I just bought a used (but mint) copy of this for $50.00. And it was worth every penny. Not only are there amazing (really amazing) nudes of male models like Joe Sayers, Raphael Verga and the Carlson twins, but Bruce Weber's photography of less titillating subjects is beautiful, too. If you like his work, this is the most satisfying collection since Bear Pond. At least that's what I think!

For at least twenty years Bruce Weber has set the standard for male photography. His beautiful work continues in this volume as well. He certainly changed the way a lot of fashion photography is done, having introduced us to the Jeff Aquilons of the world along with other boy-next-door types. (Your boy next door may not look like these young men, but they have to live somewhere.) According to the Plate List most of the photographs were shot in the late 1990's or 2000's although a few of them are done in the mid-eighties. (My only minor complaint about this beautiful magazine/book is that it's difficult so match up the photographs with the pages since the pages are not numbered.) There are a couple of pretty women here, some male portraits, a boxer, a Marine, some opulent rooms, a few closeups of interiors-- "Call Your Mother, She Worries," some landscapes; but for the most part, you'll see beautiful men, who, unlike a lot of the early shots, are often baring all here, both in color and black and white.

Joshen Siemens writes an interesting introduction called "A Man and His Search; the artist includes commentary as well, proving that he is a decent writer as well as a world class photographer. There is also a great photo of Mr. Weber by another fine photographer, Duane Michaels.

"Home Is Where The Heart Is" is a paperback, so handle with care and keep it away from your friends who do not know how to handle a delicate book!

Bruce Weber fans should order this and keep another as a spare. All the photos you see on ebay are in here including those of the Carlsons and others, plus new ones such as an amazing pic of Joe Sayers. Be careful storing it though, this is a softcover. Amazon is thoughtful enough to put a cardboard in the center to protect the integrity of the booklet. Large sized and quality pages and color. At this price - Five stars easily!

My name is Simone. I live in Oklahoma. My family and I have evangelized and sang all over the U.S. and Canada. We met a colony of Hutterian Brethren through a church pastor whom lives in PincherCreek, Alberta, Canada, whom invited us to preach at his church. We became really good friends with the Hutterites. I have been communicating by phone and letter over 11 years with them. I found out from my Hutterite friend Janet Walter from Lamona, Wash. that this book was coming out. I have actual pictures from this book that I've had for years from past letters. The Hutterite people usually don't associate with outsiders, but, by extraordinary happenstance, if invited into their way of life, they will be your friends-for-life; always possessing a place in their hearts. The Hutterites live in colonies and are a hard-working, God-fearing, and family-focused people. I love the Hutterites . . . so will you!

This is a book to return to over and over again. I've opened it in the midst of a hectic, demanding day and the clean black and white images made me feel refreshed and hopeful. The photographs embody a kind of peace I think we all yearn for.

This is a wonderful book...one of those types that you can't find "good enough" words to do it justice. I bought this book after browsing through B&N for several hours one day. I was a little hesitant, because of the cost, but man! It was worth it! This is one of those books that after I haven't looked at it for a month or two, I take it off of the shelf & spend hours with it all over again. This book is a wonderful sonnet of the history of women in America!!

This book, in words and photographs, details the lives of women in our country from its inception. The author does a wonderful job of showing what it was like to be a woman throughout the history of this country. She profiles many courageous, inspiring women who have made a tremendous difference in the lives of others. The photographs alone are worth the price of this book; the text makes it priceless. Thank you, Donna Lucey, for writing this!

As an ersatz photographer, I am aware of what it takes in some small degree to photograph people, no less celebrities. Jack Mitchell's persona allows those about him to drop all pretense and expose themselves to the world in a glimpse of a moment frozen forever in time through Jack's lemses. The rarity of capturing that elusive moment is a particulate spot made available to a select few. And that is as rare as the individual behind the camera, Jack Mitchell is such a rarity and his photographs should be an iconic moment frozen in our psyche forever. There were many individuals photographed here from a different era whom I was unfamiliar with, and this will lead me to discover a bit more about their lives and who they were at the time that photograph was shuttered. This book is a monolith monument, get a copy while it is available.

Don't be fooled by the rip-off titles of other photogs.

Mr. Mitchell has done simply an outstanding and unique job as a photographer of famous people. There is another book out with a similar title that is inferior in all respects. Stick with ICONS AND IDOLS by Jack Mitchell.

Each photograph makes you feel like you are touching a star.

Jack Mitchell has worked magic in transforming his photographs into works of art that explode with life. They are vibrant and alive, capturing the essence of each 'Icon and Idol'. By the very nature of celebrity we think we "know" these people. Mr. Mitchell has captured these public people by penetrating through the veneer to take us into their respective souls. His photographs are pure works of art that one never gets tired of viewing.

The collaborative effort of John Gurda (Seven-time winner of the Wisconsin Historical Society's "Award of Merit") and Christel T. Maass (Academic Librarian, Special Collections Department, Golda Meir Library, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee), Illuminating The Particular is an impressive compilation of the photography of Roman B. J. Kwasniewski in a documentary celebration of the Polish American immigrant experience in Milwaukee, Wisconsin prior to the years of World War II. These were the critical pre-war years (1913 to 1947) were when the children and grandchildren of the Polish immigrant community in Milwaukee were transitioning and evolving into full fledged American citizens. A strongly recommended addition to personal, academic, and community library Wisconsin History collections, Illuminating The Particular provides a superb visual showcasing of Milwaukee's second largest ethnic group and their distinctive community which developed and distinctively hallmarked Milwaukee's South Side.

I bought this book to look at Karen's pictures, but the book offers so much more than that.

The introduction by President Carter sets the stage, and the mix of pictures and chapter texts leads the reader to an understanding of global health issues, with a challenge to do something about it.

