Unix Distributed Programming

It is indeed easy and well defined
Chris Brown has written a clear book on the Distributed Progrmming under the UNIX environment. When I started to look into this subject I faced so many barriers cause of lack of clarity and easiness of the other books and materials covering this subject. I have to admit also that I sometimes decided to give the whole thing up. Fortunately, I came across this book and it revived my hope. It is really a good book to start with and deserves of studying. Particular attention should be paid on Sockets. I would however suggest some matterials on the web which could be covered before reading this book. Many examples have worked for me. The way he provides the code examples (which are in C) is also comprehensive and anyone with experience in C should not have problems with understanding them. I would, however, recommend other books (such as Stevens Unix Network Programming and Advanced Programming under the UNIX environment as well as Comer's and Steven's Internetworking with TCP/IP III) to read as a flow-up manuals. One should also test available code (the coplete ones) to have some hands on experience on the subject. Some of the thing did not seem consistent with the author to me.

Excellent introduction, but not the deepest book.
This book has very nice explanations. Sometimes they almost seem too simple, but you can count on it not being over your head. It has lots of illustrations and is fairly easy to read. I think the author takes a complex topic and explains it very, very well. It's also a lot shorter than some of the books by W. Richard Stevens. Both this book and Stevens's "UNIX Network Programming" are too old to include POSIX semaphores. If you get your hands on a book on UNIX distributed programming, look in the index for "sem_init" or posix to see if it has the latest technology. I think everyone who programs in a unix environment should read this book to get a broad introduction to this topic. If you have the time to read 2 books on this topic, I recommend this one 1st to understand the concepts and another book with more examples to get more ideas for coding.

Perfect guide to UNIX distributed programming for beginners
This book has helped me a lot with my assignments in a graduate distributed systems course. Even if you are not familiar with UNIX distributed programming, after reading this book, you will start writing excellent programs for UNIX distributed environment. (You need to be familiar with programming in C)

Reference for Advanced Users Only
Users of this book need to have a thorough understanding of Access, SQL servers, and be familiar with writing VB and SQL code for it to be truly helpful. To their credit the authors have included VB procedures for use in tackling specific situations, and it's indexed well enough so you can find answers to particular questions.

I liked the inclusion of the chapter on using Access as a front end for an Oracle database, since that approach is not widely discussed.

My advice to readers of this book is to skip chapters 1 and 5. Chapter 1 was not well written and covers working with DAO. Chapter 5 was better written, but considering that ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) are becoming the industry standard, it seemed a bit odd that DAO received so much coverage up front. In any case, I'd treat those two chapters as appendixes, and start with chapter 2, which actually does provide a good overview of Access in the client/server environment.

Good
Let me first start off by saying that this book is *NOT* meant for beginning Access/VB/VBA/SQL users. It is assumed that this book is geared towards intermediate Access/VB/VBA/SQL users.

This book does one thing well in that it knows that DAO is not the future and that ADO is (for the time beginning). It spends plenty of time on detailing ADO for both Access and SQL Server.

I like the fact that it deals with Access front-ends to SQL Server backends. It even takes a chapter from Kalen Delaney's masterful Inside SQL Server 7 book on SQL Server architecture.

All in all, if you consider yourself at least on an intermediate programmer with the aforementioned technologies, this book will not gather dust on your bookshelf.

All in all, a job well done.

Excellent Development Resource
This book helped me with my development process. I could look at the examples in the book and create my prototype for developing distributed applications with PowerBuilder 6 on time! It has helped me build a relationship with my current client. The book has neat tips and tricks for every aspect of development with PowerBuilder.

Great Resource for PowerBuilder Developer
This book is a great resource. Something you want to have besides you while developing PowerBuilder applications. The chapters on distributed development with PB 6 walk you through every step of development. I loved the book.

Good Advice and Techniques for all programmers
I think that this book does an excellent job of pointing out expecially good and especially bad places to put common code. The book gives new programmers explanations for why certain techniques are better than others. I would like to have seen more PFC discussed, but there was not enough room. If they made a PFC Book with advice, I would buy it.

Advanced Techinques For All PB Developers
This book covers most of the advanced topics such as eMail Interface, ORCA, Network , Performance issues, Administration. The example is very good. Also the basic concepts is covered by this book is an advantage. This is really very good reference for the developer who wants to do more advanced function in their applications.

