Hokusai is one of the great landscape artists, and these are some of his best works, in nice impressions and clear colors. Unfortunately, the reproductions are TOO SMALL, in many cases half the original size, which especially diminishes the impact of landscapes. Maddeningly, the pictures in horizontal format are printed horizontally, so that their large dimension is reduced to the small dimension of the book page, leaving a large blank space beneath: they are MINUSCULE. What genius arranged this?

This problem is difficult to spot browsing on a computer, so beware!

This book was produced as he was shown at the Royal Academy in London. I begged the poster at the tourist-board in Stockholm and got my parents to buy the hardcover version at the exhibition. Collecting Hiroshige prints in Stockholm I would have loved to see them in London, but the book is the second best thing. The reproductions are terrific, the text short but informative. All the different subjects of Hiroshige are displayed, landscapes, fan motives, fish, flowers and so on. Get it and then get some real prints!

Quick, stop reading this review and buy this Hardcover book in New or Like New condition now, while you can. For, this is one of the greastest modern so-called 'coffee table' art books that I have come across. Too often these days one finds that such art books which should be large, lushly produced, lovingly put together and brilliantly written are unfortunately done with punk production values resulting in poor reproductions on cheap looking paper stock and accompanied by unedifying, often stultifying essays. Not this one. As I said above it is one of the most impressive art books that I have come across in twenty years of buying them. It is printed and bound in Germany which in itself is commendable and noteworthy because it is quite expensive to produce a book there. I am so glad they did because, as good as they are, Italy and Hong Kong, two places commonly used for producing today's art books, just don't do as good a job as Prestel has done in Germany. This book was originally produced to accompany an exhibition at the Royal Academy of the Arts during 1997. As such, it commanded a skilled and erudite staff of authors to craft both an accurate history and an illuminating commentary of the artist and his art. They are: Matthi Forrer, author of a similar book on Hokusai; Suzuki Juzo, the author of the standard monograph on Hiroshige; and Henry Smith a Professor of Japanese History at Columbia U. You will come back to this book many times over the years because there is so darned much information to absorb, visually and intellectually and because the publisher's top notch production values have accurately captured the spirit and beauty of Hiroshige's Woodblock Prints. This is the sort of book that will be actively sought out by art book collectors in years to come. This is why I say, buy it now, while you can at such a low price. You won't be sorry.

This is a beautiful Catholic Bible. It's the approved version for a Bible study I've started through my church. The large print makes it so much more readable for 60-year-old eyes. It is a handful, weighing about 5 lbs. There are lovely color photos galore, beautiful illustrations of all four Mysteries of the Rosary, and so much more. I recommend this wholeheartedly.

We just set up a family altar and I decided that I wanted a beautiful, large print "family" Bible to keep on a stand at the center of it. I searched a lot on-line and had ordered a Bible from another publisher (the illustrations in which I didn't like) before I found this one. This Bible was everything I was looking for: beautiful, large print, having pages on which to write your family information and having exquisite illustrations. It is truly an elegant book with gold-edged pages that looks lovely as the centerpiece of the altar. Also, the print and the Revised Standard version make it a pleasure to read. I hope that one day my daughter will enjoy reading it and looking at the pictures. It also has informative, illustrated guides to the Rosary (including the Luminous Mysteries) and the Stations of the Cross. In sum, it is everything I wanted in a Catholic family Bible and look forward to having it in a place of honor in our home for years to come.

In 1611, the Church of England published the "King James" Bible. The "King James" was a beautiful work of art and remained unchallenged until the mid 1800s. At that point, the Anglican Church felt there were enough defects in the "King James" to call for a revision. Very quickly, the Anglicans published the "English Revised" in the late 1800s. By 1901, the Americans published an alternate version. (The "American Standard") It was similar, but there were notable differences. Not too surprisingly, the differences in the "American Standard" were rebuked, and with the exception of some modern (at the time) findings, the powers that were reverted back to the English roots of the "English Revised." This is when the "Revised Standard" came to be. The errors of the "King James" are corrected, and the language is updated. Though, there are some notable traces left of the poetic beauty of the "King James." In his "Responses to 101 Questions on the Bible," Father Raymond E. Brown says that the "Revised Standard" is the version he uses the most. He describes it as: "...for the most part readable and carefully literal." While I consider the "Good News" the best version to begin on, the "Revised Standard" is the one I myself use the most. I'll conclude by saying that the "Revised Standard" is arguably the best version, and probably the version a priest or nun would suggest.

