How Do Dinosaurs Say Good Night?
Published in Misc. Supplies by Merrymakers Distribution (August, 2001)
Authors: Jane Yolen and Mark Teague
Amazon base price: $16.00
Used price: $11.74

"How does a dinosaur say good night when Papa comes in to turn off the light? Does a dinosaur slam his tail and pout? Does he throw his teddy bear all about? Does a dinosaur stomp his feet on the floor and shout: 'I want to hear one book more!'? DOES A DINOSAUR ROAR?" Most certainly not. Dinosaurs give their mommies and daddies big hugs and kisses, tuck their tales in, and whisper "Good night!"

Every sleepy little dinosaur will recognize the tricks of the trade in these bedtime shenanigans. The chuckle factor is sky-high here, with giant, full-page pictures of cleverly identified Tyrannosaurus rexes, triceratopses, and Pteranodons. A variety of human mothers and fathers trying to put their dinosaur children to bed will bring the point home that the story may have something to do with human kid behavior as well. This good-natured nighttime book is sure to be a winner (even though it might inspire a few noisy dinosaur antics), especially as it's written by Jane Yolen, prolific Caldecott Medalist author of Owl Moon. Yolen and Mark Teague have teamed up to create a fun, silly, playful read-aloud. (Ages 3 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

Undeniably cute
This is really a cute book. The illustrations are warm and friendly. I like how subtly the names of the dinosaurs appear ... sometimes spelled out with blocks or on a bedstead. (Thank goodness they're identified otherwise I wouldn't know them all.)

The only reason I didn't give it a 5 is that the story was a little weak and it's a little pricey although for the size and illustrations it is justified.

Outstanding bedtime tale
How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight? entertains while also teaching good bedtime behavior. Combine children's fascination with dinosaurs and Mark Teague's irresisible, humorous illustrations and you have a sure hit with both child and parent.

The text is rhyming and fun to read aloud. The question is asked repeatedly, "do dinosaurs do this (bad behavior)" and then the answer is in the last few pages, "no, they don't do this (bad behavior), they do this (good behavior)." The illustrations serve to emphasize the behaviors partly due to the huge size of the dinosaurs. Each picture contains the name of the dinosaur also.

Along with a variety of dinosaurs, this book also features a variety of moms and dads which helps to give it a multicultural flavor.

For those children who enjoy the book for its dinosaur content, I also highly recommend "Ten Little Dinosaurs" by Pattie Schnetzler and "Sammy and the Dinosaurs" by Ian Whybrow.

A great story for any age
This is a wonderful book. Every page has the name of the dinosaur somewhere within the bedroom. And they are also all pictured with the name below on the first and last pages of the book. It starts off with "How do dinosaurs say goodnight when (and it is papa the first half of the book and then mama) comes in to turn off the light?" The dinosaurs are in bed and are basically large children and how they either will or won't want to go to bed, i.e "fall on his covers and cry?" or "stomp hisfeet on the floor and shout I want to hear one book more." All actions that any person who has read a child a bedtime story can relate too. Every child that I know has this book and loves it. You can enjoy reading it for it is basically simple reading that a child learning to read can memorize and tell you the story. Or sometimes they will just make up new actions to go along with the beautifully illustrated pictures. And the whole time they can learn all the dinosaurs. I think that this is a must for every in house library. Any kid will love it!

The Ashley Book of Knots takes us back to a time when knots saved lives and put dinner on the table. Whether out at sea or in a pioneer cabin, knots were a part of daily life, one that is nearly lost today. But in this attractive, well-organized archive of more than 3,900 different knots--presented through 7,000 illustrations--the art of knot tying lives on, both as a historical reference and a reservoir of handy knowledge.

Best bathroom material around...
...if you have a genuine love for knots. My fascination with knots grew out of years spent as a stage hand, where it was a necessity to know how to tie a bowline, a clove hitch, the occassional trucker's hitch, and of course knots tied on the bight when you're sixty feet above the stage having to tie off a 100' rope to the grid.

