one of the best low carb books available
This book is for both low carb newcomers and veterans alike. It covers the basics for the new folks while keeping us veterans engaged with lots of new little "nuggets," peices to the puzzle of why this way of eating improves health in so many ways. For me, reading books like this keep me motivated and on track. I probably have 30 low carb books, and this is one of my very favorites.

I'm 44 and I've been low carbing for 21 months.I have lost 80 lbs. through diet and exercise, and have reversed all of the following conditions: acne, leathery skin, overgrowth of moles, high blood pressure, painful legs and feet, anxiety, brain fog, PCOS, IBS, asthma, allergy to pollens and nuts, and heart palpitations. I feel like twenty years have been erased.

Miryam E. Williamson is a very intelligent and caring author as you will discover if you read her book. She is commited to this way of eating because it saved her as it as saved so many of us. Add this book to your library and enjoy.

Right On the Money If Your Problem Is Insulin Resistance
Miryam Williamson's "Blood Sugar Blues" is an excellent book for people who find themselves suffering from a multitude of health problems that are often difficult for mainstream doctors to diagnose.

Although insulin resistance is often the culprit, it is frequently overlooked by traditionally trained internists who, when all common blood and other testing comes back normal, don't understand the condition enough to explore it as the possible answer to their patients' complaints.

Williamson does an excellent job spelling out symptoms caused by insulin resistance-- which makes it easy for the reader to discern if this, in fact, is his or her problem. Her writing shows she has researched this condition thoroughly and understands how it can lead to severe illnesses including heart disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and cancer-- and she writes in such a way that her research is easy for the lay person to understand. While the book does provide a good bit of scientific information about disease processes, she has written a book that is highly accessible to most anyone who reads it.

She also clearly presents strategies for altering one's diet and lifestyle to reduce damage caused by systemic dysfunction that leads to the body losing its ability to produce, process, and use insulin the way it is supposed to. She offers concise advice for helping restore the body to its healthier state and offers a comparison of 5 different popular diets in a way that helps the reader choose which one may be best for him/her.

Williamson obviously believes that, with proper information and guidance, many of us can make changes in our lives that will help us feel better and ward off serious disease, and she does an excellent job passing along that hopefulness to her readers.

Finally, she provides lists of 'safe' foods for people suffering from insulin resistance and a number of simple and tasty recipes that incorporate foods in combinations that help relieve symptoms of the disorder. "Blood Sugar Blues" is a well-written and easily understood primer for anyone dealing with insulin resistance and the ills it can cause.

Read This Book First!
I feel very fortunate that I read Miryam Williamson's Blood Sugar Blues first on my search for insulin resistance. She was able to put together pieces of the health puzzle that even my doctor did not see. She is able to clearly convey a lot of complex metabolic issues so that everything starts to make sense. One of the best chapters is the one on choosing a low carbohydrate eating plan, in which she reviews five different plans, pros and cons. This saved me a lot of time and experimentation and was therefore successful from the start.

Creamy bisques, fresh vegetable purées, hearty meat-and-potato potages--soup delights one and all. Recognizing its primal appeal, The Culinary Institute of America Book of Soups provides over 100 exemplary recipes for the adored dish as well as detailed technical information all cooks can use. The book concentrates on the whys and hows of soup production; over 50 step-by-step photographs display basic methods for preparing a complete range of soups, from broths and cream soups to bisques, chowders, cold soups, and more. The soups themselves are enticing and include supper specialties like Purée of Split Pea, elegant specialties such as Cantaloupe Soup with Lime Granité, refreshing cold soups like gazpacho, and down-home treats including Cream of Tomato Soup and Seafood Gumbo. Soups from the global kitchen are well represented, too, with recipes for the likes of Thai Hot and Sour Soup and Leblechi, a delicious Tunisian chickpea soup. With recipes for dessert soups--one made with strawberries is particularly pleasing--and for accompaniments like Cheddar Rusks and Sage Dumplings, the book is a completely informative exploration of a dish much loved but too often neglected. --Arthur Boehm

If you only buy one cookbook, this should be it!!
I cook extenstively and own a wealth of cookbooks but when I want to make a failsafe recipe, this is THE ONE. Not one dud to date (there is no other cookbook I can say that about). Always worth the effort.

If you only buy one cookbook, make this it, you'll never be sorry.

