Analysis and Testing of Distributed Software Applications

Finally! It arrived. Blasts of wind from overseas.
Are you tired of being hit by voluminous blasts of vapour from DeMarco, Watts S. Humphrey, and the three-year-cycle clairvoyant Yourdon? Bless the Lord and Capitalism, the monotony is the thing of the past: now you have the choice of vapour. Freedom came to Eastern Europe, and now (and for unlimited time, I fear) you can enjoy blasts of fresh and cloudy wind from overseas! Here's a diagram-happy, touch-on-everything-cover-nothing, tenured-prof-style one-hundred-dollar book comprising nothing useful and a table of acronyms--straight from Poland where, as an exalted intro says, St. George-like Lech Valensa killed the dragon of the world Communism and broke down The Wall. Well, that don't make them books good... I say, put the wall back where it was. Local bs-mongers are tiresome enough.

Irrelevant for MIS and general management
The book has a lot of conceptual level discussions but no clear message. The concepts are ill-defined and peculiar to the author. Do not expect to find an advice on how to reduce IT costs associated with client/server systems development. The best thing about this book is its title.

Creating a Distributed Application using Enterprise Templates

Author: Thiru Thangarathinam
Amazon base price: $20.00
Average review score:

This is absolutely garbage
This is absolutely garbage. First be aware that WROX is out of business. They have sold their titles to several publishes. It is basically a very short article which is copied from MSDN and tells you nothing about Enterprise Templates. Look elsewhere for information on this topic. Further, after you download this, the source code does not download, and you can't get your money back and good luck complaining to Amazon. This is highway robbery.

Very generic, and not very informative.
Not really very detailed -- lacks content and structure. Was written for managers but achieves little in explaining the workings of the technology.

Awful Reference and Introduction
I purchased this book for my client server class. I had to go out and purchase the client server for dummies to explain and illustrate client server technologies. Hard to follow and author loses you in his self-centered tirades. Do not buy this book, it's awful. Save your money and look elsewhere for your needs.

Microsoft(r) Host Integration Server 2000 Resource Kit
Published in Paperback by Microsoft Press (15 November, 2000)
Author: Microsoft Corporation
Amazon base price: $69.99
Used price: $2.00
Buy one from zShops for: $1.99
Microsoft Host Integration Server 2000 is meant to act as an intermediary for communications among processing and storage systems from diverse vendors--think of it as a sort of Jimmy Carter for operating systems. Systems administrators charged with maintaining a multivendor environment know that the analogy to Middle East warring factions could, unfortunately, be taken a lot further. Microsoft Host Integration Server 2000 Resource Kit exists to further the cause of Host Integration Server, providing a set of tools, utilities, and modifiable scripts you can use to make your heterogeneous systems get along as well as possible. Like any technical book and CD-ROM package, your opinion of this one will vary directly with its ability to solve your particular problems. Regardless, Host Integration Server users will want to have this kit on hand, both for its "just-in-case" value and its ability to inspire new thoughts about how to solve sticky integration problems.

Don't head to Microsoft's Web site, get the list of utilities on this book's companion CD-ROM, and base your decision to buy solely on that. This is the only printed documentation around on one of Microsoft's newest and least-known products, and the authors do quite a bit to explain how the server works, architecturally and procedurally. --David Wall

Topics covered: Microsoft Host Integration Server 2000, explained for the system administrator who has to make it mediate among heterogeneous systems. The bulk of coverage (in text and in software) goes to SNA services, Component Object Model Transaction Integrator (COMTI), and Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ).

Another waste of time from Microsoft
This resource kit is another waste of time by Microsoft. The book contains a lot of theory and duplicate information regarding Host Integration Server. The actual operation of HIS seems to be completely missing from the book. The majority of the explanations are either too short or absolutely useless for direction. In the end, this resource kit is extremely lacking in resources. I did notice that during the entire 1200+ pages, only 20 pages were dedicated to actually explaining how to use the software. I would not recommend this book to anyone. I suggest too download the latest HIS service pack, included in the services pack are the latest series of document about the application.

Object-Oriented Client/Server Application Development: Using Objectpal and C++ (Systems Design and Implementation)

Don't bother with this book
This book is simply a compendium of the most generic software-engineering methods imaginable; consider that there is not a single line of code in the entire book! It may help new managers learn SWE methods, but real programmers will learn nothing about either OOP or client/server development.

There ought'a be a law.............
Against some people being allowed near a keyboard. This book is the biggest waste of time I've ever seen. Harry might have been the star at IBM, but frankly, I wouldn't want to be the one working on his code. There is virtually nothing to be learned in this book. Maybe - just maybe - a general overview of some of the options out there, but that's about it. And if you're leanings are towards Java, forget it. This is an IBM/CORBA focused book. Get a life Harry. And stay the hell away from the keyboard!
