Featuring full-color photographs of 103 original quilts, all drawn from the Nebraska Quilt Project survey, Nebraska Quilts & Quiltmakers by Patricia Cox Crews (Professor of Textiles, Clothing, And Design, University of Nebraska-Lincoln) and Ronald C. Naugle (Professor of History, Nebraska Wesleyan University) is a dazzling 245-page showcase of great quilts ranging from the 1800's to the modern day, and from stylized repeating decorations, to applique patchworks, to stunning art visions crafted from needlecrafted fabric. Accompanying each presented quilt is a brief biography of its quiltmaker and a history of the quilt, such as one of a pioneer woman who struggled to protect her children and keep them alive under harsh conditions. Nebraska Quilts & Quiltmakers is a very highly recommended and inspirational resource for dedicated quilters of all levels experience and expertise.

Ornamental tinwork from the mid-1800s began in Santa Fe, New Mexico with a sardine can and worked its way into other applications: so begin Lane Coulter and Maurice Dixon Jr. in their history of the tools, techniques and products of New Mexican tinwork. Relatively little has been documented in this area, making New Mexican Tinwork 1840-1940 a compilation of history and color photos of particular interest to anyone working in this particular medium.

A Must-See for Pianists of all Levels
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-19
Nokleberg's book Onstage with Grieg is an excellent reference source for pianists of all levels and abilities. It is the only book of its kind which focuses only on the piano works of Edvard Grieg. Nokleberg who has recorded all of Griegs piano pieces, has provided us here with his ideas on proper interpretation. He draws not only from his personal experience, but from many sources of reference, namely Griegs letters and original prints. By using these sources along with his own ideas the amateur and even professional performer will have a clear and accurate view of the composers true intentions. As he states in the preface, this book is not intended to be read cover to cover, but rather to be used as a guide for whichever piece the pianist is currently attempting to learn. His analysis covers every piano work equally from both an interprative and technical point of view. This book is great for any pianist ready to delve into the wonderful world of Edvard Grieg -- and even better you are assured to be doing the composer justice by using Noklebergs helpful hints!

Wonderful, readable 2 volume biography of a fascinating man.

If you have an interest in classical music, then the name Otto Klemperer will be well known to you. Here is a beautifully presented two volume biography, very much a labour of love on the part of the author. A great read, and I particularly like having the notes at the foot of the page, not in an appendix.

Both volumes can be bought separately, but together come in a handsome slipcase.

I have read many biographies of famous conductors, and this ranks alongside Richard Osborne's book on Herbert von Karajan, and (best of all) Michael Kennedy's masterly and moving 'Barbirolli, Conductor Laureate', which I fear may be out of print.

...valuable launching tool for therapists...
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 1998-06-20
This book beautifully facilitates the introduction of themes, into practice, that capture the emotional energy of a client in play. The book clearly provides a structure for the therapist to help the individual with the opening and closing of their emotional and psychological boundaries. In general, the techniques illustrate how the therapist is able to help the client more easily access the underlying boundary process and accept directed inputs, their way, that will help them transform poorly developed internal structures, (i.e. family of origin tapes), into healthier ones, (e.g. long held anger can be transformed into present day assertiveness). Overall, this book is a valuable launching tool for therapists considering Play Therapy as an intervention.

Words that Heal - Poetry Therapy

Though accessible to the general public, this book is intended for the student and practitioner of the healing arts. It is a fine introduction to the field by one of its grand masters. I "found" it while looking for help in running poetry workshops with teens - and earmarked so many pages for special note that it made more sense to buy the book.

This superb little book is invaluable if you are looking for a deeper understanding of art therapy and how it works.

Levine deftly juxtaposes ideas from Freud, Winnicott and Heidegger in the first half of the book to weave a compelling argument for how the imagination effects healing and integration in art therapy. The rest of the book is just as interesting and thought provoking. Highly recommended.

Nice Book, if a Bit Outdated
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-29
This book is really nice, very informative, laid-out well and its information is very clear and fairly easy to follow. While it's a textbook, and therefore its primary audience is students of design, a skilled sewer will find this book to be very helpful nontheless. It's definitely for the beginner pattern-maker, and that's why it's successful not only as a text book but as a simple instruction book as well.

It outlines a brief (i.e. a few paragraphs) history of pattern making. Then it outlines all the tools (oak tag, pattern paper, french curves, hip curves etc.) of pattern making and how those tools are used. Next the book discusses darts, gathers and other ways to fit and add fullness to garments. After these introductions to pattern-making and fitting, MacDonald addresses the basics of EVERY TYPE of garment you will ever want to make! Seriously.

She addresses bodices, variations on bodices, darting for different figures, and then goes on to sleeves (variations on sleeves include cowl, raglan, kimono, lantern, leg o mutton and more!). She addresses variations and fitting techniques for the following: bodices, sleeves, necklines, pants, shorts, skirts (every skirt you've ever heard of and some you haven't!), tunics and dresses, collars, cuffs and closures!

While some of the techniques are a little outdated fashion-wise, (lantern sleeves and sweet-heart necklines - yuck!) the important thing is that it teaches you how to make EVERYTHING which is great experience nonetheless. And once you're familiar with pattern making for the various pieces - you can use what you've learned to make EXACTLY what you want!

This is, in short, a very thorough and clear book.

Regarding the book "The Ragas of North India" by Walter A. Kaufmann ISBN: 0306761696. I have used this book as a reference text for 20 years. For a serious student or scholar of the Hindusthani music of N.India unfamilier with Bhaktandis' notation this book is an invaluable resource containing chapters on the history, philosophy and practice of ICM,Indian classical music. The fundamentals are covered in detail and are supplemented with hundreds of examples of Indian Ragas based on the 10 major scales of Hindusthani music, used in folk, contemporary and art music from the earliest historical examples up to post independance India. This book has also been a great help in collaborations of my own with Western musicians allowing easily accessible western notation of the most commonly performed ragas as well as rare transcription of obscure or regional ragas.
Many of the examples are from performances transcribed by the author during his 14 year tenure as a director of All India Radio. Kaufmann brings an insight and understanding of ICM to bear on a subject usually misinterpreted or biased by Orientalist who seek to conform the musical science of the subcontinent to Western ideals of the theory and practice of music. Kaufmann is the rare individual who approachs ethnomusicology as a true initiate of the form he is studying.
The author gives concise footnotes and sources primarely from Hindu texts but also references Alain Danilou's excellent study of N. Indian music which is confusingly published under the same title and pre dated the Kaufmann text.
I highly recommend this book to any and all persons seeking a well written, well researched book on the subject. Sadly the book is out of print and has been offered for sale at princely sums exceeding US $400.00. I have owned 2 copies prior to the copy currently in my possession and the price has doubled and tripled every time I have replaced it. If you find one buy it you will be richly rewarded. Reviewers update 15/01/06: A search of Amazon.UK shows available copies of this book for as low as US $51.00 If you have an interest buy it now, its out of print and turns up rarely at this low price. Not a plug folks, just a suggestion.
