This book deals with the Sunwear and Hollywood Beauty of the 1930s to the 1950s. That happens to be the subtitle, so it's easy to explain. The book is full of pictures focused on the swimsuit models and pin ups of those years, with such greats as Maureen O'Sullivan, Penny Singleton, Jean Crawford, Betty Gable, Rita Hayworth, Veronica Lake, Marlene Dietrich, Dorothy Lamour, Barbara Stanwyck, Karen Randall and much, much more. You'll drool at how sexy the women are. So make sure to put plastic on the book.

Great photos, lots of them--my only wish is it went up to 1959 and included more of the 50's. Not many of these beauties look that tan so 'sun kissed' is a good term. If you're looking for a good resource for period bathing suits this is it.

This is a book that any classic movie fan will love. It is filled with gorgeous photos of movie stars modeling swimwear. Many of the photos are in color and I have never seen them published anywhere else. Paulette Goddard, Betty Grable, Carole Landis, Gene Tierney, Marie McDonald, and Marilyn Monroe are among the many actresses featured in this terrific book. There is also a nice forward written by Ann Rutherford.

It's obvious that "Sunkissed" is a labor of love. A nostalgic look at the glamor that was once Hollywood, "Sunkissed" is a trip back in time. The author, Joshua Curtis, captures the essance of the golden age of motion pictures with brilliant color layouts, original photographs and accurate text. This is one of those rare books that should occupy a perminant spot on the shelf because it will never become dated or out of style. A pure joy for any fan of the 1930s and 40s.

I bought this book a long time ago.. and I'm still not sick of it! The photographs are beautiful, the scenery, the women, the colors... everything!

This gives a new llok at Cuba than what we are used to. I read the magazine "French" a lot and Le Goues is in almost every issue. He is one of my favorite photographers.. just waiting for the pictures he took while in Costa Rica to get published in bookform!

I just fell in love with Steiff Bears as a child growing up in England. As a British expat living in California seeing Marc Hoberman's "Teddy Bears" brought back fond childhood memories of "chocky" my constant childhood companion. The personalities of the bears come to life through the photography making this book something special for bear lovers the world over.

I Picked up this gem of a book at a Teddy Bear convention in Chicago. What a wonderfully beautiful book this is. The photographs are gorgeous(how did they get those bears to pose like that) and the text reveals a lot about each bears personality. If your a Teddy Bear LOVER and collector like I am then the book Teddy Bears is a must for your collection!

I am a book lover and a Teddy bear lover and this is one of the most amazing books I have ever seen. I was recently at the book show in Chicago and was stopped dead in my tracks by the photographs and the delightful captions in this book. The bears are cute beyond words, the captions are endearing, and the young photographer and writer is going to go places. He is destined for quite a career. This book will become part of my personal collection and also is slated for Christmas giving, baby showers, birthdays, and anyone else that gets a gift from me.

If you only by one Teddy Bear book this year, make it this one! In fact, if you are buying this book as a present, better buy two. Because when it arrives and you look through it, you're going to want one for yourself! These bears have a whimsy and outlook on the world that's all their own! Marc Hoberman is a fantastic photographer with a real knack for bringing these bears, and their world, to vivid life. The captions are gently humorous, giving readers an insight into the world as bears see it. Captain Sam and pool-playing Douglas Padpaw are among my favorites, but they are all wonderful. Buy this book, you won't be disappointed!

There are few bonds as close as the one between man - or woman - and dog. What creatures are as cherished as our canine companions? More than just man's best friend, the dog has become an honorary, and honored, member of our society. To celebrate this unique relationship, A THOUSAND HOUNDS brings together over 400 photographs of dogs, many of which have rarely been seen.

Spanning more than 150 years (1839 to present), this book chronicles the evolving relationship between man and dog. Included are no-nonsense 19th century working dogs, adventuring dogs, dogs of war, police dogs, fictional "superdogs" like Rin-Tin-Tin and Lassie, beloved family dogs, and, to some, the pinnacle of canine achievement: the ultra-bred and groomed show dog.

Intellectually and visually stimulating, A THOUSAND HOUNDS is far more than just a collection of dog pictures. This unique book features the work of hundreds of world-famous photographers and artists (from Picasso to Man Ray, Ralph Gibson to Eric Fischl, Wolfgang Tillmans to David Salle, and of course, Elliott Erwitt and William Wegman), dozens of witty and moving quotes about dogs, and captivating essays on the presence of dogs in the history of photography and their relation to man.

