In all seriousness..
It's great to see so many people finding the humor with this book and its accompanying website. But I just wanted to add that this book (all humor aside) has given me some REALLY valuable information! It really explains things in an understandable way. VERY refreshing!

A Must Read !
As Abbie Hoffmann would say, "Steal This Book!".If I'd been able to have access to this brilliant guide during my grad school daze, I might have finished my degrees without resorting to bribery and self-abnegation. At least my daughter will now have the benefit of Messrs. Frank & Stein's wisdom as she begins her graduate school career. Definitely recommended for the academically gifted but socially maladjusted student.

GREAT BOOK - GREAT WEBSITE!
This book is informative AND funny as hell at the same time.
I checked out the website listed on the back cover (www.playing-the-game.com) and that had me rolling on the floor as well! (especially the REVIEWS and AUTHORS pages!) These guys are insane! (insanely funny, that is!)

That being said - what a GREAT way to get some excellent advice for successfully getting through the often difficult/frustrating grad school experience. -- an excellent resource for masters or doctoral students (even M.B.A.'s and online programs).

I definitely recommend PTG - AND it's website!

Great learning tool and reference
On the advice of my PA, I read the book before going on the pump in October 2001 (22 years after my diagnosis with Type I diabetes). The book is written extremely well and provides clear and concise coverage of the almost every aspect of pump therapy. The authors highlight considerations to make before going on the pump, as well as circumstances you will encounter after beginning pump therapy. The book offers explanations and calculations to figure total daily dosages and advice on how to change dosages for exercise, patterns of high and low bg's, etc. The material included in the book is really valuable when you begin working with your doctor, PA, etc, to help you know what questions to ask. I felt like I had more confidence and knowledge in the transition to pump therapy. "Pumping Insulin" helped me to better manage the pump and my diabetes as soon as I walked into the doctor's office for my initial pump appointment. And for those that have already started pumping, the book's a great reference tool to have on hand.

Must-have reference for pumping.
We got this book in late March, 2001, shortly after our then-6 year old son who has Type 1 diabetes started pumping insulin. This reference explains so well how short-acting insulin is used in the body, how to calculate for it during exercise, how to make adjustments to the basal rates....it save our pump trainer many late night calls. It was a lifesaver in helping us get through the insulin pump learning curve faster. Only thing it doesn't handle in-depth enough is "surprise" infusion set changeouts & sensitivity to Humalog. This book helped us understand how to take better care of our son.

a book to change your future
This book is the best I have read on pumping, having taken us(my son aged 10 and I) from very little knowledge on the subject, to convincing us it was for him, and to using it as an essential handbook and support tool now he is on the pump. Umlike some other books, it is so easy to read and understand, without having to read and re read it to get the meaning. The tables in it are so useful and much of the information is not easy to find altogether in one place in any other books. As in car repair books, this one is a 'dirty finger' book - you use it as you go along, and can never know more than the book or outgrow it. I have bought several copies for other people now, and everyone has been pleased with it.A must if you have a pump or are thinking about getting one.

No Better Guide to Strange Films
This book is an excellent guide to the odd side to film. It really made me enthusiastic about low-budget, high-creativity films. Besides excellent interviews with strange film-makers, it has a great guide to the many genres of strange films and an even more amazing guide to strange film personalities. I recommend this book for anyone, whether a film enthusiast or not, as an excellent way to find good entertainment and great reading.

Essential Reading For True Film Fanatics
If you are a fan or collector of 'B' Films and rare eccentric movies, then this book is made for you. You will find commentaries and editorials of everything from low budget horror films like "Corpse Grinders" to many of those tantalizing Russ Meyer beauties. This book dredges through the archives of film to document some of the most under-appreciated directors of all time and hails those films made outside the chains of mainstream production. Re/Search #10: Incredibly Strange Films not only appeals to a large audience of cult film fanatics, but also is an incredible book to add to any collection.

required film school reading
As with all the Research Series books, Incredibly Strange Films lavishes the reader with little known information on a marginal subject with great detail. I originally received this book in 1986 and was immediately impressed with the exhaustive research of all our forgotten films as well as the profiles on directors such as H.G. Lewis. It also includes a helpful index (as far as I can remember) that will send you running for the video store. I haven't written a book on films but I know that you need not be a film buff or major to enjoy this book. The photos are reason enough to buy this book.If you don't believe me, just view the cover!

