Documentary-Collection Books

I really enjoyed this book, and was fascinated when I recognized Balog's work from the recent endangered species stamp collection. This book would make a beautiful gift and addition to any animal lover's collection.

"Animal House" is a wonderful book of animal photographs. They are set against unusual and fitting wallpaper and carpet backgrounds. See animals and birds close-up and personal. It's a great book for a gift - especially for animal-lovers.

This book beautifully celebrates the equestrian show "Apassionata"!
Complete with four audio CDs and incredible photography, this is not a book to miss. I saw the show with my mum and dad and I bought the DVD while I was there, but I wished I could have perchased something I didn't need a machine for to look at. Now I have it! This wonderful book brought back all the memories of this emotion-packed show. The only disappointment I had was that not all the music in the show or the DVD were on the CDs. Obviously, it isn't possible to cram all the gorgeous music from the shows into four CDs, but I had hoped for some of my favorite pieces to be there. (For example, the thrilling music from "Cross of Fire" and "Pas De Deux" were not on the CD.)
Other than that small complaint, I love the book and photos. The CDs are also excellent!

You will appreciate this book if you enjoy the films and books of Larry Clark and Harmony Korine.

This book was excellent. I ordered it for my daughter who was doing a report on the state of Arizona. She was not only able to use the information in it, but took it to school and passed the book around her class as a visual aid.

I was introduced to Arnold Odermatt's work at the Chicago Art Institute, some years ago. I found his photographs evocative, often amusing, and sometimes haunting. His use of black and white photography with the often spectacular backdrop of the Swiss countryside, never grow tiring. Each photograph tells a story. Odermatt has obviously taken care year after year in the setup, use of lighting and selection of angle of his pictures. His story notes that his fellow police officers often complained about the length of time he would take setting up for each photo.

This book not only includes a number of car crashes, but also interesting looks at often mundane police work. Odermatt seems to have a knack of turning everyday events into fascinating visual commentary. For me, this is not only art, but also as a nice historical document. A slice of the visual history of life in the Swiss Alps following the Second World War, leading up to the time when the modern highways worked their way through these remote Swiss ski towns.

Having seen a number of Odermatt's other photos, I wish this volume would include more of them. I've found so many of them thought provoking. That being said, if you have the money (these books always seem to be expensive) and the interest in Odermatt's work, I highly recommend this book.

One of the very few existing attempts to create a visual language that derives from and explains our globalized world, through its symbols, shapes, objects and architectural/spacial relationships. The photographs span through half the globe, from Rome to Osaka but, through the formal rigour typical of such a "grand project", they are devoid of any local folklore and commonplace description, even when the subject itself is among the most recognizable iconas of our civilization.

This is a beautiful book of photography. The original montage artist's works are currently on display (1/03)in a San Francisco gallary. This book provides a beautiful photo record. The montages (photos of the artist as a child, classical paintings, etc)combine the artist's past influences around his thoughts and experiences of life and death, war, homosexual repression and freedom, and Catholicism. Like Mappelthorpe, some of the creations are sexual/religious and initially shocking, while beautiful. The book explores the meaning. It is a great success.

This book is a shine of light and spirituality at disturbed days like these.

This book is a fabulous addition to my research library. The photographs of vendors and their wares; storefronts and their dressing; and people living their lives on the streets of Paris are invaluable to me as an opera set dresser and propmaster. The photographs are, of course, beautiful in their own right; and the text is informative, poetic, and interesting.
