The perfect compromise
If you are a teacher struggling to make grammar interesting and relevant to your students, while also trying to follow an established curriculum (and not work yourself to death in the process) do not hesitate to buy this book! I am a first-year teacher struggling to find a compromise between how I have to teach and how I know I should be teaching--and this book is it! While it appears to be simply a book full of grammar worksheets ('yippie' shouts the administration), it really is a back door to teaching grammar in the context of writing ('woo hoo' exclaims the English teacher). Each exercise is intended to teach concrete grammar rules and skills as well as to apply these new skills to the writing process. It is a collection of the excellent, creative kinds of activities I would come up with myself--if only I had the time!

Money well spent!
I am homeschooling my 9 year old son and this book is a great resource to use. It's humor can't help but add joy and eagerness to the learning process. It's just the spark we needed to get his creative juices flowing when it comes to writing! Lessons are short and to the point with examples that clearly show what the lesson is intended to convey. I'll be using this one for awhile!!

More Grammar Please!
What a great book for teaching grammar. Very anectodal ways to teach grammar to even 8th graders. The book is nicely organized and instructions are clear. The author used a fair amount of creativity to feed grammar to students with a spoonful of sugar! Definitely worth having in a library.

FANTASTIC!
This book is a "wonderment." And a "wonderment" is a thing of wonder. Don't bypass this book if you are anal. Anals have super clean houses and are frequently
nurses. They start sniffing the air for dirt as soon as you walk in. The author calls
them "clean-o-holics." This is such a great book. It's like being at Disneyland.
We first go to section 1 (there are six sections). Here we may be in for some disappointments. The author won't say it. But she really hypothesizes that you
can't have (this is hard to grasp) a user-friendly house or dwelling unless you have
a minimum of some time-management or organizational skills. Now she doesn't
write separate books on time-management or organization, but she does give the
bare minimum of these skills. That includes calendars and "to-do" lists. She does
say that you can go right to the other sections to learn. But the implications are
what I just stated. Sections two through four give us all the stuff that we need.
The messy bathroom. The messy kitchen. And so on. This takes up a lot of room
in the book. About 180 pages of this 350-page book. Section 4 is about "troubleshooting." The stuck door, bugs, the plunger. Section 5 is about safety.
Burglars, bad food, accidents. Section 6 is "The Part of Tens." Basically everything
that we didn't cover in the previous five sections. One of the points that I am trying to make is that this book is even good for the "clean-o-holic." Because they can find out how much they don't need to do. Thank you. I hope that I have helped

Martha Stewart, move over!
Why didn't my mother tell me all this? I believe that reading this book should be required along with every marriage license, lease and mortgage agreement. This book is a natural for a bridal shower gift, or anyone just setting up housekeeping. I'm giving it to everyone on my gift list for Christmas!

You need this book, even if you think you don't.
A friend gave me this book as a housewarming present and I thought she was nuts because I've had my own home for 30 years. What could I possibly learn from a book about keeping house? As it turns out, plenty! I cannot believe how many hints, ideas and shortcuts I've used from the book -- on taking care of my house, clothes, car, pets. Mine is by my bedside, so I can read a little passage on how to get wax out of carpeting or iron a shirt efficiently before I go to bed. Lest you think I'm a cleaning fanatic, I am not. My house is littered with papers and junk because I work full-time. What this book has done is show me how to use shortcuts and techniques that make keeping things under control easier and less tedious. I salute Janet Sobesky and the publishers. If the whole series is as useful as this book, I'm buying them all.

How does this book compare? Amazingly well!
I have just finished "How Do You Compare? 12 Simple Tests..." and I found it to be informative, enlightening, and entertaining -- a book doesn't get much better than that!

Each of the sections provided such interesting information -- both anectdotal and analytical -- that I found it hard to put the book down. And the tests! The great thing about the tests was that, with any degree of self-honesty, a reader could not help but get a very clear picture of their own personality.

Everything was explained clearly. The text was easy to read. All in all, one of the best books I have read in the genre. I highly recommend it.

Interesting and challenging
Ordinarily, I don't read and review self-improvement books. I've read quite a few them in the past and found most of them wanting. Sure, now and then a decent self-help book will come off the press and even I have found it helpful. Most of them, however, are too much the same and intended to either make the author a lot of money or create a new fad, with some self-promoting guru raking in the fame and fortune.

So, when I was offered the opportunity to review "How Do You Compare?", I was hesitant. I wasn't sure I'd be interested in what still another author had to say about improving oneself. But my curiosity was peaked when I learned that the book included twelve simple tests which were based on more complicated tests which had actually been developed and tested themselves by experts in the field of experimental psychology. Since I have a background in testing, evaluation, and quantitative analysis, plus have taken a number of courses in psychology at both the undergraduate and graduate level, I decided, what the heck, I'd read the book and maybe even write a review about it.

