Extraordinary is absolutely correct!
If you have any interest in beautiful birds of any species, I suspect you will like this book. The photography is of the highest quality and Mr. Green-Armytage has a wonderful way of presenting the birds as special characters, not just standard poses. He has done a wonderful job of selecting a wide variety of lovely chickens from both British and American poultry shows. There is just enough text to whet one's interest in the breeds. Unfortunately, the index only has page numbers for the photos. Descriptions of the birds need to be hunted up on your own. But you bought it for the photos of lovely, strange and cute/funny birds.

Lisa and Jenna's Review
This book really gives you a feel of what Chickens are really about and made of! This writter has extrodanary pictures to explain the life of a chicken! We recomend this book to all who love chickens and everything about chickens!

Extraordinary Book of Extraordinary Fowl
An entertaining, well-organized, informative book. A must read for the chicken-lover! Each breed featured is detailed in a short, but informative paragraph close to the photograph of the bird in discussion. Folks who read this book will never look at the "ordinary" chicken in the same light again. They are beautiful creatures who deserve the same recognition and respect as a show canine or show feline. And,the photography is excellent!!

Babar's Museum Note Cards in a Slipcase with Drawer
Published in Cards by Harry N. Abrams (01 September, 2003)
Author: Laurent De Brunhoff
Amazon base price: $12.95
Used price: $9.17

On one of their weekly balloon flights over Celesteville, Babar and Celeste notice that the railroad station is standing empty. Elephants, it seems, now prefer cars over trains. Interestingly, although Babar comments on the roads "jammed with traffic," he and his queen decide to focus on the other issue--the abandoned station. Celeste comes up with an idea to turn it into a museum to house their art collection, and soon an architect is drawing up plans and workers are renovating the building. When the great day of the opening arrives, what a show! The royal couple had acquired some pretty impressive and well known works of art--all featuring elephants, of course. Laurent de Brunhoff outdoes himself with the real-life art-inspired paintings and sculptures, from Mary Cassatt’s "Mother and Child" to Edvard Munch’s "The Scream" to Leonardo da Vinci’s "Mona Lisa." Young art buffs will enjoy the very age-appropriate art appreciation lessons, as the children are encouraged! to say whatever they want about the art: "I like this picture because it’s red," says Arthur about Van Gogh’s "Self-Portrait." When pedantic Cornelius tries to pontificate, Celeste gently hushes him. Includes a free pull-out poster. (Ages 4 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

wonderful
My wife's parents gave this book to my daughter. I was as delighted as she was! I grew up on Babar. What a lovely children's book! My four year old daughter absolutely adores it. Buy this for the children in your life and they will love it.

A delightful visit to Babar's Museum of Art
A balloon ride over Celesteville leads to Babar and Celeste deciding to turn in an abandoned train station into a museum in which they can display their great collection of fine paintings. Everyone in town gets more and more excited waiting for the big day when the museum is opened and everyone can see everything that is hanging on the walls inside. The paintings might be intended for the elephants and other animal friends of Babar and Celeste and this book might be intended for younger readers, but the readers who will most enjoy Laurent De Brunhoff's book are going to be those old enough to appreciate the witty elephant-inspired version of great paintings from Michaelangelo's "Creation of Man" and Sandro Botticelli's "Birth of Venus" to George Surat's "A Sunday on La Grande Jatte" and Edvard Munch's "The Scream." There is just something intrinsically enjoyable about taking Leonardi Da Vinci's "Mona Lisa" and making the lady with enigmatic smile an elephant, and the idea of doing the same thing with Vincent Van Gogh's "Self Portrait" is hysterical since Babar is an African elephant and not an Indian elephant. The more you know about great art the more you will enjoy strolling through the galleries with Babar and his family. The book also includes a pull-out poster of the delightful art found in "Babar's Museum of Art." The adventures of Babar have been delighting children for half a century and this is a charming addition to the series. It should also inspire its young readers to check out the "real" versions of these great paintings so that they can find out what the adults are chuckling about as they enjoy "Babar's Museum of Art." Is it too early to be thinking about books that would be great to give as gifts to young readers for Christmas? This one should be high up on that list.

Wonderful for preschoolers through elementary children!
Some of us remember having "Babar" books read to us when we were children. This book rekindles those warm thoughts while providing an interesting, entertaining look at art and life.

Classic Treatises
Some of the very best from the early years of Fine Woodworking Magazine by some of the Titans of the Seventies. These techniques are as fresh and informative today as they were when they were written.

One of FWW's Best of the "Best Of" Series
40+ reprinted articles from Fine Woodworking magazine by such masters as Tage Frid, Ian Kirby, Mark Duginske, Jim Cummins and many others.

