Great Book

This book is very informative of Walker Evans. It shows a wide variety of his work form portraiture to architecture, from the streets of New York to exotic places. It not only shows the works of art but also shows short blurbs about the place he was at and what was happening in his life; like why he was there and what he wanted out of the photo shoot.

The part I like best about this book is that it references whose work he was admiring at the time. It also references his feelings, whether it was something he hated or something that was inspiring him. The print of the book is also very representational. It shows in great detail the contrast and depth of the works of art. I give the book 5 stars. I really enjoyed reading the book.

If you are a fan of photography, or more importantly intrigued by the photographers subjects, this is a must have. Danielle Levitt's focus is American teens shot in their natural habitat, and the effect she has on her subjects coupled with her eye for personality and setting is astounding. It's as if you are observing an alien race on a planet that you didn't know you inhabited. Buy this book, it's amazing.

The photos in this book capture raw adolescence and the copious free time that goes along with it. The kids in the book are just hanging out where kids hang out; bedrooms that are not styled for magazines remind us that these photos tell true stories.

A fun addition to the hipster coffee table.

Landscape miners

Review Date: 2007-09-16
The 198 photos in the book are part of the 450 that have very generously been given to the Getty by LA collectors Nancy and Bruce Berman. This lovely book was published in conjunction with an exhibition of the photos at the museum in 2006 and 7. The twenty-four photographers featured are probably the leading contemporary exponents in the US of this landscape image capture and one reason I like this type of book is that I get to discover photographers I was not aware of. My main discovery here was Jim Dow. In the back of the book there is an excellent biography of the photographers which nicely lists their books, I've already got my eye on one by Mr Dow.

If you are familiar with recent landscape photography (and I think it's worth stating that this means the man-made landscape rather than natural) you'll most likely have seen some of the photos included: 'Petit's Mobil station' by George Tice, 'Red building in forest' by William Christenberry or '2nd Street, Ashland, Wisconsin' by Stephen Shore are three I've frequently seen but I feel the strength of the book is the opportunity to compare how these twenty-four photographers interpret the same subject.

The impressive page size: about eleven inches square, screen: 250dpi+ and quality paper and printing mean the photos sparkle on the page though I did wonder if maybe a few images had been taken from chromo prints rather than the original transparencies. I noticed a softness and lack of detail in a Stephen Shore photo of Easton, Pennsylvania for instance.

The book cannot be considered a definitive survey of contemporary landscape photographers, only those in the Getty Collection have been included so no Lewis Baltz, Jeff Brouws, Gregory Conniff or David Graham for example but those that are presented are clearly part of the top creative interpreters of man-made America

A Sense of Place

This is lovely book with stunning pictures. Seattlites will enjoy the sense of awe that is at the same time familiar and other will be able to explore these beautiful wetlands for the first time.

Photos of birds, berries and bark all bring to our attention the wonder in the small parts of nature that are so often overlooked. At the same time misty waterscapes show the full grandure of the Washington Park Arboretum.

So many books show only a few photo's. This book is all photo's! I have many books on willife as I am an Artist and books are the one way I can study the animals and habits. This is by far the best small book "ever". It's also attractive and is great for a table.

If you are bored by tiresome text about African animals and like some of the best African animal photos ever taken, this book is for you. This book is all photos, taken over many years in many places. Some of the photos have titles identifying the subjects; many of the photos are completely untitled.

On the downside, if you need some descriptions and background to accompany the photos, you won't get it here.

Compositional perfection!

Review Date: 2008-07-05
The images created by Wenders in this book are nothing short of extraordinary. His eye for colour and composition are remarkable. They are very evocative by the simplest and most minimalist methods. This edition can be enjoyed in association with the liner notes which appear on his website under "haiku's", small poetic passages, describing the scene, mood and intent. A must have!

Couldn't resist the 5 Star rating...

I was tempted to give this a 4 Star rating due to being spoiled by Wim Wender's book "Once" - it is the text associated with the photos that really makes that book ("Once") an absolute masterpiece. But, right as I started to go for the 4, I considered the photographs themselves. Wim has such a great eye and can convey such loneliness and singular isolation from within the frame of something beautiful and busy, that I had to go for the 5 Stars.

[...]Next step will be to get Wim associated with the quality of photo book publishers that produce books for Robert Polidori and ilk - so some of the richer content that can be seen in Wim's original photos can be enjoyed by everyone.

A treasure in the cinema and a treasure in the darkroom...

I too grew up in Wyo. and this book features one of the most interesting cross-sections of the rugged individuals that live there. I purchased it because my brother is featured in it (horseshoer, p. 130), but my friends and family are fascinated by it. It is a featured "coffee-table" book in our home.

I grew up there. Very true to life!

WITH by Ken Ohara features a photographic series of one-hour exposure portraits unlike anything you've seen, challenging the concept of traditional portrait appearances and evaluative processes. Here identify is fuzzed and lost, context boundaries are blurred, and observers are pushed into forming new frames of reference and new points for creating impressions of identity. Any involved in portraiture from either side of the camera will find Ohara's approach unique.