I have just returned from seeing Steve Lehman's exhibition of photographs from Tibet at the Newseum/NY- PLEASE GO SEE THIS SHOW IF YOU CAN!!! I stood before some of the most touching and moving color, black and white photographs and collages with tears running down my face at the inhumanity and humanity of the disgusting situation in Tibet. How can the United States and other so-called free nations stand back and allow this foul occupation continue to take place? Not only is the culture, religion, architecture, forests, etc. of Tibet being decimated but MOST IMPORTANTLY her people are being mass murdered, tortured and ignored by the "powers that be." (The setting of the show was wonderful also with thankgas, prayer wheels and other Tibetan objects. It was also incredible to be surrounded by all the photographs in one fell swoop.) I was particularly struck by the personal, hand-written descriptions on the photographs which made them even more immediate. One could really feel for the peaceful protestors who were subsequently imprisoned and tortured. I searched their faces and was mesmerized and thought about what each person's life was like now. Even if you cannot stand before the pictures, be surrounded by the injustice of it all, do obtain the book and see for yourself. This is photo-journalism at its finest and most poignant.Mr. Lehman's photographs give ample illustration that more needs to be done to help the Tibetans and now!

A lovely book, safe on the most conservative coffee table and full of moments that generate emotions

Review Date: 2006-12-29
Underworld is one of my `special' books. Much of my collection is either focussed on the technical aspects of photography or the product-high quality photography, usually applied to either Glamour or Erotic applications and a smaller collection of the best of Landscape or Sexual photography. Underworld falls into one of the smaller categories again and is one of the collections of classic photography. Underworld touches me at a certain deep level and I only usually realize after I've paused long enough to do my occasional casual flick through it.

Underworld takes my emotions back in time. Underworld obviously so well captures the sense of history that I find myself re-living being a child in the `60s and `70s flicking through the magazines in the newsagent of a small remote town. I don't just remember those moments but for some moments I am there again. I see the images of the lifestyles that seemed so surreal to the bright starry eyes of my innocence in the photographic styles represented, possibly taken by some of the same photographers. It brings back a time and place where it was normal to find people sun-baking or swimming naked but seeing my first published photo (outside National Geographic) which included a nipple, I thought `someone's going to hell for that' because it was obviously in a licentious context. This is a book of classic images that snapshot many points in history well. By the same token, there is very little nudity as such or sexual content, so much of it just having the undertone that was the hallmark of the style then, inferred but never spoken, in your mind rather than in your face.

This is a book I'd be happy to share with my Father, who, because of his and my shared interest in photography subscribed to `Australian Photography' magazine, in part so he could pass them on to me. These magazines came to me but not before any articles about shooting nudes or images containing such things as nipples, pubic hair etc. had been carefully scissored out. What little there may be in Underworld that would challenge my dear Dad's values and view of the world is in context enough and with the subtlety of the time and style, as opposed to the gratuity of our more brash, and superficial styles of more recent times.

I love this book because when I flick through it I don't just remember periods in history, I re-live them. I feel the sand between my toes, feel the emotions I did as a kid finding photos of the rest of the world bewildering and enthralling, I can smell the dry rot in the timber and a million other forgotten moments it triggers in my mind.

This classy collection of photographs (most of them black-and-white) from the famous, infamous and anonymous covers 100 years of shutterbuggery of the least public aspect of fashion--underwear. She, he, straight, gay, in between--this book will be appreciated by all connoiseurs of photography, fashion, and the art of the book. Underworld is a loving appreciation of the human form with often whimsical arrangements (the Maidenfrom center spread is a masterful touch) featuring the work of Andre Kertez, Steven Meisel, Man Ray, Robert Mapplethorpe, Brassai, Robert Doisneau, Imogen Cunningham, Cindy Sherman, and 70+ other surveyors of the human landscape.

A great gift for newlyweds or that special someone in your life.

An amazing record

Review Date: 2007-08-15
What is incredible is how Vishniac captured the variety of Jewish life in late 1930s eastern Europe--from the streets of Warsaw, Cracow, and Lublin, to villages in the Carpathians. His photographs also contrast the extreme poverty many Jews fell into at the time (especially as a result of official boycotts of Jewish establishments) with the richness of intellectual and religious life (the two being inseparable in that time and place).

We are shown grandfathers and babies, sages and porters, tzaddiks and merchants, women in the market, boys in cheder, children at play. While strife, anxiety, and resignation are seen on the faces in many of the photographs, there are also many smiling faces--some shy, some beaming at the camera. The most beautiful are those of small children--a girl returning home with a pot of soup and a bottle of milk for the family's dinner, so pleased; a small boy looking off at something his classmates do not see; a boy on a crowded street giving the photographer a friendly wave.

Also of great value are Vishniac's captions, printed at the front of the book. One hopes that some publisher will bring this valuable book back into print.

I was amazed at the quality of the images and the sensitive approach to what has become an amazing record of that, which many of us could only imagine from verbal accounts. It is without doubt the best photographic recording of a society which was to be brutally decimated. Vishniac's photographic artistry in my mind are on a par with Cartier Bresson whom I greatly admire. Thanks to the publisher for printing such a wonderful book.

