Purchased both box sets for my 4 year old grandson for Christmas and he loved them. His response to his folks was I can't wait to learn how to read so I can read by myself. He and folks couldn't wait to see what happened next. He ran around in his underware and towel around his neck pretending to be Captain Underpants.

A big hit with a 7-year old!

On a road trip vacation, our car broke down. While waiting for a mechanic to fix it, we walked to a nearby book store. My almost-7-year-old son took one glance at book #4's title about Professor Poopypants, and he was hooked! A potentially dreary day in a strange city turned into one of the highlights of our trip, despite all that nasal discharge from laughing. We definitely plan to buy the rest of Pilkey's series. Sincerely, Lumpy Liverpants (based on Professor Poopypants' nefarious naming convention). Tra La Laaa!

Bishop
By: Miz

Richard Brown Jr. AKA "Bishop" the son of a prominent pastor and schoolteacher was raised to keep God first in his life and always do the right thing. However, sometime it doesn't happen that way, the Brown family is forced to move into the most ruthless projects in Brooklyn (Fort Greene) due to financial difficulties. That's when the entire problem started, when Richard met the love of his life Lisa, the hottest chick in the Fort Greene area. Unfortunately for both Lisa and Bishop, Shameek wasn't having it. Shameek was determined to destroy everything that stood in Bishop ways.

I heard so many positive things about this book, before even getting my hands on it. Everyone has his or her opinion, and I had to admit I was curious on what all the "HYPE" was about. I came to the conclusion that everyone was corrected about this book. Miz really out did himself with this book I give it a 9. Great job Miz.

Richard Brown Jr., known as Bishop on the streets, was raised in a loving home by Rev. Ricahrd Brown Sr. and Maria Brown, a schoolteacher. Forced to live in the projects, Richard was introduced to street life in his teenage years and got caught up in the game of drugs and murder. While his street life continues to spiral out of control, Richard struggles between the personalities of "Richard the churchboy" and "Bishop the gangster."

Bishop is a powerful story of how quickly the tough streets can take over and end lives.

Richard Timothy Brown Jr. is the son of a pastor and a teacher with a church upbringing. Richard is known as a quiet church boy. When his family is faced with financial difficulties, they are forced to move into Fort Greene projects in Brooklyn NY. Richard has no friends that until he meets Kendu who quickly becomes more then just his best friend he becomes the bro he never had. Kendu is the one who nicknames him "Bishop".

When Lisa the flyest female in fort green takes a liking to Bishop, he discovers a love like no other. Bishop and Lisa love one another unconditional; this is a problem for her ex boyfriend Shameek who does not take the break up to well.

Shameek is a thug, drug dealer and all around ruthless person. Now out of nowhere this church going kid has a beef going on. When Kendu is gun down by Shameek's soldier all hell breaks loose. Bishop struggles with his up bringing and the feeling of having to avenge his friend's death.

Take the roller coaster ride with Bishop. Read the story and find out who makes it out the hood and who does not. Find out does Bishop have what it takes to avenge his friend's death and protect his family or will he turn the other cheek. This story is action pack. Has love, backstabbing, loyalty, drugs, murder, robbery all the making for a great story that could easily be a movie. This book is unpredictable and a must read.

Author Miz does a great job bringing this story together, while putting the hood in pen form. I commend him on his introduction of the characters. He gives you background on each one of them to the point that you saying damn I understand now why they did x, w, z. I also commend him on his choice of the cover once you read the book the cover totally makes sense. Sometimes a cover does not jump out to me but I have to admit the cover hit it right on the nail. I look forward to reading more from this Author. I had this book for months and I am so glad I pulled it out my waiting to be read pile. I brought part 2 when I brought Bishop so now I am off to continue the story.

Richard Brown Jr. AKA "Bishop" the son of a prominent pastor and school teacher was raised to keep God first in his life and always do the right thing.

The Brown family finds themselves in financial turmoil when Mrs. Brown gets laid off and they are forced to move to Fort Greene projects in Brooklyn, New York. Labeled as the pastor son and being surrounded by the chaos in the PJ's, Richard didn't have any friends until he met Kendu, a good guy who accepts Richard for who he is and they become the best of friends.