What film commentary ought to be
Rosenbaum is, for my money, the best film critic out there. His original essay on "Dead Man" led me to take another look at the film, which has since become one of my all-time favorite movies. This thoughtful commentary will help you think about what is probably the best American film made in the 1990s. And, if you like this, you should follow Rosenbaum's columns in the Chicago Reader. I often disagree with him, but there's no one more thoughtful, informed, and passionate about movies; he's a treasure.

a well-written analysis of this brilliant film
a much maligned and mis-understood film when it came out, it's great to see a writer the stature of Rosenbaum giving "Dead Man" the respectful examination it deserves.

Rosenbaum mixes his own thoughtful analysis with excerpts from various interviews he conducted with Jarmusch to illuminate the many aspects of the film: from Neil Young's haunting soundtrack, to the role of tobacco, to its place in the acid western genre.

if you love the film, this book is the perfect companion piece.

Vague On certain points
This book goes into great detail about how powerful the Datawindow is to PowerBuilder. However, the author spends very little time with the actual connection between the Application Window and the Datawindow. Keep in mind that it is somewhat of a simple task but to programmers that are new to the subject, they may be a little confused (as I was at first). My point is this, Datawindows are VERY powerful however if the programmer misses the correct way to connect this particular object, they miss out on alot. Next time make sure you spend more time and put more details into the aspects of Powerbuilder that truely make it the most powerful tool on the market

Excellent. Most complete tutorial/reference.
Out of print, but well worth the search. Covers every aspect of 2 and 3 tier development including the Web. Used this to train our entire programming staff and had them productive in two weeks. I believe this is being revised for Web development.

Distributed Algorithms
Je trouve à M. Tel le maître des algorithmes distribués. Les concepts sont précis et bien documentés. Le livre est très complet, très claire et on peut trouver une extense bibliographie sur le sujet.

Simply the Best Book on Distributed Algorithms!
Gerard Tel's is easily the best compilation of distributed computing algorithms existing. First the contents:

I found its coverage to be excellent, broad yet deep coverage on network algorithms and protocols for communication, routing, deadlock-free packet switching, election, termination, global snapshot, sychronization, authenticating, self-stabilization, failure detection, wave, traversal, deadlock detection, fault tolerance, consensus, sense of direction and orientation, etc. It terms of breadth of coverage no existing book compares to this book. In particular it covers more recent areas like sense of direction and orientation and wave algorithms missed by its main competitor Nancy Lynch's Distributed Algorithms.

It uses very intuitive pseudocode and the algorthimic analysis and proofs are quite intuitive and easier to understand.

My complaints: The coverage in a few areas like consensus are not nearly as comprehensive as Nancy Lynch's. Also, Tel covers algorithms for asynchronous systems mostly and synchronous systems, but Nancy Lynch covers partially synchronous systems as well.

I recommend Gerard Tel's book which costs less and has a deeper and broader topic coverage. For balance you need both books if you can afford them (and indeed Vijay Garg's Elemenets of Distributed Computing as well). Vijay Garg's new book - Concurrent and Distributed Computing in Java would be the best for you if your focus is distributed software development as opposed to algorithmic computing.

For coverage of distributed systems principles, design and architecture I recommend one of the 3 'Distributed Systems' books by Courolis OR Andrew Tanenbaum OR Sape Mullender.

Good, but not enough information on the MS Outlook client.
This book very in depth on the exchange client, but I was disappointed that it only offered one chapter over MS Outlook. I was hoping for an indepth explanation on how Outlook works with 5.0, instead I got an overview on how to use Outlook.

Excellent book by a well-known expert
A well written, technically sound book that is a must for anyone wanting to know the workings of Exchange and Outlook.

This book really makes the Inbox icon universally useful!
A clear, comprehensive guide from a first-rate organization with highly specialized practical knowledge. Don't miss their web-site, either. Before reading this book, I considered hiding the universal inbox; now, its the first place I start my business day, and its very useful. Highly recommended!

A great for advanced programmers
This book is very good. It stepping you through how-to's and problems on distributed applications with Visual Basic 6. It also talks about IIS applications and a lot more. I recommend this book for Advanced Programmers who knows the basics on VB.

Clear Concise Examples along with Helpful Instructions
After picking up this book and reviewing several of the demonstrated examples I have found myself capable of designing as well as implementing several of the methodologies mentioned. Clear instruction on the use of controls that come with VB6 and interesting examples that challenge you to be creative with your designs.

Good, but...
I'm very love this book, but the publisher should published the source code on the web, The CD just broken so I lost the source and some utilities from CD. I try to find the code from the publisher web site but there is no result. Unlike Wrox Press, they published the source code on the web for each book which easy to update and correction. Finally, the source code should be published on the web.