Here is Isaiah 7:14 in the Protestant King James Version ... "Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold a VIRGIN shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanual." (my capitals)

And here is Isaiah 7:14 in the RCV Catholic Edition ... "Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, a YOUNG WOMAN shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel."

What, one may ask, does "Catholic Edition" mean if articles of faith like this are not defended?

It coverage of topics and pedagogical flow are quite approachable and manageable. Struggling friends begain to purchase it for themselves. An excellent book. An interesting book as well. Case examples and references keep things interesting. Not just dry rules.

Clair shifts us effortlessly from 21st century to Civil War vintage events, from psychic phenomenon and out of body experiences to the cozy warmth of a family with cherished values, who support and care deeply for one another. Yet the pieces flow together as smoothly as a gentle stream on a breezeless day. Beautifully written, seamlessly crafted, The House on Slocum Road keeps the reader involved from beginning right through until that final page is turned.

Echoes of the past

Review Date: 2007-07-31
It all started with a warning from a carnival gypsy many years ago: a little girl named Lottie Winslow has a gift; she can look into the future. As years passed, this prediction was pooh-poohed by most of the girl's family. But the prediction was true nonetheless. And many facets of this gift were revealed through mysterious happenings that occurred in and around an old family home in Sacandaga, New York.

A letter edged in black, with blood dripping from a corner. Screeching tires as a car careened out of control. Dreams and nightmares that never seemed to go away.

This is not, however, a horror story. Nor is it a story about fantasies and mental aberrtions. Far from it. This is a story of multi-generational family love and warmth as seen through Lottie's eyes, emotions and experiences. Her story includes gentle reminiscences, a persistent resilience, and the kind of resolutness that all can admire. Her life is also spiced with strange occurrences, vague impressions, and haunting visions.

Throughout this book, D. H. Clair provides sketches of the past and the present that are both authentic and colorful. Historical accounts of the Civil War era are blended with the blunt realism of everyday life today. Sensitive descriptions of the natural world are juxtaposed with the harshness of accidents and medical emergencies. The mysteries, however, are still there--in the center of it all. So, too, are the mystical, psychical parts of life that many readers have experienced in their own lives at one time or another.

All of these threads are woven together with skill and tenderness by the author. This is the kind of book that can warm you on a snowy afternoon or cool you on a sweltering August hammock day.

A Satisfying Read

D.H. Clair's "The House on Slocum Road" has so many twists and turns you won't want to put it down for a moment in fear of losing track of the story. The author has successfully created a labyrinth of characters and a storyline that are strung together and wrapped around the novel's heroine - Lottie Winslow. You will fall in love with Lottie at the get-go, and at first you'll be impatient when the story veers away from her temporarily, but never fear, when it comes back, you're in for a ride. Ms. Clair's clever weave begins to strengthen about a fourth of the way into the book and doesn't let go of the reader till the end.

The story is jam-packed with scenes of the personal effects of the civil war between the North and South: of Lottie's family then, and of Lottie's family in the present. At first it feels as if two stories are running parallel, but in a different manner than what you would expect.

Ms. Clair has written a drama, a tragedy, a romance, a para-normal - all rolled into one, and her comedic sense shines through in Lottie's dialogue in Part Two. You will be intrigued, surprised, and will experience a satisfying read in "The House on Slocum Road." I certainly did.

I recommend it highly.

When people read a great book they want to escape from reality and go somewhere else. Author Dahris Clair invites a reader into a cozy home setting which keeps one glued in literary creativity of a story that whisks one away from stress of daily woes to enjoy a beautifully written tale. With eloquent descriptions of history and nature, The House on Slocum Road-Echoes of the Past, is an incredible journey taken with her heroine, Lottie Slocum, who comes to terms with her own life and the gifts that she has to offer. I loved Lottie and the way that this story reflects on the remarkable talent of this notable author. Dahris Clair writes with a loving spirit that captures the heart of the reader as to where one never wants the story to end. Thank goodness for authors as D.H. Clair. What a blessing it is to have her as an author in our world.

