Not JUST for the NEWLY diagnosed!
I have been dealing with my Type 2 diabetes for about 5 years and I recently ordered this book ..and I learned more from it than from anywhere since I was diagnosed. This is a clear, accurate, and extremely informative book. I go back and re read parts of it often and it has really made a big difference for me.. This is a disease that is difficult to understand correctly, even if you have had it a while, like I have. The up-to-date research behind this book is obvious and it is presented in a truly intelligent and articulate manner. Ms. Becker totally understands type 2 diabetes, and has been extremely helpful in my understanding of it too. How I wish I had had this book when I was first diagnosed - even just the title of the first chapter "It's not your fault" is so important - it allowed me to let go of some of the guilt and self reproach I had. No one ever told me that before! This book is *essential* for all newly diagnosed Type 2's and for the NOT SO NEWLY diagnosed too! You will have a whole new understanding of type 2 diabetes as well as empathetic support and clear information about how to help manage your diabetes. A great book!

Highly recommended for all newly diagnosed
Having just learned that I have type 2 diabetes, I couldn't ask for a better book to refer to than THE FIRST YEAR. The book is written from the first days, weeks, and months and the order is perfect for what (at least) I have been going through. Becker understands that the reader doesn't really want to get too deep in details about the illness but tells enough that anyone can get a better picture as to what is going on with their body.

The book is broken down by living and learning. One section that I found very informative is about the meters. I had no idea that they are affected by elevation. I travel to a mountainous area every year and needed to know this.

I can't say enough about this book. Anyone who is newly diagnosed with this disease should get this book and get information your doctor or educator may not tell you.

A good book for a new diabetic
I bought this book the day I was diagnosed as a Type 2 diabetic, along with two other texts. This one was far more comprehensive and better indexed. Even now that my diagnosis has changed to Type 1 (LADA), I still turn to it daily as a reference. It has detailed information about the various tests that are being done in the early stages that was invaluable to me when my pcp said I was too old to be type 1, but I didn't have any of the known risk factors for type 2.

I'd strongly recommend this book for any adult newly diagnosed with diabetes. I haven't found anything comprable for Type 1, as yet.

Insulin-Dependent Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Adul
This is the best book I have found on type 1 diabetes. I was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 23. This book has tons of information on how to better manage my diabetes. I highly recommend this book.

Excellent resource for ID adults too
When someone is first diagnosed with diabetes, it can be an overwhelming experience. There is so much information on the market, and much of it can be quite unnerving especially if the diabetes book emphasizes possible complications from the disease. Dr. Hanas' book is very light-hearted and upbeat, and emphasizes, rather, the means to manage the disease. Inherent in diabetes is the requirement that the patient manage his or her own diabetes on a daily basis---being his or her own doctor in a sense. This book provides the tools and tips to understand and manage the disease. A wealth of information, and an excellent resource.

--An adult diabetic

An outstanding book, (hopefully soon translated to Chinese)
I recommend to all my young patients with diabetes.

A light at the end of the tunnel
This book was recommended by my endocrinologist. It explains everything in an easy to read and understand manner. Just where I had questions was an answer that appeared to be waiting for me!!

This book works! The advice is sound and simple. Put it to the test and you will note be disappointed. Through daily excersize and cutting back on portion size, I have lost over 25 pounds!

A great resource
This is a fantastic book. I highly recommend it for anyone who has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and also for anyone living with someone with diabetes. What is most refreshing about the book is that it is really a practical guide for healthy living. It clearly explains the interactions of food and exercise and alcohol and overall lifestyle, and how these components work together to affect blood sugar. It also answers questions related to diabetes in specific populations--kids, pregnant women, and older people. With so much information out there promoting fad diets and supplements, it is great to have a resource like this to debunk the myths and give the straight story.

An Awesome Reference!
I would recommend this book to professionals as well as non-professionals living and/or working with diabetes. As a social worker working with families living with diabetes, I found this book extremely informational and it increased my knowledge and understanding of many aspects of diabetes in an easy-to-read and easy-to-follow format. I would recommend this book to anyone with diabetes or with a child with diabetes.

Diabetes 2 Complete Food Management Program
I don't have Diabetes but anyone would really benefit from reading this because weight control, blood pressure and heart health are about everyone's health!

Recommend it to your library?
An important academic tome but also an exciting story. The homepage for this book has many illustrations reflecting the excitement of Stein and Pelliot in Central Asia recovering ancient texts from walled up cave temples and bringing them to Paris and London. This book takes certain philosophical texts of Nagarjuna and makes them readable and accessible. It is good to see that the treasures brought to western collections so long ago are not forgotten but scholars of Jamieson's caliber carefully work their way through the material and publish it. It is rather like the archaeologists who love to dig and produce finds but put off writing up the work. But if no one finishes these things who is to know about them. A great book!

A Wonderful Tome For Scholars and Novices Alike
Prof. Jamieson has written a book which provides translation and commentary on Nagarjuna's Verses on the Great Vehicle and the Heart of the Dependent Origination. The text will provide new understanding and insights for the knowledgeable reader, with enough background information and notes to allow an interested newcomer to also benefit. This is a rare feat, especially in a book that is unfailingly useful and intelligently crafted.

Unlike Jamieson's other work, "The Perfection of Wisdom" this book does not contain illustrations from the Cambridge University manuscripts (of which the author is keeper). Its focus is more purely scholarly, and should be considered essential by any interested readers.