DGA Magazine: May 2000
"Saying that Jerry Ziesmer probably has delivered the greatest assistant director book ever written doesn't do it justice. His tales from the Kleig was in "Ready When You Are, Mr. Coppola, Mr. Spielberg, Mr. Crowe" are not only an insider-insider's look into what actually happens in the making of movies--from "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" to "Apocalypse Now" to "Jerry Maguire"--but also a compendium of perceptive glimpses at the personalities and decision making by great filmmakers and actors across four decades. This book relates the biz and its lore with color, intimacy, candor and horse sense..."

The Inside Scoop From A Fascinating, Insightful Pro
Disclaimer--I know Jerry from working with him on the Director's Guild Council, and I have utmost respect for him as a professional filmmaker. But I never knew his talents extended to such cogent, fun-to-read, full-of-insight writing until reading this wonderful book. It combines the best of both worlds--the "inside baseball" stuff that pro's with years of experience will still find new and fresh and helpful to their work AND the "Hollywood" anecdotage that any fan of great movies and moviemakers will read with a chuckle and a tear and a lot of smiles. If you really want to go "Behind the scenes"--save the trip to Universal's tour and get this book instead. You'll learn a lot, and have a great, great time!

Tenth in the Saint Germain series.
Or seventh, if you discount the three books that focused on Olivia. Or first (and as of this writing, only) in the Madeline series. Depends on how you look at it.

About a fifth of this book, I would estimate, is about Saint Germain himself, in the days of ancient Egypt, and some of his most formative moments. The rest of it centers on Madeline de Montalia, his former lover and vampiric "daughter", in the early ninteenth century, on an archeological dig in Egypt. The plot and characterization are excellent as usual for Ms. Yarbro; the pattern begun in the previous book (A Candle For d' Artgnan) of the editing being somewhat sloppier than in previous books is continued here; these were the first two books of the series to come out in "quality" or trade paperback editions, rather than mass-market, and frankly the editing in the previous books was better. Apparently, someone considers "quality" to be defined by the size of the book and the type of binding, rather than by efficient editing. There are about a dozen places in the book where there is a wrong word used, or a word missing, or an extra word inserted, or similar sloppinesses. Still, the book is well worth the read, and comes highly recommended.

Historically Fascinating, Yarbro Shines With This Book!
Ever since the publication of the first Saint-Germain book, I have been hooked on Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's books. I have often wondered how she remained a relatively obscure author, given the popularity that Anne Rice has enjoyed with her vampire series. While Rice is a great author, she lacks the historical research that goes into Yarbro's books... perhaps that's a liability for some romance readers who want instant gratification, without savoring a well crafted book, for this is what Out Of The House Of Life truly is! As another reviewer remarked, I, too, have learned more of history through this remarkable lady than anywhere else, College education included! This book goes back 6,000 years, and traces the roots of St. Germaine's history- the ignoble savage, slowly, over centuries, becoming the strong, sexy, and secure vampire with a heart of gold. I especially liked learning so much about Egyptian history in this novel, and found it refreshing. Unlike her earliest novels, I recently found that Yarbro's later books have become all too predictable-- poor misunderstood vampire stands up for the underdog, and becomes persecuted once again. Same scenes, same predicable outcomes. This novel shines out from the most recent, in that, it has more to say than that. The action doesn't get bogged down for lack of a plot this time. Too bad Yarbro didn't learn from this one, and stay on this track.. I can't say the same for books about St. Germaine published right after this one, and certainly not for the ones just before it, either.

Madelaine de Montalia
Chelsea Quinn Yarbro has created three of my all-time favorite vampires: Count Saint-Germain, Atta Olivia Clemens, and Madelaine de Montalia. Can't wait until she writes another book!

