A Must-See for Pianists of all LevelsReview Date: 2000-04-19

Wonderful, readable 2 volume biography of a fascinating man.Review Date: 2001-05-24
Both volumes can be bought separately, but together come in a handsome slipcase.
I have read many biographies of famous conductors, and this ranks alongside Richard Osborne's book on Herbert von Karajan, and (best of all) Michael Kennedy's masterly and moving 'Barbirolli, Conductor Laureate', which I fear may be out of print.

Outstanding contributionReview Date: 2007-08-08
Levine deftly juxtaposes ideas from Freud, Winnicott and Heidegger in the first half of the book to weave a compelling argument for how the imagination effects healing and integration in art therapy. The rest of the book is just as interesting and thought provoking. Highly recommended.

Nice Book, if a Bit OutdatedReview Date: 2003-08-29
It outlines a brief (i.e. a few paragraphs) history of pattern making. Then it outlines all the tools (oak tag, pattern paper, french curves, hip curves etc.) of pattern making and how those tools are used. Next the book discusses darts, gathers and other ways to fit and add fullness to garments. After these introductions to pattern-making and fitting, MacDonald addresses the basics of EVERY TYPE of garment you will ever want to make! Seriously.
She addresses bodices, variations on bodices, darting for different figures, and then goes on to sleeves (variations on sleeves include cowl, raglan, kimono, lantern, leg o mutton and more!). She addresses variations and fitting techniques for the following: bodices, sleeves, necklines, pants, shorts, skirts (every skirt you've ever heard of and some you haven't!), tunics and dresses, collars, cuffs and closures!
While some of the techniques are a little outdated fashion-wise, (lantern sleeves and sweet-heart necklines - yuck!) the important thing is that it teaches you how to make EVERYTHING which is great experience nonetheless. And once you're familiar with pattern making for the various pieces - you can use what you've learned to make EXACTLY what you want!
This is, in short, a very thorough and clear book.

"The Ragas of North India" Walter A. Kaufmann Review Date: 2006-01-16
Many of the examples are from performances transcribed by the author during his 14 year tenure as a director of All India Radio. Kaufmann brings an insight and understanding of ICM to bear on a subject usually misinterpreted or biased by Orientalist who seek to conform the musical science of the subcontinent to Western ideals of the theory and practice of music. Kaufmann is the rare individual who approachs ethnomusicology as a true initiate of the form he is studying.
The author gives concise footnotes and sources primarely from Hindu texts but also references Alain Danilou's excellent study of N. Indian music which is confusingly published under the same title and pre dated the Kaufmann text.
I highly recommend this book to any and all persons seeking a well written, well researched book on the subject. Sadly the book is out of print and has been offered for sale at princely sums exceeding US $400.00. I have owned 2 copies prior to the copy currently in my possession and the price has doubled and tripled every time I have replaced it. If you find one buy it you will be richly rewarded. Reviewers update 15/01/06: A search of Amazon.UK shows available copies of this book for as low as US $51.00 If you have an interest buy it now, its out of print and turns up rarely at this low price. Not a plug folks, just a suggestion.
