Harry Potter und der Steinder Weisen
Alles, das ich über das Buch sagen kann, ist, daß ich es liebte, und ich glaube, daß es sehr wert Leseversuch es ist.

Wunderbar
Chances are if your thinking on buying this book in German, you've probably already read the Englsih version, so I won't bog you down with any lengthy opinion on the story itself except to say it is a modern classic, full of mystery and suspense that can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike.

Foreign language versions of English novels are notoriously difficult to translate, largely due to the high number of English words which have no exact translation in say, German or French. But on the whole, this was an exceptionally translated peice, with no major blunders sticking out (the Spanish version is full of them) The most obvious chnage is of "Hermione" to "Hermine" Perhaps Hermione would feel strange to pronounce to a native German speaker, not sure on that one.

A lot of people will tell you Spanish and French are far easier to learn than German. I found German more fun to learn, most people who say it is a difficult, technical language do not know that English and German belong in the same group of languages (Germanic) French, Spanish and Italian are in a completely different group (Romantic) So to brush up on language skills, or just to have fun reading a novel in another language, HP is probably the most fun and easy to understand novel on the market.

An excellent translation
This translation of Harry Potter pulled even this native speaker of English along almost as well as the original book, and I would recommend it for anyone who's had a couple of years of German as a skill and vocabulary builder. If you're struggling with Goethe or Thomas Mann, you need something that will show you that German can be fun to read, and this book will do the trick nicely. I suppose once could carp at a few things here and there, but this translation is so superior to the French translation that I wouldn't waste my time doing that, except to mention that Hermione's name has for some reason been changed to Hermine. If you get stuck, at least the trot's readily available!

Best DJ Book EVER!
Simply the BEST. If you're a DJ and don't own this book, you're probably a terrible DJ. BUY THYIS BOOK!!!

Ha ha ha ha ha!!!
All I can say is that this is so ridiculous. I read this book at the library and I couldn't stop laughing. So DJs have talant? It takes years to master the 'art' of playing a record? Listen to me and listen well, you want respect, girls, and money? Let the losers be DJs. Musicians with talant do just that, make music, with instruments. Go buy a guitar.

This book had some elementary basics on sound levels and accoustics, but clubs have people to do that while your setting up your band, so what's the point?

This book rocks!
I just recently started taking DJ classes, and this book has been tremendous help. Historically, the barriers to entry have been a bit high in the DJ field, often leaving beginners like myself wondering where to start: what equipment do I need? what are the fundamentals I have to work on? The book fills this gap, providing a comprehensive guide on equipment, techniques, online resources and the general nature of the industry in a very clear format. I've browsed through other books on this subject (a rather limited selection) and none of them come close in terms of breadth and quality.

The book hits on a lot of key points and has an encouraging tone, balanced out by a bit of sarcastic humor. For instance, it notes the likely frustrations from trying a new technique (yes, everyone stinks in the beginning), but this just requires practice, practice, practice. The book has also been right on the mark about how most people in the field, from experienced DJs to record store operators, are quite helpful. Even when I pass the beginner stage, it will surely be a useful reference well into the future.

Have Mercy Baby, He's Howling in Rock-N-Roll Heaven
Wolfman Jack "was" the ultimate D.J of all time. No one will ever fill his shoes. This book defines how his career got started, but it's too bad it wasn't accompanied by an "audio". You can't learn about or know "Wolfman" unless you've heard one of his shows. I was stunned that the entertainment world never gave him a tribute! But he "did"it in the way he lived his life! HAVE MERCY WOLFMAN. (insert a HOWL here!)