Out of the House of Life is the first book in Yarbro's Madelaine series. The book is unique in that it has two storylines. In the first storyline it is the 1820s, and Madelaine de Montalia is in Egypt on an archaelogical dig. This is highly unusual for a seemingly young person, not to mention a woman. What the other expedition workers do not know is that Madelaine is not as young as she looks: she is a vampire who rose from her grave in 1744 after meeting and falling in love with the mysterious Count Saint-Germain.

While Madelaine is immersed with the history of Egypt, she is receiving letters from Count Saint-Germain. In this separate storyline, Saint-Germain is recounting his life in the temples of ancient Egypt, from when he was first brought to the House of Life as demon, till he transformed himself until the noble "man" known to many fans of Yarbro's Saint-Germain series.

Fans of Yarbro's Saint-Germain and Olivia books, and good historical fiction in general will love Out of the House of Life.

As of May 2000, Yarbro has written 12 Saint-Germain novels and 3 Olivia novels.

Unplug to Avoid Overload
It would seem a simple solution. But, in today's world things have become so difficult and solutions so time consuming. That's why Swenson breaks the prescription down into small easy-to-swallow pills. Through humor and a great deal of common sense, Swenson shows how you can carve out a margin in four key areas of your life: emotional, physical, time and financial. By becoming Goal-Focused and God-Focused, you can unplug and eliminate a large portion of the stress in your life, thereby avoiding Overload Syndrome.

Excellent Read! Better Than "Margin".
In my humble opinion, "Overload Syndrome" is better than Swenson's first book, "Margin", mainly because the author gets to the prescription sooner and spends less time defining the problem.

For example, in "Margin", you are over 1/3 into the book before Swenson gives a clear and comprehensive definition of the term "margin". In "Overload Syndrome", Swenson spends the first 50 pages describing overload syndrome and the last 150 giving prescriptions for the problems. Therefore, more text in "Overload Syndrome" is spent giving solutions. Granted, in our time and age we want a quick fix to our problems without delving deeply into the problem. However, Swenson's prescriptions are not the quick fixes we may have grown accustomed to and are profound in their simplicity.

For example, some of Swenson's excellent prescriptions include how to:

1. Make solitude a priority for resting and thinking.
2. Deal correctly with possesions so they do not
possess you.
3. Combat media overload.
4. Deal with information overload.
5. Make wise choices.
6. Lower expectations.
7. Slow down and enjoy life.

Practically everyone who reads the book struggles with one or more of the above areas and will greatly benefit from reading "Overload Syndrome"!

Caught in the whirlwind of life and can't seem to slow down?
This book can truly change your life if you let its still. small voice bring your life back to what God intended it to be. As this book explains, there are seasons of busyness, and there are seasons of rest. Modern life has sped up to the point that we seem to believe we must be running 25 hours a day, that everything rests on our shoulders. But that isn't true! God doesn't give us more than we can handle- we take the burden on ourselves. This book is not a quick fix guide by any means. It simply explains what the modern overload syndrome is and how to escape, by asking questions and offering broad guidelines that encourage you to look at your life and decide how it needs to change in order to bring back a level of sanity and the margin that we all so desperately need against the world's ever increasing demands.

the pain cure
I have been a chronic pain patient for 10 years. I cried when I read the opening chapter of this book because someone FINALLY understood how I felt and what I was going through. This book has made a differnece in my life. I now understand the pain process and how my body handles it. I have learned strategies for coping and living a fuller life. This is the third copy of the book I have bought for a friend who needed it as well. Everyone who either suffers from chronic pain or has someone close to them who does, needs to read this book.

Life changing book!
I haven't been properly diagnosed yet, but I have been in severe pain for over 6 months. Only the strongest steroids or heavy narcotics have helped my pain, but the side effects of these medicines made them not an option for me. So, I have been suffering, until I got this book. By following the advice, I am beginning to regain my life, eliminate pain, and am more knowledgable about my body. If you are in pain, get this book!

Great help for my arthritis pain
This book is very well written and informative. By using several of the author's suggestions, I was able to alleviate the chronic neck pain I previously had. I would recommend it to anyone with chronic pain.

