Database Pocket Guide
This book should be renamed as Database Pocket Guide.Good for College students ,who just want to refer to refresh themselves.Good for Database Users whojust want to know little details about Distributed Databases. But for people who are really serious about Distributed Databases, this is not the right choice. A Good one could be "Managing Distributed Databases: Building Bridges between Database Islands"

Worth browsing, not buying
There's a lot of talk in this book but not much code. When it does show code examples, it comes with few comments. I was referred to this book after I read Tom Chritiansen's review that said good words about its use of shared memory. I thought using shm in CGI programming is quite unusual and worth reading. But when I read the section(s), I find too much talk about how to manage a project and little explanation of the C/Perl program that uses shm. This book may be good to managers not for programmers.

Dated material-ignores management problems
This book focuses on how to distribute a software project over multiple geographic locations. It does cover the technology involved, though it is dated in the 1995 mindset (it ignores the Internet, and treats a 64K connection as "high speed"). It covers the use of formal diagramming techniques, conference calls, common file formats and a common database repository. The biggest drawback is that it ignores the management and people aspects of distributed software development. Most projects fail because they try using the same techniques and processes as when all the developers are co-located. The books tell how to build technology to distribute information but it doesn't say WHAT you need to distributed to ensure a project's success.

Not as good as it should be !
This book is not half as good as it should be. It seems to be badly edited and hastily compiled.

There is no flow also.

A tough subject handled sporadically, some well, some not so
This book is one of the first for Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server. The author does a very good job in reviewing the small details but somewhat misses the "big picture" for the non technical small business owner who wants knowledge enough to see the installation and configuration requirements, and perhaps install it himself. The book oscillates between step by step operations for the non technical and the very technical items are some what generalized. This is a little confusing to both types of readers. I was very suprised at the content of NT4.0 sections (very well done with excellent NT4.0 information) that did not reference the reader to how or if they are important to BackOffice Small Business Server. However, there is excellent coverage of potential trouble spots that will save the more technical installer many headaches. Not a book for the small business owner or the non-computer experienced installer. Written before the 4.0a upgrade Service ! release. Easy read and good style.

a decent introduction...
I thought this book was a decent introduction to the subject of Enterprise Management. However, since I work in that area, I was disappointed that there was not more in-depth coverage. I've met the author and I have to say he seems a competant individual. Unfortunately, there are NO other books on the topic with which to compare this work. The closest thing is "Common Information Model: Implementing the Object Model for Enterprise Management" by Bumpus et al. Unfortunately, Spuler's book misses the mark on covering this newer area of Enterprise Management that includes WBEM (Web-Based Enterprise Management) and the DMTF (Desktop Management Task Force). That aside, it is still a useful book for the sys admin or the enterprise planner who wants to be able to monitor life signs of important applications. It's rumored that ....the same monitoring applications described in the book.

Welcoming Greenhorns
this is a good book for small business startup. It goes from defining a server to managing the server and includes everythign between that period. From trends to comparisons of operating systems. It also talks about scalability and has 2 troubleshooting chapters which are pretty helpful. Again it is best for small start up business rather than an individual.
