REQUIRED READING
Anyone who wants to understand the complexities and nuances
of oil, which is the lifeblood of our economic wellbeing must read three books: The Seven Sisters, The Prize, and ON A CLEAR DAY. Mr. Campbell's book is a logical and timely discussion that takes over where earlier authors have left off or just did not elablorate.

Understanding the Middle East Conflicts
This book thoroughly covers the basics of the history of the Middle East while giving a better understanding to the reader of the complexities of the reasoning of each side.

Mr. Campbell begins with a historical balanced perspective of each of the religions of Abraham: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. He follows with details of the conflicts among these three religions.

The final chapters examine the current situation in the Middle East, particularly in Iraq, and make specific recommendations how the US can best resolve the dilemma of our involvement. Suggestions for decreasing the US dependency on Middle East oil, reducing our military requirements and political solutions for the Israel - Palestine conflict are outlined for consideration.

I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to gain a more thorough understanding of the history and conflicts of the region.

Great Book for Basic Knitting Machine Principles
This book covers all type of knitting machine basics. Although the machines are older (1970's),it gives a great description of what is occurring with the needles to form the various fabrics and stitches. I particularly like the hosiery machine chapters. It describes the double cylinder knitting machine action in easy to understand, clear, consise terms. I have used this book a lot as a great reference on basic knitting.

Good for young girls
My daughter is a big fan of the American Girls series. I think it's great to get her interested in history, so this series about young LDS girls from the past promised to be a great idea. This is the first book I bought from the series. My daughter likes it a lot. Sadie is young girl from Pleasant Grove Utah in 1856. Her parents are struggling to teach their children good values and to live their religion. After her parents go to General Conference in Salt Lake, Sadie is left to run the household and take care of her brothers and sisters. It's a lot harder than it sounds! I think this book will make girls appreciate how different pioneer life really was.

Four Feet in History
In the days before motorized vehicles and tractors, city businesses and rural farms were powered by horses. Draft Horses, Light Horses and everything in between were harnessed to the plow, express wagons (think UPS with horses) and even houses. Charles ("Chappie") Fox sheds a spotlight on all aspects of the horses of yesteryear; from the building of the vehicles, the equipment and stables, to the hitches used for advertising to the circus, farm and fire horses. Take a nostalgic look back or discover a little bit of history with this Beautiful! book- full of illustrations, paintings and photographs, along with well written and informative captions and commentary from a man who knows the business inside and out. My copy is well worn and well cherished! A fantastic gift for any horseperson, regardless of their chosen discipline.

A Must Read for Business Leaders and Consultants
This book is wonderful. Unlike many business books which take one very simple concept and drive it into the ground over 400 pages, Wharton on Dynamic Competitive Strategy has several (17) discrete topics which are interlinked through common themes. Need to understand applications of game theory to strategy formulation? Want to understand how to structure scenario analysis for a working session with a group of business unit directors? This book will help you understand some very academic concepts with very real, material impact when used properly.

This is also a great book for MBA students who want to understand a topic before taking to a whole class.

One final point, the caliber of the authors is incredible. Each author is writing about his/her specific areas of expertise, and the topics are extremely timely.

These are my opinions alone and not necessarily those of my employer.

A well-chosen set of essays
A well-chosen set of essays is compiled, based on a 4-level framework: i)Analyze the competitive environment, ii)Anticipate competitor's actions & reactions, iii) Formulate Dynamic Strategies, iv) Choose among alternative strategies. The book provides a great way to update one's strategy knowledge.
But I find 'Mastering Strategy: The Complete MBA Companion in Strategy' by Financial Times Editors to be a better book with greater depth and broader spectrum.

Strategy research from the world's top business school
Both editors are marketing professors at The Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania), which is the world's leading business school (BusinessWeek and Financial Times). George Day is well-known for his market-driven strategy, while David Reibstein is one of the leading scholars in the field of competitive marketing strategy. The book is split in 4 parts, each consisting of 3-to-5 stand-alone chapters.

Part I - Understanding Advantages in a Changing Competitive Environment - discusses competitive arenas, competitor analysis, and competitive advantage. The first two chapters expand largely on Michael Porter's (Harvard Business School) frameworks, whereby the other two chapters introduce approaches to include policy and technology trends into the strategic planning process.

The aim of Part II - Anticipating Competitors' Actions - is to get inside the heads of competitors. Chapters 5 and 6 explain the possible use of the game theory within competitive strate!gy and strategic decision making. Chapter 7 builds on these chapters to integrate the economic frame (chapter 5), the behavioral frame (chapter 6), with an coevolution frame. The final chapters of this part introduce frameworks and approaches to understanding competitor response and competitive relationships.

Part III - Formulating Dynamic Competitive Strategies - builds on the first two parts and introduces approaches to designing strategies. It introduces reactive strategies, preemptive strategies, signaling opportunities and uses, competitive positioning, and antitrust constraints (which is increasingly important to companies).

In Part IV - Choosing Among Alternative Competitive Strategies - the three chapters introduce methods and frameworks for choosing the right strategy. Chapter 15, in which conjoint analysis is combined with scenario analysis, is perhaps the most complicated chapter of the book. Part IV also introduces the possibilities to use simulation !tests for analyzing and testing strategies.

