The 3rd and final volume in this series devoted to muscial works called sonatas

In the original plan for Newman's monumental testament to the instrumental forms called sonatas, the material in this third
and final volume was supposed to be two separate volumes. I am glad there is only one big book covering this material. The
more concision the better, I say.
Beethoven was such a monumental force in music (he has lost some luster in recent decades, but I believe he will get his momentum back) that all composers after him had to reckon with what he had accomplished in music. It is fitting that his name is in the title.
As you read this book you will read about sonatas that are actually modeled on the forms Beethoven and his near contemporaries used, forms that are actually rejections or transformations of the Classic sonata (and sonata-form), and pieces that seem to be completely new and foreign to anything like the Classic sonata except that they are instrumental works (and not always that). So, basically you get everything including the kitchen sink.
Again, I view this work and its siblings as reference books. They are valuable for looking up composers, works, and periods because Newman puts EVERYTHING in here. Well, not everything. To give you an idea of the strange balance sometimes exhibited, Edward MacDowell's four sonatas (does anyone play them anymore?) get several pages while the much more important Stravinsky is mentioned only in passing. The index for Stravinsky is also wrong and has him mentioned on a page that doesn't mention him. I found him in a parenthesis on page 719, but could find nothing on his piano sonata.
Anyway, it is a useful reference for looking up details that most others have long since forgotten and it can send you to other places to find more material.

It makes so much sense, I wondered why I hadn't thought of it all myself !
I also liked the print and the layout of the book.

I've done an semi instructer led classroom training, where I recieved the Microsoft official Course book (MOC) aswell. I used
this book to lookup the subjects that weren't covered in the MOC book like load ballancing and clustering.
Also after the training with the MOC was finished I used this book to read up about the subjects I failed in the test exams, because this book has a different way of explaning things.
After 8 weeks I passed this exam, without much hands-on experience. This exam also completed my MCSA 2003: Messaging and MCSE 2003 training.

I was kind of surprised by all the bad reviews. I think this book is very helpful to music theory students for the basic essentials
of music. Of course there is more to music than tonal harmony and that's where one's own creative mind comes in, not an author's.
I've been affiliated with several other theory books and this one by far is the most organized, understandable, and useful. The book is divided into sections based on broad categories, new terms are described in detail, several visual and audio examples are given, and there are several self-tests to test out the new knowledge.
I definitely recommend this book to any music major or to anybody who just loves music. :)

Reading the views of other Amazon users shows me that my feelings are similar to others. This is certainly not the worst book
out there, but it is also not the best (or even nearly so). The assumption is that the student is also taking private lessons,
music history, piano proficiency readiness (if piano is not the primary instrument), and playing in ensembles at the same
time. Maybe there are additional classes intended in such areas as ear-training, sight-singing, counterpoint and form and
analysis. And Jazz is an entirely different subject in itself.
I picked it up (as I do many of my books) at a used bookstore near the local university, in order to keep up with my music education over the summer before transferring from a 2-year school to a 4-year university. For that purpose, the book has been helpful.
However, it does make very rapid progress, without much explanation of variations and concepts. It's almost as if the author is expecting that the student simply needs to refresh. So why is this used as a standard textbook for new music students? I cannot tell you!
A better bet, in my opinion, is the Benward set of books (Music in Theory and Practice, Volume 1 with Audio CD Music in Theory and Practice, Volume 2 with Audio CD) and the workbooks that are sold with. I have not gone through this most recent edition, but assume that it is similar to the previous. Benward makes some errors, and it is important that an instructor helps to explain the more difficult areas, but it is clear, and thorough.

This is an excellent introduction, covering most aspects of theory thoroughly. It is also MUCH easier to read than Walter
Piston's Harmony. The problem is that this book is much more abstract than piston's book, breezes over inversions of chords
much too quickly and is a tad lax in the rules of voice leading. I do suggest you consider that text as well.
It's still a good introduction that you will ACTUALLY READ. It covers all triads, seventh chords, chord functions, chromatically altered chords like Neapolitan and Augmented sixth chords, covers non-harmonic tones, and even goes off onto other (more abstract) topics.
As to the reviewer below who pointed out that it neglects counterpoint and focuses too much on the vertical aspect of music (for example, in the exercises EVER note is a different chord and almost no non-harmonic tones are employed): this is an ELEMENTARY HARMONY text. Counterpoint is generally approached after the student has mastered all that is contained in this book. The exercises are meant to teach voice leading and chord functions. Fux's treatise on Counterpoint from Gradus Ad Parnassum clearly states that what is learned in the "first part" on Harmony still applies in writing counterpoint. The horizontal aspect of music can be taught better if the the vertical aspect is understood first. Multiple times Fux also says that exercises, whether those in the book on counterpoint or those in this text, are designed to instruct and make future writing of music easier, but aren't the same as writing music.