HAVE MERCY! Relives the era but fails to capture THE VOICE.
HAVE MERCY! takes a wild ride through an important era of broadcast history. HAVE MERCY! captures the renegade spirit that led a few pirates and pioneers to take risks for entertainment sake. HAVE MERCY! does a superb job of describing the times and painting a picture of what those who ventured into early rock were up against. HAVE MERCY! helps us to better understand what made one white boy howl in the night - and others sing the blues. HAVE MERCY! makes clear the impact of radio in the early days of rock-n-roll. Its a classic expose' on pop culture. HAVE MERCY! shows the drive and determination and focus and endurance and high energy it took to succeed in a highly competetive industry. HAVE MERCY! catches the gimmicks and the glamour. HAVE MERCY! drops all the right names in all the right places. HAVE MERCY! doesn't shy away from revealing the hazards, the hardships, the dirty deals and the difficult decisions either. HAVE MERCY! is a roller coaster without seatbelts - a wooden one with plenty of bumps and sharp turns and deep drops along the way. HAVE MERCY! chronicles the life of a street tough kid with a dream - someone least likely to succeed - who beat the odds and made it. HAVE MERCY! relives the roots of rock as told through THE VOICE that spoke for a whole generation. HAVE MERCY! grabs onto the craziness of THE VOICE but doesn't see the flip side. Nothing is revealed about the inner stuff the Wolfman was made of. HAVE MERCY! tells the what, when and where of Wolfman's story but fails to communicate the why well enough for reader's know who the Wolfman really was. Its as if the author is writing from a distance - on the outside looking in when a more compelling biography would be told from the inside looking out. HAVE MERCY! recants the making of the personality . . . but fails to see beyond the legend the Wolfman had become. If I hadn't already known the huge impact Wolfman had on my generation, I'm not sure I would've comprehended it from the book. The author tries, but fails to show the true connection between THE VOICE and his listeners. HAVE MERCY! gets the facts but not the feelings. Its like when a record company measures the quality of a song by its sales instead of its message or craftmanship. HAVE MERCY! records details but never gets the big picture. The author never catches the vision. He rides with the Wolfman but never contemplates the reason. He notes the Wolf's charisma but never understands it. Its clearly too overwhelming to describe and so its treated almost like an after-thought. Not a lot of effort goes into getting to know Wolf's fans or measuring his impact on the world around him either. HAVE MERCY! never sees the Wolfman as a wholistic being - the author never gets into his soul the way I, the reader, wanted him to. And so, the Wolfman came across as a wild, but somewhat packaged, entertainer with a well inflated ego - rather than a dedicated spokesman whose main mission may have been just to spread some joy. What if the radio was nothing more than a vehicle to enable the Wolfman to accomplish that goal? HAVE MERCY! only suggests such honorable motives - instead the author dwells on stereotypical indicators that suggest the Wolf was mostly after fortune and fame. The Wolfman is depicted as a relentless industry climber willing to do just about anything to claw his way to the top. HAVE MERCY! had me asking whatever happened to Robert Smith? Did he completely disappear whenever the Wolf came out to play? If HAVE MERCY! were an instruction manual on how-to develop a strong stage personality the author would succeed in covering the steps and listing the most sensational ingredients needed - but he'd fail to give a clue as to what makes the recipe work. The author wasn't able to make me feel the fire and the author didn't manage to make the Wolfman bleed. His pen barely scraped the surface. Had it dug deeper it may have gotten to the heart of the story. A good book gets the info, keeps the pace and tells an interesting story - but a great book goes beyond the expected by sharing keen insights and by giving the reader something valuable to hang onto long after the last page is read. HAVE MERCY! is a good book, not a great one. I walked away exhausted from a really wild journey - but still not certain as to who I'd shared it with. That's a shame because I'm certain there was more to the Wolfman than the world ever got a chance to know, or this author ever managed to uncover.

Have Mercy for sure!!
I read the book after he died. What a book!! The book takes the reader for a ride with a character that the reader will never forget!

The book will make a great movie and I hope that there is a movie made from the book.

I can not wait till the publisher starts publishing the book again because I will buy another one for sure.

HAVE MERCY!!

Very Pleased
The shipment was rec'd in brand new packaging. The cassettes are clear and easy listening. I purchased this for listening in my car and it is perfect.

