This is a beautiful book by one of the great photographers who shot his dramatic photos right at the frontline of wars. His
years in Paris, his friendship and photos of the giants of European art and cultur reflects the recognition he received from
his contemporaries. His tragic death in Vietnam was a great loss for everyone interested in his art!

Frank Capa (born Endre Friedmann in 1913) was known as the 'Greatest War-Photographer in the World" when he died in 1954.
As a teen, he planned a career as a reporter. Journalsim, he thought, would enable him to combine his loves of politics and
literature. In the spring of 1936, he adopted the name Robert Capa, the name of an alter ego, the imaginary character of
a glamorous American photographer.
He photographed five wars from '36 to '54. The first was the Spanish Civil War. He'd been sent to Madrid to photograph Juan de la Cierva who, in 1923, had invented a forerunner of the helicopter. He stayed on in Spain because he felt an affinity with the warmth, exuberance, and generosity of the Spanish people. He went to Barcelona, (a penpal in the Fifties came from that area, Sabadell, and was a mill worker who learned his English from American sailors and Frank Sinatra records.), Andalucia, and Cordoba.
General Francisco Franco launched a civil war in July, 1936, which changed Spain forever. He had the courage of his convictions and his photos show a compassionate study of people under extreme stress. He was a photographer of people, which is the opposite of me, as I choose buildings, things, birs, animals, historic places and such for my amateur picture taking.
Unlike his friend Ernest Hemingway, he never felt he had to prove his courage to himself or to anyone else. He was intent on making better pictures, at great risk to his safety. Unlike Hemingway, he was very much a gentleman of the old school, coming from Europe, and "gentlemen don't brag." He believed that one shouldn't tempt fate by bragging.
On the battlefields of Spain, he learned that soldiers use theri terrible weapons of mass destruction only because they have been brainwashed into the ability to 'conceptualize' their victims not as individuals but as a category -- the 'enemy.'
He died in Indochina when he stepped on aa nati-personnel land mine. He was buried by his mother in a Quaker cemetery instead of Arlington National Cemetery, which was an offer she refused.

This book has some really amazing photography, they have a really powerful message. I like photos that make me feel something
and Robert Capa's photos difinatly do that. Robert Capa was in the right place and the right time with alot of his photos.
The only thing the book lacked i feel is more background on the photos.

Alan Brinkley has put together a wonderfully readable, balanced, and thorough history of the US, in just under a thousand
pages. It would be ideal for college introductory classes (or very sophisticated high school students); particularly welcome
are the selections from primary sources ("American Voices") that often represent other-than-white-male views, but include
William Bradford on landing at Plymouth and Nixon on China, and the dozen or so segments called "Debating the Past" that review
the differing perspectives historians have taken on such topics as slavery, populism, and Viet Nam. I have been a teacher
for a quarter of a century, and this is the book I wish I'd had all that time

I am not a student & don't buy books because I have to but rather because I enjoy history. Textbooks are sold to a captive
audience & lack the finesse or detail to compete for a general audience. This book covers a wide range of subjects but without
great detail in each (necessarily perhaps) & offers a perhaps more liberal view of US events than I believe is entirely accurate.
I only evaulated the Colonial/Revolutionary periods and the Civil War before deciding to return it for a refund of my $.
Perhaps this is the best out there but I certainly hope not! Really great historical authors (Paul Kennedy, B. Tuckman, etc.)
include a wealth of detail that makes the history come alive. In comparison textbooks such as this one skip detail for a mere
listing of events & dates with the author's interpretations, so students can easily highlight the appropriate sections in
preparing for exams. Don't buy it unless required for a class!

I enjoy this game very much, but the reason I marked it 4 stars is because it's quite long, and near the end, it can get a
little bit boring. I marked the Education 2 because even though the AG characters come from history, the game doesn't.To win,
you must go home with 25 points (which you earn by answering the trivia cards right, Q# 1 gives you one point and etc. up
to 3.) and at least three matches, which you can make with the trade cards you draw at every turn. You roll 2 dice to go through
the game.
A must have for the American girl fan!

Consequently, it was not as useful to me in doing a presentation on annuals!

includes his own personal insights into each plant. Unlike other references that are boring and dry, Armitage makes the material
spring to life!
The line drawings in this book are spectacular as well, and the middle of the book includes several pages of full-color photographs. Very professional and highly recommended.

