Superjock: The Loud, Frantic, Nonstop World of a Rock Radio Dj

The road to success
Superjock is an excellent biography of how Larry Lujack climbed the rungs, known as markets and got to pinnacle of his career in the Windy City. There is a lot of what went on then, that goes on today. The book was written when radio was more about the talent then about the business. While Lujack does drop a few names from radio stars of that era i.e. Charlie Tuna, Mac Richmond, Jerry Kaye, Pat O'Day, Tom Murphy, etc. What is missing is how Lujack networked to get where he did. But, then again, the book is about Lujack's career path, not about those of his radio bretheran.
A MUST READ for anyone in the business then...and now.

How it REALLY was on the radio in th '70s.
Very simply, there would be no Don Imus, Howard Stern or Tom Leykis had Lujack not proved first that crabbiness could win on the radio. Ruling the airwaves in Seattle when Imus was still a railroad worker, Lujack was belicose, sarcastic and witty between Beatles and Motown records. No library should be without it!

A Primer for Personality Radio
What did Larry scream into Paul Revere & The Raiders' dressing room? And WHY? Did he really share a billboard with a huge advertisement for Cruex? And not complain?

Larry Lujack describes the tornado that REAL control rooms are with real solid state equipment - no RCS or Scott Systems in 1970 - and cussing engineers, annoying salespeople and breaking equipment! He had cart machines and maybe an ITC r2r - and plenty of cigs. He brings the 70s radio world alive: what radio station people are like - what it was like to party with the pop stars and to nail down an intro while lighting another cigarette and taking another request from one or two of scores on hold as ter lights flash during the last ten seconds of his commercials -- he delivers insight into why radio management will never change - and why radio is such a scintillating, infuriating and beloved calling. Retired and playing golf in Arizona now, he ruled Chicago for years and this book is a MUST for any radio afficionado's collection.

The Callas Legacy: The Complete Guide to Her Recordings on Compact Discs
Published in Paperback by Amadeus Pr (August, 1995)
Author: John Ardoin
Amazon base price: $22.95
Used price: $10.97
Average review score:

Indispensable reference for Callas and opera fans
John Ardoin's recent death is a real loss for opera buffs everywhere, as it means that there will be no more updated editions, at least by him, of this exhaustively researched guide to the recordings of arguably the greatest, certainly the most famous opera singer of the twentieth century.

At the time of its publication this incarnation had the most complete data about the diva's recordings on compact disc then available, including newly discovered complete performances of Aida and La Traviata. Even when the information goes out of date, as it inevitably will (new incarnations of live performances will appear, and perhaps rumored unpublished material will surface), Ardoin's gracefully written, knowledgeable and balanced commentaries on Callas' work will remain an endless source of pleasure. May _The Callas Legacy_ come back into print, and soon!

GREAT BOOK, GREAT LADY
This is not just an invaluable introduction to the greatest opera singer of the century. It is also a guide through those works, so that the more you know about Callas, the better this book gets.

The Best Guide to Callas' Recording
If you are a Callas fan or are planning to become one, this book is indispensable. One is faced with so many Callas recordings, both studio and live, that it is very hard to choose which ones to get without a good guide. And this book is the best you can find around. Ardoin leads you through every recording that Callas made, and he offers an objective and detailed analysis of her accomplishments. So if you are trying to decide which one out of her dozen or so Normas should be joined to your collection, you can read all about the pros and contras of every single recording. For the ones who already own an older edition of this book that dealt with Callas on records, this volume won't offer much new, there are new reviews on recently-surfaced Aida and Traviata, as well as a few concert arias, but the bulk of the book is the same as in older editions.

Stop whatever guitar tuition you're using, and use this 1st!
I quit taking guitar lessons long ago because I was frustrated with the lack of system, despite my teacher being an excellent blues and rock player and a good man. He did his best to provide some systematic learning by combining rudimentary music theory with very dry, iterative practice passages. After I quit lessons, I then started playing by ear and began learning that way, by mimic, with some minimal theoretical looks at the pieces that interested me most. I had viewed various teaching materials, never finding anything that could bring it all together and truly unlock the instrument for me. I was tooling through Amazon.com one day, and stumbled across these humble-looking books, finding virtually every bit of feedback complimentary. I was extremely skeptical, being a trained skeptic, but having purchased the boxed set with DVD and worked through all of the first book, plowing through the second and third volumes, I have new-found analytical and improvisational skills and ambitions with the guitar. I have some friends that have asked about learning to play, and the first thing out of my mouth is always "Bill Edwards, Fretboard Logic, Vol. I-III, and DVD." If only I was working this system from the beginning, there's no telling where I would be now. Thank goodness I found these books when I did. I simply won't let anyone else learn guitar without referring them to the Fretboard Logic Series. Thank you, and thank you again to Mr. Edwards. Not only has he created a great product that sells at a very reasonable price that reflects considerable time, understanding, and fine-tuning, but he has done a service to the instrument. Congratulations, and thanks once more.

