Highly recommended
Every day you hear of new problems from poor sleep and since 9/11, things seem worse. I was skeptical at first, but Dr. Krakow's simple methods really seem to help me. I like that this book can be read two ways. You can read it for the detail, or just concentrate on the practical steps he outlines at the beginning of each section. This book should be helpful to anyone who knows or thinks she has a sleep problem, difficulties with sleepness, and etc. The author clearly knows what he's talking about!

A must for those who can't sleep
This very useful book describes the many things one can do to overcome insomnia, a condition that makes nighttime miserable for so many people. Written by a noted sleep researcher, it outlines the basic principles of sleep hygiene, presenting practical ways readers can make the changes in behavior and attitude that will alleviate their sleeplessness. The equivalent to having several sessions with a sleep specialist, it should be required reading for anyone who often spends a good portion of the night in fruitless pursuit of the sandman.

The lost resort : the story of Crystal Springs, its hotels and water cures, Yates County, New York

I am the author's daughter....
Description from back cover: "In the fall of 1939, a young hunter and his two companions were roaming the overgrown fields about five miles southwest of Dundee, between Seneca Lake and Keuka Lake in Yates County, New York, when one of them stumbled upon a mystery that led him a merrier chase than any rabbit ever could. Entering a semi-circular clearing with the intention of looking for rabbits in a nearby wooded area along Big Stream, the hunter suddenly noticed a peculiar odor. Literally following his nose for about twenty feet to the bank of the creek, he saw a rusty pipe thrusting above mats of tangled weeds in an otherwise isolated area. Since the pipe was emitting a stream of sparkling water, the hunter called his friends so they could all refresh themselves. Using their hands as cups, they tried to drink the water, spit it out, and wondered if they had been poisoned. Far from slaking the young man's thirst, the water only whet his curiosity. Why did it tast and smell so strange? And why was it flowing from a rusty pipe in the middle of nowhere? The curious young hunter was Merlyn ("Bud") Wheeler, Jr., who had lived most of his life near Dundee. Between that fall of 1939 and 1943, Bud pursued the older residents of the area until he found at least six who were able to help solve the mystery. The help came primarily in the form of old-fashioned glass plate negatives and stereoscopic photos that provided visual evidence of a resort and sanitarium that had developed around a mineral spring accidentally discovered in 1864. Because Bud was working as a commercial photographer, he had the expertise to reproduce from the old glass negatives and stereoscopic photos an extensive pictorial history of a once popular, but lost resort--Crystal Springs. After 1942, the demands of marriage, World War II, and supporting a family kept Bud too busy to pursue his interest in what turned out to be a whole village that had completely disappeared except for a rusty pipe. But his interest did continue, and he carefully accumulated any information that came his way. In 1977, Bud turned over his substantial collection of Crystal Springs photos and other material to the Dundee Area Historical Society. The Society's director, Shirley Knox VanDyne, joined the search for more details and verification of an era in the vicinity's history that was little known to current residents. Since it is unlikely that any individuals with firsthand knowledge of Crystal Springs still live, it is fairly certain that, had Bud Wheeler and Shirley VanDyne not collected these materials when they did, much of the history of Crystal Springs would have been lost forever. The three authors have shared a desire to preserve the photographic and material evidence that Crystal Springs did once exist. Their aim in this book has been to document as fully and accurately as possible a colorful cross-section of Yates County history that will be useful to historians and of interest to present and future residents of Yates County and neighboring counties. The authors hope that you, the reader, will soon find yourself transported over the portals of Chapter 1 into an exciting time in the history of Yates County, New York."

So I'm not nuts after all.
I guess it's not so crazy to think sex might be helpful in therapy after all. The profession is just to frightened to even consider the possibility. Love, in all forms, is therapeutic. Whether we choose to believe it or not. Being "cured" in therapy is driven by love. Draw your own conclusions. At least Haule has the guts to open the topic up for discussion and not just dismiss it out of fear or ignorance.

Bravely shouts the dark secret of successful therapy: LOVE!
Falling in love again, hopelessly? You're the patient and it's your therapist? Don't curse your fate, fool! Be glad! It means there's a cure on the way. You're the therapist and it's the patient? Dare to be proud and stay with it. Love has been the secret ingredient of successful therapies from the earliest days of psychoanalysis, but it's too dangerous a topic to talk about in this suspicious age. This author risks thinking the unthinkable, saying the unsayable. For professionals and interested laymen

The best "common sense" book on management I've seen.
This handbook was my best friend during some very difficult management years. I would often refer to it when dealing with some sticky problem, and I was always impressed with the "common sense" approach. The brief scenarios and the page or two devoted to the problem was all I ever had time for. I give it to all of my colleagues who are becoming managers for the first time.

