Twelve Outstanding Stories of West Virginia
Breece Pancake killed himself with a shotgun in Charlottesville, Virginia on Palm Sunday in 1979. He was 26 years old at the time and had just completed a graduate writing program at the University of Virginia. Four years later "The Stories of Breece D'J Pancake" was published, a collection of twelve stories that posthumously established his literary reputation as one of the finest short story writers in twentieth century American literature.

Pancake grew up in the hollows of West Virginia and each of the carefully wrought stories in this collection deals with the seemingly desperate lives of the working poor in that part of the country. They are remarkably crafted stories, written with a deep sense for the locale and the people from which they are drawn. They are also models of precision, the kind of stories that deserve to be read over and over, studied for the way in which they use foregrounding and the mundane details of everyday life--albeit everyday life that quietly screams with the desperation of poverty, deadening work, drinking, promiscuity, and brutality-to draw complex portraits of people who endure, even when endurance is no more than a substitute for hope. As he writes in "A Room Forever," the story of a tugboat mate spending New Year's Eve in an eight-dollar-a-night hotel room where he drinks cheap whiskey out of the bottle and eventually ends up with a teen-aged prostitute: "I stop in front of a bus station, look in on the waiting people, and think about all the places they are going. But I know they can't run away from it or drink their way out of it or die to get rid of it. It's always there."

The best of these stories are "Trilobites," "The Honored Dead," "Fox Hunters," and "In the Dry." But there really isn't a weak story in the bunch. Every story is captivating, every one an exemplar of what good short story writing should be. At the end, the only thing that disappoints, that leaves the reader discomforted, is the thought that Pancake died so young, that these are the only stories we have by a truly remarkable writer.

A Voice Crying to be Heard...
In this volume, the writer's surviving voice really hits home and stays there. Like that perfect song that stays in your head and carries you through the day, Breece Pancake's words and wisdom echoe through the reader's mind forever after reading them. In this life, there is always something around to remind of a Breece Pancake story. From the time weathered fossils in the creek beds to the rare West Virginia 120 m.p.h. strait stretches, after reading this volume I see Pancake everywhere, no matter where I am in the world. Like the trilobite preserved beneath the earth that hides it, these stories are a tangible (and for some reason widely unknown), history of a time and generation that, like the tragedy of Pancake's suicide, is destined to be repeated if ignored.

The way words were meant to hold together
There are times when things come together in such a way that you know it's perfect. It can be a phrase of music, a blending of colors and sounds in film, or, in this case, the words of a story. This book tells stories that fall together in a timeless way, but are still firmly rooted in a specific place and time.

Having grown up in West Virginia, there were parts of these stories that spoke to me from a sort of "native" perspective. But more to it was the emotion that was the core, the skin and the stitching of each of these stories.

It's a good book to own. To read from when you feel like being taken to another place for a while. And to carry a piece of that place with you once you put the book down.

Best DJ Book EVER!
Simply the BEST. If you're a DJ and don't own this book, you're probably a terrible DJ. BUY THYIS BOOK!!!

Ha ha ha ha ha!!!
All I can say is that this is so ridiculous. I read this book at the library and I couldn't stop laughing. So DJs have talant? It takes years to master the 'art' of playing a record? Listen to me and listen well, you want respect, girls, and money? Let the losers be DJs. Musicians with talant do just that, make music, with instruments. Go buy a guitar.

This book had some elementary basics on sound levels and accoustics, but clubs have people to do that while your setting up your band, so what's the point?

This book rocks!
I just recently started taking DJ classes, and this book has been tremendous help. Historically, the barriers to entry have been a bit high in the DJ field, often leaving beginners like myself wondering where to start: what equipment do I need? what are the fundamentals I have to work on? The book fills this gap, providing a comprehensive guide on equipment, techniques, online resources and the general nature of the industry in a very clear format. I've browsed through other books on this subject (a rather limited selection) and none of them come close in terms of breadth and quality.

The book hits on a lot of key points and has an encouraging tone, balanced out by a bit of sarcastic humor. For instance, it notes the likely frustrations from trying a new technique (yes, everyone stinks in the beginning), but this just requires practice, practice, practice. The book has also been right on the mark about how most people in the field, from experienced DJs to record store operators, are quite helpful. Even when I pass the beginner stage, it will surely be a useful reference well into the future.

Superjock: The Loud, Frantic, Nonstop World of a Rock Radio Dj

The road to success
Superjock is an excellent biography of how Larry Lujack climbed the rungs, known as markets and got to pinnacle of his career in the Windy City. There is a lot of what went on then, that goes on today. The book was written when radio was more about the talent then about the business. While Lujack does drop a few names from radio stars of that era i.e. Charlie Tuna, Mac Richmond, Jerry Kaye, Pat O'Day, Tom Murphy, etc. What is missing is how Lujack networked to get where he did. But, then again, the book is about Lujack's career path, not about those of his radio bretheran.
A MUST READ for anyone in the business then...and now.