"How Do You Compare?" is a very readable book and, in addition to the twelve tests provided, contains a lot of interesting information about the nature, history, and development of various types of evaluation, including intelligent tests, creativity tests, social skills tests, and personality tests in general. Spaced throughout the book, and making the adventure more enjoyable than usual for books in this genre, are cartoons related to the discussion at hand and textual tidbits providing the reader with little-known facts such as the relationship between Graham crackers and sexual behavior. I knew about that one, having heard about Dr. Graham many years ago, but I'd bet most people aren't aware of that peculiar, practically useless, yet very interesting, factoid.

The structure of the book is very simple: get some background information about a part of your mind, take a little test to learn something about yourself, and then compare yourself to thousands of others who have taken the test. The tests are divided into three main sections and a final "big picture" questionnaire with the title, "How satisfied are you with your personality?" The first section includes a brief intelligence test and a test for creativity. The second section includes four tests or sets of questions to check up on your social skills. The third section, which deals with the subject of motivation, includes tests about happiness, cheerfulness, peak experiences, locus of control, and even, -- wouldn't you know it? -- a cheerfulness test for a friend to complete about you.

Most people who take tests such as these are interested in three primary points: How did I score on the test?; What do my answers mean?; How did others score on the test? The author goes into some detail to help the reader, or in this case, the test-taker, deal with these questions. He raises a number of issues related to one's personality profile and suggests possibilities for self-improvement under headings like: Do you have a messy desk?; Can you buy creativity?; Do you drink for inspiration?; Is your date attractive at the end of the night?; and What is your happy life expectancy? -- intriguing questions, these, and the results of the research into them by behavioral scientists may surprise you.

Of course, since the book is within the self-improvement genre, it must also provide some practical advice to help those who want indeed to improve themselves. This it does. At various places throughout the text, the author gives suggestions, both positive and negative, as to how to improve one's performance in life, including the eight ingredients for a successful relationship and, something even I was unaware of, the health benefits of kissing. All my life I thought it was just for fun! Now I know it's healthy, too!

There is one brief discussion the author has in the book that I think especially stands out and I would hope that most of us would pay close attention to it. In the section dealing with intelligence and creativity, he lists what he calls the "creativity killers," those things we say to children, or fail to say, which can impact negatively on a child's ability to become a truly creative individual. As a former educator of young children, I can relate to the importance of this warning.

As self-improvement books go, this one far outdistances most of them I've read. To the credit of the author, and to the advantage of the really serious reader, Williams includes citations for every research paper he mentions so they can be consulted and studied. He also provides an index to the major topics discussed, something not common to books of this type.

Finally, I gladly recommend this book to all who want to learn more about themselves, about how they compare with others, and, above all, how they might go about improving their lives. If you're looking for a self-help book that is based on real scientific research, yet is interesting and fun to read, you'd be hard-pressed to find anything better right now.

Interesting and fun book
A fascinating trip into the world of psychology and relationships, "How Do You Compare" is a joy to read. The text examines several areas where we tend to compare ourselves with others. Some of the areas include intelligence quotient, creativity, healthy relationships, ability as a lover, and even if how happy we are. Included are several short tests to help you understand where you stand in each of the areas followed by an analysis of how you then compare to others in the general population. Each section also contains the results of various research projects. These projects answer questions like whether there is a relationship between tall stature and intelligence? What about a relationship between racism and intelligence, or wearing glasses and intelligence? Can music help you fall in love? "How Do You Compare" is a highly recommended an interesting read.

Easy to Read and Understand
The book is highly recomended for all persons from ages young till adult. The book gives a description of all the 6 major religions and other religions as well and it compares and contrasts all the similarities and differences. Really comes into my mind why Christians, Muslims and Jews are 3 separate religions eventough the basic origin is very much similar, i.e.the notion of Heaven and Hell, the belief in One superior being, Places of worships (Church, Mosque and Synagogue), Holy books (Bible, Quran and Torah)..etc.

Heartfelt applause!
I absolutely LOVE this book! The loving way that these two wonderful men compare and contrast the major religions of the world is beautiful. I think it should be required reading for children AND adults! I ordered several copies to give as gifts to many young people in my life. I can't wait to share this informative and thought provoking book with them. What an incredible step towards tolerance and embracing the different ways we all worship God. Thank you Mssrs. Gellman and Hartman, you have truly blessed us with this book.

Very informative
This book goes into details about the different religions of the world. It describes how they are different but what makes them the same. This book does a good job informing the readers with out including bias remarks or views from one religion of another.

Powerful Little Book that Will Change Women's Lives
This little 5" X 7" book is packed with frustrations, irritations, confusions, and challenges faced by thousands of women who hold two full-time jobs: employee and mother. The magazines and newspapers are filled with stories about the difficulties women wrestle with every day. Women without husbands and/or children face the same issues. The message is clear: gotta be in control!