Wow!
Let's face it: most cookbooks have maybe two or three recipes you incorporate into your repertoire. I must admit the Culinary Institute of America imprimatur put me off (I'm a *cook*, not a chef, and I associate the CIA with the Arugula Heresy and the California Cuisine Abomination). This, along with Beard on Bread, the original troika of Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Marcella Hazan, and various Louisiana and Chinese cookbooks has definitely got a permanent place on my shelves. I've tried 10 recipes so far from the various categories (Broths, Hearty Soups, Cream Soups, Pureed Soups, Bisques & Chowders, Cold Soups) and not only haven't found a dud, but have been brought to food overjoy. I admit that I've chosen with an eye to avoiding stuff I don't like (like split pea, which traumatized me as a child, or puree of carrot & orange, which simply sounds vile to me, rather than intriguing -- the California Cuisine Abomination again).

With a Cuisinart or similar appliance, none of these things are very hard, especially if you keep stocks around. If you don't, buy a package of stock at your grocery store, which I do when I don't have the time to roast and simmer. I've seen more specialized books (there's one very good one devoted to chowders, whose name escapes me right now), but this is the best general-soup book I've used.

My new favorite cookbook
I haven't tried many of these recipes yet, but the ones I have were fantastic. The Potato and Fennel Chowder, in particular, was exceptional. My husband, to whom little is better than "pretty good", asked for a double batch the next time!

The instructions are pretty clear and easy to follow, and it's just generally a nice book to have around.

For families and friends of brain trauma patients
This book is a must have for patients and families of brain trauma. It clearly states symptoms and stages of the trauma. It tells you what to expect. It isn't a medical description but a patient to patient description in terms that anyone can comprehend. It is one excellent book. Thank you Gail Denton for writing this book.

Recovery begins with understanding
This book is a guide to sanity for those who have experienced mild brain injury, as I have. In the fall of 2000, I suffered an accidental fall and spent the following 15 months in a struggle to recover my 'real self". With the aid of this book, I am now fully functional again and able to cope with the minor relapses. I strongly recommend this book to those who suffer, their friends and caregivers.

Brainlash reviewed by a head injury patient.
I have read a number of books on the subject as I am a person who has a brain Injury. This book, more than any other I have read, has been extremely helpful to me. First of all because it explains so well what happens to the sufferer, both physiologically as well as emotionally. The book also gives lots of possitive suggestions for coping as well as for healing.

I fulheartedly recommend this book for both patients as well as their family and friends. It gives much understanding into the issue of brain injury and also much encouragement. It is an uplifting book, at least for me it was!

Thank you Gail Denton.

A "must read" for success in the 21st century!
Though contractors don't always realize it, marketing always has--and will continue to be-- the best way for them to distinguish themselves from their competition. Now, for the first time, everything a building professional needs to know about marketing construction services has been pulled together in one easy-to-follow book. A "must read" for success in the twenty-first century!

The reviewer is the Past-President of the Construction Writers Association, and Publisher of the award-winning construction newsletter "Words from Woody."

Electronic and Digital Age of Marketing Professional Svcs
Authors Kubal, Miller and SMPS' own Ron Worth have put togetherone of the strongest marketing books to come along in a long, longtime. This is a virtual encyclopedia of how-to marketing, weighting in at 420 pages plus a CD-ROM.

Finally we have a marketing book that recognizes we are in the electronic and digital age and that the internet has changes marketing forever. The summary of Chapter Two on "Virtual Construction" starts out, "Undoubtedly the virtual age is encroaching upon the construction industry. Its effects on how construction is completed will become obvious, and changes to how construction is sold and marketed in the twenty-first century will also occur." while that is an understatement, many firms have not yet realized that the twenty-first century is here and these things are happening all around us.

The CD-Rom, with its listing of internet hyperlinks, is worth the price of the book alone. Using this CD, you can access most of the information about our industry that is available today. The book's chapter on market research will show you just how valuable the internet and the CD can be.

While some of the chapters in the book are targeted to the construction field, most of the book is directly applicable to our entire industry. The chapters on "Creating a Marketing Plan" and "Marketing and Sales Technology and Marketing Materials," while illustrated with examples from the construction industry, are as good a general guide on "how to do it right" as you will find anywhere.

Some of the best of the book can be found in "Marketing Communication Plan" and "Getting Publicity for Your Business." Any firm can gain from reading and implementing the material in these chapters. The list of questions on how to quantify your prospects on page 99 needs to be copied and given to every marketer and principal in every firm in the land. It is a list of the basic questions, the ones not asked or, if they are, the answers are ignored.

I have a couple of bones to pick about the book. One is the title. Why not just call it Marketing Techniques for the Construction Industry? I guess they thought that mentioning 'profits' would get more attention. My problem with the title is that some will buy the book looking for the wrong thing and, more importantly, some will not buy the book when they go looking for good marketing advice.

The other problem I have with the book (and I am being really picky here) is that the authors, from time to time, get too caught up in the widgets and wizardry of technology. The danger here is that the widgets and wizardry change every day. When you mention Palm Pilot III, you are already yesterday's news. The concepts are right, but listing today's technology tools is a mistake.