How it REALLY was on the radio in th '70s.
Very simply, there would be no Don Imus, Howard Stern or Tom Leykis had Lujack not proved first that crabbiness could win on the radio. Ruling the airwaves in Seattle when Imus was still a railroad worker, Lujack was belicose, sarcastic and witty between Beatles and Motown records. No library should be without it!

A Primer for Personality Radio
What did Larry scream into Paul Revere & The Raiders' dressing room? And WHY? Did he really share a billboard with a huge advertisement for Cruex? And not complain?

Larry Lujack describes the tornado that REAL control rooms are with real solid state equipment - no RCS or Scott Systems in 1970 - and cussing engineers, annoying salespeople and breaking equipment! He had cart machines and maybe an ITC r2r - and plenty of cigs. He brings the 70s radio world alive: what radio station people are like - what it was like to party with the pop stars and to nail down an intro while lighting another cigarette and taking another request from one or two of scores on hold as ter lights flash during the last ten seconds of his commercials -- he delivers insight into why radio management will never change - and why radio is such a scintillating, infuriating and beloved calling. Retired and playing golf in Arizona now, he ruled Chicago for years and this book is a MUST for any radio afficionado's collection.

I Got a Loan and Bought My Gear by Reading This Book
I got this book and put together my business plan by using the example plan provided in the book. The business plan is in a file that can be edited by downloading it from a Web site that goes with the book - It was a snap, after I downloaded the biz plan example. With my finished business plan in hand, I secured a loan that financed all my pro equipment purchases.

I've been Djing for several months and wanted to learn more about business planning and what I needed to do to start a business of my own. I found what I needed and more with this book and the Web site that goes with it. I highly recommend this book with its business and equipment tips and tricks.

Excellent resource for all levels of mobile DJ/entertainers
Robert A. Lindquist was the inspiration I needed when at the age of 20 years old when I was breaking into the mobile DJ world. I met Robert at a trade show in Atlantic City and purchased Spinnin' 2000 from him. My copy is autographed!

Since then, I've opened my own DJ business, sold another, provided training and recruitment for the two largest DJ companies in NJ, wrote - self published - and successfully sold "Making Money As A Mobile Entertainer" a training course for mobile DJ/entertainers, and run a DJ related web site.

Mr. Linquist was a tremendous inspiration for all of this. Reading his book showed me that there are many avenues for Djs outside of merely being a DJ.

Get this book. It could change your life. Really. It did for me. Thanks Robert.

Highly recommended
I started out as a DJ in my bedroom a few years ago playing around with my first set of decks. I wish to God this book had been around then! That way I might have escaped a few of the pitfalls and had more money to boot! Bedroom DJ is a fun read as it tells a story about the writer trying to learn to DJ as a female in London as well as including interviews with DJs and their anecdotes about learning. It all makes it a bit more personal than the usual guides that can be a bit less accessible. The book is also divided into useful sections, making each skill more easy to handle in bitesized chunks. The story is funny, as are the DJ anecdotes. If you're a learner this book should inspire and encourage you as well as giving you plenty of advice from all the top names.

A must for all DJs
Bedroom DJ is a great read for all DJs - beginners or otherwise. Basically it's the humorous story of how a young technophobic woman over in London, England set out to learn how to DJ completely from scratch, after being dumped by her DJ boyfriend. She struggles with the usual stuff like buying the equipment, putting it together and then trying to learn mixing and scratching techniques. It's a fun and accessible guide and best of all she turns to the experts - DJs like Roger Sanchez, David Morales, Judge Jules, Cutmaster Swift and Dave Pearce - for advice and there are indepth Q&A sessions with these DJs, including anecdotes about when they were learning that you wouldn't normally read in all the trendy Djing magazines. An entertaining, accessible, non-patronising and informative read that shows you don't have to be a technical wizard or the coolest cat in town to have fun learning to DJ. As a wannabee DJ for some years I for one would thoroughly recommend it!

How To Avoid DJ Horror Stories: The Standard Reference Guide For Brides, Party Planners And Anyone Else In The Market For A Mobile Disc Jockey
Published in Paperback by Jeff Harrison & Jon Paul (January, 1998)

Amazon base price: $10.95
Used price: $20.00
Collectible price: $37.40

Substituting opinion for fact
Mr. Harrison is probably a good mobile dj but he makes the mistake of assuming regional preferences (such as clients not wanting lighting) and that most weddings go 4 hours is true all over. More importantly, there are numerous occasions where he states his opinion as fact. If these were truly facts, there would be documentation to back them up. There is a lot of good advice in this book but it's mixed in with a lot of opinions and outdated information which the target audience would like have difficulty sifting through.

