Concentrate on what cannot lie... The reviewsMax Allan Collins paid attention to the important aspects of the show, but also did his research when it comes to Las Vegas. I'm a Las Vegas native, and it was nice to see something that actually paid attention to the city's topography. Movies like Con-Air and the new Ocean's 11 chose not to portray the city as it really is, and that bugs me. Collins got most of it right.
The characters were right on as well. I could hear Grissom, Catherine, Warrick, Sara, Nick, Greg, and Brass in my head when they were saying something in the book. So, either I have little voices running amok in my head, or Collins paid attention to the show.
Well done, and a must read for anyone who likes the show, or who lives in Las Vegas...

Ahh...okay.I've always been disappointed that Jeff Greene, who is possibly my favorite character in all of literary fiction, is never fleshed out beyond A Solitary Blue. The later Dicey books make him out to be some sort of young god. Kind of disappointing.
Another WinnerI recommend this book to all the young and young at heart.

Excellent for historical perspective but of little use todayIt is, however, useless to try to learn current playing skills from this book. It is simply too far out of date -- like trying to learn software engineering techniques from a book published around the same time, in the early 1960's. The state of the art has changed dramatically.
Buy it only if you have already learned about the game and want to gain some perspective on the origins of card counting. For that, it's a "10".
Must have book for beginner blackjack playersI used the basic strategy and the high/low count methods taught in THIS BOOK only, and stuck strictly to the strategy one weekend. I started with $250.00 betting $10 per hand and won over $20,000 in 17 hours. By the end I was playing three hands at a time of $250 minimum on each hand. I was amazed at how well the strategy worked for me.
The book is wonderful and entertaining even if you don't plan to play any. The stories are great. Highly recommend it.
FantasticIf you like this book I would also recommend getting "Bringing the house down" which is a book about some people that utilized Mr. Thorps techniques to win a lot of money if vegas.

Reader Beware!
Not horribly BAD, just not good either...And, I hate to be too English-majory, BUT...
WHO edited this book? Anybody? The number of typos, as well as all the times that the wrong form of "it's" or "their" is used, is just embarrassing. The biggest editing problem is the persistant pronoun confusion, with all the sentences that say "She was so happy to see her that she called out her name and she smiled as she poured her a glass of wine and..."
I know the spelling and grammar stuff are picky complaints. Maybe if the book had been *interesting*, my attention would have been drawn to the story rather than the typos.
A great read whether you collect antiques or notThere are great metaphors about how it's hard to tell a real treasure from a fake in choosing antiques as in relationships. The writing style is fresh, at times beautifully poetic, honest and with a wonderful redeeming quality about human nature. I think men and women would enjoy this book. Reading it provides a great escape, and the setting in the antiques business is fascinating.
Does anybody know of any other good books by this author? He has great style and freshness, and I hope we get to see much more from him.

Adventurous Shopper's Delight!I'm not as familiar with Paris, but if the Paris section is even close to being as accurate and useful as the London section, it will save shopping time and hassle across the channel, as it will in London.
This is not "the" book for your trip if you need a complete guide book. If you like antiques and markets, however, you will love this book.

Life was meant to be lived;and CJ sure knew how....I assume a lot of these stories are fictional ,in whole or in part, but are probably based on some of the authors experiences.
What I have come to like about McMurtry's books is that they are all so different from one another;and I think this one is the most different.
If there is any truth about this character, there should a law against it;nobody should be allowed to have that much fun--not one person.
Sharp writing, wonderful insights, a period piece...I picture Cadillac Jack as looking like Kinky Friedman or Richard Boone, narrating the story in a Texas accent, boots propped up on the liar's bench, eyes arcing under the cowboy hat in a bet-you-can't-top-this-one slant.
What a pleasant surprise! An amazing character. An amazing yarn.
