gritty
a hard-hitting story that packs a punch, t davis bunn certainly delivers in this fast-paced political thriller

one of the best!
T. Davis Bunn can be counted on to do his research on any of his books which enables the reader to learn about an issue, while at the same time, being totally entertained. I was fascinated by the world of traders who trade millions in one day and how that affects the world's economy. It was so suspenseful, I could not put this book down. Best of all, it was tasteful. As a Christian, there was nothing about this book that offended me. In fact, just the opposite was true. I was inspired by anothers intention to make a difference.

Hourglass of Lost Sleep
T. Davis Bunn keeps getting better. Wow! I thought he'd found his niche with "The Great Divide" (his legal thriller), but this book of political and financial intrigue raises the standard even higher. I'm not a big stocks and funds enthusiast, but Bunn manages to create a suspenseful and well-researched plot that hooked me early on. He works in a credible idea of dealing with Third World debt that I particularly found interesting. Beyond his obvious knowledge of the subject, Bunn creates believable characters and writes with a narrative flair that I personally love. His story is complex and maybe too intertwined for some to delve into, but I couldn't get enough.

As the title of this review suggests, I did lose sleep finishing this book. But the title is stolen from Bunn's own writing. "Jackie's eyelids felt coated with shards from the hourglass of lost sleep." It's writing such as this, passionate and imaginative, that make the political and financial arena come alive. Jackie and Wynn, the two protaganists, are complex characters whom I came to care for. Although the spiritual lessons are muted and few, Bunn works in heartfelt and very real spiritual thoughts without seeming preachy.

With a recent batch of superlative novels by Christian authors("When Heaven Weeps" by Ted Dekker and "The List" by Robert Whitlow, to name a few), I must include "Drummer in the Dark" as one of my favorites.

Just Another Budget Book
Another budget book that won't help you at all if you have big debt problems (The author admits this himself.)

The Bill Buster "System" in this book works only if you already have sufficient income to cover your bills.

Bill Busters Book Review
After reading Bill Busters it became increasingly clear that I have applied many of the same disciplines in my own personal management of money. I think the beauty of the money mangement tips is that everyone can identify with them. The book is a "Back to Basics" approach to paying bills and managing your money rather than spending your money and trying to play "catch up" to pay bills. It is a short read with plenty of fire power that one can immediately apply to helping you gain control of your finances.

Bill Busters is a hit!
I think this book is filled with practical and easy to use advise for any family, no matter the income level. It is an approach that can be implemented and put into use immediately! The result is that families can have a sense of empowerment over their finances instead of their finances keeping them hostage. Mr. Barretto has written a book that is sure to be a winner. Thank you! Solid, but somewhat dated
Though Third World debt does not currently appear on the public radar screen, it continues to concern Wall Street power-brokers and ad-hoc groupings of conscience, such as Jubilee 2000. Mc Ewan's book, though
somewhat dated, provides invaluable background on sources of the problem and prospects for something more than temporary bandaid solutions.

The text is distinguished by a particularly lucid account of the 1945 Bretton Woods Agreement, the international conference that institutionalized American hegemony over global economics during the lengthy post-war period. By fixing exchange rates around the dollar as international currency, US bankers were able - as the text makes clear - to displace many domestic problems onto foreign economies. This is a crucial aspect of so-called American prosperity that few well-meaning citizens are aware of, but which has affected overseas relations in sometimes decisive ways.

In its dynamics, Latin American debt appears to be particularly unpayable. Growth in south of the border economies - as McEwan shows - has been critically undermined by excessive capital export required to service International Monetary Fund (IMF) loans. This international banker, now the target of world-wide protest, imposes payback conditions that include curtailed government expenditures and increased foreign exports, measures that drain these peasant economies of whatever growth potential is left over. Particularly disturbing is the informed observation that so long as these basic terms of trade remain unaltered, debt foregiveness, like aspirin on a cancer, can produce little more than temporary relief. People of conscience need to read this book.

Very broad and basic review of how credit works
Provides very little detail. Overly simplistic.

Full of great tips and information!
This book is full of great tips and ideas that helped me understand just what my credit report was saying. There were a few items on there that scared me because they weren't my debts. I followed the instructions in D.J.'s book and got it cleared up at all three credit bureaus within a few weeks. Just in time for us to get our home loan finally approved so we could buy our first home.

It's easy to read and to understand. None of that jargon and special code words that our loan officer used when we applied for our home loan. Definitely a good buy if you're having credit problems or need help with money management.

Inaccurate Information Makes Me Suspicious
This book make me nauseous. The tone, the message ... could hardly believe what I was reading. When I got to the page where Hilton states that credit scores (FICO) range from 0-1000 and are issued by TRW, I knew I couldn't trust this author. Come on, Mr. Hilton! Do your research. TRW has not existed as a credit bureau for at least 10 years and credit scores range from about 350-950 max depending on the credit bureau issuing. Isn't it funny how this clown nit picks and searches for the tiniest little error to have grounds to sue! sue! sue! (recommended repeatedly throughout the book) ... but can make inaccurate statements in his book like it's no big deal. I hope someone sues! sues! sues! him for writing this ridiculous book. Do not waste your money on this one. For sure I won't donate it to my library. Someone might accidently read it.

Sue predatory credit granters --cost them money!
Hilton's book is excellent and his advice is good. Predatory credit granters ought to be sued and sued often. Don't be misled by the bad reviews posted here by -- guess who? -- minions of the credit industry. Hilton's advice is to simply turn the tables on your creditors -- sue them before they sue you. What after all, do you have to lose? If it doesn't pan out, well, there's always bankruptcy.

Light at the end of the tunnel
Mr. Hilton has given me some hope. I only wish I knew how to contact him for more info.

The Role of the Paris Club in Managing Debt Problems
Published in Paperback by Princeton Univ Intl Finance (December, 1985)

Role Paris Club Glossed
This book is a succinct statement of the role and funcitoning, policies and procedures of the Paris Club as distinct from other clubs such as the London Club. For the most part I would recommend it with the qualification that readers should do more research on a major part of this book, namely, its discussion of conditionality. Conditionality is a set of criteria to which a borrowing nation must comply, in whole or in part, in order to be treated as "creditworthy". The 'prime directive' of official banks such as the IMF and World Bank is not necessarily to close the gap in a nation's balance of payments, not to remove the deficit, but rather to transform, littlt by little, command economies [i.e., socialist ones] to market economies. Conditionality as stated in the book under review leaves out the main conditions with which a borrowing nation must comply: elimination of consumer subsidies; deregulation of imports and exports, privatization of public sectory enterprizes, elimination of tariffs on imported goods, making it easy for foreign firms to settle into a borrowing nation, making bank interest rates mover closer to the rate of inflation, devaluation of the nation's currency. The treatment of 'conditionality' in this book glosses over the meat on this table. I did not expect this gloss because the book came under the auspices of Princeton University's Department of Economics. I was quite disappointed. The real role of official banks is political - not economic. Economics used politically is what this global world is all about, and Princeton should not gloss over this aspect of transnational development in a post socialist world.