I would probably guess that 99% of people who know knots have learned them from others, who in turn have inherited their knowledge from someone else. It's a tradition, that's how I learned. In this day and age though, where for all practical purposes the art of knot tying is dying (if it is not already room temperature), _The Ashley Book of Knots_ is keeping that tradition alive, even though it may have been published well over 50 years ago. The drawings aren't always the clearest (it does help to have some knowledge of knot tying in hand when reading the book), but they are sufficient and with enough time and perseverance, the knots are doable. On the other hand, while it is one thing to know how a knot is tied, it is another to know its history and practical use. And that is where this voluminous book shines. As far as historical archives are concerned, this is one of the best, if not THE best, and you will want to have it in your bathroom... err, your library.

Highly recommended.

knot kidding.
This book has to represent the best value on the market today for anyone interested in knots, splices and fancy ropework. I worked in the Merchant Navy and have spent most of my life living on and around yachts, and I sincerely wish that I'd discovered this book 35 years ago. The Ashley Book of Knots is a treasure trove of useful information and instruction for anyone, from novice to expert, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Jim Briggs. Gold Coast, Australia.

"Just look it up in Ashley's!"
THE ASHLEY BOOK OF KNOTS (c.1944) by Clifford W. Ashley, is the definitive reference work on knots, splices, and ropework in general. Born in 1881 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Clifford W. Ashley was an antique dealer and artist, who spent eleven years writing his magnum opus, THE ASHLEY BOOK OF KNOTS, and died three years after its 1944 publication.

In his pursuit of ropework, Mr. Ashley spent six months at sea on the whaling bark SUNBEAM; and six weeks on a Delaware Bay oysterman called a 'bugeye'. He interviewed tradesmen, such as: steeplejacks, cobblers, truckdrivers, butchers, electric linesmen, and boyscouts as well as sailors and sea captains to document each nuance of knot unique to its trade. He was taught a few knots by Mr. Ringling himself of circus fame; and taught a knot to Mr. DuPont, a captain of industry.

The result of Mr. Ashley's research was a significant collection of 7,000 drawings of 3,900 knots and their application in a 620 page knot tyers tome which has become a veritable bible for rope workers the world over. In just about any capacity that a rope can be utilized has found its way into THE ASHLEY BOOK OF KNOTS. Mr. Ashley has covered: netting, lashings, block & tackle, splices, hitches, and bends. He went from purely decorative knots with no practical value to knots applied to industrial use. He included a whole chapter on rope tricks and puzzles. There is an amusing catalog of small figures the author drew to rate the quality of each knot described, such as a deuce of clubs to designate 'unimportance', or an kedge anchor to indicate 'reliability'.

Equally important as the knot's description was their utilization on incidental equipment. Mr. Ashley fortuitously included a description of a rope's application on fairleads, belaying pins, H-bitts, cleats, thumb-cleats, fife rails, pin rails, pin racks, and timberheads; as well as escoteric equipment such as euphroe blocks and crows foots.

The book also includes the important distinction between the kevel (or cavil) and the quarter cleat. The glossary in the back makes another refinement by distinguishing the knot from the sinnet, splice, hitch, and bend. Thus clearing up any misassumptions in knot application (such as that Knot Theory is a branch of pure mathematics and has nothing to do with Knot Tying!) - THE ASHLEY BOOK OF KNOTS settles any disputes in nomenclature.

The only short-coming to this significant work is that the drawings are unclear and vague in some instances, making it impossible to tye a knot in the example given. The book is dated in respect to splicing modern power braids such as Liquid Crystal Polymer, Spectra, or Kevlar; and makes no mention of the type of knot or splice found in an Astronaut's tether.

Still this can be tolerated in view of the wealth of information and history on knots, splices, and rope contained within its pages. And THE ASHLEY BOOK OF KNOTS has gained a further importance in its power of verification. For when some nimrod claims to have invented a new knot or splice, immediately the universal response is: "Just look it up in Ashley's!"

Gentle, supportive book for anyone who has experienced loss.
I am a psychologist working in a college counseling center, and I frequently recommend this book to my clients. It provides support for anyone who is experiencing grief related to a loss, including the death of a loved one and the breakup of a relationship. The best thing about this book is its unique, easy-to-read format: the chapters are written in outline form, and each chapter is just 1-2 pages long and printed on the left-hand sides of the pages only. The right-hand side pages contain poems, quotes, and sayings offering comfort as well as inspiration. This book will help you to feel that you are not along as you begin to cope with your loss.