Control. Organize. Direct. Internalize. Chaos. Responsibility. Stress. Ineffectiveness. Unhappiness. This flow is not going to good places. And that's what has to change. Mary LoVerde takes her readers through the process in a comfortable, conversational "been there" style that will be much-appreciated.

The text is filled with comments, testimonials, emotional expressions and more from a wide range of women. I was amazed at how much was woven into this book to make it a really helpful tool for all those women who have tried to improve their life by tightening their grip. Change comes when you understand that control is often confused with power.

LoVerde suggests that true power comes from six approaches: pose good questions, pay attention, predict your Achilles' Heel, partner with women, pause before judging, and position yourself. The book is filled with compassion. Women who follow the advice will find a new serenity.

Side comment: a lot of men could learn a lot from this book, too. Couples reading it together risk finding a new level of happiness.

delighted by this book
I have heard Mary LoVerde speak and it was a very insightful and touching talk, so I was quite impressed to see how well she transfered this wisdom into writing. This book is funny, very helpful and cleverly written. A delight.

Witty, Enduring Wisdom
Mary's new book transcends platitudes and offers genuinely original suggestions on how we can gain the contentment we seek by letting go of our compulsion to control everything and everyone.
As she points out, the more we try to control life, the more out-of-control we feel. With real-life examples, laugh-out-loud insights, and tangible suggestions; the author shows us how to relax, connect, and enjoy our life as it unfolds instead of rigidly trying to predetermine every outcome.
The book is divided into easy-to-access-and-apply read bytes so you can dip into it and derive value even if you're busy and only have a few minutes to spare. Read it and reap.

How Do We Know When It's God? a Spiritual Memoir

How do we know when it's God? That's a tough question, explains Dan Wakefield, whose memoir gives a painful account of fabricating God's will in order to justify his personal desires and delusions. Wakefield's accounts of stumbling through a brutal "EST" seminar, the soul-snuffing world of Hollywood screenplay writing, and bouts of despair will reassure Christian readers that they can make mistakes (the same ones--over and over again) and still find comfort in faith. "In fact, this memoir of mine could more aptly be titled When Good People Do Bad Things--or at least stupid things, things that hurt themselves and others," Wakefield confesses.

The most painful stories come from Wakefield's failed love affairs and marriages--perhaps because he still seems confused and squeamish when it comes to loving women. Nonetheless, the man has earned his badge of wisdom, mostly because he is not afraid to hold himself up to the light of God honestly. This is a thoroughly engaging memoir, written by an accomplished storyteller, revealing all the blunders humans make when we try to honor (and secretly ghostwrite) the master plan. --Gail Hudson

Average review score:

An amusing and interesting spiritual autobiography
If you are a fan of Indiana-bred novelist and spiritual writer Dan Wakefield, then make sure that you don't pass up this book! Although the title does not acknowledge any "Part 2", this book is actully a follow up to Wakefield's earlier spiritual autobiography "Returning". But whereas "Returning" dealt with the story of Wakefield's coming to faith in God after years as an atheist, this book deals with the up ever-winding Christian journey that Wakefield has lived since then. If you are fan of Wakefield's novels, then this book will give you some real insights as to what he was thinking and living when he wrote "Selling Out" and "Under The Apple Tree" in particular. This book also tells the story of how Wakefield's first novel, "Going All the Way", was made into a movie, with much involvement and enthusiasm from Wakefield himself. The book is quite episodic in its narative, and each chapter seems to move from one crisis and/or triumph to another. My favorite chapter deals with the time that Wakefield attended a supposedly Jung-ian "Post Christian" retreat, which in fact turned out to be nothing short of an anti-Christian brainwashing camp! The way in which Wakefield wisely deals with the pushy "Post Christian" group leaders, and verbally defends his faith in Christ along the way (under the worst of adversity and peer-pressure!), makes for some real page-turning moments! Some traditional Christian readers may be put off by Wakefield's almost brutal honesty in places. He admits to alcohol and drug abuse (although he has since gotten sober). He recounts several unhealthy sexual releationships, with a variety of diverse and willing women, and he is not above using occassional profanity. But if these things do not scare you away, then "How Do We Know When It's God" is well worth your time and money!

an interesting, engaging, honest portrayal of spiritual thir
As always, Dan Wakefield offers us an interesting, engaging, honest portrayal of his spiritual hunger--a craving that both leads him to places of darkness as well as hope. Without self-pity, Wakefield offers his mistakes and shortcomings as part of the pilgrimage of growth. This book, like his others, are candid and refreshing--the perfect read for imperfect pilgrims searching for an authentic voice in the world of spirituality.

