I loved this one growing up. Really. Amelia Bedelia always choose the funniest possible interpretation of words, and her name rhymes! What's not to love?

The one thing I'd be concerned about is that a lot of the usages in this book are going to be unfamiliar to your young kid. I don't think many of us say "draw the curtains" anymore, and even if we do, we probably don't often talk about "trimming" steak (with or without lace!) or "dressing" chicken, at least, not around our kids. Maybe we should, but we don't.

So this book might be better saved for read-aloud time than read-alone time.

My first grader love that book. He was cracking up and he had so much fun reading this book! He reads it without any help. It is a cute and funny story and if you child doesn't like to read this is a great book to spike an interest in reading.

I remember reading these books years and years ago! I'm in 10th grade and it's been more 5 years since I was in elementary school and yet when I go work at my old school I go back and read them again!

Wonderful 'First reader' Book!

A fun (and funny) book which will delight kids with Amelia's well-intentioned but mistake-laden chores. Kids feel empowered because they are 'smarter' than the character and are able to cheer her on. In the end, Amelia's good deeds overpower any mistakes she makes.

I recommend this book for any child who is beginning to read on their own!

This is surly a kids favorite since I was a little girl! We join Amelia Bedelia as she starts her first day of work for the Rodgers. They rush off shortly after she arrives, but they've left her a list of things to do. Should be a snap, as all the tasks are simple and clearly stated...but that's what you think...Amelia Bedelia begins completing each chore in quite a literal fashion...drawing the drapes and much, much more! Younger kids (1-4) will like the silliness of it and beginner readers and more savvy grade schoolers (5-8) will like that's it's simple and clever/silly too! I recommend it without reservation! I'm sure Amelia will be with us, teaching fine lessons about the words we use and the many means they can have for generations to come!

An Eager Investment of Life's Concluding Chapters

A book of honest reflection on the struggles of growing older set in the context of a Biblical worldview that challenges us to embrace our Creator as we carefully invest our remaining time here on earth, rather than merely existing as we await our finish.

This is a book of rich practical theology. Karen Davis writes from a "full cup" of Biblical study and life experience. You will profit from her insights and instruction.

This book is well organized and interesting to read. It is biblically accurate, presenting concepts and information in a manner that will appeal to and be helpful to all of us who are approaching our older years. If you want to know what the Bible has to say about growing older successfully, this is the book for you.

Dan Burson says:
Having served for four years as Executive Director and Administrator of a Florida retirement community and Assisted Living Facility, I can attest to the profound help and encouragement this book has been for our residents. Our residents ranged in age from 60 to 105. All of them told me they were helped by this Biblical information which Karen Davis has compiled from her own experience of caring for two sets of elderly parents in her home for 11 years.

Some of this book was orginally a lecture she gave at a women's conference. I found the tape so helpful, I had my secretary transcribe it so I could share the nuggets she had mined from scripture with our residents. I am very appreciative to Karen and her publisher, ECS Ministries, for expanding these outstanding insights into book form in order to bless others.

A Stunning Biblical Study of the Aging Process

Review Date: 2007-12-08
I was recently given this book and was pleasantly surprised to find that it was both written well and is biblically sound.

Although none of us enjoy the aging process, Karen Davis is the first author I've encountered who says "Me too!" and then further elaborates by showing us Biblical examples of famous characters who also struggled with aging.

But it doesn't just stop there. Davis also discusses what options we have as we age, and tackles some of the tougher issues such as "What does the Bible indicate about cosmetic surgery?", the aches and pains of an aging body, temptations, and breakdowns in relationships.

Davis discusses Growing Older, Growing Wiser with insight and empathy. This is a must-read for anyone who suddenly realizes that they've reached that age which they thought of as "old" when they were children.