EXCELLENT reference tool for those in management!
Having been in management for more than 10 years, I found this book highly informative and wise in its counsel. Each of the seventeen chapters focuses on one area of troubleshooting. Within each troubleshooting area, there are up to nine scenarios in which one may choose which best fits one's problem situation. And, then, after each scenario, possible causes and cures along with "something to think about" are provided. In addition to all of this information -- and this is a real plus -- each scenario is labled a "shark" or an "elephant" or a "wolf"! This enables you, the manager, to prioritize your problems and when to troubleshoot them. For example, if a problem is labled a "shark," it requires your total attention right now (p. viii)! As evidenced by my comments, I strongly recommend this book for every manager's reference shelf

A book for then and for now
Mark Twain and Medicine is an absolutely wonderful book. Not only is the story it tells entertaining, but the insight into the history of medicine and its relationship to our own health care system is informative and thought provoking. I found myself anticipating each chapter, wondering what the next new medical trend would be. I was alternately amused and amazed by this evolution. Do yourself a real favor and read this book. Then, do your physician a favor, and give her or him a copy. You will find yourself discussing and using what you learn as long as you deal with doctors.

Twain's articulate (and sometimes scathing) commentaries
Mark Twain And Medicine: "Any Mummery Will Cure" by K. Patrick Ober (Professor of Internal Medicine and Associate Dean for Education, Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, North Carolina) is an informative and scholarly survey and analysis of the famous and opinionated American author Mark Twain's views of and experiences with the medical profession. Twain's experiments with alternative care systems available in his era (partly due to his frustration with the shortcomings of traditional medicine), and Twain's articulate (and sometimes scathing) commentaries offer a unique perspective on the American medical industry of his day -- and still comes alive for contemporary readers who are keeping in mind how the author's life experience impacted his great works of literature. Highly recommended for in-depth American literature studies shelves, and particularly for those devoted to Twain's immortal literary classics, Mark Twain And Medicine is a welcome addition to academic and community library collections.

A straight forward and useful marketing resource
As a business consultant, one of the most important things I can do for my clients is to help them overcome their "time honored traditions". While you might think that the need to call in outside consultants is indicative of management's recognition that the current way of doing things isn't working any more, quite often the opposite is true. Organizational inertia, especially in the area of marketing, is often difficult to overcome. This book has helped me countless times in assisting organizations in overcoming "old thinking" and in moving their marketing strategies forward. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me - adamleft@webspan.net.

One of the best books written about marketing. A gem!
Not only is it easy to read, but it's shocking in its ability to zero in on what's wrong with the marketing business. A must read! For those who want more detail, try reading their first collaborative effort, The Marketing Revolution. Bottom line--if you buy no other marketing book, buy one of these two books. They are Marketing Bibles with enormous power. Why? Because they lay out in excrutiating detail how marketeers have been relying on well-worn mths to conduct business--myths that have no basis in fact. Thus, is it any wonder that so many marketing efforts either don't work or when they do work can't be explained. I should know. Prior to reading these books, I fell for the same myths. Not any more, thanks to authors Clancy and Shulman. Gene Pinder Director of Marketing U.S. SPACE CAMP

Mental Ills and Bodily Cures: Psychiatric Treatment in the First Half of the Twentieth Century (Medicine and Society, Vol 8)

A Sympathetic History of Draconian Treatment Methods
This book investigates the history of somatic therapies which were generally applied in mental hospitals during the first half of the twentieth century, among them electroshock therapy, lobotomy, metrazol shock therapy, malaria fever therapy, and forced sterilization. Such treatments are most often dismissed straight away as cruel and barbaric (which is, of course, not entirely incorrect). The strength of this study is that it investigates how, on a local level, these therapies were administered (in two small, public California hospitals). For example, it appears that doctors liked their patients suffering from paresis more after they learned it was caused by a specific bacterium (before it had been associated with sexual excess). At times, patients volunteered for draconian treatments because they believed that these had benefitted their fellow patients. This book brings a more human perspective on early practices in mental hospitals and makes their application understandable.

astounding look at a dark page of medical history
well written and comprehensively researched insightful analysis and meaningful commentary scary applications for our present mind set this is an important book readable, thoughtful, entertaing at times, and all around brilliant