"The House on Slocum Road" is a must read for lovers of the esoteric. The title and cover perfetly encapsulate the mysterious aura of the supernatural and time travel.
The protagonist, i search of familial connection, is propelled backkward in time to the Civil War period. The discovery of an ancestor's chronicles including the Battles of Bull Run and Antietam, add extra deph to the story.
Obsessed with digging through her past, she is rewarded with an encounter of the ghostly kind. The image entices her to "Come home." When a violent storm assaults the old house, the protagonist seeks rfuge in her great grandmother's bed. When she awakens, it is to a different world and new people.
The author has done a creditable job of historical research of the Civil War period. Set in the Adirondacks, the story exudes warmth and gentility.
Ms. Clair cooks up a tasty mystery and ends on a positive note with the inclusion of an old amily recipe for Cinnamon Walnut Scones. Yummy!

Pattern, Price & Time: Using Gann Theory in Trading Systems (Wiley Trading)

This was the first Gann book that I read. I found it to be very inspirational. Reading it encourage me to seek more knowledge about the markets.

The first 2 chapters are the best. The rest of the book is material copied from the Chicago Board of Trade Yearbooks except for the swing data. Most of the trades suggested in the book are hypothetical. He even says so in the book. Nonetheless I recommend it just for the trading rules scattered all over the book.

Gann, the Trader at his best.
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-27
Traders tend to confuse 'Gann, the Trader', with 'Gann, the Forecaster'. Gann, the Trader, was straight forward and logical. Problem starts when traders attempt to trade the forecast with Gann's numerous predictive methods and, vice versa, forecast the trade with Gann's trading method. Gann really does not deserve all the unfounded criticisms. Although there are doubts as to the claims that Gann was the originator of swing chart trading method, Gann, at least, refined and definitized the swing chart trading concept. No one can question the sound trading principles behind the method since there is a clear and convincing proof by none other than Jesse Livermore who achieved the spectacular trading accomplishments by using a variation of swing chart trading method. What Gann tried to do was to add his own brand of forecasting methods to complement his trading operation. There is certainly nothing wrong with the exercise as long as one does not confuse either objective with the other. To be a good trader, one does not need to be a forecaster. In fact, it is not recommended if the trader is a terrible forecaster for his prediction may be detrimental to his trading. However, to truly become an excellent trader, it does not hurt to be a good forecaster as well. The decision on whether or not the chosen forecasting algorithm should be based on Gann is another matter.

WD Gann Adds Volumes to the Commodity Trading World

Review Date: 2007-05-18
WD Gann wrote this updated version of the book in 1951. Yes, 1951. His methodologies and style, as well as his world view, are so....well 1950's. However, what he provides to those of us who want to be successful in trading commodites is a broad set of 'do's and dont's' that you can find in nearly every trading book written today. You know, "stop loss orders", "dont over trade", "never risk more than X%" of your capital on a given trade, "let your winning trade's ride", "get out of a bad trade immediately", "when in doubt, there is no doubt".... We have read them all before. NONE of this is of any real value to the modern trader. However, what is of value, is getting a recognition of the painstaking historical analysis that WD Gann went through BEFORE he traded any commodities. This book includes several 100 year analyses of all the traded commodities of his time. The analyses include what happened in the "month of September in 1897" in cotton. And then that is followed by the next relevant technical occurance, which happened in October of 1897. He does this for many of the commodites of the time from 1841 to 1941. What the reader comes away with in my opinion, is that commodities are cyclical in nature. And that if you can holistically 'feel' the history and the motion of the cycles that exist in each commodity, you can trade more effectively. This includes understanding the 'how we got here' and the relevant bigger picture points that one can glean from looking at the historical data on a specific commodity. For example, that in the last 100 years (1841-1941), (I am making this up) Corn has reached a new yearly high in the month of June 22 times, and a new low in August 36 times. Whereas, new highs were reached in February only 2 times, and new lows reached in December 2 times. This information is valuable to a trader who knows what to do with this type of information. In my view, dont look to this book for more information on "how to trade" as much as you should look at 'what to do' to improve your chances of success. One last note, if you are looking to get some background or academic knowledge on how GANN lines are used, or GANN Boxes or any of the other GANN ascribed technical tools used or invented by GANN, this book DOES NOT show, teach or discuss any of them.