An Effective and Powerful Tool
Today, it's everyone's role to market and sell. The book will help you with everything from implementing a marketing plan and building strategic alliances to selling virtual construction and design-build methodologies. What an effective and powerful tool for the construction industry and about time!

History every American citizen should know
This passionately written book relates the story of an amazing man whose life existed in two cultures: one Americans label as native/indigenous, the other as cultured/civilized. The circumstances of Montezuma's life placed him in a position few had at that time to help bridge the gap. The rich and well researched detail in this book gives the reader insite into a time and subject in American history about which we all ought to be more informed. The love story that unfolds, the great old photographs, maps, and printed documents that enhance the text, and the quotes from Montezuma's own colorful, often poetic writing make him real and this book a must-read.

Carlos Montezuma: a must read
Because history is a record written by the winners, most of us grew up with little true knowledge of the struggles that gripped native peoples in the United States. Through the story of the life and times of Carlos Montezuma, Speroff takes us on a compassionate, yet academic journey through the Native American saga of the late 19th, and early 20th century. Montezuma was kidnapped as a young child from his Yavapai parents by Apache warriors and sold to an Italian photographer traveling through the desert southwest. Educated in the leading Indian schools of the time, he embraced the assimilation of Native Americans into the dominant white culture and became the first Native American physician. Through original documents, we follow a transition in Montezuma's thought that leads him to fight for the establishment of a reservation for the Yavapai people. This book is extraordinarily well researched, and includes many photographs of the actual historic sites taken by the author. Montezuma's story is inspiring and compelling, tragic yet uplifting. All this plus a tender and dramatic love story transmitted through original letters make this book a must read.

Incredible Men
This is an incredible story written about an incredible man by yet another incredible man. I would highly recommend it to anyone interest in history and/or the history of medicine.

Excellent!
Set in late nineteenth century San Francisco, The Case of the Cat with the Missing Ear, from the very first page captured my attention and held it throughout. Mr. Emerson has written an intelligent and thoroughly gripping and rather humorous mystery with a cast of curious canine (and feline) characters. Samuel Blackthorn, a clever, cunning, and courageous Yorkie dogdetective, makes many friends and deals with canines a zillion times larger than himself -- which, after all, is to be expected in a town populated by pooches of every description. The imagery, such as the vivid description of the fog rolling down into the city at twilight, is truly fascinating! Wit and whimsey abound in this Sherlock Holmesian narrative, which I highly recommend to readers both young and old. I can hardly wait for the next adventure in the series! A very good read, indeed!

Fantastic!
The best book I've read in the last few years. There aren't many books between the reading level of Harry Potter and To Kill a Mockingbird. This is it. It's funny but doesn't treat kids like they aren't as smart as adults. This is a book for kids who love to read but have run out of good books. Although it says ages 8-12, I'm 40 and I loved it. Dog lovers of all ages will love it too.

A delightful mystery is intended for young adult readers
This delightful mystery is intended for young adult readers but is reviewed here for its ability to interest all age groups. Take a Yorkshire terrier investigator who is a master of deductive reasoning ala Sherlock Holmes, add some animals who come to him for help, and throw in a complex tale of deceit which involves high-ranking city officials and you have Adventures Of Samuel Blackthorne, a satisfyingly different and witty mystery.

Catholics at a Crossroads: Coverup, Crisis, and Cure

Best Book Ever for Helping the Church Renew Itself
Dr. Eileen Flynn has given us the most readable and by far the most intelligently reasoned book yet to help hierarchy, clergy and laity find their way back. She has not only done her homework and analyzed her findings with skills based on her dozen or more earlier books. She has also organized her approach so clearly that the reader follows her argument with ease and in some ways with pleasure and relief, however appalling the material has to be at certain inescapable points of that argument. She presents a calm, admirably positive prescription for recovery while there is still time. Flynn pulls no punches in setting forth her Rx to repair the catastrophic damage born of millennial practices of governance that little if anything to do with original intent. Her book gives us her special woman's interpretation of what Raymond Schroth, S.J., meant when he wrote, "Nowhere does Scripture have anything good to say about power and hanging onto power."

Activism by Lay People Needed
Flynn's book brings the reader around to a not-so-easy solution to a horrifying problem. Lay Catholics must become involved and fully participate, as did Christians in the days following the time of Christ. Being a sheep is not what it's about. If you're a Catholic or anyone else who is upset and angry about the behavior of some priests, and even enraged about the cover-up by some bishops or archbishops, but don't know what to do about it, read this book. Changes can be made. Catholics at a Crossroads gives background on the facts of this problem, proposes a number of causes and finally offers the solution - activism by lay people.