Its love at first sight for Bishop when he is approached by Lisa, the flyest chick in Fort Greene. His life takes a 360 turn when Kendu life is taken away by a soldier that's apart of Shameeks' crew. Shameek is a drug dealer, thug and also the ex of Lisa, which he is not taking the break up lightly.

What will Bishop do? Will he take actions in his own hands and avenge Kendu's death and protect his family by any means necessary? Take a ride on the wild side with Bishop and crew to see who will be the last man standing.

MIZ and OH produced a very good read. Fast paced, very descriptive from the beginning to end. Each character was introduce very well. Looking forward to reading more from the author. GREAT JOB!!!!!

This book has sections on bedding, lampshades, curtains, and pillows. Each section has several ideas of great-looking projects that you can make at home. It never really occured to me that I could make my own lampshades in fabrics to match my room! The projects are all ingredibly simple, also... but the finished projects look stunning!

While the contents of this book are beautifully displayed and the instructions are relatively easy to follow, the book is a consolidation of the four individual Home Furnishing Workbooks -- pillows, bed linens, window treatments and lampshades. Unfortunately, that is not indicated in the information presented here. Therefore, if you own them, purchasing this book would be a waste of money.

This book is a good book for the beginner hawaiian quilter. The patterns are full sized and very simplistic. There is a nice variety of them with the addition of quilting suggestions once the applique portion is completed. My only negative comment would be the lack of color photos in the beginning of the book. The first 10 pages include detailed instructions on how to create your own hawaiian quilt block, complete with black and white photos to illustrate each step. These photos, because of the lack of color, are difficult to see clearly what is being explained. If this book were printed using color, it would be an excellent tool for the beginner. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a place to start hawaiian quilting.

I am fairly new to Hawaiian quilting; I am nearly finished with my fourth block and I think that the designs in this book are great. The directions in this book have you cut the design from the fabric and then baste it to the background. To anyone starting I would probably suggest trying the freezer paper method instead because I would be afraid of any raveling of the fabric. Other than that the designs are creative and imaginative. I cannot wait to try the designs in Poakalani's other two volumes.

I own both this book and its sister (Volume I), and have the honor of attending quilting classes taught by John and his daughter Cissy.

The designs in this book are elegant, and, unlike many designns by other artists, capture both the beauty and spirit of the flowers and plants they represent.

The instructions at the beginning of the book are very helpful. My only complaint is that the overall print quality is rather low, so that it is hard to see the stich detail in some of the b&w photographs.

This book has really creative ideas to use for pillows and any other things made with material that have corners and edges. The explanations are not in depth so some knowledge of sewing will help. I love that the book is spiral bound so it lays flat and is easy to use. Pictures are great and close up making it easy to see what Linda Lee is explaining.

Okay, I'm a novice sewer. I have lots of novice/fun books from Amy Butler and others on how to make cute projects such as fabric baskets, pajamas and pillows. Enter my frustration. Most "beginner" books will tell you to finish a seam by "basting" or "cut into the allowance". It all seems like a foriegn language. If that be the case, Linda's book here is the translation for how to actually finish your project by making those edges and corners look professional. Between this book and Sewing 101 (which I also highly recommend), I was able to accomplish a task my husband considered impossible. I am looking at a set of beautiful designer-fabric pillows, made by me (yes me, a young 30 something)!! Can't wait to move on to some of those cute projects in other eh-hem books. Thanks, Linda for writing a clearly illustrated text with instructions in clear language!

Unless you have a good working experience of pattern-making, this book probably isn't where you want to begin. The author has assumed a level of expertise that is beyond a very beginner. The ideas are inspiring and it does have some fun ideas, especially in re-building the shape of furniture. But if you need to start from Square-1 then keep looking for a book that will teach you more of the basics. If, however, you are an accomplished seamstress, it won't be difficult for you to have a lot of fun with this book. You can fill in the blanks with some upholstery Q&A websites on-line.

Some people get books like this because they want to see how things are done but rarely do they actually do a project. I on the otherhand am a doer and not just a looker. This book makes doing it easier.

Just over 140 pages long this is a book that really gave me the step by step info on how to both make slipcovers which are a European maindstay as well as how to redo upholdtery of chairs and sofas.

