No soundscape!
Anticipating a lecture on Gregorian chant by Randel, the new president of the University of Chicago, I approached our newly acquired copy of MUSIC IN OUR WORLD through its index. Turning to the indicated pages I saw how Gregorian was discussed in the set of pages overlapping with Hildegard of Bingen. Of course I wanted to hear the contrast between the two musics. Alas! the CD meant to accompany the text was, according to the what we learned from Amazon, NOT YET AVAILABLE. Yet we knew from other sources that the disc had already been produced. Our searches by other routes led always to dead ends. Thus, when attending our president's lecture, I had only the words without any sound in my ears. Curiously, he also offered no samples of the music. Apparently words rather than notes are sufficient for the musical cognoscenti. Would Amazon or the book's publisher please make it EASY for the would-be-customer --who is neither professor nor student of music-- to find the CD meant to accompany the text? Renate Fernandez P.S. I've just learned that what I'm hoping to hear is catalogued as COMPACT DISC SET FOR USE WITH MUSIC IN OUR WORLD by Stuart-White. Again, another curiosity, its authorship is reversed. No matter, I shall soon be able to hear it. I very much like the book's combination of text, illustrations and caption, and boxes. The illustration of textures and melodies on page 113 has me puzzled, however. The absence of words or syllables under the line illustrating Monophonic texture fails to clarify how the line accords or fails to accord with the word. You can see by my comments that there is a potential readership/listenership outside of the circle of pros that is eager to accede simultaneously to MUSIC IN OUR WORLD.

A Definitive Music History
I recently bought this book and found it to be outstanding. Ihave read quite a few music books including library references(although not text books - which this is) and found this book to be quite readable yet scholarly and comprehensive. There are many insets devoted to major composers, virtually no significant composer is omitted and there are many maps showing the cultural settings of the varius music periods. There are couple page summaries at the end of chapters. Unlike some books you're half way through by the time you get to Beethoven. I was glad that there is extensive coverage to medieval and renaissance music. The latin liturgy is well explained. The book shows well the place of music history in the general history of the west - in fact I got some new insights about western history. Lastly it is reasonably price for a college text. END

CD Review
After a quick and easy installation, the CD program "BedTime Tales and Coloring Activities" was the center of my little girl's attention for the next hour and one-half. The story, "Dock Rats" fascinated her; the visual and auditory aspects of the children's story were superbly done. The necessary interaction between the story and the child required only a click of the mouse to turn the page. At age four, and with very little prompting, she found the page button and advanced the story page by page. But by far, the most entertaining time by her was spent selecting which pages (184 in all) to print and then color. The coloring book feature has and continues to be her most favorite activity. The CD's wide selection of images and their ability to be colored soon lent themselves to be cut out and arranged on a child's makeshift storyboard. An activity she applied all on her own! For young children whose interest in stories and activities are similar to my little girl's, I think that "BedTime Tales and Coloring Activities" will provide a source of entertainment for years to come at a very nominal price.

I used this book so much I litterally wore it out.
I was given this classic about 15 years ago. It was the basis of everything I ever knew about programming in Atari BASIC. Now I am learning Visual Basic and C++. All the basic concept I laened from Dr. C. Wacko still aply. It's unfortunate that due to the fact Atari BASIC and Atari computers have become obsolete, so has this hilarious and educatonal book. It's better than the "complete idiot's guide's" or "...for dummies" books could ever hope to be. Wouldn't it be great if David Heller wrote new books for current programming languages?

Duke Ellington on Compact Disc an Index and Text of the Recorded Works of Duke Ellington

duke ellington on compact disc
I have read many books about Duke Ellington, and found this book to be by far and away the most informative in this CD age. It's cross indexes are excellent, and the number of CD releases at the time this book was published (1994) is very thorough. It belongs on the shelf with other discographies. This book has been very helpful to me in my CD collecting of the maestro.

Great Practice Aid
This play-along track CD makes practice more useful because yound instrumentalists can actually play along with a 'band', which is an opportunity that most don't get when they are just starting out.

About Book 2...
The "Essential Elements : A Comprehensive Band Method - Book 2" is a great book for a young person who is learning an instrument for the first time. There is a fingering chart in the back of the book to make looking up fingerings quick and easy. The book starts off very basic with the parts of the instrument. The easiest notes to play and finger are presented first with exercises to practice them.

Hal Leonard also offered other books that correlate (they even tell you what pages they go along with) with some of the skills in this book. They are:
Essential Elements Movie Favorites
Essential Elements Broadway Favorites
Essential Elements Patriotic Favorites

Practice makes PERMANENT, not PERFECT.

Learn from the master
I haven't read the book, but if you want to learn about frisbee, Roddick is the person to turn to. He and my dad were both part of the frisbee club at Millersville University back in the late 60s, and the club set the (then) world record for the longest game of catch with a frisbee, and later went on to play in the first inter-collegiate game of Ultimate Frisbee, was the president of the International Frisbee Assn.