Must read for all brides and DJs too!
I love this book! As a DJ with 15 years in the business, the author has said what everyone else was afraid to say. This is the all-out truth about DJ myths and marketing. Highly recommend this book.

A "MUST HAVE" for anyone looking for a DJ!!
In such a vast field as DJ services, it nice to be able to find the true gems among the pack. This book was instrumental in helping me select a DJ for my wedding, and I was EXTREMELY pleased with the results. If you want to know how to identify a "line" when you hear one from a DJ, GET THIS BOOK!

A real surprise...
Review
When I got this book from O'Reilly, my first thought was "How cute! A little book for people who can't figure out a search engine." After reading it, I either have to include myself in that group or change my opinion of the book. This is really good stuff!

I knew there was more to Google than what I was probably using. I've seen the Google groups area, I've used the image area, and of course I've done web searches. But I didn't realize the power of the search syntax they use on the site. I didn't know that you can restrict searches to document types, include/exclude sites or domains, include/exclude based on posted/updated date, decide whether you want the search term in the title, the entire page, or as part of an anchor link. I didn't realize you could modify the URL on the fly to refine your search without going back to the search page each time. I didn't know anything about Froogle. And I definitely didn't know you could change your interface page to a variety of languages, including Klingon and pig Latin!

In a very concise, readable manner, the authors show you all you need to know to get started with the creation of much more powerful searches than you've had in the past. And they repeatedly emphasize that learning how to use Google is best done by experimentation. After reading this book (and it won't take you that long), you'll never view web searches in quite the same way again.

Conclusion
I used to say that if you give me five minutes, I can find what I'm looking for on the web. After reading this book, I may have to revise that to three minutes. If you get a chance to get this book, do so!

Nice Book! (Especially syntax and News)
I was interested in this book from the beginning, and I wasn't disappointed. Though I'm basically a computer power user, this book offered tons of info I didn't know about Google.

Book Review: Google Pocket Guide
I've always said "What good is a resource if you don't know how to use it?" Imagine walking into your public library and not being able to differentiate between fiction and nonfiction books, or being incapable of deciphering the Catalog Retrieval System to find your book.

With the plethora of obscure information at the deepest reaches of the Internet, you clearly understand the ramifications of not using a top notch search engine. To that end, Google is unmistakably and unequivocally the best search engine available in assisting you with your searches.

O'Reilly's Google Pocket Guide, by Tara Calishain, Rael Dornfest, and
DJ Adams, should be required reading for not only learning the capabilities of Google, but for getting the most out of your searches as well. They say we only use 10% of our brains (don't quote me on that, but just go with it). I guarantee the majority of Google users tap into less than 10% of the search engine's voluminous capabilities.

The Google Pocket Guide is 129 pages broken down into four main sections complete with an appendix and Syntax Summary (very useful). Part 1 explains exactly what Google is and isn't. It also provides a concise overview of how to improve your Google search results. Part 2 called "Asking for What You Want," should be considered Google 101. Here you will find the essentials such as Phrase Searches, Basic Boolean, and putting the wild cards to work for you. The Google "Advanced Search" is demystified as well. You will also find special syntax searches and how to mix them to create powerful possibilities in your investigative quests. Part 3 is all about making Google work for you and understanding the results you requested. This includes not only setting preferences, but how to interpret the results of your Google search. Additional coverage is provided in the "Anatomy of a Search Result" and how Google guides your questionable spellings to assist you. Part 4 for many will be like opening up a whole new world of Google services that will absolutely amaze you! I'm not going to give the store away, but I will tell you this-you will become a much smarter and more resourceful individual after reading this section.

As a person that lives and dies by the Internet, I can tell you the Google Pocket Guide is the best ... investment you can make to grow your web experience. Resist your fast food drive-through lunch and go to the bookstore with your [$$]instead...nourishing your mind is a much better alternative!

Way to go DJ
I did not just give this book 5 stars becuase the author is a great friend of mine. i gave 5 stars becuase of the emmense feeling and love that is seen in each of the poems written by DJ. His heart is bared with each writing. Its a wonderful book which has graced my desk since it came out. From a writter so passionate about life so is he about his poems.... its a great book and should be read by all.

Disturbing
An interesting read albeit somewhat disturding that this gentleman can get away with trying to sell such a book. A thought provoking read in so much as it provokes the thought "I'm glad I'm not D.J."

Go forth and buy it, but if you crash your car while reading it make sure you stop and leave your details!