General subject matter includes:

Joinery -- box joint jig, blind finger joints, plate joinery, tapered sliding dovetails, hand dovetails.

Boxes -- bandsawn, box design, bookmatching boards for.

Carcases -- European style cabinets, blanket chests, open, stereo cabinets.

Drawers -- general how-to, bottoms, making your own hardware, miters/tape/glue, panels for lids.

Miscellany -- drawer stop ideas, hanging doors, panel cutting, french fitting.

All in all, this is a well rounded, authoritative and tremendously helpful volume for the advanced amateur cabinetmaker. I have personally used many of the techniques described herein on my own projects with much success and am all the better craftsman for it.

Highly recommended.

A Modern Classic
I saw a production of The Drawer Boy at Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago, Illinois starring John Mahoney (of Frasier fame), Frank Galati, and Johnny Galecki. The script is beautifully crafted, with a subtle and skillful coloring. The simple, truthful insights it provides into friendships with all their complexities are touching. I'd highly recommend this play to read, or better yet, watch.

Wonderful "true family" recipes!
This cookbook has terrific family recipes with ingredients that are likely to be in your cupboard, plus wonderful stories about the generations of "granny's" family. It's as much fun to read as to cook from, and I've tried and liked many of the recipes already!

The Junk-Drawers Corner-Store Front-Porch Blues
I first discovered John R. Powers when a co-worker gave me the Unoriginal Sinner and the Ice God to read. It was so good I wanted to own that book and other books by Mr. Power. I was diappointed to find that all of his books are out of print. My local library had three of his tiles but have found it difficult to locate his works to purchase. I recommed all of John R. Powers books espesially to baby boomers his books will bring back wonderful memories. I would like to know more about the author.

A New Urbanist novel
Architechts and Urban Design folks who consider themselves New Urbanists will love this novel. Powers understands that our missing of the "old neighborhood" is about the sense of place and belonging that was left behind in the search for the suburban dream. Powers tells all the stories: the one mom on the block who worked, the garage which is behind the house, off the alley "where it belongs". Powers lets us recall the calm and orderliness of life in a neighborhood of diverse population, mixed uses(corner stores and front porches) and care for neighbors. The book is a delightful reminder of the days and places that defined middle class not in terms of income or profession but of an ethic shared with the families next door and across the alley.

A Great Book
I think this book is an excellent book and I just love everything that John R. Powers writes. He has a way of being funny and poignant at the same time. He writes about growing up in Chicago as if you are actually doing it yourself. His way of writing draws you in because it is very funny and touching and really makes you think about life. The fact of the matter is that I loaned this book to a friend and now I can't find it in print again. It is truly a good book!

Great Ideas.
Danny Proulx has put together a great book with some really good examples of all types of doors and drawers. I've used some of his ideas in my kitchen remodel.

Fun just to read and dream!
I am a beginning cabinetmaking student, and this semester my course work covers basic case construction. Because I hope to design a built-in arrangement that will house a small closet, a chest of drawers and a computer desk in what is currently a large closet space in a small room, I will need to know how to do both drawers and doors as part of it. I purchased Building Cabinet Doors & Drawers by Danny Proulx as a resource both for design and for methods of construction. It is a very satisfying book. I've spent several hours just enjoying the planning of my project and estimating the plywood and hardwood requirements for it. I expect to do both my bathroom and kitchen cabinets over the next two years as well, so the book should get a good work-out.

A "must" for turning out professional quality cabinetry.
The fundamental key to successful design and utility for any piece of finely crafted cabinetry are its doors and drawers. They are also the bane of amateur and professional cabinet makers. In Building Cabinet Doors & Drawers, Danny Proulx draws upon his more than thirty years of professional woodworking to provide authoritative, detailed, "how to" information on the construction and installation of a wide variety of doors and drawers including the calculating of drawer size; melamine, inset, and cabinet-grade plywood drawers, slab, frame, flat-panel, multi-panel, stick, tambour, pocket, and glass doors. Profusely illustrated throughout, this highly recommended manual will substantially assist any novice in turning out professional quality cabinetry.

The popular Hello Kitty is off on a journey around the world in this vocabulary-building book for soon-to-be-well-traveled early readers. As Hello Kitty travels from country to country, she not only changes clothes to fit right in, she also learns how to say "hello" in each new language and identify cultural highlights, foods, and landmarks. In Italy ("Buon giorno Italy!"), Hello Kitty sees a gondola, lots of different kinds of pasta, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, art, and some fancy leather shoes. In Australia ("G'day Australia!") she discovers emus, barbecue, the Great Barrier Reef, Tasmanian devils, Ayers Rock, and the Sydney-to-Hobart Yacht Race.

