DISC

This book is for the casual fan only. A hardcore fan would know just by quickly glancing through it that it contains no remarkable info. It's really only good for quick reference of simple facts and pictures.

This book looks fine enough for kids learning to play the guitar. I bought it for my son for Christmas, to accompany his recently new guitar. However, I was counting on the compact disc being included as stated in the title, but there was none. The book was still shrink wrapped, so I don't think it could have been taken out prior to the sale. Inquire with seller prior to purchasing.

This slim little book is not very useful except for absolute beginners. It really only skims the surface of this topic without going into any meaningful detail about the artists or their context(s). I would recommend either The Rough Guide to World Music or The Musichound Guide to World Music instead. Both go much deeper than a mere list of albums to buy. Overall, this seems like the work of an enthusiast who took a walk through a record store than serious scholarly writing by a professional.

Hands down, this is one of the worst books on "World Music" that I've ever come across. It's superficial, shallow and reveals a serious bias towards the American consumerist mentality. By focusing on the "best" CDs by certain artists, the author only focuses on what's available in CD form and often misses key recordings in many of the genres that he attempts to cover. Even the coverage of his selected CDs lacks depth and is perfuctory at best - it reads more like a slick attempt to cash in on the World Music boom than anything else. "The Rough Guide to World Music" is a far superior and authoritative World Music Text. This one is an embarassment.

This is a rather slim book which covers some 150 artists in brief 1 and 2 page reviews. For someone who knows little of world music, this would be a good place to start, though a true music lover might be annoyed at the lack of scope-- he only lists a few albums by each artist, for example, and there are probably many artists he omits (no entry for Yma Sumac?).

While a complete well-grounded book for the public on the DISC dimensions of behavior is critically needed, Mr. Ritchey seems to have attempted to create an entirely new DISC self-assessment tool that is not based on the original framework of Marston, Jung, Cleaver, Hendrickson, and certainly not Geier who developed the DISC profile Ritchey purportedly has used for years. A publication for the masses who have been exposed to DISC behavior concepts, assessments, profiles, "tests", and tools is sorely needed. This book adds not to clarity, but to the confusion of the users of DISC tools for personal and professional growth. DISC conceptually is a strong assessment in today's marketplace. Used correctly a DISC Profile will create "miracles." Not only is the book gravely inaccurate and misleading in places (specifically the history section), it provides "tests" for the public that are invalid, unreliable, and inaccurate. I was very disappointed in this book.

This book brings DiSC to life, and makes it understandable. It contains a detailed description of the various behavioral style combinations that are possible, and does a good job of explaining them in simple language, without much of the technical jargon that can sometimes accompany assessment tools.

The book includes a DiSC assessment tool, which is somewhat different than what is available commercially, but seemed accurate when I compared my results vs. other versions.

I've used DiSC® with several clients of mine. We usually spend class time explaining DiSC® and the theories behind it. This book could be easily used as pre-work to save class time during any training or consulting intervention involving behaviors, conflict, communication, team-building, management or leadership development.

I found this book light reading with virtually every sentence applicable to the real world. If you are an HRD, Training, Business or Personal Coach or Consulting Professional, you need this book in your toolkit!

I highly recommend this book to readers of all ages.

This book should be re-titled "Howard Blumenthal's Personal CD Collection". The artists that he lists are only a handful of jazz giants and innovators (he lists benny green as being one of the 100 greats, without a mention about Scott Joplin!). The selections do not contain a personnel listing (a must when it comes to jazz music), and there are a number of inaccurate facts (i.e. naming jelly roll morton's 1926 band as being the Red Hot Chili Peppers, a punk/funk group of the 80/90's. the 1926 band was the Red Hot Peppers.) While this may appear as nit-picking, it still makes the book a minor amongst the other greats (see: the history of jazz, Ted Gioia). Get the Penguin Guide instead.

This is a must-have reference book that is of great use to the jazz aficionado. It does have one glaring flaw, though -- not enough coverage of bossa nova and jazz influenced by Brazilian music (think of the hundreds of jazz interpretations of Jobim's compositions). For that I would recommend "The Brazilian Sound," which includes 1,000 titles in its discography.

It may or may not be useful for people who want to learn with book and CD, but I wanted something I could learn from driving my car or in the background at home when doing other things. All of the Italian is on the CD's, with no English. So I will probably not learn one word of Italian, and will order a course from the library. For people with time to do concentrated study I understand the economy and efficiency of having only the Italian on CD's, plus you see the spelling in the books. For me it was not the right course.

Well, that`s a good enough course you can get for this small money. In fact, if you need to learn just some basic "tourist Italian" this course is quite fine - but not if you really want to speak it. The thing is, it seems hard to obtain any real conversational skills just by memorizing phrases. Also, the recording doesn`t always correspond to the book.

I think the author is good.

As a source of information on this group pygmies and their music this book is worth plowing through to almost the end.

While Louis Sarno does not have a captivating style of writing, the book does provide a unique perspective of one man's journey in Central Africa to find the Ba-benjelle pygmies and their music.

The sections on the dances, hunting, bees and duikers, etc. are interesting enough to keep one reading. The section on his love/obsession for Ngbali alternatly leaves you wishing he would succeed,scream exploitation and wondering if he really thought he wasn't being used. It is at this point, one wants to skip the last 40 or so pages.

The bottom line is make the effort to discover his journey and then go buy the music. You will be glad you did.

I wanted to prepare for the French SAT II subject test, and I purchased this book because most of Barron's test prep books are excellent. But I had several problems with this book. First, there is no scaled score conversion table in the book. Also, the practice tests were not at all like the actual SATII in length or difficulty. The real SATII I took was much more difficult, and although it too had 85 questions, the test took me almost twice as long to complete.
A good alternative to this book is the one put out by the College Board, which includes real, recently administered, SAT II tests. The practice test provided is much more indicative of the actual length and difficulty of the test, and it comes with a scale score conversion chart so you can see how well you would do in comparison to other high school students.

I bought this CD to help me repair my A/C system on my 83 Volvo. What a joke! I want to return it! There is more information in my $4.00 Haynes repair manual.

If it contain ledgeable info. about wire diagram for 1983 Volvo 240 DL it will be great.

I purchased this CD for my 1985 Mercedes 300sd. It provided little information on vehicle repair.It had all the service bulletins however.If you want that, then I recommend the cd. However, If you are looking for a REPAIR guide, this CD is not for you.