Wonderful, easy to read guide through tough times
This book is a very easy to read guide which helps get you through the loss of a loved one, whether that loss is due to death or a break up. It starts from day one - "what happened?!??!" - and takes you to the end stage - moving on to the next love. It provides basic, common sense advice (we all know that in these times we sometimes lack that common sense!), poems, stories, and basic companionship. It acts as a friend, a guide, a helpful companion. You can sit down, read the portion applicable to you at that time, and then come back to the rest later. For example, if you are at the grieving stage, read that section, digest its advice, absorb the poems, and then, when you are ready, read on - to the next stage. The guide is constructed to lead you through the stages of grieving and moving on. Reading ahead can be helpful - so you know where you are heading - as is reading back, so that you can see how far you've come! And, if you aren't normally a poetry fan, don't worry! These are poems which are easy to read, funny, deep, and non-threatening, all at the same time. Get this book - you won't regret it!

Absolutely unique and priceless
This book is not a "chapter" book, but is a collection of thoughts on loss, the pain, the healing. The person who is emotionally distraught anc cannot follow chapters, can pick up this book, flip through it, and find words of comfort. This book was a tremendous comfort to me over 20 years ago when I suffered the loss of a love. I bought several copies to share then, and I'm thrilled to know the book is still available. I'm buying several copies again to give to people who need this help.

One Of The Best
This was the first book that I read by Lurlene McDaniel, and I picked it up totally by chance. But I am so glad I did. If you're reading this review right now, you probably know a little something about Lurlene McDaniel. First of all, her books are tearjerkers, there's no way around it. But they are extremly well written and make you feel almost every emotion known to man. And they are touching. So reader, you know Ms. McDaniel, and my advice to you is read this book. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you fall completely in love.

If you liked this book, try Don't Die My Love, Saving Jessica, The Girl Death Left Behind, all the One Last Wish books and The Legacy: Making Wishes Come True- all by Lurlene McDaniel

A great book, by a Great Author!!!
April, a young sweet girl, has fallen in love with a guy named Mark. Mark and her dated for a while. Then something came up. Mark told April that he had been diagnosed when he was young with Cystic Fibrosis. Then later on another life threatening problem came up. April had soon developed a brain tumor. She soon will die, but no one knows when. Then one day, they had gone to watch Mark race in one of his races and a terrible accident occurred. They rushed Mark to the hospital, His only wish was to marry April, but by what happened that might never happen. He asked April to run home and get her dress, so she did, she got there, and he asked her for marriage. She accepted. But, when she did, Mark died. This was a great book. It really made me think twice. Lurlene McDaniel is a great author, and I am already reading the sequel to this story. Thanks Lurlene.

A Great Book!
Lurlene McDaniel is one of the best authors I have read. One of the best books I have read by her is called "Till Death Do Us Part". This book was a very emotional book. McDaniel did a great job at making everything come togather in the end. During this book April is diagnosed with a brain tumor, that is inoperable. While all this is going on she meets a guy named Mark. Mark has cystic fibrosis. She and Mark start hanging out and going places togather. Pretty soon April starts falling in love with Mark. A couple of months later they get engaged. One day Mark got in a serious accident, that could change both their lifes forever.

Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See

The gentle rhyming and gorgeous, tissue-paper collage illustrations in this classic picture book make it a dog-eared favorite on many children's bookshelves. On each page, we meet a new animal who nudges us onward to discover which creature will show up next: "Blue Horse, Blue Horse, What do you see? I see a green frog looking at me." This pattern is repeated over and over, until the pre-reader can chime in with the reader, easily predicting the next rhyme. One thing readers might not predict, however, is just what kinds of funny characters will make an appearance at the denouement! Children on the verge of reading learn best with plenty of identifiable images and rhythmic repetition. Eric Carle's good-humored style and colorful, bold illustrations (like those in The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Grouchy Ladybug, and Have You Seen My Cat?) have earned him a prominent place in the children's book hall of fame. The bare necessities (ho ho!)
For those cave dwellers amongst you who've finally crept out of your hermit-like existences to gain a little knowledge about the wide world of children's picture books, the name "Eric Carle" will be unknown to you. For everyone else in the universe, however, Mr. Carle is undoubtedly one of the best known illustrators of the Western world. The father of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" and the more recent "Slowly Slowly Slowly Said the Sloth", his earlier work, "Brown Bear", is a sweet simple storyline that remains timeless.

