Memories Come AliveReview Date: 2000-04-04
As the 2nd and 5th Ranger Bns. interacted on many missions of WWII, this vividly written account of the assault on the French beaches - and the awesome task of gaining a foothold from which to advance into Europe - brings that time alive to all Rangers.
Lt. Col. Ronald Lane captures the emotions and pride of all of us, as he sees that time through the eyes of those he interviewed for his book. As a later Airborne Ranger in Viet Nam, he better understands and narrates the stories of the WWII Rangers and relates them so realistically that they are absorbing and meaningful to soldiers and civilians alike. In this book, you will put yourself into the body of each Ranger making history at that time. USER-LOCATION: REVIEW: As a 5th Battalion Ranger reading Ron Lane's true story, memories of the first days of the Normandy invasion come alive as if they happened yesterday.

Beyond the usual UFO literatureReview Date: 2005-07-22
The story of Joy Gilbert (4 chapters), tells of her spiritual beginnings with transcendental meditation. From there she moves on to a Tibetan Lama who further leads her along the pathway to enlightenment. Joy denies her early abduction experiences but later learns she has to explore and accept them. For me her story was the crown jewel of the book because it tied together many elements I also have an interest in - meditation, Tibetan wisdom, and enlightenment. Her journey culminates as her ET family, a race of higher beings, administers the final awakening during an "abduction", telling her It's Time to Remember. The veil of forgetfulness slips away, her ego is shattered, and she slips into full Unity Consciousness.
The author further explores the star visitor phenomena in terms of the Vedic literature of the East and gives many first hand accounts of realization experiences. Finally the book examines the social forces that are hindering our awareness expansion and how our awakening might proceed.
There are a few parts near the beginning that bogged down for me as the author considers and eliminates psychological states and theories that could explain contactee experiences as hallucinations, delusions, etc, but I recognize the value in this for skeptical readers.
Overall, I enjoy books that concentrate on the message or impact of ET contact. I would also recommend Talking to Extraterrestrials by Lisette Larkins or Dr. Huntley's ETs and Aliens (Who are they? and Why are they here?). Another is Dr. Boylan's Close Extraterrestrial Encounters - Positive Experiences with Mysterious Visitors - a very down to earth, no nonsense book that also presents their wisdom as given to contactees.
I highly recommend Sacred Encounters to anyone who wants to go beyond the usual sightings and abduction literature and tie the topic into metaphysical realms of thought.

The book is great. It covers a lot --- not just The Art of War, though that's included. It is a complete study of the Chinese strategies of war and I recommend it to those interested in this topic.

1) T'ai Kung's Six Secret Teachings
2) The Methods of Ssu-ma
3) Sun-tzu's Art of War
4) Wu-tzu
5) Wei Liao-tzu
6) Three Strategies of Huang Shih-kung
7) Questions and Replies between T'ang T'ai-tsung and Li Wei-kung
Hope that helps.
My one complaint about this book is that it uses the Wade-Giles transliteration rather than Pinyin, which is what everyone, including China, is using. Wade-Giles is now over 35 years outmoded, and can be very confusing for the uninitiated. Compare Ssu-ma I (Wade-Giles) with Sima Yi (Pinyin). Would you know that they're the same bloke? (If you do, bravo.) I assume this speaks to the age of the translation rather than an editorial choice, but it's pretty annoying that they didn't update it.
If you think you might like this book, but want more of a story than essays/discourses, I recommend 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms.' It's very long, but well-loved in most regions of Asia, and with good reason. Also, search for Zhuge Liang's commentary on 'The Art of War.' It's all on Amazon.
An engaging bookReview Date: 2004-03-02
Sun Tzu's "Art of War" is in there, but I especially like
Tao Tai Kung (or "The secret teachings of the Tai Kung") The most entertaining thing about this work is that it is a beautiful
example of a different world view. It was an excellent introduction to an entire philosophy.
(look for surprising parallels
twixt this and Adam Smith's "...Wealth of Nations", with an eastern perspective.)
An oustanding addition to any library!Review Date: 2001-07-23
Regarding the first issue, Sawyer has done a superb job in both his translation, and in his historical research. The prose is easy to read and understand, but the essential, almost poetic, essence of the original language has not been sacrificed. Furthermore, each piece is prefaced by a brief, but detailed, overview of the work including a biography of the author, or possible authors, and a synopsis of the historical context in which the work was created. In addition, the book is heavily footnoted, which allows the reader to fully comprehend each piece, without the primary texts being chopped up.
Regarding the second angle, I was genuinely astonished by how pertinent theses works are to modern military thinking. For such primitive (chronologically, not intellectually) works, they do a superb job of capturing the key elements of strategic thinking: maneuver, logistics, terrain, combined arms and command hierarchy. Moreover, they are extremely sophisticated in their consideration of Grand Strategy and the mobilization of the population. While these works are by no means a blue print for a modern army (the codes of conduct are draconian, to say the least), they undoubtedly provide a framework for the analysis/planning of modern operations.
This is truly a superb work that captures both the philosophical and the practical aspects of some of the most ancient books on the planet. Furthermore, it is a fascinating look at ancient Chinese history. It is truly a must read for anyone interested in military theory or international relations, particularly with China once again ascendant on the world stage.