Each of 13 nations is represented by a colorful two-page spread, with each tourist destination or cultural artifact clearly labeled with its proper name. Children are free to use their imaginations and ask questions to learn more about Brazil, Kenya, Japan, the USA, and more. A glossary is included, translating words into each country's language, accompanied by a pronunciation guide. Hola Mexico and Namaste India! Hello Kitty fans may want to take this book (complete with four postcards, three luggage tags, and a bookmark) along on their next adventure. (Ages 4 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

A Most Darling Book!
When I came across this adorable book in (where else) Bookland, I was immediatly charmed. Being a Hello Kitty fan, I would have been charmed anyway, but even people who have never heard of this too cute feline would delight in this book. In this small pink volume, Hello Kitty travels to many different countries, learning some new vocabulary. Also along the way, Kitty teaches readers to say "hello" in many different languages, such as chinese, french, and japanese. Even though this book is aimed at children ages 4-8, I recommend it to anyone in the mood for a charming and alluring read. Hey, it even comes with four cute postcards, a bookmark, and three Hello Kitty luggage tags. Also, if you like this book, look for other Hello Kitty books. Enjoy!

The Cat Is Back!
I love this little book of happiness. I have been a Hello Kitty fan since I was 8 years old, and this book only confirms that Hello Kitty cares about everyone! From Germany to Mexico she travels along and tells you about her journey. Expect to be dazzled by happy colors, cute drawings, and all Hello Kitty goodness. See Hello Kitty dressed in a African costume, a Kimono, a Dutch costume and more. See foods, bulidings, and landmarks from all over the world. A family treasure (it's hardback so a real keeper) to be passed down to generations of little girls who have or will grow up on Hello Kitty like I did. AWESOME!

Around the World with Hello Kitty!
Who *doesn't* love Hello Kitty? Supercute Sanrio cartoon spokeskitten gazes at you with her round black eyes, red bow askew on her left ear, from thousands of Sanrio products ranging from backpacks and stickers to the Hello Kitty toaster (highly recommended) and bathmat (almost too cute to use!) While this isn't Hello Kitty's first foray into the book field, it's certainly the most attractive.

Basically plotless but attractively designed, each colorful two-page spread takes Hello Kitty from country to country, dressing her up in native costume (you've not lived until you've seen Hello Kitty in a Mexican 'Day of the Dead' mask) and showing off various food, animals, objects and places from that country, and a friendly way to say "hello!" in that country's language. My only disappointment? Hello Kitty doesn't visit England (she *lives* there already, if you follow the Sanrio official backstory).

A pronunciation and translation guide in the back helps you through saying what you've seen in the book, and punch-out Hello Kitty postcards, luggage tag and bookmark are a fun extra bonus!

The beauty of this book is its dual appeal: not only will it be fun for very young children to learn about other countries, but the appeal of the character and her wonderfully simple but smile-inspiring design has made Hello Kitty the most popular Japanese import since Godzilla. Whether you enjoy this as a simple kids' book or a giggle-inspiring camp item, you can't deny the gentle and happy appeal of Hello Kitty. And hey, it's easier to display on a shelf than that Hello Kitty vacuum cleaner or the Hello Kitty spatula.

Let Me Look in Your Drawers: Simple Solutions for the Organizationally Challenged

Amazon base price: $10.00

Not Helpful
Contains almost no useful information. Many pages only contain a few sentences. It would have been possible to condense everything in this book into a four page pamphlet. The books by Hemphill and Morgenstern have much more substance, but my favorite is Pat Dorff's book.

Organization is NOT my middle name.....
After reading this simple book, I was inspired enough to sort through and organize 2 years' worth of stacked papers. Easy-to-read instructions and easy-to-implement ideas make this book a must-have for everyone who is organizationally challenged!

Revenge for the Organizationally Challenged
Rise up all pack-rats! Band together all those who have junk drawers that are fast overtaking your kitchen! Melinda Mitchell has written a book that enables us to endulge our habits while putting order to them. Let Me Look in Your Drawers gives the pack-rats of the world guidance by providing a step-by-step plan to take all of our "precious papers" and organize them in a fashion that is simple and in a way that all of us can live with. In her recommendation for "Coming Up For Air" Melinda points out that there is no "right" or "wrong" way for us to organize ourselves, the point is to just get organized in the way that works best for you. I like that. Too many times I try to duplicate exactly what works for someone else when in fact if I would just take the suggestions of someone else and apply them to my own space, I come up with the solution. Melinda presents many suggestions in this book that you can apply to your own situation which will lead to solutions. The world is pretty chaotic right now and to be able to restore order to some small part of it, makes me feel a bit more in control.
