Learning the fine art of reading aloud to othersReview Date: 2002-06-30
In addition to choosing a selection, the Basic Principles section of the textbook deals with Analyzing the Selection, Voice Development for Oral Interpretation, and The Use of the Body in Oral Intepretation. Consequently, the mind which analyses the selection is as crucial as the voice and body that interpret it for the listening audience. You will be impressed with the vareity of selections that are includes for analysis and oral interpretation. For example, in the Voice Development chapter you have selections as diverse as Garrison Keillor's "Lake Wobegon Days," Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky," Mathew Arnold's "Dover Beach," and a Navajo Ceremonial Chant.
"Oral Interpretation" then looks in turn as the major genres of writing that can be interpreted: Prose, Drama, and Poetry. There is also a chapter devoted to Group Performance, which tends to cut across the other three areas. The approach of Lee and Gura is to break down each form into specific elements that can be addressed in interpreting the text. This means speech phrases, balancing sentences, and tone color for prose; scenography, embodying characters, and physical focus for drama; and allusions, figures of speech, and sensory appeals for poetry. There are also appendixes offering Some Notes on Directing the Group Performance, Building and Presenting a Program, and a Brief History of Theories of Interpretation. The goal, as with the main part of the textbook, is to prepare teachers and students of oral interpretation for all eventualities.
"Oral Interpretation" was the textbook I used when teaching this particular class because of its comprehensiveness and its emphasis on practical advise. For me the key part was always the critical understanding of the selection, taking the piece apart so that you understood how it worked and could put it back together in performance and breath life into the words. Students always appreciated the specificity of the examples, where a paragraph could be devoted to taking apart a single sentence or appreciating the particular combinations of vowels and consonants that appear in a particular line of rhyme. Even those students who feel that they their voices are unsuited to oral intepretation, can appreciate the critical approach to understanding literature that they learn from this volume.

Great Communications BookReview Date: 2000-08-07
Frenzel starts out by explaining baseband and broadband signals and what types of signals are usually carried on what frequencies. I like that he explains why modulation and carriers are needed and how transmission are affected. This is the first book I have seen to explain reason behind operations on signals. Frenzel uses plenty of examples and explainations of operations performed for each type of modulation. The first few chapters are about the types of modulations and why those modulations are used in particular areas. Then Frenzel explains the process for AM, FM, and PM and gives example problems.
Compared to the Couch communications book "Digital and Analog Communications", if you have to get Couch, get Frenzel's as a reference and study guide. You'll never regret it.

#4 - ONE OF THE RARE 5 PLUS STARS - DEFINITELY A KEEPER!Review Date: 2005-12-11
Number 4 is a series of related characters starting with HIGH PLAINS WIFE [670] - 715 - 734 - 752,THIS ONE + 765.
Betsy Hunter, friend of Mariah Scott and Rayna Ludgrin, is finally getting her story told. She has taken over the laundry for the people of the surrounding area from Mariah. Oh the tales these ladies could tell.
Betsy's mother and brother, Joshua Gable [next story, 765] wants to see her married and settled but not to a mountain man.
It has been five years since her husband, Charlie has died. Betsy does not believe that she will ever find a man to love like she loved Charlie.
Duncan Hennessey tries to drive Betsy off with insults and a mean attitude. But she is fascinated by the dour man. And makes the mistake, this is September I think, of trying to eat and drive. Her strawberry pie attracts the attention of a couple of bears who are getting ready for hibernation.
Much as Duncan does not like women in general, he has suffered because of one woman's lies, he comes to Betsy's rescue.
[You have to take the story from there - Wow! is it good]
Betsy's over-protective mother, grandmother, and brother lead her to believe that Hennessey died.
Yup! more lies done in the name of love.
You still have to like Joshua for all his bumbling ways.
We also find out that Rayna is pregnant and it seems that Mariah is joining her. They also love to tease Betsy about the joys of the marriage bed, of which she is well aware.
You will enjoy this love match and the so interesting way it progresses. I have listed all 5 of these books as keeper to be enjoyed again in the near future.
We are still left up in the air about Duncan's relationship with Dillion Hennessey of 715 - THE HORSEMAN. Drat!
Now, Will there be more stories? - As Betsy has 3 more brothers, James who is married already, all younger than her.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED --m - Definitely a keeper!

Jamaica Inn BY DAPHNE DU MARIER
Jamaica Inn is a true classic. After the death of her mother, Mary Yellan travels to Jamaica Inn on the wild British moors to live with her Aunt Patience. The coachman warns her of the strange happenings there, but Mary is committed to remain at Jamaica Inn. Suddenly, her life is in the hands of strangers: her uncle, Joss Merlyn, whose crude ways repel her; Aunt Patience, who seems mentally unstable and perpetually frightened; and the enigmatic Francis Davey. But most importantly, Mary meets Jem Merlyn, Joss's younger brother, whose kisses make her heart race. Caught up in the danger at this inn of evil repute, Mary must survive murder, mystery, storms, and smugglers before she can build a life with Jem.
Thunder Heights PHYLIS A. WHITNEY
Like Rebecca and Wuthering Heights, this romantic novel of suspense will grip you with its 'almost overwhelming feeling of unending doom' ...
Mistress of Mellyn BY VICTORIA HOLT
Originally published nearly 40 years ago, this gothic classic has been frightening, romancing, and winning fans ever since. Part Jane Eyre, part Rebecca and all good, clean, campy fun, Mistress of Mellyn will keep you tearing through the pages, and looking for copies to lend out to friends.
Our heroine Martha Leigh is a prim and freshly minted governess who has been hired by the remote and demanding Connan TreMellyn to care for his daughter Alvean. As the departure of the three prior governesses suggests, Alvean is a difficult charge, though understandably so since the recent death of her mother, Alice. As Martha tries to connect with Alvean, she researches the history of Mellyn, and discovers hidden family secrets that still haunt the present. Now familiar with Alvean, she feels herself falling for Connan. Though the desire between Martha and Connan grows, Alice's tragic death continues to haunt them both and endanger any future they may have.
A delightful combination of highbrow writing and lowbrow sentiments, Mistress of Mellyn is a guilt-free treat you can indulge in. The romance, suspense, and mystery tromp across the pages with predictable frequency, and there are enough dark looks and dark corridors for any gothic fan

Tregarons Daughter BY MADELELINE BRENT
Her first gothic novel TREGARON'S DAUGHTER is highly suspenseful, completely unpredictable and has the stuff of the best film noir if it were made into a movie. Cadi Tregaron's voyages from a small English fishing village to the luxury of the kindly and well to do Morton family in Kent to the romance and mystery of Venice, Italy keep the reader's mind full of lush visuals and presents characters you like and care about. Excellent reading!!!

Justice Is Done Despite the LawReview Date: 2000-05-26
John Francis Cuddy is Healy's detective. He has lost his wife, but still talks to her in the cemetery. This is a man of many dimensions. I know it sounds weird, but it works.
In this story, Cuddy finds a mystery replete with frame-ups, misdirection, and people exploiting others. He finds a way to unearth the whole sick plot, but then finds that it doesn't work legally. Justice is done anyway.
If you haven't read any of the Cuddy stories by Healy, this is a good one to start with. The best idea though is to read The Staked Goat and Blunt Darts, the first two novels in the series first. I suspect that you will become as addicted to these novels as I am.