Fantastic for all black womenReview Date: 2001-10-24
A biz book packed full of good information that comes across as being written by a life coach, financial advisor, and biz
coach.Review Date: 2007-12-15
I found this book to be good. It was packed full of information and is certainly worth its sales price. I would have enjoyed it more if it had been a little less pro black woman and complained less about racism and sexism. But the author apparently thought it was necessary to include such verbage in order to connect with her target audience.
The author is a registered investment advisor who has two businesses that she runs: (1) a financial and small business consulting firm, and (2) a personal financial advisory firm. In a nutshell, she is a consultant by trade. I see some similarities to what she does and what Suze Orman does. They are both basically CFPs who market themselves through writing books, making presentations, and getting media exposure.
As I read this book I wasn't sure if the author in writing it was being a Life Coach, a Financial Advisor, or a Business Coach. The title of this book says that the book is a "Guide to Starting Your Own Business." As a result, I expected to hear exclusively from a business coach. But chapters 1 through 4 about personal faith, purpose, and goals didn't seem to me to relate to starting a business.
For me, a "guide" is something that offers basic information or instruction and shows the way by leading, directing, or advising. As a result, this book was supposed to advise me as to how to start my own business. Unfortunately it did not do this for me very well. While it covered business plans (Chapter 12), choice of entity (Chapter 7), financing your startup (Chapter 8), cash flow and recordkeeping (Chaper 9), and marketing (chapters 14 & 15), it did not do them in a step 1, step 2, step 3 kind of way. That's what I expected when I started reading this book which the title says is a guide.
The book is also dated. Coverage of choice of entity is not current. Limited liability companies (LLCs) are available throughout the US now. And their popularity has basically made partnerships, limited partnerships, and S Corps a thing of the past.
The four types of businesses discussed in Chapter 10 seemed odd to me. The auther suggests the four basic types of businesses are: product, service, mail order, and retail/restaurant. I had hoped that the author in this book would have dissected the following generic business models in detail:
>>Retail businesses
>>Service oriented businesses (part service and part product)
>>Product oriented business (part product and part service)
>>Personal service business (all personal services)
>>Distribution companies
>>Internet companies
Mail order today is pretty much an online business. And that category probably falls under Internet Companies. And what's the difference between a product business and a retail business? Don't retail businesses sell products?
And there is no talk in this book of Web sites as a marketing tool. Just another reason this book is dated. Also, I found the inclusion of Chapter 11 on franchises to be unnecessary. The target audience of this book is supposedly black women who want to BECOME financially independent. For the most part, franchises are only an option for women who are already financially independent or wealthy. I think the book would have been better if the chapter on franchising had been left out. All in all, not a bad book. 4 stars!

Outstanding Work on Military Justice in a War ZoneReview Date: 2007-10-10
Although this book is history, it reads like a novel. Solis brings the tension of the battlefield and the drama of the courtroom alive in this book. And he also brings alive the legal maneuvering before each court-martial as the prosecutors, defense counsel, and - in some cases - civilian defense counsel, all "prepared the battlefield" before each court-martial.
As a former practitioner of military justice, Solis understands the nuances and intricacies of military justice, staff work on a division staff, and the actual role of commanders in the process. He methodically explains how military justice works in a deployed environment (the rules are the same, but there are many "real-world" problems such as witness production and transportation that can threaten an otherwise sound case).
Finally, Solis also gives glimpses of the bigger picture of the Vietnam War in 1970: the USMC manpower problems with Project 100,000, law of war training issues, the moral problems dealt with by Marines facing women and children fighters, etc. And, after telling the full post-trial stories of the convicted Marines (that went on for over 10 years), Solis wraps up with some conclusions about what went wrong, what went right, and suggestions for improving the military justice system (which are especially relevant now that we are again trying important courts-martial in deployed environments).
"Son Thang" is an outstanding book and a very easy read. Anyone interested in the Vietnam War, military justice, or in trial work in general should read it.

Why I wrote SOS Help For EmotionsReview Date: 2004-11-16
The five abilities of emotional intelligence are: 1. knowing our emotions, 2. managing our emotions, 3. recognizing emotions in others, 4. managing relationships with others, and 5. motivating ourselves to achieve our goals. I believe that people can increase their emotional intelligence using the methods of cognitive behavior therapy as presented in "SOS Help For Emotions."
Dr. Albert Ellis, the best known therapist in the United States says regarding SOS, "Beautifully captures the spirit of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (cognitive behavior therapy) in concise, evocative, and humorous language. A gem of an introduction to REBT." The director of professional education at Albert Ellis Institute says, "It's spectacular! SOS is the best self-help book on Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy that I have seen." Dr. Donald Beal, a practicing cognitive therapist says, "SOS is a beautiful work! The use of cartoons, figures, and illustrations is quite engaging." SOS is available in Turkish, Chinese, and Korean, as well as English.
I am eager to share insights from cognitive behavior therapy with people (including older teens) who are not seeing therapists but who want to learn on their own, how to improve their emotional intelligence and their ability to manage their emotions and behavior. I used 100 illustrations and boxes in SOS to make reading interesting and easy for busy people. Seeing SOS in print is a dream I have had for over 15 years. Currently I am working on a video-based education program based on SOS Help For Emotions.

A must read for menReview Date: 2006-04-04
Chapter 3 has one of the great jokes but overall it is a downer. The rest of the book is quite up beat so I recommend skipping Chapter 3 until you have read some of the other chapters. Men should not skip Chapter 6 on lesbian relationships since it contains very wise quotations that apply equally to heterosexual relationships.
Of the 400 diverse women who responded to the authors' non-random survey, 57% said they were either passionate or satisfied with their partner as a lover. Only 10% said they were either uninterested or resentful toward their partner. 22% said they currently did not have a partner and 11% did not answer the question. That is very encouraging news. The book provides lots of useful suggestions on how men can help their lovers stay in the passionate or satisfied category.