The authors covers everything from what type of fabric to use to preparing it ahead of time re: washing and sizing. On pages 56-66 she gives a step by step with photos instructions on how to do a slipcover for a couch that is of sound construction.

Pages 67 thru 71 a club chair is redone. But it is the tailored slipcovers starting on page 73 which I can do and do well. The Quick Tied cover for a chair on 87 is just perfect for those of us who live the casual California lifestyle or for someone in a small cottage on Marthas Vineyard.

The book covers Materials; Tools and Equipment; Cushions and Pillows; Simple Coverups; Making a Tailored Slipcover; Tailored Slipcover Projects; Quick Upholstery; Reuposletring a Chair; Upoholstery Projects. The issues of padding and stuffing, webbing, tying spring cord, threads, zippers, tacks, welt, sewing and sizing are all covered.

See if your library has the book. Then take your time, and plan well and measure twice and cut once and pin and baste and you will discover that you not only can redo your own furniture but have fun and probably save money as well.

A book about cushions with no pillows...

Review Date: 2004-11-29
I read this book at a local bookstore, cover to cover. Thre are some lovely cushion cover treatments, my favorite being a bolster done in cables.

However, this book is seriously flawed in 2 ways. There are way too many designs which require swiss darning (embroidery)in order to achieve their look. The worst flaw in the book is that no where, anywhere does it mention the type of pillow forms you need for each cushion. They aren't mentioned in the material lists anywhere. Many of the cushion covers are non-standard and I defy you to find a matching pillow form anywhere. Had this information been included along with a "where to buy" section, I'd have bought the book.

4/28/08....over 3 years later, I stand by my review. I do not believe I put anything in this review which is false. I feel the book helps people create half of the project and leaves them to their own devices to achieve the finished look. As a knitter of 40 years, I absolutely hate being abandoned half way through a project!

I had the opportunity to take a workshop with Debbie a couple of weeks ago and she's great! A lot of the techniques in this book look difficult but are extremely effective visually and easy to acheive. She includes a lot of beading and buttons in her work. There are some funky techniques like bleaching lines into a striped piece to make a plaid pattern and a loopy mohair pillow with a bead on each loop that is just amazing! The detailed picture descriptions are some of the best I've seen and the spiral binding makes it easy to keep the book open to your pattern. I would use a lot of these techniques in future projects for my own home or even for borders on scarves etc.

A lovely book

I hate to see a wonderful book like this lambasted by a reviewer with incorrect information. I went to Michaels and found a pillow form that exactly matched the size of the cover I wanted to make. There are nine pillows in the book that are that standard size. They also carried two or three of the other sizes. Then I looked online and I found all but four of the sizes in the book. The other odd sizes may be available there with more searching, but since I don't want one right now, I didn't spend any more time. But I did find a site where they make custom inserts to the size you want. And finally, you could easily make your own insert by sewing a form and stuffing it.

The pillows are beautiful and the directions are clear and complete. I recommend this book highly to knitters who want to make something for their homes. The yarn is available online or you can go to your local yarn store and, using the information in the back of the book, find comparable yarn.

The book is from the UK which may account for some differences, but those can be overcome with a little effort.

My Life as a Walrus Whoopee Cushion
By: Bill Myers

The comedy/novel, My Life as a Walrus Whoopee Cushion, is about a klutzy kid named Wally who messes up everything. Wally and his two friends, Opera and Wall Street, buy a Lotto ticket that is worth 2.1 gazillion dollars. Through a series of misfortunes, they learn their lesson.
One of my favorite Characters in this book is Opera. He is very dumb, and will do anything for potato chips and classical music; henceforth, the name, Opera. This book teaches that greed can ruin lives. What I like best about the book is how the writer grabs you with things you can relate to. The ending of this book is satisfying and realistic.
Bill Myers' style of writing keeps you engrossed in the book. There are so many funny jokes and things about life you can relate to, you can't put the book down. Bill gives the exact right amount of details, and the vocabulary is intermediate. This book would appeal to 8-13 year-olds because it is easy and fun. I recommend this book for it's hilarious content, and great theme.
I give this book four stars.