The very best Audio Bible available
This reading of the King James Version Bible by Alexander Scourby is a treasure! I own or have listened to most of the other audio Bibles out there and there just is no comparison. Scourby reads in a transparent manner that allows the Bible to come alive. With some audio Bibles I have a hard time listening through the reader's radio-announcer inflections to the underlying message. Not so with Scourby, he justly earns his title of the "Voice of the Bible".

I recommend this Audio CD highly. I don't believe you will be disappointed with it in any way.

A Great work
I wonder when this will be available in CD format? My tapes have had it!

Doesn't read like a game
As Howard Cosell titled his autobiography, "I never played the game." I don't even have a CD-ROM drive yet. But I would have had to have been living in a fissure in the earth to be totally clueless about MYST, the phenomenally popular CD-ROM game that has become multimedia's first bestseller and first classic. From people who have played it, I know that MYST is more than a game, it is an experience--an immersion into another world, where things are strange and wonderful. The game works, they say, because it is as rich in its complex storyline as it is in its state-of-the-art graphics.

MYST is more than a game in another respect as well now, with the publication of Myst: The Book of Atrus written by the game's authors, Rand and Robyn Miller, in collaboration with David Wingrove (author of the Chung Kuo series of science fiction novels). A novel based on the game was inevitable, given the rich source material. The fact that the Millers chose to write the book themselves rather than sharecrop it to a third party showed an extreme level of hubris. Doubtless the y realized this, and approached Wingrove as an expert novelist, to help them accomplish a seamless transition from computer game to novel.

Myst: The Book of Atrus is a story that details the background behind the story of the CD-ROM, much like J.R.R. Tolkien's The Silmarillion is the background behind The Lord of the Rings. The comparison is particularly apt--the brothers Miller, like Tolkien, are meticulous craftsmen and took the time to build the myths and legends of their world, creating a much more complex and involving tale in the process. Atrus, the protagonist of this novel, is the father of the two brothers upon which the story of the CD-ROM is based. The story itself is not that unusual for fantasy--a young boy is orphaned by the death of his mother and the disappearance of his father. Raised by his grandmother, he comes to value her teaching but longs for more than the simple life that she has made for herself. Then the father returns, demanding his son to follow him to help reestablish their noble race, the D'Ni.

But as any reader knows, it is not the simple plot that defines a book, but the details that embellish a novel, and the Millers and Wingrove have provided not only the embellishment, but the exhilaration of wonder necessary for a genre novel. The conflict between authoritarian parents and inquisitive children, between goals and means, are the basic building blocks of any good work of fiction, and the authors do not neglect it. But it is in the description and workings of The Art, the "science" behind the world creation of the D'Ni, that brings to the book its driving interest and captivation. I am sure it is no accident that The Art, with its emphasis on the power of the written word, of the proper placement of description, also describes the process of novel creation itself; in academic circles, this self-reflection is called metafiction, and the authors here carry it off with panache if not subtlety. What is interesting is that this description of The Art can be broadened to include any act of creation, with a special nod to the creation of an artificial world such as those portrayed in novels, movies, and multimedia computer games.

I thought it would be interesting to read Myst: The Book of Atrus and see if it was a self-contained piece of fiction that could be enjoyed by those of use who remain CD-ROM challenged. Does Myst: The Story of Atrus stand alone? Yes, and surprisingly well. I have no doubt that this would have been well received without the phenomena of the game behind it. And, unlike Tolkien's The Silmarillion, this was a book that the authors had the opportunity to polish and prepare for their audience. Tolkien's masterpiece spawned the modern fantasy industry, of which some novels barely masked their inspiration. Myst has already inspired several productions similar in nature--as well as a couple of parodies, the next sincerest form of flattery. The publication of this pre-history will only further cement its seminal nature on the burgeoning multimedia industry.

