As I scrambled to meet the direction of my CEO to get our disaster plan updated in order to deal with the pressing threat of terrorism it was recommended to get this text by a peer. After reading this book, I can say without a doubt, that it is one of finest disaster works I have ever been exposed. It has taken complex issues and presented them in a real world method that makes comprehension and application quite easy. Frankly this is a must have reference for emergency service and management personnel in public and private sectors. Outstanding work!

Well written and informative. Good review of incident management system. The information provided regarding disaster medicine is from the EMS response point of view and is useful for Emergency Physicians and Disaster researchers from the point of view of understanding EMS response in disasters. This book should be part of the overall collection of any physician working in area of Disaster Medicine.

This product is excellent for providing a quick reference to different medications. I love that I can turn to the medicine page and find out why the patient is taking that medicine. There are to many available medications to easily remember.

The pediatric reference section - for typical HR, kg and such for a certain age, is also wonderful.

Great reference book to have at 3 a.m. when you're brain may not be functioning at optimum capacity.

I've been using the EMS field guide since I graduated as a Paramedic in 1990...

Important and useful data is presented in a clear and concise format.

The guide is constantly updated to reflect the latest AHA guidelines.

Well designed, rugged and small enough to fit in a shirt pocket - who could ask for more ?

P.S. I live and work in Israel - I am not affiliated in any way with the guys who publish the EMS field guide...

I have carried the Pedi-Wheel in my fanny pack for a few years. The few times I have used it have earned high marks for its compactness, readibility, and ease of use. The most important feature for me is the "weight to age" reference. It allows me to calculate dosages when only an age of the patient is known. Estimating weights of small children is obviously more critical than adults.

The Fire agency that I work for has placed a Pedi-Wheel in all of the drug boxes.

As a member of the EMS discipline for 15 years I had always been on the look out for a tool to assist me in the stressful situation when dealing with pedi's and small children. Every tool I'd use was to complicated or did not display the full range of information needed during the typical medical aid call. The Pedi Wheel solves all those facets. Any dealings with a pedi or small child is covered. I highly recommend the pedi wheel.

I only wish the Pedi-Wheel First Responder was available 25 years ago. I have found this device to be a most valuable tool in pediatric emergencies. All first responders and Dispatch centers should incorporate the Pedi-Wheel First Responder in their everyday work life! I recommend that First Responder training classes make this a part of the curriculum.

If you provide maternity care for mothers and babies you must read this book. The information is presented in a very user friendly way, complete with many mnemonics to help you quickly recall vital information in an emergency. Thoroughly researched and cited, this book is chock full of information and helpful hints. The differential diagnoses are particularly welcome, especially when trying to assess the etiology of pain. Highly recommended.

I read a lot of this type stuff and this is one of the better ones. No he is not on Boston EMS or FDNY but he tells it like it is and I really like the unique format of the book. Short stories with what he is really thinking in italics. The book is a little pricey but for the money a real bargain.

Refreshing Approach to EMS Implementation and P2
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-01
This is a refreshing departure from the conventional dry approach to implementing ISO 14001. The authors de-emphasize compliance and place the focus of their EMS model on Pollution Prevention. They show with concrete examples, case studies, and very convincing explanations that when P2 becomes the focus of the EMS, companies redirect energies toward reducing costs associated with waste and pollution management. With a carefully planned set of metrics and diligent monitoring they show how these actions lead to improved environmental performance, which in turn leads to improved compliance.

We have been using this book as a training manual at several industrial facilities in Jordan for well over a year and have had remarkable results. I highly recommed this volume to those who are looking to bring their oranizations into a truly proactive approach to waste and pollution management. A very nice feature of this book is that the subjects of Life Cycle Costing and environmental cost accounting are nicely mingled. These subjects are often separated by quite different approaches to assessing cost/benefits of cleaner production investments. But the authors have linked the tools into a practical appoach for rapidly assessing the financial attracctiveness of P2 investments. The engineering and business talents of the authors are well matched, bringing not just a reference for the practicioner, but a very nice tool. Five stars plus for this volume.