The book is broken down into categories. I found this helpful. All areas are well-documented, with resources cited. A direct
biblical quote is fully explained and then related to what's going on around us. Although some of the matter is frightening
and disheartening, there is a message of hope. The "doom and gloom" comes from realizing the truth in what's said, and
calls for the reader to acknowledge this truth. Once you understand the messages conveyed, your conscience demands action.
Biblically correct, and with an uplifting message despite the harsh realities.

This was a required text for college level MIS class. The book was well layed out with lots of graphics and interesting facts.
Learning objectives outline each section, making the text easy to digest. Several case studies at the end of each chapter
encouraged me to exercise the concepts I learned in the corresponding chapter. The online content for this book is good, containing
practice quizes for each chapter as well as slide presentations. I did not purchase the iPod content, but imagine it would
be as well presented as the other material. Great book for students.

This is a great book, written by the late Lewis Thomas, who cared deeply about living things on this planet and their future.
It's beautifully written, and I found practically every sentence a pleasure to read. I may be a touch biased, however, due
to my fascination with biology. In a sense, the book is centered around the author's expertise in basic biology, and topics
such as the threat of large scale nuclear war extend from this knowledge base. Fifteen years after its publication the book
is not dated at all, as its message that humans must behave more prudently and compassionately, toward one another and toward
the earth itself, to avoid extinction, is obviously still very much relevant today. Author of Adjust Your Brain: A Practical
Theory for Maximizing Mental Health.

In my opinion, Lewis Thomas is the best there is at describing the wonder and beauty of biology. His first book, "The Lives
of a Cell" , set the standard against which all other popular writers in biology should be measured. The elegant simplicity
of his descriptions of how organisms interact remain as interesting and valid today as when "Lives .. " was first published
in 1974. I recently re-read it and found it just as interesting now as I did the first time.
That description also holds for this book, with Thomas once again waxing eloquent, particularly about the absurdity of "limited" nuclear war. His story about the development of Hawaiian Creole is also particularly thought-provoking. The islands were opened up for sugar plantations after 1880 and there was an enormous influx of laborers from many different language backgrounds. They came from China, Japan, Korea, Puerto Rico and the United States and none of these groups could understand any of the others. However, a pidgin language rapidly developed among the children of all groups. This hybrid language was almost completely unintelligible to the adults. Thomas uses this to argue his point that language originated among the children of early humans. The point is highly plausible, as only the minds of children seem to possess the necessary malleability to learn languages quickly.
While I found the book interesting, it is not the page-turning classic that "Lives . . " is. The problem is that so much of this material already appeared in that book. This is unfortunate, for when Thomas is original he is so engaging a writer. Given the ongoing advances in biology, there certainly is no lack of material to write about.

Thomas's collection of essays on life, the universe and pretty darn much everything is suprisingly readable. He puts his
theories into poetic prose and makes valid scientific points available in laymen's terms. More than a scientific paper,
though, this is a deep peice of philosophy and offers much insight to the human soul. Definately worth reading!

Since the problems in the main book are composed in pairs and this manual answers to one of the pair with abundance of details,
it is a safe approach to solve all the problems in the book. Ideally you must understand the basics of the chapter you're
on, well if not; this magic bullet will be another pain in the neck and a waist of your money and time. If you want to help
yourself to solve and understand all the homework then get this book, consider that normally the main book is used in two
courses so this one won't be an only once used book.

A History Of Contemporary Italy: Society And Politics 1943-1988 by Paul Ginsborg (Professor of Contemporary European History,
University of Florence) is an in-depth survey of Italy's social and political dynamics that saw it evolve from a war-torn
and poverty-stricken, primarily agrarian country, into a prosperous, politically stable member of the European community.
Here ably and accessibly recounted are the events, personalities, and reforms that were critical to eventually overcoming
endemic and persistence corruptions, shortages, and obstacles necessary before the tremendous achievements of contemporary
Italy and its eventual entrance into the European Union. A History Of Contemporary Italy: Society And Politics 1943-1988 is
a scholarly, meticulous history and a welcome and recommended contribution to European International Studies and 20th Century
Italian History reference collections and reading lists.

As good as the critics say-- well-written, based on very extensive Italian sources. But written from a far-Left perspective.
Ginsborg wants to see Italian capitalism destroyed but he doesn't tell us how this is to occur -- presumably not through the
ballot box-- and he doesn't tell us what will be put in its place. This permits him to criticize everything and be held responsible
for nothing.
