Beautiful portrait of the Land and People of Ireland
If you like anything and everything about Ireland, this book is an excellant addition to your collection. In the tradition of "Day in the Life of ...." books, this book is is a beautiful photographic montage of a culture and a people that has fascinated the world for centuries. You open the book to dawn of May 17, 1991 and enter the daily world of the lives of rural and city people throughout Ireland. Of parents getting ready for the workday, trying to get their kids off to school and the day off to a good start. The book travels through the day from dawn to dusk, unfolding the world of the Irish people and showing the Universal common thread of people around the world trying to live their lives and do an honest day's work. This book is a beautiful montage of color, humor and life and makes a excellant addition to the "Day in the Life..." books that been published in the past decade. Also a side note: The same time the publishers were organizing and executing the book, they also documented the work with a filmed documentary of the "Day in the Life of Ireland" for PBS. If you find a copy of this video, it will make a great companion to the book. You will take a great voyage as you journey through the book. Bon Voyage and Slainte!

Amazing
This is a must own. The photographs are beautiful but what makes this book so powerful is that the people of the Delta are living in the '90's just as they did in the 'teens. For all of the positive changes that have happen since the civil rights movement it obvious that these people have been left behind. The photos will bring tears to your eyes. I would suggest to those people who churches may not be doing that 'Trip to the Holy Land with Pastor so and so' Think about organizing with Habitat for Humanity and doing some building in the Delta.

Pure Theatre
While at once this book is another photo book of perfect specimans of man, there is an undercurrent of feelings. Silent feelings emoting pleasure, pain and anger, love, frustration and beauty. The silent theatre presented here goes beyond the usual photographs of men. The photos themselves are pure and perfect ,but, Mr. Little has managed to pull something else from these images ...emotion. The book itself is very well presented and unusual in it's format. But, it is the pictures and the stories behind them. Using minimal props he has transformed men into voices. We will all find ourselves somewhere in these pages.

The Pulse of France Through a Camera Lens
Elegant black-and-white images of everyday moments, ordinary situations which are seemingly familiar, yet distant. These are the images of Robert Doisneau as he takes us on a photographic journey spanning over sixty years of his photographic vision. Always direct, his images draw the viewer in to spend time visiting the facial expressions, shadows and light, textures and details captured by his gentle way of seeing.

A Photographic Tour de Force
Don McCullin is one of the greatest photographers of our time and this 295-page book beautifully reproduces Mr. McCullin's work. The book includes stunning black and white images of England, Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin, Cyprus, Biafra, Vietnam, Cambodia, Beirut and Bangladesh. For example, the book contains (at page 90) an exceptionally moving photograph of a Turkish woman discovering the body of her new husband, killed with his brother and father in Cyprus in 1964. On the lighter side of life, the book includes gorgeous landscapes of Scotland. And the size of the images is large enough to really do them justice. I highly recommend this book.

Done Honest & True: Richard Steinheimer's Half Century of Rail Photography
Published in Paperback by Pentrex Media Group (June, 2003)
Authors: Richard Steinheimer and Ted Benson
Amazon base price: $29.95
Average review score:

A fitting overview of the work of a master in his field
Richard Steinheimer once told me, "We're not jusgt making photos; we're creating a body of work." With its beautifully reproduced and elegeantly laid out black and white images, this book opens a window into that body of work--and what a body of work it is. While the images themselves are technically flawless, they each also contain an obvious feeling for the subject matter, whether it be railroad rolling stock or the people who make the railroads move. While the book should appeal to virtually anyone with an interest in railroads, it will appeal particularly to those who have tried to focus their own cameras on railroad subjects. Benson's text underscores what is evident in many of the photos--the fact that Steinheimer was willing to drive or hike further, brave more sub-freezing cold, or to just wait patiently longer than others would have to capture just the right image. Steinheimer justifiably became known as the dean of western railroad photographers because he also cared more about his subject matter than most others. If you only purchase one railroad book this year, this is the one to get.

Douglas of Detroit - American Photography of the Male Nude
This is the fourth volume in a series devoted to the classical physique photographers of the mid 20th century. Douglas of Detroit may not have been as famous as Bruce of LA or Bob Mizer, however, he produced photographs that compare favorably with any of his contemporaries. The content is primarily black & white full-page photos ending with a few color shots. Most of the photos are staged indoors with emphasis on controlled lighting. There are a few outdoor shots. There is ample, tastefully presented and staged frontal nudity. The models appear to be comfortable and at ease. This comes across as artistic not pornographic. There are too few examples of a photographic technique that was unique to Douglas of Detroit. He produced some wonderful double exposures using the same model for both images. Many of these shots are quite evocative. If you are a fan of mid-century phsique photography then this is a definite must- have book. Highly recommended.

Strong faces of people made famous.
Photographer Bill Ganzel grew up on the Great Plains and after seeing an exhibition of Farm Security Administration photos in 1970 had the unique idea of searching out the places and people of the original photos and photographing them again. This stunning book is the result of his quest. All the photos have detailed captions and also the thoughts of those Ganzel interviewed.

Of the hundred and eighty-nine photos in the book just over half are from the FSA files, the rest are the result of Ganzel's searching out the original locations over a five year period. Amazingly he found several people who had become famous (though still anonymous) because their photos were widely reproduced in newspapers and magazines in the thirties.

One of these was Florence Thompson who was the Migrant Mother in the world famous 1936 photo by Dorothea Lange. I think it is the greatest photo ever taken and Roy Stryker head of the FSA photo section said it was THE image of the collection. This is what he said in 1972 ...''After all these years, I still get that picture out and look at it. The quietness and the stillness of it...Was that woman calm or not? I've never known. I cannot account for that woman. So many times I've asked myself what is she thinking? She has all the suffering of mankind in her but all the perseverance too. A restraint and a strange courage. You can see anything you want to in her. She is immortal. Look at that hand. Look at the child. Look at those fingers--those two heads of hair.'' So it was a wonderful surprise for me to see the photo Ganzel took in 1976 of Florence and her three healthy grown-up daughters on page thirty-one facing the original Migrant Mother photo of her on page thirty.

He also found Darrel Coble who was the young boy running after his father in the well known 1936 Athur Rothstein photo 'Fleeing a dust storm', taken in Cimarron County, Oklahoma. Another unknown yet famous person who survived the Depression and prospered.

Other photos show railroad crossings, houses, tractors in 1936 fields with combines in 1977 fields, cowhands at dinner, churchs, gas stations, county fairs, court houses. Everyday life and people on the Plains separated by forty years.

This is a wonderful book capturing the feel of the thirties on the Plains and again in the Seventies. If you collect books of documentary photos this one must be in your collection. A gem.