I like this book. It does not promise "90% accurate signals" or treat reader with condescension. It teaches three things: 1) "swing trading" methods, 2) how to pay attention, 3) never forget stop loss orders.

The book itself is structured in three large parts: 1) W.D. Gann's approach to markets and trader's discipline, 2) examples of trading patterns from various commodities all the way from 19th century, 3) addendum from 1951 with some more details and clarifications.

Some people complain that Gann's writing style is too monotonous and droning. It is true in the sense that he does not entertain. But he does cover more ground than all those easy-reading "Trading for Dummies" book which are typeset in triple space with large charts.

Parts of this book and interpretations of Gann's methods are available on the web - but it is still nice to have it as a book.

Great book for those web developers out there looking for a, just as the title says, "Reference Guide". I wouldn't particularly recommend this product if you are looking to create your own website, but it is perfect for when you are looking for a certain way do to something, and just can't quite put your finger on how to do it. Overall, expect a reference guide, not a tutorial on web design.

If you've never programmed before and want to get a solid web technologies background I think this is the best choice for you (and me) I Found this book very easy to follow and the best of it is the fact that everything you see in the book could be applied using open source technologies, the author give you some clues on what tools to use for authoring your projects (like aptana); while digging into this book I found quanta+ the best tool for developing xhtml, css and javascript (but is not mentioned by the author, not that I remember), although you can use whatever you want I do recommend this tool for this tasks as it is very easy including even wysiwyg (what you see is what you get), although if you really want to learn xhtml I don't recommend this option. Once you master this book and get a solid understanding and background on it you'll be prepared for a more advanced book and indeed you should pickup one that talk just about one or two of the technologies. I'm very happy with this book.

Fr. Elbee invites us to look at our Lord as St. Therese looked at him - through the eyes of child who is loved immensely. Fr. gives practical advice on how to love our Lord boldly and how to have a humble and unshakeable confidence in Him who loved us first. Fr.makes the distinction between fleeting feelings and true love which he explains is a disposition of the soul, the mind and the heart. Fr. is a passionate Frenchman; Therese was a passionate Frenchwoman and so a holy passion for the Lord marks every page of this book. It's easy to read and solidly based on scripture which Fr.quotes frequently. This is a book to awaken or rekindle confidence in Jesus.

"And I may add that for the anxious or depressed- this book is a sure remedy."

That is absolutely correct, for the following reason: Anxiety and depression are actually maladies of the heart with SPIRITUAL origins, not "diseases" of the emotions, or "chemical imbalances," as secular psychology and psychiatry would falsely have one believe. These impoverished worldly outlooks cannot diagnose the origins of these maladies accurately, nor can they offer a cure. Quite the contrary, they pose serious obstacles to realizing the only true cure, which consists in the complete abandonment of oneself to the love of Christ, as revealed on the Cross.

Since the cause of these maladies is ultimately spiritual in nature, so too must be the cure, and I BELIEVE IN LOVE is a very good articulation of what this cure involves. The cure essentially consists in the unreserved abandonment of oneself, and of all one's earthly hopes, to God. It is important here to be clear as to what this means: It is NOT the case that one is called to suppress these eartly hopes unnaturally, or to live under the false pretense that these eartly hopes do not really exist. Rather, the book insists that one make them all conditional - EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM, including both the deepest longings of the heart for earthly goods, as well as the most basic physical needs of earthly life. One must be fully willing to make the realization of ALL of them entirey subject to the Loving Providence of God.

This attitude goes hand in hand with a view of suffering and death that is bereft of fear, and that regards both merely as the passageway to eternal happiness in the presence of God. This notion, while profoundly true, is something very radical and alien in today's cultural milieu, which is fundamentally oriented towards avoiding the subject of death entirely, and towards encouraging people to distract themselves from their suffering through the indulgence in and consumption of needless and empty material frivolities.