I am a former student of the author, Charlotte Slack. As an Elementary Education major I was surprised to realize that I had never been taught how to teach writing, until I got to Slack's class. I used this book to teach 2nd grade writing and found great sucess in my own teaching as well as the student's writing. This book focusess on teaching the process of writing not simply telling the students to write responses to different prompts. This is a great book to follow if you are not yet confident in your ability of teaching writing!

Classroom-tested Lesson Plans that Teach Children to Write!
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1999-03-29
I am the author, so of course I am giving this book five stars! As an elementary teacher, I found myself totally unprepared to teach my students to write. I had never been taught to write myself. I knew good writing when I saw it, but I was unable to teach children how to do it. So, I began extensive reading and research and attended countless workshops and seminars on writing. Mostly I learned a lot of theory and ways to get kid to write. I could get the kids writing, but they were not writing well. I finally put together a writing program based on what I had learned from research studies and what I knew worked in the classroom. This book, and a second book for older students, are the result. The book is organized in a lesson-plan format, with objectives, materials, focus, and step-by-step guidance on how to teach each lesson. It has been classroom tested, and has proven to be particularly effective in helping students pass state-mandated writing tests. This book is based on the writing process, but takes the process the necessary extra step by filling in what to do during each stage of the process. The writing process is hollow without thorough, specific instructions on how to write along the way. That's what beginning writers need, and that's what this book offers. I frequently give workshops to teachers around the state, and participants always say, "This makes so much sense!" I currently have a contract with Prentice Hall to write a college textbook for elementary education majors on how to teach children to write. In the meantime, this book helps teachers already in the classroom.

An Alternative to the

Dick Swartley draws on over thirty years experience as a tentmaker elder of a church, which grew to an attendance of 2000 adult worshipers, to authoritatively deal with governing a church in a Biblical manner. He experienced hierarchical methods of organizational direction in a large business with governmental customers. And he encountered such methods in the local church where they were characterized by manifestations of "ego, power and privilege - as well as men's timidity, passivity, and acquiescence in responsibility."

A primary value of "Eldership in Action" is its practicality. Dick provides practical guidance for efficient conduct of meetings, determining vision, mission, and strategic planning, delegation, reporting and accountability, communication among leadership and with the congregation, confidentiality, emergency decisions, and terminology which reinforces Biblical truths; and the like.

In dealing with an elder council as a corporate body, "Eldership in Action" is an excellent complement to "Biblical Eldership" by Alexander Strauch, which focuses on the personal attributes and conduct of individual elders. Both books are of value, not only for present elders, but in the training of elder candidates.

Excellent, Practical Guide for Elder-Led Churches!

Our church (a large one) has been moving from a Sr. Pastor model of church leadership to an Elder-Led model. This book has turned out to be a gold mine of practical information for us! From the biblical basis for multiple leadership, to how elders are to function, to how staff and elders relate--this book covers many of those difficult issues an elder-led church must deal with.
I would highly recommend this book whether you are already functioning under an elder-led model, or whether you are reconsidering your current structure. This book challenges the prevailing thinking regarding church leadership, giving us a more biblical alternative to the common Sr. Pastor model.

This is simply the finest commentary on the life of Jonah the Prophet I have ever read. It is a great tool for teachers, preachers, or those participating in family devotionals. The insights are very deep but made easy to understand due to Dr. Hawkine keen insight, knowledge and wisdom of the Holy Scriptures. This is one book you will want to read over and aver again and will never grow old due to it's timeless truths.

Profound insight into Jonah's life and the Christian's.

Historical Defense for Inspired Prophetic Truth

Unfortunately many bible readers miss one of the greatest truths revealed to us by God. The return of His Son is truly worth knowing and a defense for the literal 2nd coming of Christ to a literal Israel is worth noting. Yes Jesus reigns in our hearts but He will also reign on his earth. Ryrie silences the critics with Historical truth. Historical figures, events and early beliefs which can not be altered. All we have to do is look back at History and see how the Spirit of God moved. I praise God for this book. Short but very informative.
