but the girl is getting paid. She is the fighter in their clique. You mess with one of her girls, you best believe you are will receive a beat down.
Nicky is the one who has suffered the greatest loss. With all the losses she has experienced she lets life beat her down to the point where she begins trying to cope with the heartache that she has experienced through the use of drugs. It has her doing and acting in ways she normally would not.
When tragedy strikes, the bond of friendship will be tested. In HOOD RATS you will find a story of friendship, love, betrayal, tragedy, lies and deceit. Do not judge this book by its cover because it is not the typical hood book that you would normally get coming out of TCP. I was pleasantly surprised to see that this had positive attributes in it. I look forward to reading more by this author. The story had me constantly turning the pages.

A TEST BETWEEN FRIENDSHIP...Review Date: 2008-12-22
E.R. McNAIR
The Hood Rats by E.R. McNair takes you through the hood of Gary, Indiana through the eyes of four friends, Bre, Nesha, CeeCee and Nicky. As each girl narrates their own ups and downs of their friendship and life on the streets, you'll feel like your right there with them.
While the bond of friendship is tested and easily broken from all of the lies, deceit, and betrayal, will they be able to over come this? E.R. McNair constructs an incredibly realistic storyline mixed with real-life drama. I was about to give up on TCP, but with this new release I'm glad I didn't. I give this and 9.5.

Beware of the quiet one!Review Date: 2008-07-18
Both worked at the sports bar Aces High, he was a bouncer, she a waitress and after a year she felt it was time to go for what she wanted and leave her past behind. Andrew vowed something many years ago and it seems his resolve is breaking when he finds his true feelings for Angela.
This is not a happy go lucky love story, there are people who want Andrew dead and they will stop at nothing short of their own lives to see that happen. Only Andrew can not die, he holds a secret that may have been the end of World War II, and when the Beast within rears his head, all should take cover.
Jimmy Gillentine pens an amazing tale of love, horror, betrayal and heartbreak. I can not tell you how quickly you are pulled into the story line, and before you know it the end is upon you. I was pleased to hear there would be a continuation of Mr. Gillentine's work because I will have that on my list to pick up. Absolutely perfect! 5 Hearts

Of Blood and the Moon - A ReviewReview Date: 2008-05-31
For a first-time author, there's a lot of promise within the pages of Of Blood and the Moon.
Highly recommended.
Gripping!!Review Date: 2008-05-25
Okay, first, let me make one thing perfectly clear. When it comes to horror, I am extremely picky. There are few authors out there that can hold my interest in a story. I grew up on horror, and I guess it's made me a little cynical.
That out of the way, let me tell you Jimmy Gilletine is one of the new faces of horror. His book, Of Blood and the Moon, is a page turner from begining to end. To call it a thrill ride just dosen't do it enough justice. The characters live and breath in my imagination to the point where I really cared what happened to them, good and bad. Jimmy has done something here that just isn't seen in horror anymore. He drops a love story right in the middle of it, and he makes it work!
All true horror fans: You need to check out this book! You won't be disappointed!

The Littles to the RescueReview Date: 2004-01-25
Third Book in The Littles SeriesReview Date: 2002-10-27
This was one of my favorite books (and cartoon series) when I was a kid. It was given to me by my grandmother when I was about eight-years-old. Not only are the black-and-white illustrations terrific, but the Littles are extremely resourceful and imaginative in this story, using most things people throw away as tools, decorations, etc. My only two complaints are that the book has a rather abrupt ending (or perhaps there's a page missing from my book; I have had it for about 15 years), and that it's a bit ...., though younger readers may not pick up on this. Still, "The Littles to the Rescue" is a fun adventure story for children age 7 - 10. Highly recommended.
Best book in this exciting seriesReview Date: 2005-02-17
This is probably my favorite book in the series, prominently featuring two other families of little people, the Specks and the Tinies. These two clans have an irrational distrust of each other, and the Littles get caught up in their struggles just when they desperately need to be focused on the pregnancy of Mrs. Little.
The elements that make the series consistently great are also on full display. The little people are essentially living in isolated pockets in the vast and dangerous frontier created by humans, and they must rely on their own wits to carve out a decent living. The problems they face, and the solutions that they struggle to find, are amazingly realistic, and there is no need to create evil-minded villains when the terrain is so inhospitable. Seeing the other clans in action also shows that the methods of living life on such a small scale can be very localized; the Specks, who live in the trunk of a tree, have an entirely different way of life than the Littles.
This is a charming series, with hundreds of thoughtful details that will delight children with their ability to portray a real world. Interactions with housecats and toy gliders are particularly thrilling.
Also, I would be remiss not to mention the wonderful sepia-toned drawings by Roberta Carter Clark. They mirror the text's adherence to realism, and give us a very graphic and fun look at the scenes that the text describes.
Highly recommendedReview Date: 2003-08-21
In this book, Mrs. Little is coming due for the birth of her baby. But, with a snowstorm covering the area, the Littles decide that they must telephone Aunt Lily (a nurse from four houses away - quite a long distance) and tell her NOT to come. However, when a human intercepts the call, Aunt Lily decides that the call was a call for help, and she and Cousin Dinky set off in his glider. Disaster strikes when a gust of wind throws Lily out of the glider, and now it is up to the Littles to stage a rescue. It's a dangerous world out there for a little person, and Aunt Lily has fallen into adventures in a big wood!
I am a fan of Mary Norton's Borrowers books, and was saddened by the knowledge that there would never be any more. When I discovered Mr. Peterson's Littles books I was overjoyed, hoping that these would be just as good. Well, I wasn't disappointed!
The story in this book is charming, and quite entertaining. My children and I were thrilled with the story, and look forward to reading more of the adventures of the Littles. We highly recommend this book to you.