Beautiful book. Interesting Story.
Every reader who enjoyed the Myst and Riven games ought to look at this book, at least for a few chapters. The story of Atrus, his grandmother Anna, and his father Gehn is very interesting albeit slow-paced and a little shallow. The quality of writing is not Grade A, but I wasn't disappointed by any bold errors. I merely wanted to read more depth in everything: in the beautiful scenery and in the characters. As an amateur writer myself, I think the story could have been told at the same pace with much more interesting depth built into every sentence.

This is the story before Myst, the first CD-Rom game and still one of the top ten best adventure games ever. It won't explain why Sirrus and Achenar become the upstanding characters they are in the game, but it does show Catherine and Atrus initial contact with each other and the relationship that blooms from that adventure. It also paints Gehn in interesting colors and shows how Atrus proves the strength of this character.

I do recommend this book to fantasy readers, especially Myst and Riven fans, despite my stylistic complaints It's a wonderful fantasy to ponder.

Myst: The Book of Atrus
Adventure/ PC Game Based

Ok, for the most part, this book was awesome. It gave some great creativity to the story and kept the plot going. Some more simple words may have helped the visual progress but for the most part, this book was easy to picture.

My best +'s for the book is how the authors described the sceneries of the worlds or as the call them, Ages. Also, the story was too fascinating to pass up! (About creating your own worlds by writing in a special, ancient D'Ni book. You know, become a god of your favorite place!) The combination of the two really brought out the true excitement of reading Myst. [read up on the summary]

The only - of the book was that the words were a little complicated to understand. More of a 15 and up age group I suppose. It's kinda hard to follow when you don't know where in the book it is trying to describe.

I loved how the end of the book ended! I think that it changed how you thought it would end a thousand times over(that's sarcasm FYI) before you finally knew what really happened. It really kept reading you until the book was over.

The best part is that it's based off of the PC game Myst! I know all you gamers out there aren't heavy readers but if you are a fan of Myst, this is the book for you! If you like the story behind the game, you'll really like the book!

Thanks for the time! Check out the summary here or whatever to get a better idea. It's a good adventure book to look into.

Good start
I am in a group with over 4,000 people and frequently record tapes for my downline. These include many how to's on sponsoring, training, attitude etc.

Many people have suggested that I go national and offer these tapes to the masses. Judy Byers book was recommended to me as the resource to use.

The book is a little dated but still offers powerful information. I had a basic understanding on what to do before reading Byers book but came away with much information.

My only question is why Ms. Byers does not offer this program on audio?

Self-Publishing Spoken-Word Audio
Authors should spin off their books into audio products to wring maximum value out of their work. You will discover how easy it is to create and sell your own spoken-word audio tapes, CDs and downloads. Words on Tape guides you from initial planning through production to selling your new product. Judy Byers has been in the business since 1987. Prior to that she was a radio producer/commentator; she has a gorgeous voice. This is the only book on the subject and it is an outstanding step-by-step guide. DanPoynter@ParaPublishing.com

Excellent guide to producing books on tape
Judy Byers is a nationally known consultant to publishing companies. She has specialized in spoken-word audio since 1987. Prior to that she was a radio producer/commentator for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and worked for U.S. radio and television stations. She owns Audio Cassette Producers in Denver, Colorado. The audio-cassette market collects over $4 billion a year in sales, and Words on Tape is an invaluable, fact-filled resource for anyone who hopes to insert themselves in this market. This 230-page trade paperback has a table of contents, an index, and offers multiple appendices, including a comprehensive list of resources, fill-in forms for audio production, and templates to use for audio cassettes. The subjects covered in the main body of the text include the following (with each chapter providing its own particular list of resources): (1) the market for audio publishing; (2) what sells and steps in production; (3) planning your project; (4) copyrights, contracts and ISBN's; (5) budgeting your time and money; (6) scripts and narrators; (7) choosing the right packaging for your audio book; (8) how the production studio works and how much time it takes to record a tape in the studio; (9) what happens at the time of recording; (10) editing the audio tape; (11) duplication and labeling; (12) marketing and sales; (13) selling to bookstores and libraries; (14) information on CD's. This book is a fascinating, extremely practical guide for anyone who has ever wondered what would be involved in getting their words on tape, from self-publishers, to mainstream-published nonfiction writers, to companies offering business seminars. In addition, many authors who have published fiction through mainstream publishers have found that it is an excellent marketing and promotion method to tape their own audio how-to-write-fiction lectures and market them to would-be fiction writers and fans. You can't miss with this book. Highly recommended!

