Great book but needs more writing

This was a short read, and very good book. great photographs. like the previous poster said above, Rodriguez does a great job at giving readers a look inside this world and his past life thru the photography. This book is mostly photographs, w/ not alot of writing. I wish it would of had more writing, but it is a good book. I also wish the author could have gotten the members in this book to comment a lil bit more.. There's mostly comments from ppl who run the juvenile facilities.

Overall, a good book, but wish it had a lil bit more to offer.

Incredible, raw and real, the photographer opens his life to us and to many others in this intimate journey of our children inside and outside the Juvenile Justice system in America today

It is important work and we need to see more books like this one

Worth every dollar. Altho I'd have chosen a different typeface for the design. The photos are outstanding and the juxtaposition of nature to architecture makes this book an exceptional one.

History has never been so entertaining and enthralling. This is was such a unique time and yet I could see so much of today's headlines in my mind as I read.

Unbelieveable photos! A must buy for history lovers.

Berton, a well known writer of Canadian histories, has put together quite a collection of photographs in this glossy tome. If you are realy interested in the subject, I suggest Klondike Quest for the remarkable pictures, and "The Klondike Fever", also by Berton, for a written account. I can't praise the collection of photographs enough.

Fascinating glimpse into Korean history
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-11
Having worked in Korea, and visiting Seoul many times while I was there, I have developed a keen interest in Korean history, particularly in the colonial era as Korea began to open its kingdom to the West for the first time. This book helps me visualise what the people, and the places, were like as Korea moved into the modern age.

A number of photographs were taken by Herbert Ponting, who later accompanied Captain Scott to the Antarctic, and by Felice Beato, who is the first known photographer to have worked in Korea, having being part of the American Trading expedition in 1871. Other early western photgraphers have their images reproduced here. A number of Japanese photographers also worked in Korea, during the time of the Japanese colonial occupation, and a sampling of their work is included.

There are images taken from the first significant foray by the Western world into Korea by America, American ships making their presence felt on the Korean penisular in 1871 and capturing, probably for the first time ever, photographic images of Korean people.

There are samplings of the initial contact with the outside world, and of some of the minor ensuing conflicts. Farming and industries are depicted as is daily Korean life in the cities such as weddings and funerals, and general street scenes such as cobblers plying their trade. There are a number of formal portraits of members of the aristocracy and government officals. There are also hand coloured photgraphs of members of Korean embassy staff in Japan, which are interesting for the ceremonial costumes they are wearing.

I can highly recommend "Korea Caught in Time" if you have an interest in Korean history, as it will supplement any history books you may have on Korea.

Rare pictures from unknown land.

This book presents rare pictures form a country that had sealed itself off from the rest of the world and tried to keep out the west. Not until the latter part of the last century was Korea forced to open up. The pictures not only present first impressions of Korea by western photographers, but also show an early show of western force against the desire of Korea to keep itself free of western influence. The early documentation of imperial force gives thought to how much or how little things have changed from just a century ago. Native Koreans themselves would perhaps enjoy the early photography of their country. With Korea so much in the news today this book can teach a great deal.

The images are Captivating and that carries this book. It may not exactly have its finger on the spirituality of its genuine subject but the photography and sensitivity shown in the quality publication do stimulate the mind. Rather erotic stuff and that cannot be overlooked.

Beautiful Damsels in Distress
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-03
Dave Naz is sticking to a formula that works - and it's paying off for him. Like his previous books (Fresh, Legs, Panties, and Lust Circus), L. A. Bondage is populated with attractive, glamorous young ladies who are willing to strut and pose in in accord with his fetish-flavored vision. Beauty plays as big a role here as does the bondage element. Even when his subjects are tied-up and hoisted into trees, they seem light and effervescent, even delighted with their predicament. His distressed damsels are absolutely dreamy to behold - and that's very likely what Naz intended.

Once again, Goliath hits a home run on production quality. This 10x7" volume is 157 pages of exquisite photography matched equally by it's flawless production.

