Makes you want to pack up and move.
If you've ever been to Spain, Greece or Morocco and dreamed of moving there someday, don't buy this book! It's trouble. The photographs are broken into sections like History, Landscape, Lifestyle, The House (Architecture and Interiors)and each one will have you swooning. I could just dive into the pages and never leave. So what do you fancy? I cat nap in a hammock under a shaded arbor? I drink in an Andalucian bar? A pool overlooking the blue water of the Med? You'll find it all and more here. But don't balme me if it makes you want to weep. I warned you!

An honest and beautiful picture journal of the Mentawai
When in Sumatra - Indonesia I read this book, which convinced me to go to Pulau Siberut to see and experience the Mentawai.

Before leaving I was sceptical how much the book really reflected the way that the Mentawai actually live but when I got to Siberut, and experienced these people for myself I realised how true to life the book really is. It doesn't have anything in it that is not accurate, perhaps slightly glossier than reality at times, but not inaccurate.

I took the opportunity to stay with Aman Lao Lao, the Shaman featured in the book who - like all the Mentawai - is a warm, hospitable and often funny guy. They don't wear their dress for show or for photos, but genuinely do dress in the manner shown in the book, although they might have more modern clothes if they need to visit the port or come into contact with officialdom. The Mentawai people are extremely interesting and good natured and I would urge anyone who has any interest in tribal cultures to look at this book as there are very few places where one can see such an unspoiled civilisation, and this book shows with stunning photography how these wonderful people continue to live

NG Does it again!
One of my favorite things about National Geographic has always been the photos and this book is no exception. It is filled with a beautiful photos that span many years and great changes and advancements in photography. I devoured this book, photos only, in an evening at the local bookshop. When I am looking for a relaxing evening I can think of nothing better than to have a National Geographic magazine or collection of photos to pour over.

Evocative Photos of a Decaying Landscape
Looking at these amazingly detailed Photographs I see and feel: Cold, cloudy, rainy, foggy days; lonely abandoned Mines; silence in a once noisy environment; decaying buildings; the scars that have been left on flat landscapes...

Though I also like "Industrial Facades", "Gas Tanks", "Water Towers", and especially the now out of Print "Blast Furnaces", and can recommend them all, there is something about this book I like best of the work of Bernd and Hilla Becher. Perhaps it is because I worked in the Dortmund area at one time, and these photos evoke memories of the past...

The Bechers offer little commentary. It is not neccessary. The photographs say it all. They speak of an active, busy past and of the transitory nature of humankind's endeavors, once the mines were exhausted or too costly to operate. The photographs are crisp and incredibly detailed. Each Minehead has its own distinct character and beauty. In Germany they used to have names...

Re-Living the 70's!
This is a step back in time, to the 1970's, when Kenn Duncan (1929-1986) was one of America's best-known photographers. Kenn Duncan was truly the 70's, his camera captured all of the glitzy fashion, style, lust, and male beauty that existed in this exciting, happy decade, when disco and dance were at there peak. This book is a beautiful collection of some of his most famous male-nude photography. These images are sexy, kinky, campy and innocent all at the same time. Duncan found some of the best looking men available to photograph from that decade.

You can tell Duncan had a way of communicating with his models that brought the best out of them. He loved life, people and photography. It sure shows in this collection of photographs, and I thank him for leaving us this great contribution of his talented work.

Beautiful look at the side of Moscow one seldom imagines
As an American who lived for the last 8 years in Moscow, this book was a wonderful find for me because it shows the great beauty found only indoors in Moscow -- a City that can be somewhat gray. From the baroque excesses of the Kremlin to the Art Nouveau town houses to the Soviet apartments of Moscow artists. Lavishly illustrated in a coffee table format.

Finally, a showcase for these wonderful images
I have long been a fan and frequent visitor to the Mutter Museum, and the items in it's collection have served and continue to serve as inspiration for my work. Ms. Worden has been most generous in allowing me access to some of the 'behind the scenes' items I am delighted to find included in this book.

Anyone who has come across one of the famous Mutter Museum calendars will be familiar with the beautiful photographs from the likes of Rosamond Purcell, Joel-Peter Witkin, Max Aquilera-Hellweg, etc. -- and if not, this is the ideal opportunity to experience them. However, for me it is the archival photos from the bowels (ahem!) of the Mutter's storage rooms that are the real treasures here -- many of which have never been published before. In spite of their generally more clinical nature, these photographs of patients and odd medical conditions often acheive a level of artistry equal to the efforts of the featured contemporary photographers.

The images are complemented by an engaging preface and essay by Ms. Worden, discussing not only the reasons why artists are drawn to the Mutter's collections, but also how these 'pathological treasures' came together under the roof of the College of Physicians.

If this book has a fault, it is that there isn't more of it! I am greatly looking forward to future volumes in what I hope will become long series.

Nan Goldin: Ten Years After: Naples 1986-1996

The power in Nan Goldin's work is born out of her ability to document the drama in the mundane moments of life. As in her seminal book The Ballad of Sexual Dependency, the subjects of Ten Years After are Goldin's friends and she is expert at conveying the emotional charge she seems to feel around them. The photographs depict them at home in and around Naples, Italy, in 1986 and again in 1996. Cookie, Vittorio, and Daniele--to whose memory the book is dedicated--figure heavily in the earlier pictures. The images are of everyday life: the three friends walking a dog in the woods, Cookie alone in the bathtub, Cookie and Daniele casually posing as if for a quick snapshot. But Goldin's lens transforms these shots into sublime images. Cookie's bath is so drenched in yellow sunlight that viewers feel there's a chance they're peering into heaven. Rebecca at the beach holding an infant to her breast, with a towel draped over her head as a sun shield, is as lovely and intense as any depiction of the Madonna and child. When Goldin returns to Naples 10 years later, the three friends are gone, and more of Goldin's images are absent of people altogether. Color-saturated landscapes, building interiors, and introspective human subjects convey a strong sense of the passage of time and its effect on personal histories.

The book is compact and the color photographs expertly reproduced on heavy paper stock. This design makes it very easy for readers to study both the photos and the accompanying writing, fittingly penned by the artist's friends and models Guido Costa and Cookie Mueller. --Jordana Moskowitz

Lovely portraits of love, loss, beauty, and bohemia
I found this collection (with essays by Cookie Mueller and Guido Costa) to be absolutely mesmerizing. The photographs are so compelling, you can almost smell the life and exuberance of these people, so aimless and free, and so close to the underbelly of society. Highly recommended. Especially touching and true are Cookie Mueller's short essays, well worth the purchase.

Nature Calls
I picked up Nature Calls for my father. Let's just say he spends a lot of time in the privy. On the first pass through, the pictures were appealing - funny, curious and down right bizarre! Reading through the second time, I found the facts, stories and poetry to be truly inspiring. Who knew there was so much to learn about the outhouse! The necessary, the backhouse, the privy. The author has done a great job of recording this important part of our American history. I'll never look at a port-a-john in the same way again! I'll be picking up this book for all the men in my life.