The Best There Is!
This series is the "must read" for all guitarists, regardless of how long you've been playing. It's a "guided treasure map" to the logic of the fretboard (no pun intended). Once you understand the patterns, your playing and your versatility will improve immediately. I have over 50 guitar books, and this series is the one to buy, if you're buying only one.

A must-have!
This books is the definitive work about hard disks. It explains everything about all kinds of hard disks. Besides that, it also explains details of SCSI devices and RAID. It has a large database with jumper settings and configuration details of hundreds of hard disks, wich is very helpful to technicians. It comes with a CD-ROM full of very usefull utilities.

I recommend it!
This books explains all you want to know about hard disk, including lots of information on jumper settings and hard disk CMOS parameters.

Incredibly helpful for people who must install hard drives
This is the most useful source I have for hard drive jumper settings, CMOS settings, etc. I have three previous editions, and wouldn't part with any of them. I do computer support for a large academic department of a university, and encounter a wide range of drives, adapters, computers, etc. These books have saved me a lot of time, blood, sweat and tears.

How to Help Your Child Successfully Through School and Into the Better Colleges (Two Audio Disc Set)
Published in Audio CD by Paul Vaughn (02 February, 2002)
Author: Paul Vaughn
Amazon base price: $49.50
Average review score:

Tough Love for Modern Day Parents
Paul Vaughn is a professional who has personally tutored and guided over 5000 kids. He has seen it all, heard it all, and, from the rigors of his personal experience, understands most of it all. At a bargain price, he makes available to the parenting masses a great deal of the child-rearing and education-enhancing tips which he has reaped across a career spanning decades.

Paul understands that the modern parent may WANT the best for their child, but, in the process of GIVING the best to their child, often also hinders the child's esteem, independence, determination, and discipline. Somehow, we as modern parents, have forgotten how to give our children the structure and have forgotten how to teach them the discipline they need to become successful and independent adults.

HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD SUCCESSFULLY THROUGH SCHOOL AND INTO THE BETTER COLLEGES gives parents straight-forward advice on how to help your child develop traits early on which enable them to learn. Traits which enable them to control and focus their energies and efforts. And, which ultimately, enable them to qualify for advancement through grade schools, high schools, and into the better colleges.

Sometimes listening to Paul's advice is hard. You may have a hunch that he is right, but changing your routine would prove difficult. Sometimes you sense he is right-on without any effort on your part at all. But however you feel about his advice, his professional opinion can only expand your understanding of how to help your child succeed in learning. And ultimately, your child's ability to learn becomes their ability to succeed in life.

My vote: 5 stars!

ps: Both of my college age kids are happy, healthy, and succeeding at top colleges.

Thanks, Paul.

Excellent information for raising kids.
"Since I have four children someone had given me these CDs for a present but I didn't get around to listening of quite awhile. Wrong! I should have listened earlier to this guy because so much of what he says applies to my kids who are all of different ages, from third grade through senior year. Making up for lost time, I've now listened to them four times and plan to
hear them again."

Informative And Very, Very funny
Author Vaughn has chosen the right medium to get across his "how to" school suggestions to the listener. He tries successfully to make the medicine go down into the parents more easily with his off the wall humor. I liked it better than book form because my wife and I can listen over and over again together. We now understand that from preschool right through high school, we as their parents have more to do with our four kids's succcess in school than any other single factor. It sure helps to know the danger signals. Wish we had it for the first two!

Almost 10 Years and No Updated Version?
I have used this book for years and find it very helpful in selecting Opera recordings on CDs. These are critics who know and care about what they write, listing the many different recordings available (as of 1993 anyway!). However,MUCH has changed in the opera-CD world since then. Just as an example, all the legendary Maria Callas "live" performances of some of her greatest roles have been "officially" released by EMI after many years available only as "bootleg" versions, with a bunch more to be released this November 5th!. This is where the book shows its age and is not an acurate representation of opera on CD circa 2002. However, the selections included and reviewed are quite impressive. Until a newly up-dated edition shows it's face, this book is the one to go with.

VITAL!
I have been using this book for so long that it looks really bad. I can't wait for peguin to release an updated version of this book!

Well-Worn and Dog-Eared!
I purchase an average of 6-8 complete opera CDs per annum, and find this book very valuable in their selection. These authors "know their stuff" -please let them know how much we opera buffs appreciate their book and how about an update? Lots of new recordings(not to mention singers) in the last eight years!! Please keep a good reference going....