My style guru, and one of my biggest inspirations, Andre Leon Talley is the epitome of style. He is the best dressed man in the world, and everyone in the fashion world knows it. This book is great! The book show's us how he came to be such an amazing person, not just a style icon. His biggest supporters his grandma, and Mrs. Vreenland(A once Vogue's Editor and Cheif) were suh amazing people as he describes them in such vivid detail. I hope to meet him one day as i aspire to be the next Editor And Cheif of Vogue. LOVE YOU ANDRE, for your amazing kindness and also because your a person that is real and not lost into the world of Fashion in which we all love, but sometimes can be crazy and fake and misguid people.
Your Biggest fan,

Irresistible little gem of a book!

Review Date: 2003-04-07
There is something addictive about this little book, filled with seemingly dull, commercial postcards from Germany. The heft and compact size of it make you want to pick it up again and again and dream about the modern Europe of the 60's and 70's. No words get in the way. The images are of autobahns, health spas, restaurants, apartment buildings...and the overall effect of seeing these tidy, newly built spaces--without people--is somehow poignant, hopeful, serene and surreal. Often, geometric shapes dominate a landscape or visual field, and the postcard becomes a reduced, abstract scene which may or may not have been photographed on earth. "Boring" postcards is strangely fascinating!

A Singular View of the World

Review Date: 2004-12-03
Creative people live for those rare moments, often called the `flow state', where time dissolves and a feeling of being totally absorbed in what you are doing takes over. That's what I feel when I spend time with this wonderful book by photographer Eric Meola.

In travels from Asia to Africa to India, Meola shows us images at times lyrical, at times startling, and always perceptive and respectful of his subjects. The sequencing of images throughout the book provide fascinating juxtapositions that add greatly to the overall experience of enjoying this book. In many cases, one almost feels that Meola was invisible while photographing people in many of the remote locations he traveled to.

Viewing Last Places on Earth provides a window on the incredible richness and diversity in our world. It's hard to think of a photographer who has a greater devotion to the medium and mastery of the process than Eric Meola, and it certainly shows in this exceptional book.

STUNNING!!!

I had the fortune of assisting Eric in the early 90's on at least six commercial shoots. Although he's been very well known in that world of imaging, IMHO, this is where his true passion is. His first book is FILLED with amazing travel images from front to back. I cannot say enough good things about the images and presentation. First class as expected from my mentor!

Labor of Love
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-05
Many people have loved Lead Belly and his legacy, but none perhaps so much as John Reynolds, one of the listed authors of this book. Although John is listed last of the 4 contributors to the book, this is really his project, and one that he has labored on for many years to bring to fruition. Lead Belly (or Leadbelly) was a seminal force in our understanding of 'American' music, and his influence has informed even those who have never heard of him.

This book is a beauty, and is not meant to be an exhaustive biography, but rather a celebration of the man, his times, his influence, and his music. As such, it succeeds spectacularly. I highly recommend that you search www.youtube.com for Lead Belly videos to accompany your journey through this book. It will add much to the experience, and actually enhance the fact that this book is a wonderful keepsake and motherlode of visual delights and insights in our understanding of this man.

My favorite page was "The Leadbelly Method" by contributor Glenn O'Brien.

Whether you favor the two-word or the single word version of his name, this pictorial biography of Leadbelly is just outstanding! Truly a labor of love by the authors and it should be well received by all Leadbelly fans as well as by any who are interested in folk-music and blues. Particularly poignant are the photos showing Leadbelly just months before his death holding Alvin Singh and/or his guitar. This book is highly recommended!

The Beauty of the Illinois River
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-11-14
David Zalaznik, a photgrapher for the Peoria Journal Star, has created a book of photographs of life on and around the Illinois River. The photgraphs are artfully done and are printed on high quality paper. The book is oversize. Most photographs come with a short commentary from David Zalaznik. Besides the Illinois River, bald eagles, blue herons, and Asian carp are heavily featured in this book. Many of his photographs are quite amazing. The photograph of the great blue heron standing motionless searching for fish in thewaters below the Marseilles Lock and Dam is so outstanding that it deserves to be in a museum. I enjoyed all of the photgraphs and found his photographs of the bald eagles outstanding.

Pat Quinn wrote the forward to the book. Pat Quinn is the Lt. Governor of Illinois and is very involved in conservation of the Illinois River. He gives a short and interesting history of the Illinois River.

I highly recommend this book for people who enjoy nature photograohy and/or are interested in the Illinois River.