Achieving Environmental Excellence

Achieving Environmental Excellence: Integrating Pollution Prevention (P2) and Environmental Management System (EMS) to Increase Profits by Avrom Bendavid-Val and Dr. Nicholas Cheremisinoff is an excellent book for senior-level management. It provides a step-by-step, methodical approach to maximizing the long-term profitability and sustainability of a business by merging pollution prevention (P2) techniques with an environmental management system (EMS), and does so in a unique manner. The book was written as a sequel to Green Profits: The Managers Handbook to ISO 14001 and Pollution Prevention (Butterworth Heinemann Publishers, 2001). Whereas Green Profits focuses on the fundamental tools for applying pollution prevention within the framework of an EMS, the present volume goes beyond by providing the reader with a flexible management structure that illustrates, with very straightforward explanations and examples, how companies can manage both regulatory and voluntary environmental concerns to maximize profits and minimize environmental risk. While there is literally an ocean of articles and books covering P2 and EMS, rarely can one find the two subjects melded together and in such a unique way. The authors present a model approach to developing a formalized EMS with P2 as the principle engine for financial performance tracking. The concept borderlines the subject of metrics, but focuses only on financial gains associated with good environmental performance. The concept presented is simple, but very eloquently explained. Surprisingly the literature does not present similar discussions.
There are eight chapters. Chapter 1 provides a detailed overview of EMS and ISO 14001. Chapter 2 provides an overview of P2. Of particular interest in this chapter is a breakdown of the costs associated with environmental compliance. The authors make a good point with regard to how traditional approaches tend to heavily discount so-called soft-costs, thereby opening the door for future and long-term liabilities. Chapter 3 discusses the authors integrated EMS/P2 model program. This chapter sets the stage for the balance of the book and is worth a careful reading. Chapter 4 titled Getting Started, describes for the reader innovative approaches to establishing the entire P2/EMS program. Chapter 5 covers pre-planning activities. Chapter 6 covers planning priority environmental management initiatives. Chapter 7 covers planning pollution prevention initiatives and is an exceptionally well written chapter providing good information on life cycle costing and introducing unique concepts like P2 investment portfolios. Chapter 8 wraps up the volume by focusing on monitoring and the importance of top management review, and how to implement environmental management initiatives.
The book includes two in-depth case studies, reviews of six types of environmental management initiatives, has a glossary of EMS and P2 terms, photographs, diagrams, charts and calculations, and end-of-chapter summaries. It also includes an examination of the relationships between activities in each phase and the requirements of ISO14001 and how a company would fulfill ISO 14001 certification requirements through an integrated EMS/P2 approach.
The book is a great volume for senior managers, EH&S personnel, compliance officers, and engineers (especially because of the life cycle costing and risk assessment principles laced throughout the book). The authors are highly knowledgeable about the subject and their bios support a large international experience in applying the principles and practices presented in this volume. Dr. Cheremisinoff in particular is a well-known chemical engineer that has contributed many books and articles on pollution prevention to the industrial press.

It will make the students comprehension of sometimes difficult concepts more then bearable. They will have a confidance gained by knowledge built, that will allow care to be adminstered in a compitant manner. I wish more text's were able to accomplish what this author did.

In general, textbooks for EMTs and paramedics tend not to give women and their special issues a lot of ink. Obstetrical and gynecological texts for physicians and nurses aren't usually applicable to first responders. Essentials of Prehospital Maternity Care is evidently the only book, in print or out, that fills this large void. Fortunately, it's excellent, full of current information, useful illustrations, and clear procedures. The author's background as a paramedic and an Ivy League-educated midwife gives her valuable insights into the subjects she writes about. Although this book is obviously designed for classroom instruction, it doesn't read like a textbook. The author's style makes even difficult material interesting enough to hold the attention of independent students at any level of expertise. Parents-to-be could also learn a great deal from it, no matter whether they expect to deliver at home.