In this story, different animal characters, cut cleverly from a dazzling array of colored papers, tell the viewer what it is that they see. The cat sees a dog, the dog sees a sheep, the sheep sees a goldfish, etc. Now when I said this story was timeless, I wasn't kidding. Honestly, I'm having a great deal of difficulty finding ANYTHING about this story that's going to date it in one or two hundred years down the road. Originally published in 1967, the book is particularly impressive because of the shot of children it cuts to towards the end. Suddenly the viewer is observing kids of a myriad of races and skin tones. In 1967. And these are not your white-kids-painted-brown type pictures either. And they're not all just black or white! There's the most surprising thing of all, to my mind. In an age when illustrators were having a devil of a time remembering to even include black kids in the occasional book, here we have a book that is including everything from Asian to Native American children, front and center.

On a completely unrelated side-note, the mother in this book bears a striking resemblance to a LOT of very hip mommies these days. From her dark rimmed Harry Potteresque glasses to her well coiffed hair, this is a mother on the go.

To be perfectly blunt, I'm not an Eric Carle fan. He bores me, and I have distinct memories of finding "The Hungry Caterpillar" annoying as a child. But at the same time I'm having a lot of difficulty finding anything at all wrong with this book. It's not the most exciting picture book on the market today. It will not grab you, necessarily. It doesn't demand the spotlight or find itself in intellectual discussions about the nature of animal representation for the pre-adolescent set. It's just a good book with a nice plot and pretty pictures that teach kids about colors and animals. And doggone it, that's good enough for me.

Educational, Simple, Fun and Great Illustrations
My son (2 years old)received this board book as a gift yesterday, and it is already his new favorite book.

The illustrations are extremely vivid and well illustrative of each animal and colour (except the goldfish, which doesn't quite look like a normal goldfish)

He loves to "peep" at the next page to see which animal is coming next (as he can't read as yet), and then loudly announce it as if he's reading. Of course he knows the words by heart already.

As we were driving today we passed a dog, and he proudly said "I see a white dog, looking at me!"

I never thought such a simple book and concept could be so educational.

Consistantly Requested!
All three of my children LOVE this book...(Sam 6, Allison 3, and Cole 1). We have two copies in the house because they get read so much. The pictures are bright and beautiful and each of the children have learned colors, animals, and the fundamentals of rhyming from this excellent book. I also suggest "White Bear White Bear What do you Hear"...

Pat Summitt has been called a living legend. As head coach of the University of Tennessee Lady Vols, Summitt has taken her NCAA Division 1 women's basketball team to back-to-back national championships in 1996 and 1997, and five titles in a 10-year span. In Reach for the Summit, with the help of former Sports Illustrated writer Sally Jenkins, she draws from 24 years as a successful head coach to provide motivational advice for anyone who wants to succeed in sports, business, and life in general. Structured around her Definite Dozen system, each chapter covers one of her 12 commandments of achievement by interweaving personal anecdotes, strategies for success, and basic ethics. A lot of people can win once, she writes. They get lucky, or follow their intuition, or strike on a good short-term formula. But very few people know how to repeat success on a consistent basis. They lose sight of their priorities, grow content, and abandon their principles. Summitt's book is about building a system of principles and sticking to it.
Average review score:

A valuable read for anyone in pursuit of excellence!
You don't have to be a basketball fan or embrace Pat Summitt's aggressive personal coaching style to benefit from this thought provoking book. If you've been put off by Pat's "mean" image in the past (as I had been), check out this book and get to know her better. She shares her successes and failures with refreshing honesty and delightful, often humorous anecdotes. She's the first one to admit that her in-your-face style isn't for everyone, but her genuine love of her student athletes is reflected here. Read about Pat's philosophy of winning with an open mind, and you will find yourself equipped with some practical wisdom on how to rise to the challenges of life.