A "how not to do it" book definitely worth reading!
Wakefield described this book as "how not to do it", an extremely accurate description. In addition to being very informative, it is an extremely enjoyable read. He leads the reader through all of his victories AND his (many) mistakes and defeats. Although this book doesn't contain all "the answers", I felt so much better just knowing that the spiritual wilderness I am currently traversing has been survived by someone who lived to write about it! Thanks Dan!

How to Build Horsepower ( for those who never thought of it)
Vizard's Book is an excellent reference and text book for anyone who wishes to learn how to maximize the performance of any engine. It is an unnasuming text that does not assume a certain level of Knowledge, yet allows one to stretch and grow with it as one gains knowledge and understanding.

Starting with simplest and cheapest mods and then expanding to more exotic upgrades.

David Vizard also ellaborates on downsides of various upgrades in the from of decreased reliability and or economy.

One downfall to the book is lack of coverage of fuel injection.

Reference in book is to Vol 2, for further info on such systems, yet attempts to locate vol 2 has been unfruitfull

Excellent Overview
This book is a must read for anyone who wants to do any tuning work on their car whatsoever. This is a rare book because the author is actually in possession of a flow bench and chassis dyno which allow him to test all of the ideas presented. He debunks a number of myths about how to actually get more power out of your engine. He also gives some coverage to just about every kind of modification you can make to your engine and gives you an educated opinion about whether or not it is worth your time. The general focus of the book is on American V8's, but I found that all of the informatoin was general enough to apply nicely to my Italian V6s and German inline 4 cylinder cars. The format of the book leaves a little bit to be desired (As do the photos) but the material is so good that it becomes irrelevent. If you are not interested in actually tuning your car but just want to know how it is done, you should still read this book: it's a good one.

One of his best
An outstanding effort by David Vizard. This book contains a lot of info about flow bench work, and air flow in ports. The workings of carburetors, carb sizing, manifold types and where and why they differ. I go back to his books every time I consider making an engine modification.

Really good for things you might have overlooked
So I am not a complete geek, but I spent about four solid months navigating Windows Me for about 4-6 hours a day. After having to re-install my OS after performing an update, I figured that it was time to do some reading.

Most of the info can be found in the interactive help menus, but I feel that it is important to have another source. The book is set up intelligently and has little tips and tricks that you might overlook or forget about when you are trying to figure out why the performance levels are degrading.

A Good Book to learn everything about Win. ME
I am new to computers & find this book very helpful. I am going through it like a text book to learn how to use WIN. ME. I have wished before that there was a book to show how to do everything on a computer & this book sure helps!

great book
I just purchased a computer with the Windows ME operating system. This book was very helpful and easy to understand.

How to Do Everything with Your iMac does just what the title promises, covering all things iMac from setting up your machine to editing QuickTime movies to connecting your iMac to a network. Todd Stauffer, best known as co-host of the TV series Disk Doctors, has written a book that is all things to all iMac users.

Stauffer's attention to detail is what makes this book work. Even relatively simple tasks, such as formatting a text document, receive thorough treatment in his hands. Unlike many books on using the Mac, How to Do Everything doesn't give short shrift to running business applications. Stauffer devotes ample time to working with spreadsheets and databases, as well as Intuit's Quicken personal finance software, instead of perpetuating the myth that the iMac is only for working with graphics or surfing the Internet.

Stauffer does, of course, place particular weight on working online, taking you through the nuts and bolts of encoding e-mail attachments and backing up files on the Web--an important bit of advice given the iMac's notorious lack of a storage device.

Whether you're a computer novice or an experienced Mac user looking to get more out of your computer, you'll find a wealth of helpful information in this book. How to Do Everything with Your iMac should rest on your desk right next to your tangerine-colored computer. --John Moore

Very helpful
I bought this book 2 days after purchasing my IMac, and boy was it helpful! It takes you through all the steps you need to REALLY get your machine up and running! This is a must have for people who are new to the Mac and work on PCs mostly.

DO NOT Buy an iMac Without Buying This Book, Too!
I have had my Indigo iMac for 1 1/2 years now. I bought
several beginner books, being a computer 'newbie'.
This book is so fantastic (it's big), but even if you don't
have time to read it cover-to-cover, you can jump into
any section you want to learn about, and you will never
feel frustrated learning to use the computer. It is fantastic,
everything concise, clear, and above all the MOST
comprehensive iMac manual I have found! A must have,
just amazing. It's got it all!

Good "How To Book".
Just as the title says this book provides you with instructions on how to do virtually everything with your iMac (hey, somebody can probably think of a useful iMac job it does'nt address). "Todd" starts off with setup and goes from there, even presenting options in peripherals (external drives), and software (utilities). This book is basic enough to be understood by a new iMac user and goes far enough to probably help a "techie". I initially bought this book to help me get to know the machine before it was delivered--now I keep my copy next to my iMac for reference.