Although this book is named "Wharton on Dynamic Competitive Strategy", there are various chapters from other academic institutions. Each chapter is an excellent piece of work and can be read on a stand-alone basis. For beginners in the strategic field I recommend chapters 1 and 2 highly. The book is written in business US-English.

Outstanding content that is understandable w/ real examples
I was very impressed with the content of the book and the way the author presents material in an understandable and approachable way. After reading the book I have already started to use the strategy of buying leap options on companies before the split date of the stock. I recently purchased options on Rambus and made over 400% return on a minimal investment. I was able to personally meet Mr. Larson recently at a local seminar and was very impressed with his attitude and enthusiasm for helping traders manage their own portfolios and outperform the market. I would highly recommend this book to traders of all experience levels.

Break free from the buy and hold strategy.
Trading Stocks Online has great opened my mind to changing my the way I think about investing. It is hard to break free from the buy and hold mentality. Investing should treated like a business. Your in business to make money; if your not making money then why are you in business?

The book starts off by helping the reader develop a dream and then explains the basics on how to protect those dreams by running your business, placing stop losses, and knowing when to get out. This book also has wonderful insight in to strategies that are easy to understand and implement.

It's Your Money: The E*TRADE Step-by-Step Guide to Online Investing
Published in Paperback by HarperBusiness (20 June, 2000)
Author: Christos M. Cotsakos
Amazon base price: $16.00
Used price: $0.01
Collectible price: $0.99

If you're curious about investing but have been too afraid to try, or if you've wondered about the hype surrounding online trading but were unsure how to plug in, It's Your Money is for you. In it, Christos Cotsakos--the man who put online trading on the map--leads you step-by-step into the brave new world of Internet trading. The book begins literally at the beginning, with criteria for buying a computer and selecting an Internet service provider, moves on through investment basics, and finally offers sophisticated strategies for analyzing individual stocks. Ever wondered what the NASDAQ was but didn't want to show your ignorance? Or day trading? Read on. In a clear, conversational style, Cotsakos answers all the key questions, from what growth stocks are, to why bonds are really not boring, to the difference between front-end and rear-end loads (mutual funds, that is).

Once you've grasped the basics, you're on your way to opening your own Internet trading account. The beauty of managing and investing money online is that you can be your own "professional fund manager" (which gives you more power over your money--the author's primary goal here). Cotsakos explains how to research investment opportunities using the World Wide Web, and how to analyze and interpret what you've found in order to meet your own goals. He shows how to take advantage of such online perks as portfolio tracking and computer alerts for important changes in particular investments. And he introduces advanced topics for the braveheart investor--IPOs, day trading, and extended-hours trading. The Cotsakos approach is nevertheless a prudent one. The emphasis is on using the computer's analytical tools to create a well-conceived financial plan, rather than on simply learning how to ride the helter-skelter world of day trading, for example. As a primer for investing online, this book is a great resource. Be forewarned, however: Cotsakos does take every opportunity to mention his own financial-services company, E*Trade. There are others out there, so take a leaf out of his own book and do your research--online, of course--before you sign up. --Lesley Reed

An Advertisement for E*TRADE
This book was completely unfulfilling. It's hard to imagine a book that could be less useful for investors. Perhaps Costakos assumes that his potential customers are simpletons who don't know how the Internet works. Even so, his consistent proselytizing for his own online brokerage will annoy both neophytes and experienced traders alike.

Online Financial Control
Christos Cotsakos, the Chairman and CEO of E*Trade is once again touting personal control over one's financial destiny. In this book he covers all aspects of using the internet for personal finances including how to buy a computer, open an on-line brokerage and bank account, do research, and invest in various instruments.

Christos shows how the internet has revolutionarized the financial world and how the individual investor can take advantage of it and for the first time be able to take full charge of your own money.

I like this book very much and I have always been a proponent of E*Trade. Buy it! Read it! and profit from it! Buy some E*Trade stocks! EGRP is going to the moon! Have your anti-gravity gapping belts ready!

E*TRADE Boss Tells All
This may be the first, and is certainly one of the first books to spell out the process of online investing, and as such it is a valuable resource for the "layman" investor. As a reader with minimal knowledge of the stock market and online transactions, I was particularly impressed on three counts. First, Cotsakos has written the entire volume in an flowing, easily understood style, sort of as though he were just talking you through the process. This is helpful for those of us who don't really understand much of the typical jargon, and it also makes it easier to remain interested in what could be a very dry subject. Second, he goes back to the very basics of computer usage (purchasing the right machine with the right capabilities, etc.), which still could be quite mysterious for some people. By doing this he has anticipated and already answered some of our potential questions. And third, the book really progresses in a step-by-step fashion, with refreshers at the end of chapters, and many helpful side-notes. I think the final thing to recommend this book is that although it is, of course, written from the standpoint of E*Trade (an online trading provider), Cotsakos has avoided making it one big commercial for his company. This book is a "must read" for anyone who wants to start trading online, and also for those who already trade in this way and want to hone their skills, regardless of the service provider they choose.
