I have always been facinated with etchings as a form of art and I have been searching for a comprehensive book on the etchings of Wenceslaus Hollar, one of the most talented etchers of the time... perhaps ever. However, when I read the description of the book it was always missing the section on how many illustrations are in the book. I suppose I should have been keyed in by the title... which says "A descriptive Catalogue..."... but I could not imagine it was possible that an art book could exist with no illustrations. So I ordered it... and lo and behold... it is in fact an art book with zero (0) illustrations. Only descriptive text of each of his 2700 works. While I imagine it is important to have such a catalogue for his works, I can not understand who the target audience for this book would be... except perhaps the holder of the collection of the actual art. A book on art, without the actual art, is not interesting to me.

On the surface

This book just covers the surface of information for 70-291. There are obvious errors in the book. This is the same book as a book listed on Amazon "Insidescoop..." that cost double the cost of this book. But Insidescoop is suppose to come with a CD. All the other 70-291 books are better. The Trainning kit from Microsoft is the best.

The Fine-Arts Etchings of James David Smillie by Brucia Witthoft

This is a scholarly and complete summary of J.D. Smillie's etchings, including some unfinished or unlocated plates. Based on the artist's autobiography, we can be quite sure that this catalogue of his fine art etchings is complete. His engravings, however are not included, but cataloging them might prove be an insurmountable task. Witthoft has also written a good overall biography of Smillie's life. Unfortunately the quality of the printing and print reproductions is rather poor.

Good animal board book for young children
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1998-08-31
This well illustrated board book is great for first readers as well as non readers. My 16 month old can't get enough of the "teddies". It is a very simple book that shows a mother grizzly bear with her two cubs eating and playing. There are only 5 double page sets, a very basic introduction into the lives of a wild animal. Its just the right tone and speed to introduce nature to the very young.

Not for cross stich

This book is simple to read with big color charts. However it is not really suited for cross stich, it would be much more helpful to those interested in beading ect. If you want to do Indain cross stich please look for another book.

The book give a fare look at the printing industry, with many illustrated ex. from the past and the future. The technical side is problamatic due to its complexity, it very hard to make something from the writer experimental way of working with the screen (not allways according to the plan or original sketch.) enjoy.

An ok book, by an ok photographer

Russel's documentary work of this great conductor is only ok. His large format panoramic photography is much more interesting. Unfortunately these photographs have yet to be published in book form.

some good suggestions,but sparse,overpriced

I was so excited to get this book in the mail..but at first I thought maybe they forgot to put it in the package...I kept shaking it,and was about to send it right back,,but I decided to open it up...it is paper thin,an really just lists activities, with some small commentary by cathy malchiodi...
I find some of the ideas interesting---but this book could be just an addendum at the end of an art therapy book..that is the way some art therapy books are written...

As a 3rd year undergraduate studying composition, I cracked open this book, only to find jibberish. As soon as you begin it jumps into a language hierarchical graphic analysis. Maybe I didn't give the book a chance, but I think this book has a very steep learning curve, and assumes lots of background in analysis. Why can't they teach advanced analysis in undergraduate programs?