This is not just another table top book, but could be a working agenda for global health concerns in the 21st century.

More than your average National Geographic photo book!

"Impact" is more than your average National Geographic photo collection, though it is filled with stunning photos from exotic locales around the world. This book takes the reader on a tour of public health crises facing our world, magnificently illustrating the topic with moving (and sometimes amusing) photos and enlightening text.

I've seen photographer Karen Kasmauski give a slide show/lecture on this subject, and came to understand how she's able to capture such intimate portraits of her subject (mothers waiting with their malnourished children at a Cholera treatment program in Africa; an AIDS patient in the US, tenderly and proudly displaying a photo of his daughter). She's not only well-versed in global public health issues, she's clearly a compassionate individual who's dedicated to improving the lives of her subjects.

The subject is serious, but the photos are vibrant, colorful, compelling, far from gloomy. The text by Peter Jarrett is the perfect compliment, raising all the right issues and providing just the right amount of information without overwhelming us. Overall, "Impact" is an important work that carries a message that should not, and cannot, be ignored.

Unique view of our world and its public health challenges

I know of no other book like this. It covers global public health issues through the lens of an acclaimed National Geographic photojournalist (Karen Kasmauski) with an accompanying narrative by a well-known health and medicine author (Peter Jaret). Combined with a foreword by Nobel Prize-winner President Jimmy Carter and an eloquent introduction by the Carter Center's Dr Don Hopkins, the book is far from a dull public health textbook. The photos are arresting, some startling, and the remarkably readable story unfolds in three sections - State of the world's health, Symptoms of change and Meeting the challenge. All college students should read this book as well as anyone who cares about the inter-relationships between the earth's environment, its people and the human diseases that flourish in both rich and poor countries.

Notwithstanding the dire portrayal of scourges like AIDS, obesity, pollution and social upheaval, the overall message is a hopeful one. Jaret writes "Yet despite these dangers, the field of public health today is marked by a surging sense of optimism, born of the creation of bold new coalitions of individuals and institutions determined to bring the benefits of an ongoing revolution in medical science to the people who most need them."

I found this to be a coffee-table book that I quickly read from cover to cover and will do so several times again. It clearly preserves the photographer's personal view of the world with her choices unimpeded by any risk-fearing editor. The captions and intertwining text are never overbearing or boring but weave the way through the gallery of pictures that are the heart of the book. Some people might be inspired to then read more about public health, others might hopefully reach for their checkbooks to make donations to specific programs. This book would make a good intelligent present for anyone who cares about today's world and who respects the National Geographic Society's work.

I was lucky enough to see the once-in-a-lifetime exhibit for which this book is the catalog, and for that alone it is outstanding. The Pictorial movement produced some of the finest photographs by some of the greatest masters ever to pick up a camera. Impressionist Camera does a great job explaining the motiviations, tribulations and triumphs of the likes of Steichen, Kasebier and Coburn. This loving and detailed examination of the genre makes a great addition to the library of any fine art photography practitioner, collector or historian. A good companion work is Steichen's Legacy

Captures the creations and sentiments of the era.

Pictorial photography flourished at the turn of the 20th century and crossed genres, styles and international borders as it produced celebrated artists and fostered artistic change. Here to celebrate these changes is Impressionist Camera: Pictorial Photography in Europe, 188-1918, a narrowed focus on European community photography approaches. Selections consider how photographers created unique works and visions, how they influenced on another, and how they contributed to the fusion and symbolism of pictorial photography as a genre. This book represents the first comprehensive country-by-country examination on the topic and draws together contributions by an international team of art and photography scholars and historians. Sepia and black and white photos throughout capture the creations and sentiments of the era.

A BEAUTIFUL book and great addition to a home library. This book is about Carl and Grace Moon who had a special connection to the Indians of the southwest, however it is also about the wonderful Native people who inspired them. Many beautiful photos and very in-depth text! These people are still there, I have visited with them often. I hope this book will serve as a wonderful tribute to them.

Mr. Driebe has done beautiful creative work in his compilation of In Search of the Wild Indian. It is packed full of photographs and has enough history and information to provide the reader with a great understanding of the photographer's life work while instilling the desire to want to learn more about these native peoples. The subjects in the photos are uplifting, haunting and expressive. The energy in this book is amazing. I thank Mr. Driebe for this gift -- it is ageless and will continue to take top billing on my coffee table.

antique photos of all aspects of pre-modern Indian culture

Review Date: 2007-11-19
The plain title does not begin to do justice to the richness and diversity of the contents. The numerous lightly sepia-toned photographs, many full-page and one a panoramic fold-out, are especially handsome as well as informative as to Indian buildings, royalty and their traditional wear, ordinary Indians, ruins, and landscapes and nature scenes. But even with these, the book is more than only a distinctive album of vintage photos of India. Essays by art historians and critics go into various aspects of the project engaged in by native Indians and colonial British to record India in all its diversity and foreignness with the new device of the camera, as if to preserve India before it would be touched by the machinery and pace of the modern world.

Different native and colonial photographers were attracted to different aspects of India during the decades covered. Some concentrated on pictures of different ethnic groups; some on portraits of royalty; while others recorded the British administrative and military presence. With essays on several of the leading photographers, the book is also a survey of the field of photographic work done in India in the mid to late 1800s and into the early 1900s. Thus, "India Through the Lens" can be appreciated both for its exceptional, engaging photographs and as a introduction to the subject of photography in India.

A visual reference of museum quality for researchers, or just people interested in this country.

This book accompanies an exhibition of photography collection of India for the period 1840-1911. These images are produced more than hundred years ago, during the early ages after photography was invented. Indian and foreigner found photography as magic, when using their camera to capture the surrounding environment to image. It covers powerful images about landscapes, people, architecture, etc from India.