How the Unthinkable Happened
The stories about sexual abuse by Catholic priests are still making headlines. As a Catholic, I am horrified by these news stories. Every time I read them, I ask myself why, how could this happen? Then a few months ago I received a manuscript in the mail from a Catholic theologian who had tackled this question directly and thoughtfully. I am the editor of Paraview Publishing and Eileen Flynn's manuscript answered the questions I had been asking myself ever since the crisis broke in 2002. Flynn's crystal clear analysis of the situation uncovers the underlying causes of the crisis: the inflexibility of Catholic sexual ethics, the theological issues of responsibility, and the reality of a dysfunctional institution. If you'll look at the "Editorial Reviews" section of this book page, you'll see that knowledgeable people agree that Flynn has hit the nail on the head. Frankly, it would all be quite depressing if not for the fact that Flynn is also able to offer a "cure," a way for the laity and the Church to work together, address the underlying problems, and finally set things straight.

Priceless for those who love Baltimore
This book is a unique combination of biography, city-history, and insight into the feelings and production of a gifted, self-taught artist. Tony DeSales overcame limitations of means and circumstance to bear witness to the city and neighborhood he loved.

The authors of this book, in turn, do justice to the artist's life and deep-felt monochrome and color sketches. Writing, production, and reproduction of the artwork are all first-rate.

This book is a bargain at its price, and is priceless for those who share Tony DeSales' love for Baltimore.

Baltimore's Own Little Italy Artist
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in street art and the Baltimore area. It is packed with Tony's beautiful artwork and the authors' detailed stories of the area. Every Baltimorean should own a copy. Rita and her co-authors have done a superb job.

Baltimore's Little Italy Artist
This book is like a trip down "memory lane" for those of us who grew up in Baltimore. It is apparent that a great deal of thought went into the prepartion of this book. The full page prints are nicely presented on glossy paper. This is also an inspiring story of a man's generosity to his family and his community via his artwork.

Another pure dose for the "Big Book Of..." junkies.!!
From undoubtedly one of the best quality comic-book series ever comes the Big Book Of Vice:
fans of this incredible series know all too well that what's to be expected here is a very-in-depth look into the subject (vice) with the aid of some of the best contemporary comic-makers around.
Your illustrated journey includes:
-tobbaco. Its superbly interesting history plus the all (not) too well hazards it pertains to as well as all the marketing trickeries involved in its spread.

-prostitution. Again, its history as the "world's oldest profession" (you'll discover stuff beyond imagination on this one) plus the wide spectrum of vice and illegality it brings with it..
-gambling. Probably the most spectacular and eye-opening section of the book. Check out the stunningly imaginative scams of lotteries, pro-betters and pro-cheaters, card playing, and some of the most infamous bets ever made!
-and a "general" section on vice which even includes the "danger" posed by comics as seen by some of society's less liberal sectors.

As usual, drawn with tremendous gusto and funny as hell, this is a proud addition to the series. Even if your acquaintence with this series begins here be warned: odds are you will be hooked. And yes, i'd take a nice lil wager on that too.
Precious stuff.

Defininitely another Hit!
I've been hooked! This book is definitely one good read- page after page this is one of the most entertaining books i've read.

192 pages is just not enough- this volume is an informative and entertaining compendium of mankind's best (or worst- depending on the reader) pastimes.

This volume contains everything you want to know about sex, drugs, booze, and everything in between.

This book is definitely worth your $13.50

Fun For Addicts and Teetotallers Alike!
One more excellent entry from Paradox Press! Here, you learn about all the good/bad things of life. Learn the pros and cons of all vices. If you're hooked on Big Books, it's an obvious must-have!

A very informative book
This book is written in easily digestible chunks for the lay person, with the final chapter summarizing clearly the steps to take to rid oneself of the yeast syndrome. Useful recommendations are also given for women suffering PMS. However, while Michael Murray advises excluding dairy products (an entire food group), he does not offer any alternative sources for calcium apart from calcium tablets. Inspite of this, I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know about the symptoms and natural cure of chronic candidiasis.

Very Easy To Read & Understand
After months of doctor appointments, I was finally diagnosed with Candida. I knew nothing about candidiasis and so I started searching the web for information. I found so much varying information and most of it I didn't trust. When I found this book (...), I knew it was right. This book contains the most comprehensive, easy to understand information that I've found. The author is very thorough without going into overwhelming detail. I started following the diet and techniques almost immediately since the book gets right into problem solving. I can say my health has improved almost 100% in a very short time.

A well researched and written book
I am currently reading this book, and am a little more than 1/2 way through it. This author is on the cutting edge of this subject, and seems to know all there is to know about it. I hope he continues to research this subject, and also to inform the public about it. What I've read about candida in the past all comes together in this book. The author fills in the missing pieces of information in the books I've read before.
