This is the best of the best for new and old parents. I didn't read this until my 3rd and still found out all kinds of new things. The book is well thought out and planned. Easy to understand but most of all PRACTICAL. The ideas presented in this book don't require you to have a PH.D to apply. Nor does it require a six digit income to supply the items suggested for use. The women who wrote this book are obviously mothers. Which doesn't seem to be a requirement anymore for giving advice. (ha ha).

found it at a library, now planning on buying it

I got this book a week ago at the local library (an older copy, probably from the first printing) and thought I'd check it out. I figured that if it gave me ANY ideas on stuff to do with my 3 year old, 2 year old, and 2 month old during this rainy weather we are having that it would be a good choice. So I got it home and read through it, and I LOVE this book! I've used several things in it for my 3 year old and my 2 year old, and found that there's a lot of stuff in the 2 sections that line up really well for the different ages. I'm not too creaative when it rains too much so this book has come in very handy, and its given me ideas that I may not have come up with at all if I hadn't checked the book out from the library. After 2 days of referencing this book I told my husband that I was buying it as soon as I could find a copy of it. He agreed with me after looking through it himself. I am very impressed with this book and am suggesting it to everyone I know with little kids, its already becoming a lifesaver and I dread taking it back to the library if I don't have my own copy beforehand.

This book helps children understand the facts of life as well as how their bodies change as they go through puberty. The pictures are drawn very realistically. There is a good mixture of text and pictures which help hold a child's attention. Unlike other books on this subject, this one is less embarassing and encourages parent-child discussions. Both my children have used this book until the book has become nearly worn out. I give it as a gift to other parents whose children are entering puberty.

Great book!

I purchased this book for my three sons and was very impressed with it. It covered EVERYTHING! The information is explained in a manner that is easy to understand. Having sons I wanted them to understand not only what was happenning to their bodies but to the girls as well. This book is great! I loved it so much I purchased it for several other children too. I work at a bookstore and recommend it to parents who are looking for "facts of life" reference books for their children.

I remember this from my childhood! It's full of great predictions about the future, about how we're all going to be living in bubbles on the moon by the year 2000, etc. Some of it was quite prescient, e.g. there's stuff about pollution, environmentalism, camcorders and satellite TV. Other stuff, like cylindrical space cities, was perhaps a bit overoptimistic. Today, it's a great retro read!

Interesting and great illustrations

I read the Chinese version of this book when I was a kid. For a children's book, it's surprisingly insightful. It's also interesting to see how some of the preditions in the book have come true. The illustrations are great too. I find this book pretty inspiring even for an adult and I highly recommend it especially if you like sci-fi.

I just discovered this series of books - and just ordered The Great History Search. It's a fun book that both my 5 and 9 year old girls enjoy - and me too! Each page is a starting point for a discussion on a country/area, with a brief explanation of the different things you search for in each place. Places covered include: USA; Amazon Rainforest; Iceland; Greece; Morocco; Trinidad; The Alps; The Middle East; East Africa; Siberia; China; India; Thailand; Japan and Australia. An added challenge is that you don't progress through the book from front to back. You have to solve another puzzle to find which place you should go to next! Kids wouldn't even realize they were learning they're having such fun!

This book has been a big hit with my 5 y.o. son. He loves Waldo type search books and this book has similar searches, but also incorporates different cultures, new vocabulary, and tidbits of information. This book has been a great starting point for many discussions about other cultures and other countries. I'm looking forward to bringing the History Search book out of our attic soon too.

Five year old boys, with careful hands love playing with the HO size Roman soldiers taking them in and out of the fort. Mom and Dad can put it together with some participation from their child. What a way to stimulate a lasting interest in history.

My four year old son and I really enjoyed this book. There is a simpler text on the top of the page and a wordier one at the bottom. At first the parent read it all and grdually the child will read the simpler text at top. A unique way to step into reading! My little guy especially enjoyed finding the little duck hidden on each page. I also got a sticker book version.

My four year old son and I so enjoyed this bright, happy book. I like the format with the simple sentences on top that the child eventually can read and the wordier text at the bottom for the parent which makes the story interesting. My little guy like the duck hiding on each page. Some took some looking to find much to his delight.

I teach horseback riding year round and in summer camp. This little book is perfect for children. The drawings and explanations are accurate, clear, and easy to understand. While the book pictures children and ponies, adults who are just learning the basics of riding will find it informative and fun to read.

I have coached soccer for 4 years and always had the nagging suspicion that I had no idea of what I was doing. I knew the concepts and I knew the kids but I didn't know how to bring the two together.

This book is great for kids who need something to learn from and it is great for a coach who needs a quick and easy method of bringing a lesson plan together.

Good work!

Have given this book out to U-6 and U-8 teams as an end-of-season "favor." The kids love it. And it teaches the basics in a way that even the most soccer-challenged parent can understand.

The World of the Future (in 1979)

An absolute classic.

I still have copies of all three books and they are still way ahead of their time. The Usborne company came up with a truly ground breaking way to show kids that the future could be exciting and utopian if we just made the right choices, which we of course haven't...

1979: "What happens in the cities of the future depends a lot on what measures are taken to take care of our world, the Earth. Adequate steps must be taken to control pollution and conserve energy until oil replacements are developed and to develop agriculture to feed 6,000 million people."

This is the best book ever made

I won't pick apart all the reasons while the predictions and illustrations have not happened the way described within this great utopian kids book. I think that reading this in elementary school in the 80's made me excited then as now. I don't care personally if I ever live in such a place, but it's great to see such amazing innovations, this is a different experience, a vacation for the mind, from the real world.