Should Be Required Reading For EVERYONE
Having long been a fan of Pat Summitt & the Tennessee Lady Vols, I finally got around to reading this book and I must say it was a real eye-opener. You've seen pictures of Pat on tv & in the newspapers, usually in some player's face during a crucial moment of a game & you might think, "this woman is really tough on her players." Well, guess what? She IS tough, and many of the players that she's been toughest on went on to be championship players in the WNBA after getting their degrees at the University Of Tennessee. Other than building championship teams, Pat's main goal is seeing that her players get their education & graduate. Everyone on the team must sit in the 1st 3 rows in their classes and pay attention. After reading this book, I came away with the realization that she really does care about these young women and always made it a point to assure them of this. At times when she knew she'd really have to lean on a player, Pat would contact their parents to give them a heads up so that there would be no misunderstanding. Pat Summitt grew up tough but fair, not afraid of hard work and expecting alot from others. Her Definite Dozen System is easy to apply in any job, in all walks of life. You just have to be determined to overcome adversity and to face every challenge that comes your way. Highly recommended reading for everyone, not just fans of women's basketball.

A Master of Success--A Must Read!!!!
Of course, I could not just read one of Pat Summitt's books, I had to read all three. Pat has a plain, matter-of-fact and in-your-face style that is refreshing. If you can not find the mountain of success to climb, Pat will bring the mountain to you. She forces you to look at her definite dozen and find the areas where you know you could most likely improve. And without fail, she will lay down the gauntlet challenging you. She makes you believe that success is within everyone's reach, if you would just work at it. I have made some adjustments myself, since I have started a part-time home based business. I have read a number of books on success. "Reach for the Summit" is by far the clearest, simplest and most inspiring that I have read. GREAT WORK PAT!

The Dark Elf Trilogy is a true masterpiece!
As an avid reader of Sci-Fi/Fantasy, and a long-time fan of such authors as Tolkien, Bova, and LeGuin, you can well imagine my initial reaction when a friend recommended these books to me. The role-playing section of my local bookstore wasn't one I was in the habit of visiting (even though I did play Dungeons & Dragons as a teen). I always assumed that the TSR books were nothing more than pulp, not worthy of a second glance.

Boy, was I wrong. Salvatore effectively uses TSR's Forgotten Realms world as a backdrop for a story that is as unique as it is readable. He creates a society whose members thrive on evil, and breathes life into his creation like a dark god. If you've ever played D&D, and want to know exactly what the term "Lawful Evil" means, look no further for an explanation. Salvatore's antagonist characters are truly despicable, and lend a great deal to the Drow society's plausibility.

Throughout the series, Salvatore brings to light many social and moral issues that easily translate to real life, while keeping the pace of the read fast with breath-taking swordplay and action scenes that will have you running around your kitchen with a broom handle (assuming you don't have a scimitar lying about...).

All in all, a HIGHLY recommended read for anyone who enjoys the fantasy genre.

Powerful Conclusion
R.A. Salvatore here brings his superb "Dark Elf Trilogy" to a close. This novel is without a doubt the best of the series. This novel is different from "Homeland" and "Exile" in that it takes place out of the Underdark, on the surface of the world. Because of this Salvatore's writing is explored in a new way as he describes the nature and surroundings around the main character, Drizzt Do'Urden, where in the first two books of the series Salvatore's descriptions were not as used as they were in this novel.

Drizzt has reached the world beyond the Underdark, which turns out to be an interesting place for Drizzt. From the beginning of the book when Drizzt is spotted he is thought to be a villain with the intention of making the world a bad place. Drizzt is accused as the murderer of a whole family and is being chased by a ranger, Roddy McGristle. Meanwhile, the orcs are considering Drizzt a threat and are about to make war against him. While Drizzt is out in the wild of the worlds he meets Montolio (or Mooshie) who is a ranger. Montolio teaches Drizzt history and skills to survive in the world and shows Drizzt how he is really a ranger. Montolio is a great friend and advisor. Together Drizzt and Montolio battle an army of orcs. This is not the end of the story as there is much to be told by Salvatore, but I won't tell you about that; go ahead and read the book.