Classic
Gordon D. Fee has done everyone a favour. This is a scaled-down version of 'God's Empowering Presence', without all the pages of Greek exegesis. Suitable reading for the lay-theologian, a good devotional read.
Particularly interesting are his comments on the flesh-Spirit theme, and he certainly deserves to be heard in this regard. He competently expounds Paul's theology of what it means to be 'in the Spirit' and 'walking in the Spirit' (though the reader will have to go to GEP for the full exegetical background)and exposes the shallowness of the prevailing evangelical view that flesh and Spirit is about the unceasing internal battle between two natures, a doctrine which can be used to cover up sin and obscure the reality of the freedom believers have in Christ.
Fee's findings make great pastoral theology, and I have found his insights invaluable, both in my own life and in teaching others. My only concern is that his emphasis on the Spirit may tend to promote a corresponding de-emphasis on Christ, who is the central figure in Paul's teaching.

A MUST read.
This book is required reading

Refreshing Theology
This is an excellent book and written by a scholar. This book deals primarily with the presence of the Holy Spirit in the individual life of the believer and in the church. Fee examines the presence of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament and shows how God dwelt amongst His people and how the presence departed and was renewed again.

He describes the eschatological nature of salvation, showing that salvation has a past tense aspect, a present tense aspect and a future tense aspect. Anothre theme shown in this book is that God is still saving a people for His name describing how salvation is corporate as well as individual and cites various scriptures to back this up.

Fee's teaching influences the way one reads the New Testament. Upon reading this book one can't help but see when ope reads the New Testament, the perspective the Early Church had on Salvation and their existence.

At the back of the book there is an appendix dealing with Spirit and Water Baptism.

For a clear balanced and uncompromising book dealing with the Holy Spirit and the Early Church this book is a must read.

But is it art?
This is a nice compilation of erotic photography from a number of photographers, but is it "fine art" as most folks define the term? I don't think so -- maybe "fine erotic art" would be a more accurate description. Many people will find many of the images pornographic rather than erotic, and a few of them disturbing. Which "few" depends on one's particular sexual preference, habits, experience, etc. -- mine will likely be different from yours. Whatever, this is a volume for lovers of graphic eroticism, not for those looking for "fine art" in the traditional sense -- fans of Roy Stuart or Eric Kroll should enjoy this book, although its images aren't as fetishistic as those photographers'. It's worth the price, if only to add to one's collection, but keep it away from children and folks wearing pacemakers.

One gripe: The reproduction of the images wasn't as good as it should be, with somewhat wishy-washy blacks and whites -- the overall impression of many of the pictures is gray, without the contrast and rich blacks of a true photograph. At the price of the book, I guess this is expected, since great printing costs money, but I was disappointed nevertheless.

Also, many of the images depict what middle-of-the-roaders would consider aberrant sexual activity, so if anything other than straight hetero encounters puts you off, shop for another book. On the other hand, it's obvious from the expressions of the participants that it's all in good fun.

I wouldn't buy this book again, but I didn't return it, either, for what that's worth.

Steamy & Sexy
David Steinberg's book Photo Sex: Fine Art Sexual Photography Comes of Age
By Sensuous Sadie
SensuousSadie@aol.com
www.sensuoussadie.com

In the introduction A.D. Coleman says, "the book in your hands is not just another volume of loosely defined 'erotic' photography in which formal nude studies and elaborately staged but fictional sexual scenarios predominate. These are photographs of everyday people-not hired models or professional sex workers-engaged in real sex." "Thank heavens," I thought. I've pretty much had it with staged erotica - the kind where a model stands against a black backdrop in a latex maid outfit and a whip in her hand, the kind rife at what he calls the "tens of thousands of unfathomably popular, hopelessly boilerplate, sex websites," but hardly what I see in real life.