No doubt about that.

One look at the pages of this wrenching book will tell the story. Roman Vishniac, secretly, in some cases, shot thousands of pictures of the Jewish population of Eastern Europe, shortly before they were swallowed up by the Holocaust.

Young, old, in-between are shown going about their ordinary lives, some already paying the price of the prevalent Eastern European anti-Semitism, virtually oblivious to what was coming their way.

You can't look at these pictures and not shudder: certainly no one in these pictures can still be alive, and it's not just because of the passage of time. Most of the people photographed here lived in the smaller villages, segregated in many cases from the Gentiles, wearing clothes that quickly and easily identified them to their destroyers.

Vishniac shot an estimated 16,000 pictures, but managed to get only about 2,000 out when he fled to the United States in 1940. We should be grateful for what he's given us, and mourn all that was lost.

Open this book and you will enter a world of the vanished, but not vanquished. Roman Vishniac's stunning black and white photographs of the destroyed Jewish communities of Eastern Europe will surely enter your heart, as they have mine. The simple, sometimes stark compositions are primarily of the faces of Jews long lost in the flames of the Holocaust. Most of the photographs have a brief explanatory comment that gives them context. Vishniac takes us into the tiny basement apartments of Warsaw's Jewish porters, the logging villages of Carpathian Ruthenia, and the narrow streets of Vilna. I found myself drawn into that world where Jews worked, studied, walked on their way to and from synagogues or markets, plowed fields and played in the streets. My own family originated in that world, and I thank Roman Vishniac for giving me a glimpse of it. I highly recommend this book.

I'm a traveler, but no matter how much time I can spend in a place, I inevitably feel like I'm just scratching the surface. Even when sitting in a cafe or small square away from the usual tourist destinations, I always feel like I'd like to learn more about the "ordinary" folks walking past; VivaColores does just that, and the book proves I am right in my belief that even the most average-seeming people can be extraordinary. The book is a journey into Guatamala, but more so, it's about discovering the the rich lives of the people there.

Like Gianturco's prior books, this one is filled with great photography, enlightening text, and serves well as a conversation-starter on your coffee table. But, reading VivaColores also makes you feel like a better person for the time spent.

I highly recommend this book as a gift to anyone, or to yourself. Enjoy!

I always keep an eye out for new books by photographer Paola Gianturco. When I opened VIVA COLORES, words like stunning, beautiful, gorgeous just rolled out! The photographs here are so vibrant, the book pulls you in to explore what else you'll find beyond its sheer beauty. And what you do find is a beauty of another kind in addition to its visual artistry. You'll find the strength, the soul of a people.

The text by David Hill succinctly and eloquently gives voice to the valor and courage of everyday Guatemalans who have flourished against all odds. The people profiled share dreams for themselves and their country, like 12-yr old Maria, one of nine children, who wants to be a doctor. Her family is so poor that they can't buy food, yet so resourceful since the father rents land to grow their own food. Lucky for Maria that her parents understand the value of education, so she goes to school and excels and now has a scholarship ensuring her continued learning.

The text is written in Spanish and English, enabling so many more people to journey to this dynamic country and experience its spirited people. Like eye candy these rich color photographs make this book a wonderful gift. And the benefits don't stop there. The authors have designated the proceeds to benefit the PAVA Foundation, which works with villagers in Guatemala's highlands building bridges, schools, water pipelines, providing teachers and scholarships, amongst its many services. Truly a great book and gift, for so many reasons.

If only a book like this was done for each salmonid species. Great photograhy, very interesting text. This is still the only stunning volume on salmon fly fishing as seen through the eyes of a master photographer. Bravo!!!!!

Of course I would like to review this addition, but since there is a limited supply here in the salt water environs of the Virgin Islands, it has been extremely difficult to find a copy. Therefore, please don't hesitate to send us one for our perusal and subsequent comment. Hope all remains well for you and Paula. Mollie and John

This book has some of the best photography that I have ever seen. I ordered it because it has a very special place in my heart. My father is in it,in the Margaree River chapter. Your description of him just warmed my heart and the photo did too. He is Willie Joe Chiasson and I am his daughter Ethel Clark (formerly Chiasson). I now live in California. I was so pleased and proud to see this and I cannot tell you how happy you made me as well as him. I would also like to send my regards and appreciation to whoever else was involved in putting it together, such as Mike Crockett. Do the three dogs in the book belong to Mike? They look like the are having the time of their life travelling around and playing in the rivers all over the country. I would love to hear from you please.

the most beautiful photographs i've ever seen...way to go!

Incredible photos from North Carolina, Virginia, and other East Coast venues. The stories that accompany the pictures are an extra treat. Any fisherman would love to receive this as a gift.