Longest title you'll ever see!
What a great book!

At first it looks pretty serious and unapproachable, but here is what I recommend. Start on page 149, the Background chapter. Then read the texts, the words of Nagarjuna, starting on page 7. You'll be surprised how much is approachable without a knowledge of Sanskrit, Tibetan, and Buddhist philosophy.

As the Dalai Lama's translator says on theback cover, "A remarkable example of what a combination of Sanskrit and Tibetan scholarship can do to illuminate the meaning of ancient Buddhist texts."

Everyone is reading Jamieson's Perfection of Wisdom, but actually this Nagarjuna book has a lot more to it, greater depth, less glossy. And it is guaranteed to be the book with the longest title on your shelves! :-) On the BBC interview this book was not even mentioned. It may not be as trendy and fashionable in London literary circles, but it is my preferred Jamieson book.

Whimsically Humorous Satire Done Right
Don't let the title of this book fool you. It is a well-written, hilarious account of psycho-babble gone beserk, told in the form of a how-to manual for pet owners. Spoofs many of our modern manias. Great fun. Highly recommended.

Ha ha ha! Comedy book of the year!
My teacher's friend wrote this book, and I'm good friends with my teacher so I've heard much about about this book. The most funny part is not the book, it's that people actually think that it's a real guide to boosting your pet's self-esteem! Ha ha ha. Great book. No doubt about it, it's a must-read.

Hedges hits the ball out of the park with this one....
This book was written back in 1996 and boy didn't Hedges call it right? Many of those people who hung their hopes on a J-O-B now find themselves out of work and attacked Hedges for this book and it's predecessor, "Who Stole The American Dream", are probably wishin they had listened to Hedges instead of attacking him.The very popular Rich Dad series of books is interestingly sending out the same message only to a larger audience---you must go from employee to self employed if you want to succeed. The best and fairest boss that you will ever have is the one you see every morning in the mirror.I also recommend "Who Stole The American Dream", "Cash Flow Quadrant", "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" and "Wave 4."

Why your job "vehicle" ain't going where you think it is!
A great book to learn why Jobs = slavery and Self-employed = Freedom and that it's your choice as to which direction you go. And why. And what to do about it.

A great book with a simple idea that most Americans never realize.

I've been free from a job for years now. I just wish I'd had this book to read when I got out of college. I would have started my action plan to freedom sooner. Now I help others "plan their escape" by consulting them on how to become free by starting their own business. If I weren't there to guide them, I'd toss 'em this book instead.

Extremely motivational!!
This book is great for anyone thinking about starting their own business. If you have any insecurities about leaving the world of jobism, they will all disappear after reading this book.

Great for Beginners
When my husband was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, I knew nothing about diabetes or what to do to help. I purchased 3 books and then 3 more. This book was the greatest help to me. Ms. Hiser explains enough, and then she tells you how to handle this condition. Her suggestions were so reasonable and explained in a way that gives you the confidence to proceed. The recipes in the back are very tasty and easy to prepare. This book is the best of the 6 I have read on this subject, both for information and for practical help with the everyday management of type 2 diabetes. Thank you Ms. Hiser!

Easy to understand, very informative and fun to read.
Ms. Hiser is a gifted writer because she can write about very complecated scientific topics in a way that is not only easy for the average reader to understand, it is fun and entertaining, as well as extremely informative.

I would recommend this all-in-one book to anyone suffering from or at risk for Type II Diabetes, and at Hiser's suggestion, the Mediterranean Diet to anyone who wants to live a long, healthy life!

excellent
I was diagnosed with diabetes about 2 years ago. I have read a number of books on the subject. What I like about this book is that it talks about real food. The dessert recipes are made with real sugar. They are low sugar of course, but a number of the recipes can be fed to company. The book also confirmed something I had recently noticed. If I eat less fat, I can eat more carbohydrates with less effect on my blood sugar. I believe this book would be a great place to start for the newly diagnosed, but it is also a great review book that includes a lot of the newest ideas and theories. In addition, it has the basic understanding that food is good and good food is even better.

Wish I could say, "What a bore...."
What can I say? I agree with Rick that the whole codependency thing is a joke, always was and always will be. I confess too that I give him only four stars as he's part of the profession that has been somewhat responsible for perpetuating the codependency scare.

In reality, codependency is a way of white largely women from relatively affluent backgrounds to make themselves into victims. Then they can go to meetings and "help each other out."

Fortunately, I think the "condition's" heyday is long gone. Like the "men's movement," it's now surviving on it's long term "victims."

Anyway, this is fun. Read it and don't bother with the Beattie screeds.

Wow!
I love this book! It's got everything! Humor, Psychology, Co-dependent-bashing, Politics, Wit, Humor, Lore, Wisdom, Humor, Sarcasm, Not-so-common sense, and on and on. What a gem is Rick Goodner and his book, Co-dependent...What a Bore...

Co-dependent...What a Bore and Other Clinical Observations
Even if you don't subscribe to Mr. Goodner's doctrine, which is so uncommonly sensitive, this book is a GREAT READ! (You will laugh aloud, even hysterically at one point.)

Full of daring witticism and intellectual perceptions, this book will jar the senses, especially in the professional world, I think.

Thank you for caring, Mr. Goodner. Will you be my personal spiritual guru?