You combine it with other methods of study. DO THE LABS- if anything, do the labs in this book as well as the MS Press book.
The labs aren't as technical as the MS Press book but nonetheless will definitely help you in remembering steps to take when
working with permissions, RAID settings, and so on. I used 3 books for my studies, and felt I got an overall well rounded
foundation for taking my exam. I'd suggest NOT using just one book, MS Press is pretty technical, this book lays it out in
more easier to understand terms.

Before you do anything, make sure you are looking at the 2nd Edition of this book. If the top of the book does not say "Updated
For Windows Server 2003 R2", then this review will probably not be helpful.
I should probably tell a little about my background. I earned an A.A.S. in Computer and Information Science early in 2005 and I have spent the last year working as a junior administrator for a small company. We have a mix of Windows XP clients and Windows 2000 servers. In addition to passing this test this morning and the Windows XP in March, I also have a couple of CompTIA certifications.
I found the book to be an excellent study tool. They chapters do a pretty good job of explaining all of the topics. The practice tests were pretty good as well. Some of the questions were a little too simple while others were very similiar to what was on the real exam.
I gave the book 4 stars because while I couldn't have passed the test without it, there were topics on the test that were not covered in the book. There was also a question on one of the included practice exams that was programmed incorrectly; it marked the correct answer as wrong. I would recommend to anyone about to take to test to use this book as a guide, but I would also set up a test server and do the exercises on a real machine. That's really the only way you can practice for the simulation questions.

Sybex books are usually my favourite books for the exam.
The book is easy to understand and to read. It contains useful tips and tries to cover most of the topics required.
For this exam, my favourite book is the Syngress book, but after that it is the Sybex book. This book is the best book for the SUS chapter. It has great information for IIS, terminal services and printers.
Unfortunately the questions included are different than the exam.
I recommend to use practice tests like transcender or boson.
It is a really hard exam, if you want to learn and not to pass the exam, this book is recommended.
I recommend this book for beginners and as a reference book.
Experienced users will find some important tips on the book.

I bought the 3 pack of books. I knew each book inside and out, could ace their practice exams. These are NOT good certification
books. Most of the questions on the exam are not covered in these books. Maybe it is deliberate that Microsoft wants experience
to be how you know the answers because you certainly will be ill prepared if you rely on the contents of these Microsoft Press
books to test how prepared you are. I did pass 528 and 536 and I'd say maybe 5 or 6 questions between the two books were
related to the reading material and the rest were just things I already knew. The 528 book was probably the best of the 3
with 537 being pretty weak and 547 being horribly inadequate.
This books are very good.

These books are great ! with the books themselves, i don't think I would say much about them, coz other reviews already cover
most of my opinion.
but i have to say the SHIPPING and handling from Amazon this time is very POOR! when I received these books, one of the book (70-547) was throughly Wet, moldy and Bended. tried to contact Amazon, but no reply....

I am an experienced developer, and used this set to pass the MCPD Web. It should be all anyone really needs.
Everyone is different, by my recommendation is to use the books only for reference. Take the tests on the disk. Then for the questions you get wrong or find yourself guessing - look up the topic. Study for your weaknesses, otherwise anyone with experience working with this stuff is going to be rehashing everything they already know.
I read people complain about how the books don't cover everything, and am at a loss to know what they could be talking about. If you know everything contained in the books or even possess about 85% of that knowledge, then there really is no way you can fail the tests.

Hey, you may not be going to go take the tests, but at the least find some time (if you can) and read these books.
I am currently trying to find time to get through these books. While I know a fairly good amount of concepts, I want to be polished and complete to make my job much easier and increase my free time at home because of that. That leads to why you would want to read these books.
These books explain things in a very straight forward manor. They at least in my opinion, side-step any jibberish and tell you the basic "why" for a lot of things. I feel that the author did a pretty decent job covering the subject in each book.
Also, if you notice that most programming books typically use a smaller font, or just so much information or so much bold or what not, that your mind is just trying to process the formatting of one page. What I like about this book is Space. There is larger text and space. Makes you really focus in and read carefully page by page.
Anyway, definitely decent books in my opinion here.
