SImple Networking
Mike seems to make very complex infrastructure seem like scews and bolts. He abilty to make things simple is amazing. I have been working on networks for many years and not often is any problem exactly the same. This then requires the troubleshooter to have an abilty to both understand and solve problems. Mike book and examples make life a little easier when trying to achieve this challenge everyday. I hope all network troubleshooters use the rules in this book as a bible.

A Transatlantic Valentine
This is a very good book on a very interesting and good movie. Christie explores the origins of "A Matter of Life and Death," discusses its attitudes toward time and how the film uses color. I especially liked his examination of the film's historical context, namely how although it was inspired by WWII issues, it was still relevant when it came out in the early years of the Cold War. (Christie quotes a Soviet review of the movie which is quite interesting.)

This book is strongly recommended for those who love the movies of Powell and Pressburger.

Mechanisms for Reliable Distributed Real-Time Operating Systems: The Alpha Kernel (Perspectives in Computing, Vol 16)

Seminal Ph.D. thesis
This is the book version of Duane's Ph.D. thesis at CMU (disclosure: I was his Ph.D. advisor). It covers both the principles and the implementation of the Alpha kernel. The two keystone technologies -- distributed (trans-node) threads and pluggable scheduling algorithms -- were subsequently included in the OSF/1 MK7.3 OS, but are only now in 2001 becoming more widely copied. Both technologies appear in OMG's Dynamic Scheduling Real-Time CORBA and in Sun's Distributed Real-Time Specification for Java. Papers subsequent to this book have more current material about these technolgies.

Balanced insight
"Microcognition" is a wonderful book for anyone wanting to understand and cogitate the most heated issues in AI today. The book is written in 1989, so the most prominent issue is that of connectionism versus classical AI. The book gives very good introduction to both paradigms and provides the rader with lots of background material. The book is basically divided into 2 sections, 1) The Mind's-Eye View and 2) The Brain's-Eye View. The discussion is balanced and insightful, and Clark is a wonderful writer. His conclusion in short is that AI research must continue in both the "Mind's-Eye View" (classical AI) strand and the "Brain's-Eye View" (connectionism) strand for the paradigms have different aims.

A computing breakthrough!
Dr. Sapaty describes some very far out and very powerful technologies that are coming on line for organizational management of dynamic distributed systems. The Internet will no longer be just for sending emails and basic e-commerce in the very near future. I see WAVE as a general solver to a multitude of distributed systems. WAVE is a new methodology and technology enabling the solution of any reasonable, and some that may not be currently reasonable, problem in distributed computer networks, with code mobility being a key principle. The technology allows for the problem description on a semantic level, shifting traditional coordination, synchronization, and data or agent exchange to automatic implementation, making application programming very compact and simple.

This WAVE paradigm looks very powerful: One issue with it is that it is so radically new and improved from what is currently being done, that it will take a while for people to actually believe it is real! I do, and now I want - no, need - to help convince others...The fact that you are reading this review indicates that you have interest in this field. As such, I recommend that you purchase this book, as well as his new book that discusses advances in the spatial programming of distributed dynamic worlds (which is due to be released soon) and judge for yourself. You will not be disappointed.

Great guide to the most powerful groupware available
This book is long overdue for the millions of GroupWise 5.x users in the world. It uses very down to earth language to explain how to put GW 5.x to work for you and your company. There are many pictures of screens to go along with the text so getting lost is hard to do. The help on calendaring is the most appreciated.
