Rare pictures from unknown land. This book presents rare pictures form a country that had sealed itself off from the rest of the world and tried to keep out the west. Not until the latter part of the last century was Korea forced to open up. The pictures not only present first impressions of Korea by western photographers, but also show an early show of western force against the desire of Korea to keep itself free of western influence. The early documentation of imperial force gives thought to how much or how little things have changed from just a century ago. Native Koreans themselves would perhaps enjoy the early photography of their country. With Korea so much in the news today this book can teach a great deal.

Jeanne's uncommon insightJeanne Hilary is definitely one of the most exciting young photographers out there. No one reports on the human condition with more insight. Her subjects have energy, soul, and character. Jeanne can make a yawn or a backward glance look beautiful, and she can take the mundane everyday and make it heroic. Pay attention. You'll see her name again.

A revealing look at landscapeArt,at its best, unveils an experience we did not have before. Sometimes it's an emotional response, sometimes it's intellectual. But it should show you something that you had not noticed or felt or thought of before. Good photography books should do the same. To often we look at landscape photographs as documentation or keepsakes and not as a form for expression. This book reminds us of how expressive landscape photography can be when the right person is behind the camera. It also reminds us how revealing a photography book can be when the right author is behind the word. Mr. Protzman knows a lot about looking. But most importantly he knows a lot about revealing. This is truly a book worth looking at and reading.

A beautiful book by a controversial authorLeni Riefenstahl is a beautiful photographer. Sadly, her talents and reputation have been tarnished by the fact that she made the propaganda film that helped Adolf Hitler come to power: TRIUMPH OF THE WILL. Riefenstahl claims that she was unaware of Hitler's plans, but this association still taints her name and all works she would later produce, including LAST OF THE NUBA. Some accused Riefenstahl of having a "fascist aesthetic" because the athletic and well proportioned members take center stage in LAST OF THE NUBA, while the elders and women of the tribe are largely ignored.
Controversy aside, this is a beautiful book. The Nuba are a beautiful people, and Riefenstahl's talents are up to the task of capturing it. Some pictures are black-and-white, but they are mostly color reproductions with a slight golden hue. They have a very gritty feel to them, which is excellent for depicting a group of men whose lives often revolve around wrestling; there are many shots of the wrestlers in action.

The Time has Come....Finally!I've been waiting for this very book for quite some time now. Carroll's photography has never been collected in a full form like many other photographers. Previous books have been light on material and all too heavy on the photographs of young child-friends. This book gives a more even account of Carroll's photography---even going so far as presenting the photographs as he did so in his own albums. Rather than classify his photographs, his albums show a wondrous variety of images---a skeleton of a fish, a landscape, a child-friend, a famous painter, a sculpture, etc.... Though it concentrates on Carroll's one hobby, Roger Taylor's essay is as good as any biography, being a hundred or so pages long. Edward Wakeling contributes insightful captions to each photograph in the Princeton Collection---for all are included! What more could one ask for? Wakeling, one of the leading experts on Carroll with a database of information, even offers his list of all photographs taken by Carroll, a list that will be continually updated. He even gives his email address for those who may have lost photographs.
An indispensable book for the researcher and a delight for the casual photography fan.

The photographs speak volumesWith a fabulous introduction, this book begins with beautiful photographs of fathers and their children. It includes famous dads like John F. Kennedy and Mickey Mantle, but also includes everyday and ordinary fathers. There is no written text, but the photographs speak for themselves. Many of the photos show everyday moments. The photos in this book are poignant. This would make a great book for all dads everywhere.

In their previous collaboration Lights Out for the Territory, Marc Atkins's few dark, brooding photographs focused writer Iain Sinclair's dense, impressionistic formulations about London, the city he loves to drift through. Here Atkins's penetrating black-and-white portraits and his beautiful, troubling shots of a London we forget we know dominate. Sinclair contributes essays in a lighter, more journalistic prose than readers of his wonderful, overwrought novels might expect. In them he discusses Atkins, or one of his photographs, and their mutual project of attempting to pin down London's story. And he writes about other writers (Peter Ackroyd, Michael Moorcock, John Healy) who share his fascination with one of the world's great cities. As the title of their book suggests, it is nearly impossible to articulate absolute truths about a space as dynamic as this city, and equally difficult to hold a fixed position on it. Despite that (Sinclair praises his friend for creating flux whereas his writing tries to "mould wriggling chaos"), the pair's project is worthwhile, as it has produced words and some remarkable pictures that only such a troubled engagement could create. This is a visual feast of contemporary photojournalism, in which Atkins's visions and Sinclair's words help the reader perceive a London that can easily be walked past daily without a second glance. --Mark Thwaite, Amazon.co.uk

The London only a Londoner can knowThis book told me more about London and Londoners than a million travel books or books about the legends and myths of London. Sinclair and Atkins are interested in the scenery and people that nobody ever notices. The spaces between highways, for instance, and what kind of people live in them. I read his book on Ballard's Crash and it seemed to me then that while Ballard is noticing the abstract geometry, the beautiful curve of the elevated highway, Sinclair is more interested in who lives under that curve. If you think you know London, think again. You'll know it a lot better after you've read this book. I did and it's a city I've lived in. A book which will become, I suspect, a cult classic.

Fire Apparatus History from Los Angeles CityAn excellent photographic history of fire apparatus that served The Los Angeles City Fire Department from 1953 to 1999.Chuck Madderom has done a great job in photographing some of LA City's most memorable pieces of equipment. The photos are clear and the captions concise. It would be a great addition to any fire buff's bookshelf. Especially those with a sincere interest in fire apparatus from the City of Angels.