Give me instead what David collected in Photo Sex, "Older people, hefty people, skinny people, people with disabilities-these and more mingle here, linked principally by their acknowledgment of their sexuality as central to their lives and by their participation in these acts of photo sex." Yes, people who look like me, and like my kinky friends. Yes, people like me, who celebrate sex as the core of our being. And Yes, real sex and love and affection, the kind I feel when my lover Griffin looks into me, his hands on me and in me.

The photos are beautiful. Sexual. Alive with hunger. But then, it turns out that this book is about a little more than just that. Coleman goes on to discuss this type of photography as inherently political, saying that, "By its very existence, the range of sexual images being produced opposes the core right-wing dictate that sexual activity should properly be restricted to heterosexual interaction between husbands and wives, without accouterments and with procreation foremost in mind-and that sexual activity should never involve shameless public display."

We in the BDSM community are often reminded not to "scare the villagers," meaning don't let them see too much of our practices because they cannot understand what they are seeing and will use it against us. Maybe that's true, but in another way it so damages us both in the public arena as well as in the private one. There is another part of me, a hunger for my vanilla friends to see me, the whole me, not just the fluff I assemble for public consumption. My vanilla friends have responded in a variety of ways, from mild titillation to a blank look. Even my kinky friend Susan exhorts me to keep this side of myself under the blanket so as not to make anyone uncomfortable by "unconsensually" including them in my lifestyle, or because I might appear to have gone "around the bend with that bondage stuff." She is right in one way though, I also don't want to become one of those BDSM-obsessed people who bore us silly, yammering on and on about their sex life.

I cannot keep it all under the blanket though. The only way to remove the stigma of an alternative sexuality is to educate our vanilla brethren. Speaking openly about what we do and who we are is part of that. It's not that I want to share what I did in bed last night, but rather I want to be free to talk about the remarkable world of sexuality and how that affects my personal and public life. I am hungry for compatriots, hungry to connect on a deeper level about what is meaningful. Sadly, in our culture talking about sexuality is often not acceptable, not to mention alternative sexuality like BDSM. Even when I do find vanilla friends open to discussion, they must start at the beginning as in, "What does that B-D-S-M stand for again?" With that in mind, a deeper discussion of sexual politics is never going to be on the table.

One day my life will have its own generational shift, a shift that like David's book, offers "glimpses of the playful, the tender, the intimate, the affectionate, the delicate, the humorful, even the goofy-sex in all its delicious, constantly shifting intricacy." One day I will be known for all of it, and then I too will be a coffee table book of delicious desserts, easy to taste along with all the other flavors of my inner landscape.

Sexual Photography as Fine Art
David Steinberg has put together a collection of erotic photographs that, while exposing us to the many facets of the sexual world, moves sexual photography itself into the realm of fine art. Sometimes startling, sometimes breathtaking, sometimes bizarre, yet always absorbing, these photos will engage you through form, texture and substance. I believe that this book may well become the standard by which future fine art books of sexual photography will be measured.

Wonderful Book for Guidance Counselors
This is my first year as a Guidance Counselor, and this book has been a tremendous help. Using this book, I have been able to help teachers by giving them suggestions in working with students who were experiencing behavior and academic problems. I have also seen the suggestions in this book help students!

A Blessing for substitute teachers
I have found it very helpful as a substitute teacher. It has a common sense approach to dealing with behavior idiosynchrosies common in children from varied backgrounds, and has enough suggestions to fit several cultures and teacher confort levels. As a substitute I find a different bunch daily. This is the perfect reference to eliminate almost every situation I've seen.
I've even used it at home to help my son to better control his temper. I've shared it with several teachers so they are able to help my son at school and church as well. The principal at his school has a copy now as a reference for the teachers. He feels it will drastically cut the number of special ed referals next school year.
I feel this is useful for anyone who works with children. It is worth so much more than the [$$'s]. My master's advisor was correct in stating that this is the equivalent to the Bible's prophets for a good teacher.

Practical help in the classroom
This book is an excellent resource for teachers, counselors, and the entire school community. PRIM helps teachers identify both behavioral and academic difficulties by breaking each subject and behavior into categories. In addition, there are a wide variety of interventions that are practical for the classroom. This book is also a great to help with documentation of behaviors.
