This book reviews the role of expressive arts in grief work
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1999-08-01
"Grief and the Healing Arts: Creativity as Therapy" is one of the most significant books I have ever read as a creative arts therapist. Professionals who use the arts in their grief work with clients, and individuals who have used the arts to come to terms with their own grief are represented. Poignant photagraphs underscore the articles. The editor, Sandra Bertman, PhD,is an expert in thanatology. She is Professor of Humanities in Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. Bertman brings both a strong theoretical base and a respect for the anecdotal to her choices of articles for this book. I strongly recommend it!

A unique piece of work !

Laura Seftel did a tremendous job, writing this unique piece of work about people who experience pregnancy loss. Pregnancy loss often means an invisible loss, because we tend to keep early pregnancy a secret. People can easily remain silent about it because many of us are afraid to grieve and the people around us encourage us to move on. Also it is important to acknowledge that it is a real loss, is Laura's message. So for every loss, we need a healing process. We need to express our feelings and emotions and this takes a lot of time. This unseen grief has no shape, but Laura encourages us to develop personal forms of expression through the arts. By writing, making art and creating rituals we can materialize this loss and share it with others. In "Grief Unseen" we can find many examples of personal stories and all kinds of expression, of rituals and how we can get healed from this painful loss. There are many illustrations in the book by different artists, which makes it attractive and easy to read.
I can highly recommend this book for both people who experienced pregnancy loss and people who have loved ones who experienced it and want to become informed.

Beautifully illustrated book with very clear instructions, unfussy designs that are simple and attractive. The opposite of those folksy cluttered patterns. Something that you can come back to as a reference source for other types of handwork.

Excellent Introduction to Psychoanalytic Use of Art Therapy
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.

I am an undergraduate majoring in Expressive Arts therapy, and found this book to be invaluable to my studies. Naumberg's case histories and evaluations lend an intimate, 'blow by blow' depiction of the way making art aids the communication and healing of her patients, most of whom were under 13 years old. Many other texts deal rather abstractly with the subject, as if one has already been practicing; Naumberg writes of concrete actions and results, with very little intervening (even though Freudian) interpretation. A must-have for anyone intending to embark in the profession of art therapist.

My first (and probably only) music therapy course used this book as it's text. I am a musician, so I'm coming from that perspective. However, there is surprisingly little information on here as far as music skills. The assumption is that those skills are developed outside of this particular class.

The author gets into the specifics of a wide range of disabilities, disorders and conditions. The way the brain processed music is presented in a thorough, yet (relatively) simplistic way. It's a detailed study, and not just a bunch of fun facts, so you have to be ready to take the time to research.

The questions at the end of the chapters provided an excellent review for each class, and the book was well organized. I would certainly recommend both the book, as well as a Music Therapy class to anyone with any interest.