In view of these considerations, those who aspire to embrace the outlook articulated in this book must be aware that it takes a great deal of courage to do so. There are many elements of what the book counsels that would be met with antagonism and hostility by the false paradigms of secular psychology and psychiatry, and would be seen by them as "masochistic," "psycho-pathological," and the like. Since this type of erroneous thinking pervades our culture to the point of being almost as ubiquitous as the air we breathe, even in many ostensibly Christian settings, these types of false accusations against the true Christian Way that is articulated in this book must be aggressively resisted. As I say, carrying this out takes a considerable amount of courage, especially when one is in a weakened condition due to the very types of anxiety and depression that secular psychology and psychiatry falsely claim to diagnose accurately.

This book should be part of every households library. That includes you bachelors Everything I try from this book has worked perfectly and is very easy to follow. I originally bought a copy for my newly married daughter but after really studying it before I wrapped it I went out and bought one for our house as well.

Indispensable!

For the Harried Mom who is far from hapless

Do you know how it feels to go to a spinning class and the instructor is a size 0, never has given birth, and calls out instructions in a boot-camp style, saying, "anyone can do this, be like me". Barnier doesn't do that. Instead she acknowledges that we will lose things, we need to limit our interruptions, and we need wider margins in our lives with less activities so we can do the things we love the best well.

The thing is, you do get help, but the person leading you to a more organized life has "given birth, did have a few extra pounds to lose, and loves Turtle cheesecake better than tofu".

Thank goodness!

There's a home schooling section that doesn't apply to me, but may apply to you, but this is really a great tool. And I love that she added some easy recipes and fun activities for the mom with younger children. It's a fun book. Carol promises this:

To help women work with their personality traits rather than against them to make it possible to: keep track of items; actually arrive on time or even early; access information that you need when you need it; limit pesky interruptions; get stuff to organize itself; and run a home and have fun doing it.

Let's get organized!

The author and I are nothing alike (I'm the type-A mom she doesn't like), but I like her approach of trying to get a life organized that seems a little too full of "life". She has helpful hints that even the most disorganized mom can attempt. Don't try it all, find what you like and start small. I don't homeschool but I still read all of the book to see if there were adaptable organizing tools. I have a 6,5,&2 year old. I LOVED declaring a boredom day, striving for early and trying to give my family margins. Some of her techniques were not easily usable for kids under 7 or 8.

This book is great! I laughed so hard while getting very practical ideas. The best thing about this book for me was that it made me realize that I am not the only distractable mom. Now I can embrace my own gifts and stop trying to be someone I am not.

Great book! This book is not for those who have Martha Stewart homes. It's for the rest of us who approach our lives realistically, with kids, homeschooling and life getting in the way of those serene homes we hear other people talk about. It's not a comprehensive how-to-organize-the-entire-home book, but rather chapters with practical tips about mothers like us can bring a little order into our lives. Her writing is hilarious. I laughed out loud many times. The chapters are short, making them easily digestible between kid-related crises in the home.

I have discovered your great conspiracy! I now know your secret method for boosting book sales. After hearing you speak at a convention, I ran home and requested your book for the distractable mom from the library. I was surprised to find that I had to wait behind 3 others, but I was hopeful that I would get a call any day from the library to come pick up my requested book. After a month, I checked my account, shocked to find that I was STILL behind 3 people. At my next visit, I asked the librarian what the status of the book was. She said at that point, it was 6 weeks late and they were losing hope of having it returned. About a month later, I had moved up one notch. The librarian said they had bought a new copy. 3 months later, the (second) book finally made it back. At last, I was only 1 slot away from checking out your book! I'm sad to report that it's been 4 months now. I've finally given in and just bought a darn copy. I doubt the library will be able to keep this book in stock! I've come to realize that I probably saved myself $20 in late fees by purchasing it. It's a genius ploy- a book for the mom too distracted to bring it back to the library!

Thanks!

Shannon

This is an extraordinary, near-perfect book. You have to read it for yourself. I am an English professor at the University of California Santa Cruz, and I can say I haven't read poems like this in a very long time. H.D. Elijah is so young and talented. I am thoroughly impressed.
