J.K.Rowling did it again!
"Harry Potter und die Kammer des Schreckens" is the German translation of the second Harry-Potter-book. I think I don't have to tell you anything about the story - see the reviews of the English version for details (besides: who wants to read more about the content of such a book than the back page offers - it would spoil some of the fun since the Potter books are in part a crime story!).

The translation is - judging from my reading experience - well done and worth reading. The language is not too complicated so the book qualifies as reading stuff for a foreigner wishing to practice his German reading skills. I didn't find any translation mistakes - the language sounded genuine German and was vivid and fun to read. The names (always a problem when translating) are not altered, so some of the flair that comes with the nicely selected names of the original is lost to the non-English reader. But this second book shows that this is the right way to go: there is a name-letter-puzzle which plays a key role in this book and translating that one would have been a very hard task indeed.

So the translation receives 5 stars, all well earned for the content as for the translation.

My final note goes to the discussion if this book is for adults as well as teenagers or not: anyone waiting for deep insights into the society, mankind and the world we live in will be disappointed when reading this book. But it is by far the best youth book I ever read, 350 fast pacing pages and I never regretted that I bought it. Nobody whants to read Joyce all the time. And when I turn too light reading stuff, I expect quality as well. Here is where this book has its place in the adult market.

An invaluable reference when shopping for recordings!
It's a pity this book is now out of print. I highly suggest trying to find a copy, either to buy or at a library, prior to your next major shopping run for CDs. The author critically evaluates all recordings for quality, something that is important and all too often overlooked in many record reviews. Also, when some reviewers assign a quality rating, you have no idea what their reference system consists of, and thus have no basis for comparison. The author describes his system and method of listening, giving you a firm benchmark and insight into how to interpret his reviews. In almost every case where I've heard or bought a disc reviewed in this book, I've found I agree with his rating of it, and in the few cases where I didn't exactly agree I felt he was 90% correct. The only downside, other than the fact that this book is out of print, is that we need a new updated edition, as there have been many excellent recordings released since the book was written. Also, I would like to see the emphasis expanded to include more jazz titles that are excellently recorded, although perhaps this isn't as important as with classical works (e.g. there is only one Miles Davis Quintet but multiple recordings by different orchestras and labels of Beethoven's 5th).

Overall, an excellent reference for the critical music lover, and one which I use often when shopping for new recordings.

Inspiring Our Grandchildren
We happened to buy 4 of these for our grandchildren going off to college as we wanted something different from another pen and pencil set. We listened to one first and oh how we wished we had these CD's when our own chldren left for college. Mr Vaughn says all the things that parent's would like to say, but don't dare, because we don't want to upset or alienate our kids. Amazing to us, all of them wrote us thank-you notes saying how much they had "picked up" even though they hadn't listened to them until well into the semester. We are now planning to give them as High School graduation gifts to our friend's children. Thank you Mr Vaughn!

Fantastic and Comprehensive Overview - Excellent!
This book is a great resource for new initiates as well as veteran jazz lovers. It will help anyone to get a clear understanding of what jazz is all about -- individual expression and passion. Gridley fills in gaps that you can't get from reading liner notes alone. This overview breaths life into each stage in the evolution of jazz in America.

Great book captures era in Rock&Roll History
Local DJ captures THE defining era of rock&roll history--the 1950s through the 1990s.. Reading the book is like spending a few hours at an old Irish bar, listening to great stories that are more intriguing than fiction because they are REAL. It's a great trip down memory lane, or a way to vicariously live the life you WISH you'd lived.

The author got all interesting aspects on the basic sciences and the best way for diagnosis and treatment with many excellent chapters. It is really very helpful book for the residents, practicionners and spine specialists. I highly appreciate this great work. Thank you.

Fritz Lang would be proud!
With this version of "M," Jon J. Muth updates the visual of Fritz Lang's classic screen play. The story is told through Muth's stunning photo-realistic charcoal sketches, that mold Lang's cinematic tale to fit perfectly into a graphic novel format. "M" is yet another example of the heights to which visual and verbal storytelling can soar.

awesome, really
Haven't looked deeply into this software, but am amazed from a cursory glance. I was interested in looking at different styles, just to educate myself, not to necessarily go out and learn martial arts. So I got this through Cyber-deals. The software relies on Quicktime, a version of which comes in the software, for whatever system you have, PC or Mac. The CD relies on movies, to show the different moves. It has a clever interface, with a woman as the HELP button, who appears and says that this is what her `grandfather' compiled, through is many trips abroad. There's a library of books, that discusses the different styles -- judo, karate, etc.; a comparaview that lets you compare 12 different martial arts styles, side by side, for things like leg kicks and hand movements; a journal that the grandfather wrotes, why i haven't figured out yet; and a gallery which is animation of oriental scenes/warriors. Looks like a fun, clever program. I'd turn down volume before you get into the program, where it's hard to adjust that once it's up and running. To get through the hokey stuff, like the beginning, just click on the interface, and you get the next scenario. Keep clicking till you get to the real menu. The visuals were a little dark but that could be my monitor, and I am not picky that way. To figure out the button, for how to maneuver around, you'll have to experiment a little because my version didn't have text tags. The exit was clever. You click and a door slides open revealing the cogs of the software. From there you have to click around to find out the quit button because I couldn't readily see it. Still, it looks like a lush, fun product. Would recommend for anyone interested in encyclopedic info, that's also imaginative.