The Playboy Guide to Jazz
Published in Paperback by Plume (August, 1998)
Author: Neil Tesser
Amazon base price: $13.95
Used price: $1.99
Buy one from zShops for: $5.99
Aside from its role in encouraging and chronicling the sexual revolution, Playboy has been in the vanguard of reviewing jazz. This guide, written by the magazine's Chicago-based jazz critic, Neil Tesser, is a complete, compact handbook for the general public that offers a well-written and informative look at the essential recordings of "America's classical music."

Putting a jazz guide together is an intricate balancing act: what--and whom--do you include or leave out? Tesser has done a great job of presenting the jazz canon of yesterday and today, but he also gives us a credible glimpse into what we'll be listening to in the future. Starting from 1917 and working up to the 1990s, Tesser lists some of the best jazz albums, including Duke Ellington's The Blanton-Webster Years, Miles Davis's Kind of Blue, Ornette Coleman's avant-garde stylings on Free Jazz, the fusion of Weather Report's Mysterious Traveller, and Wynton Marsalis's neoclassic J Mood. Although the book could have benefited from illustrations and lacks specific Latin jazz recommendations, Tesser's compilation is in the groove and up-to-date. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Average review score:

Useful and informative!
Mr. Tesser has written a guide that is useful as well asinformative. The history of jazz along with his recommendations in aneasy to read format makes this an essential book for anyone from the jazz novice to the fanatic.

History AND Guide to Building a Record Collection
Those who peruse the music shelves at bookstores are faced with basically two choices: either (1) extensive (or long-winded) histories, biographies and theoretical tomes or (2) various "guides to" record selection, printed in tiny type, which are more catalogs than books, and where the realities of building a record collection take a back seat to the compilation of all-encompassing lists of extant recordings.

Tesser's book sythesizes the best of both types. At once history AND a guide to building a record collection, The Playboy Guide is the perfect book for someone like my incipient-collector brother in-law (a real Ella Fitzgeral fan), who needs some guidance in getting his collection more complete and well rounded. At the same time, Tesser places key jazz figures and their recordings in a proper historical context, so you know the when and the how, as well as the why. All in less than 300 pages.

I'm sure that some jazz scholars will grimace at the survey nature of the book (though Tesser's intelligent perspectives, extensive knowledge of the genre, and clear writing may teach them a thing or two). And it's likely obsessive collectors will frown on its inevitable selectivity.

But if you want some expert guidance on what to buy, why you should buy it, and what it means in the historical continuum of jazz, get this book.

A Great Jazz Reference Guide
The author has done a wonderful job of writing a very user-friendly guide to the history of jazz and many of its memorable recordings.

Mr. Tesser eschews the usual encyclopedic format used by many music guides by dividing his book into sections that cover each jazz "era" in chronological order beginning with the 1920s to the present. He presents historical data concerning the trends and major players of an era, and then follows up with recordings he deems essential.

The tone of the book is very appealing. You never feel as though you are being lectured on "America's Classical Music". Instead, Tesser presents his information with clear, easy to understand language and much enthusiasm which makes this book an enjoyable read.

Finally, he makes use of a "hook" called the "Useful Lie" throughout the book that discusses some of the near truths of jazz history. Readers like myself who are somewhat familiar with jazz history but aren't scholars should find this enjoyable.

This is not an all-inclusive history of jazz in that some readers' favorite musicians or recordings may not be discussed. A project like that would obviously take more than one volume. But in under 300 pages, Mr. Tesser has produced a book that is an excellent starting point for the investigation of jazz history and its recordings.

Highly recommended.

Good Book
I really liked this book. It was very informative. Although published by HP Press, the book talks extensively about other Unix platforms as well as NT. The book is probably one year old by now, but I still recommend it. The authors cover almost every hardware option you can think of. A must read for any IT person planning an SAP Implementation.

Excellent reference on SAP Infrastructure
I highly recommend this book to companies that are going to start an SAP project. The book provides the foundation to design and build a solid technical infrastructure for SAP. Moreover, it is easy to read, covers every aspect, and is plenty of examples.

I am an experienced SAP technical consultant and wish this book were available some years ago. On common problem I have seen is that companies don't understand, from the infrastructure point of view, what an SAP project involves. The objective of this book is to make them aware of what they don't know (and could hurt them) at the right time, which is before the project actually starts.

Very Good Book for beginners or experts
I wish that I had this book when we started our SAP project. This book will help anyone who is thinking about installing or upgrading SAP. It helps explain how SAP software will use the hardware. And how all of the pieces fit together. Even though this book is by HP press it stays true to the theme. They do try and "sell" HP hardware or solutions every once in awhile, but for the most part this book is generic in vendor. You won't go wrong with reading this book or just having it for reference the next time you have to upgrade your hardware or if you are having response problems and need to know how to evaluate your hardware. We have been an SAP customer for six years and have grown up with SAP in the US (started at version 2.1 and have just completed our 4.6 upgrade!).

