A powerful pictorial history of buildingReview Date: 2008-10-19
This is the first time I have seen an Usborne Beginner's Knowledge book and I cannot praise it enough!! It will stimulate brain cells through the visual bThis book is "the story of building from the first Stone Age hut to the skyscrapers of today." This is simply a magnificent presentation. For example: the time line of buildings begins with the Roman Colosseum and ends with the Empire State Building. What is special is that they are placed next to each other as if built that way. What we see then is edifaces juxtaposed for size comparison. Nothing could be clearer.
How were early houses built? How was Stonehenge built? Colorful illustrations detail the answers, plus providing a running commentary of On down through historical importance: the Pyramids, the Parthenon, the Colosseum, Fortress Castles, Cathedrals, Himeji Castle in Japan, Neuschwanstein Castle, St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, a mosque, Versailles Palace, St. Basil's Cathedral In Moscow, the U.S. Capitol, the Eiffel Tower, and numerous others.
The book concludes with Unusual Buildings, including Sydney's Opera House, the House of Bones in Barcelona, Spain, and a space-age, cubical-based apartment building. On the next two pages is another time line, this time with individual illustrations of the buildings to show architectural design and detail. Two more pages give us the glossary, and lastly, the index.
I found these two additional books available through Amazon sellers:
Ships, Sailors and the Sea (Usborne Beginner's Knowledge)
Railways and Trains (Usborne Beginner's Knowledge)

What do crocodiles eat?Review Date: 2007-03-12
This story is a neat variation on one of my favorite "Just So Stories", "The Elephant's child". It about a too curious elephant. You may want to also look at other versions of Kipling's tale. Now it is a little archaic so do not let your nose bet bent out of shape.

Perfect for kids of all ages!Review Date: 2003-09-23
I used this book to learn about the BASIC language and programming basics as an adult. Perfect for computer science students or for kids who want to understand programming.

OUTSTANDING !!!!!Review Date: 2002-07-10
The book covers the period of 1450-1750 and explores art and learning; science and invention; new religious ideas; war and weapons.
Other topics are the Incas; the discovery of America; the Muslim empires; the Habsburgs; the Elizabethans; European settlers in North America; plantations and trading forts, the Mogul empire; life in Japan; merchants and trade; and lastly, kings and parliaments.
Each topic is simply but thoroughly presented for this age group. The book provides a springboard for further learning about this period of history. A book like this will never be out of style for avid learners and for those whose interest in learning you want to encourage or increase.
Even adults will learn from it!

Best in the series!Review Date: 2007-10-01
The best thing about this, as well as the Great Search books, is that kids "accidentally" learn while searching for the hidden pictures. My daughter has learned a few interesting things about other cultures from this book. Other books in the series present factoids about history, animals, habitats, etc. which promote curiosity and thoughtful questions. Nice "busy work" for home-schoolers or other bright kids.
Happy hunting!