A useful addition to your Titanic library
In the trade, we refer to this as a book "printed as a remainder," i.e. a book intended to be sold inexpensively. But for an inexpensive book, Leo Marriott's "Titanic" is well worth having. Its selection of photographs is excellent and include real rarities like early construction photos of Olympic (it's worth noting here that a lot of the pictures printed as being of the Titanic, especially shots of her interior and many construction shots, are actually of Olympic. The reason is simple; Olympic was available for photography a lot longer than her sister ship was!), many of the famous Father Browne photographs (Browne, at the time in the novitiate and later a Jesuit priest, travelled from Southhampton to Queenstown on the maiden voyage and snapped away the entire time; Cameron paid tribute to one of his photos in his movie), and shots of the interior of an English hotel which is furnished with interiors torn out of the Olympic when she was broken up. Marriott also discusses the filmography of the Titanic disaster. Ignore the occasional typos; the book is well worth the price.

beautiful book
This is a beautiful book. the pictures are outstanding & the information is total. It is a book you will keep out on the table in sight.

FASCINATING!!!!!!!!!!
Very good. This book yells out"Hey,read me!". I would recommend this book to you. It has very good pictures that you would love.

Pure Brain Candy
Somehow I found a copy of this book sitting on my parent's coffee table. I picked it up and read it at the tender age of 13. I have never let it leave my side since. This book is pure brain candy. The storyline is absolutely thrilling, the characters are well thought out, and the suspense is incredible. I certainly wouldn't call it "modern literature" but it rates in the same category as "Bright Lights Big City" and "Story of My Life".

This Book DESERVES to be a movie.
I am currently adapting FUEL INJECTED DREAMS into screenplay form and I must say that it is the most challenging venture of my life. I love this book more than any I have read in the last ten years and must say that I am truly blessed to be in the position that I am in at this moment. Sadly, author James Robert Baker is no longer with us but I can only hope to do his incredible novel the justice it deserves. By all means, if you can find it, FIND IT! You won't be sorry. Hopefully, a reprinting of the book will come about upon release of the film.

Quite simply, AWESOME!
Like the previous reviewer, I read the screenplay first (it is currently circulating throughout the Hollywood community) and I must say that the STORY of this book is amazing, as amazing as the almost perfect distillation of such in the screenplay. James Robert Baker is a force to be reckoned with and I hope we can all look forward to many years worth of subsequent genius work by him. Incidentally, FUEL-INJECTED DREAMS would make an excellent film and, if I have any say in it, WILL make an excellent film. Of course, expect a reprinting of the novel around the time of the film's release.

Substituting opinion for fact
Mr. Harrison is probably a good mobile dj but he makes the mistake of assuming regional preferences (such as clients not wanting lighting) and that most weddings go 4 hours is true all over. More importantly, there are numerous occasions where he states his opinion as fact. If these were truly facts, there would be documentation to back them up. There is a lot of good advice in this book but it's mixed in with a lot of opinions and outdated information which the target audience would like have difficulty sifting through.

Must read for all brides and DJs too!
I love this book! As a DJ with 15 years in the business, the author has said what everyone else was afraid to say. This is the all-out truth about DJ myths and marketing. Highly recommend this book.

A "MUST HAVE" for anyone looking for a DJ!!
In such a vast field as DJ services, it nice to be able to find the true gems among the pack. This book was instrumental in helping me select a DJ for my wedding, and I was EXTREMELY pleased with the results. If you want to know how to identify a "line" when you hear one from a DJ, GET THIS BOOK!