The Ultimate Plectrum Banjo Player's Guide, Compact Disc Companion to Vol.1 & Vol.2 (Set of 2)
Published in Audio CD by SLS & Co. (01 May, 2000)
Authors: David Frey and Susanne Sangiacomo
Amazon base price: $16.99
Average review score:

Finally a banjo players banjo book!
I'm not a bad banjo player, but i'm not a good one either! As plectrum banjo books go I have had them all, but this is by far theee most clear and well written banjo instruction book ever presented. I know this book will help anyone improve their banjo ability and musical knowledge, because it sure has helped me.

A necessary companion to the greatest plectrum book.
If you are like me, living in the middle of plectrum nowhere, you only have a vague idea of how a plectrum banjo should sound. We've heard a lot of Bluegrass, as well tenor banjos tucked away in the background of a Dixieland band, and maybe some Harry Reser or Eddie Peabody virtuoso recordings. Just enough to whet our appetite for the greater range and melody breaks possible on a plectrum banjo.

The typical sound of a 4-string ringing away is a difficult sound to get out of a banjo, however, and the necessary slow beginning steps sound nothing like the real thing. The trouble with most instruction books is that you can't hear them. Playing triplets, for example, is the key to the 4-string banjo sound but a slow triplet sounds nothing at all like a triplet played at the hyper velocity of a professional player.

The Volume I CD takes you through each and every exercise in the book. Not only can you see the exercise, you can hear it played properly at the level of speed compatible with the exercise.

The Volume II CD has a recording of David Frey playing every tune exactly as it is written in the Volume II book. With the CD, you can play along with David as you follow; (a) the standard "lead sheet" notation, (b) the chord chart showing only the chord(s) in each measure so you can chunk along with the backup, or (c) play the chord melody as represented by the chord diagrams for every note in the tune.

The CDs and the books present a fabulous way to learn to play this instrument. I heartily recommend the whole set to anyone with the slightest interest in playing the plectrum banjo.

Finally, somebody does Plectrum! :-)
I was waiting for this book to come out for the last ten years... and I didn't even know it! It is very complete and well organized. The two volume arrangement works quite well. The first volume consists of lessons and techniques. The second volume is filled with songs and sheet music showing you every single note and chord position! What usually slows me down is not knowing a good transition chord fingering... but Dave and Susanne solve that by listing every single note for every song. Wow... just like having a teacher available at all hours of the day or night... and as any dedicated banjo player knows... that's when you practice! Buy it, you won't be sorry. I've been using it for 4 weeks and I'm only seriously up to chapter three so far. It is loaded with good information! Another good feature is that you can scan ahead and pick some items that move you at your own pace. Be sure to get the two CD set that goes with this... now you can practice with the music playing at the proper speed. What'll they think of next?

Frisbee by the Masters

The best book on frisbee sports ever published
I have just read John Kranick's review of the book and must add that apart from being a well-written and well-illustrated guide to frisbee sports for beginners this book is also the ultimate reference for top level players.

If I could award six stars I wouldn't hesitate.

Please reprint this book (I'll buy ten!).

Most detailed/accurate explaination of how a frisbee flies.
Hello, I find it strange I am writting this review. The reason is because its been 21 years since I first read it and up until 2 days ago I had not played frisbee in 3 years.I'm 40 now . I originally read the book while stationed in the Air Force in Austin, Texas. It was big on the local college campus at the time and a small group 6 or so of us decided to give it a try and learn it on our own. After a few days we decided it was a little harder to get the frisbee to go where we wanted it to go than we thought. Exspecially since the wind never stopped blowing in Austin.

Interest among our group was declining when I decided to do a little research on the subject. Thats when I came accross Charles Tips book , Frisbee by the Masters at a local book store. It was a God sent.I read it cover to cover and presented it to the group. Although doubtful they agree to give it a try. Within 4 hours all 6 of us could throw 1 style accurate to 20-50 feet. We were hooked. Within a month we were all throwing 2-6 styles accurate 50 -100 feet.We were even using both hands.

The secret was in the simple chart in the book that showed the bodies position in relation to the angle in degrees at which the frisbee was released. This one page compined with the tips from the Masters brought it all together for all of us.

Although I lost my copy ( never returned by a friend) years ago , I never forgot the title of the book. I always intended to buy another copy.Playing 2 days ago is what brought me to Amazon.com and to this review. I hope the publisher decides to put it back in print.

If your new to Frisbee,or been around and want to learn how to throw 8-10 different styles accurately this is the only book you will ever need. This book really is by the MASTERS.

By the way I can still throw 6 styles pretty accurate.

John Kranick