This book is not a clone of J.R.R. Tolkien's works as it offers an original plot and great characters. This book does, however, include many of fantasy's creatures, such as orcs, goblins, dwarves, giants, and much more. You get the idea. This didn't bother me, though, as all of the creatures took on interesting characters.

Not many trilogies in the fantasy genre have kept me as entertained, as moved, and full of wonder as R.A. Salvatore's "Dark Elf Trilogy." To get the full impact of the story that is told here I advise you to go ahead and read the first two books of this trilogy before getting on to this one. This is a fantasy novel to read over and over again.

Happy Reading!

It pulls you in with practically every paragraph
Running from the party of surface elves hunting him down to see who and what he really is, Drizzt Do'Urden, and his trusty friend Guenhwyvar enjoy their journey, and protect each other from every bad creature that crosses their path. Many people had heard about this drow, but haven't seen him until he comes down to the towns to see what the surface world is really like.
I think that R.A. Salvatore is a great author who wrote an amazing story about a drow elf going on a journey in his book Sojourn. It was a great story which pulled me in with practically every paragraph. It also put a great picture in my mind as it explained what things looked like. For example: he explained what a 'hook horror' looked like, by explaining the feeling of its armor, and the weight of its body. My favorite part in his book was when Drizzt went to avenge a human family's death. He never knew this family very well, and they thought him to be a threat, but Drizzt knew not to hurt them. He tried to protect them from everything, until a demon finally came and killed them all, which made Drizzt very angry.
Drizzt Do'Urden starts up in the middle of his adventure, standing on the surface of the world. He fights to protect himself, and other surface creatures such as elves, humans, and dwarfs from creatures that shouldn't be there. During his adventures he meets many friends that saved him from the surface by teaching him things he didn't know. Drizzt went through a few hardships, and he finally began to realize who he was.
I think Sojourn was a great story, because it gave specific reasons to why Drizzt is such a good drow elf. It made me want to help other people and animals, and it also inspired me to go out and find some animals and make them my friends.

Excellent!
I stumbled across this book at a time when I really needed a friend to talk to who would understand my struggles with living single and living a christian life. Reading her book was like talking to my best friend who knew all my innermost secrets. Ms. Hammond's godly wisdom is awesome! I am finding peace and joy living single and sold out for Christ! And when I find myself struggling and becoming impatient, I pick up the book and read it again! Her biblically based advice and the study guides for each chapter have helped me to learn to value myself and see myself the way God sees and values me. I will continue to read God's word and everything Michelle McKinney Hammond writes! I encourage all women, single and married, to read this book!

A Perfect How to wait manual!
I've had friends who've read her other books. I was happy in my singleness, finding my purpose and being busy in church. I was in a group and everyone seemed to believe I would be the first one in the group to remarry. I saw this book on the shelf and thought, "why not?" Excellent, excellent, excellent. The only thing I need to concern myself with is continuing to be about the father's business and fulfilling the purpose he created me for. In other words, redeeming the time. I don't have to look because "he that findeth a wife findeth a good thing." I have to let God be God and when he feels like its time and I'm where I need to be in him, he will work out the details. All I have to do is be who I need to be in him. Practical, insightful, comical are just a few of the words that come to mind when I think about the information she shares in this book. Be anxious for nothing my sisters in Christ!! If God has placed the desire inside of you for a mate, then regardless of how bleak the statistics might be, he has someone special set aside just for you. Wait and again I say wait. You can't afford to do anything else and be in the will of God.

Great for your soul!
All of Michelle's books have been very empowering for me. This book has given me inspiration that we as woman are a true treasure, and the right man will be guided to us. We should not look for them! So sit back ladies, and let your spiritual beliefs keep you strong! Read this book for inspiration, empowerment and a reminder that life is precious and we don't NEED a man, but want that special man in our lives when the time is right. Keep busy, do things you love to do, "get a life" and we will glow!
